    Back in the day, Hogan said, “the secret is in the dirt.” Today, ECog, shares the secret on YT. The secret shared in this video has finally cured my slice. I now enjoy hitting driver. I even hit a 280 yard strait drive this last week. My overall swing has improved by watching your videos. Thank you!

      Love to hear that!!! Secret will always be in the dirt (the work and experimentation) but with modern technology I'm sure Mr.Hogan would have took full advantage and worded that a bit different :)

    This is the best description of every movement for the start of the downswing. I've fought the the shaft steepening for 57 years and this is the best description of how to shallow and square. It's great that you said who this is not applicable for.

    I had been struggling with my swing for months and my confidence had reached an all time low. I knew I had to square the clubface and swing from the inside more (based on a lesson I had received) but easier said than done. I watched this video the night before my round today (a potentially dangerous thing to do!) and suddenly things clicked in terms of squaring the club face and my ball striking. It felt great!! Thank you so much for all the help and advice you provide. I am enjoying golf again 😃

    It works! After shoulder surgery a few years ago, I began to lay the club off when taking it back. This caused an over the top move coming down. I would then wrestle the club back into the slot to prevent pushes and weak fades. By the time I hit the ball, all of the energy of the swing was lost, and my distance suffered. With the move taught in this video, I am once again carrying my 7 iron 165 to 170 yards with a 20 degree launch angle and a sweet little draw. I am 69 years old with a handicap index of 6.2.

    How any golfer could watch this video and not improve is basically impossible. I would add and emphasize Eric's comment that if you want to incorporate these movements if you're coming from being a slicer - listen to Eric and do these movements initially VERY SLOWLY, over & over & over while hitting golf balls - you cannot exagerate this movement enough at the beginning. Once you get the 'feel' of the club from steep to shallow WITH THE HANDS TWISTING THE CLUB 'closed', it will be the greatest moment in your golfing life. Another Great video Eric.

    Great explanation! Let's see if I can make this work on the range.
    If my natural shape is already a draw, what are the other benefits of working on shallowing the downswing?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks!
      Well that depends really on several factors.
      It depends on HOW you draw?
      Do you draw with a steep shaft early, but then shallow late? This would include likely early extension, contact issues and issues with pushes/over draws.
      shallow early allows you to have good body motions through the ball. Enables you to turn and tilt appropriately to tighten the dispersion, limit your misses.

My question is: When I incorporate the wrist flexion part of this move into my driver is it appropriate to feel like I REALLY need to curl my wrist to square the face. As in much more than my irons. Hey Eric.. So, after I manipulate the wrists as you prescribe on the back swing, at impact I have to manipulate the wrists back more towards the way they were at setup position? I guess what I'm asking is, squaring the club face isn't automatic when shallowing the back swing, it has to be consciously done at impact? Thanks.. Great videos..

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Carlson!
      As with all things golf and life.
      If you currently do a move WITHOUT THOUGHT and you accomplish what you are looking to accomplish then NO it does not require any "manipulation".
      BUT
      IF you current do a move WITHOUT THOUGHT and you DO NOT accomplish what you are looking to accomplish then OF COURSE you need to consciously "manipulate" SOMETHING or else how do you change the result?
      Nothing is automatic.....unless it is.

    I like to think of shallowing as a byproduct of a good transition, then being right hand dominant square the face by facing the right palm back then down. Right palm up towards the sky just doesn't feel right, but maybe I do it for a tiny fraction of a second before feeling right palm back. Also, when Malaska told you he felt like the shaft was tipping on the downswing you nodded, but now its never tip the shaft. Maybe need a vid on reconciling the Malaska/Cogorno schools of thought!

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lol thanks for the feedback!
      Mike and I are on the same page....we both said clearly in the video we did together that you need to give the player what THEY need.
      IF someone is too steep (80-90% of people) they need to shallow it.....by whatever means necessary.
      Thats the reality of what works in person....I have done this many many many times over the years. It works...whether its correct on paper or not matters less to me than if it works.
      All the best

      I've been following a lot of different teachers for the last several months. People love Malaska, and no disrespect to him, but personally I'm not a fan. He tends to talk in absolutes without clarifying who his comments are meant for. Contrast that with Eric (and others) who importantly say over and over things like, "IF you are steep, you need to feel this, but if you're hitting hooks and you're too shallow, you need to feel the opposite" or whatever. Just my two cents.

