  • We replace a $6 motor coupler in the power steering module under the dash of my brothers daily driver 2014 Kia Optima. It was making a loud knock / noise when steering. This job can be done in 1-2 hours with only basic hand tools. The similar generation Hyundai Sonata will be the same procedure and other models are likely close in how they are to be serviced for the same issue. Hopefully this video helps.

yikes a plastic steering coupler haha, might as well be a rag joint! Likely going to be issue in the next few years on these cars.

Yeah, our theory is that they had the idea to go with a softer rubber than necessary to dampen to feel on the higher trim models. That coupler could be nylon/uhmw and last the lifetime of the vehicle like it does in other manufacturers. Overall, I like the simplicity of the design compared to the pump, lines, and hydraulic rack. Now that we've swapped on, I'm curious if there is a harder coupler material option in the aftermarket.

@@gearheadsyndrome might be, it’s a common swap in older ford engines to change the nylon cam gear to bronze or steel, I’m betting there is something like that for this situation too

Exactly!, For longevity you would want a material as hard as possible so long as the motor/rack interface is slightly harder. Still want the hub to be the sacrificial part.