    Obscure question about shaft pitch/orientation in three dimensions: A lot of people reference having the butt end of the club pointing at our outside the ball line at left arm parallel to ground in the downswing (from the down-the-line vantage point). If you were looking at a swing from face-on, where should the butt end point at that same left arm parallel position? I.e. should the shaft be perpendicular to the ball-target line, point at the ball, etc. I notice that when I look at my swing from face-on, my lead forearm and shaft form about a 45 degree angle (maybe sharper), meaning that the butt end of the club points away from the target. Though I don't think I'm achieving it through any kind of lead wrist extension, I suspect that the acute angle formed between my lead arm and the shaft (from face-on) at the left arm parallel position may correlate to a steep-looking (or steep in reality) shaft pitch from the down-the-line perspective. Curious how you would think about the interplay between the two. Does that make sense?

      the very simple answer is this:
      Pause this at left arm parallel

      What do you see?

    • @Regulator1332
      @Regulator1332 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CogornoGolf definitely a less acute angle than I form between my lead arm and the clubshaft (butt end pointed less away from the target along the ball-target line). Seems to defy conventional golf instruction, but have you had players feel more of a “cast” from the top to help shallow the club onto a better plane?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes IF they overdo the radial deviation (hinge) in transition. The risk there (even if its "on plane") would be a very narrow low point. Too down of an angle of attack which will need to be fixed late to avoid huge divots.

    Great tip. Can't you hit hooks and still be too steep (early extending with high hands at impact) and even over the top (pull hook)?

    I've been 'locking' my left elbow in my abs on the takeaway to get the steepness. Very crowded feel. I hope this gives me more room going back.

    hi eric, the last month I've been working on shallowing my swing and fixing my early extension from hips, my swing is a lot better now.
    with the irons I hit pretty straight with a slight fade . but with the driver I have a big slice. could this be my problem leaving the fact open? I tried at the range my last few balls doing the knuckles down and the ball seem to be straighter. when a wasn't shallowing my swing in years past I never had the knuckles motion and my ball was pretty straight but did a a slice miss. so does shallowing the shaft require the knuckles down motion to get a straight ball flight in most cases??

      1. Could be! Would need to see your swing on video to say for sure.
      2. Yes-or grip strong enough so toe doesn't get behind heel

    Would you agree, that if you were wearing a watch on your right wrist, as your hands come down onto the path of the target line (level with the stomach), the face of the watch is perpendicular to the ground? It is not facing up or down but opposite to the target.

    I don't hit hooks my normal shot is a little 5yd draw my miss is a push cut. Should I be doing this? Or just work on squaring the club face?

    How do you know when you are square just practice reps?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ball flight really
      Straight=square
      Curve right= open
      Curve left=closed
      In terms of looking on video getting the toe right on top of or slightly in front of heel would be "square"

    Eric. Instead of shallowing the shaft during the downswing can you instead start the backswing with the left hand turned down and take it back shallow and swing back on same plane?

    I’ve never understood when people say the shallowing is ‘natural’. I think it actually takes strength to shallow. For me, I’m actively curling my knuckles and turning the left wrist to the sky to try and force that club head down behind me. It’s an effort. Left to they’re own devices at all and my hands tug down and pitch the shaft steep. That club head does not want to pitch down at all unless I make it. If the club head weighed a ton things would be different. But clubs are light and it seems way easier to me to just pull on the handle just the tiniest bit at the top, and boom, steep club. Good transitions seem far more like fighting against what’s ‘natural’ than not. I have to make it seem like the club head wants to win the gravity battle when it really doesn’t. I think of watching Koepka in transition. That guy is bullying the hell out of that club head to force it down and not pitch up. He has almost no arm depth at the top so he really has to do that out of necessity more than most. Nothing passive about that move and you’ve got be strong as fk to get the club coming from behind you if your start point is where he puts it.

      Some people I have worked with shallow the shaft beautifully with no conscious thought (thats probably less than 10% of golfers)
      Many when they make a swing with no thought DO NOT shallow (AS YOU MENTION)
      So for 90% they need to CONSCIOUSLY change SOMETHING to MAKE it shallow....agreed

      Hey Chris!
      IF you already come too far inside then yes you would need to feel or do something to get it more from out to in to find neutral.
      The key is the HOW....which depends on WHY you are too inside
      There are 3 good ones

      Hey Rick!
      Nope-go ahead and watch the video Mike and I did explaining both ends of the spectrum and where we like for check points.
      In this video you will notice I mention these are FEELs to fix the steep shaft.
      Of course if you are too steep you need to feel SHALLOw pieces (you always FEEL the opposite to find middle)
