As a 26 year old female who has never done anything to my car, with your video and a couple other ones I was able to fix mine on my 2013 Kia Soul! I will say I had to have help to loosed the long screw in the back, but everything else I did myself and I can say I’ve never been more proud 🤣

Thanks for this video! My mom has a 2013 Kia Soul and the 10 year warranty on this part expired probably a few months ago. Unfortunately I just diagnosed this issue a week ago so I had to fix it myself or pay someone to do it for me. I watched a couple others as well and yours was the most complete. I ended up making a step by step checklist and my brother and I did the repair today in around an hour and 20 minutes. 10 of that was just trying to get the column seated on the bracket and the 14 mm bolt in.
For those of you who are trying this yourselves, the column has to go up and into the bracket toward the front of the car. Get a good look at how it’s oriented before you take the 14 mm bolt out and how the lip on the column is situated so you can quickly put it back in. That was really the most frustrating part of doing this. It’s seriously worth buying the coupling from Amazon for $6 and just doing it yourself. As long as you have a 10 mm, 12 mm, and 14 mm socket, a Phillips head screw driver, and T30 torx bit, you can do this. Save a couple hundred bucks.

Do you really need to take down the column? why not lay down on the seat instead of the floor, so we can have more space? I heard a lot about it, and many people say you don't need to disconnect wires. Now that you know how is down there, any way to do it without taking the column down or disconnecting anything? What about if I remove the seat completely and work everything down there without removing the column, just the cover under it? Mine is a Kia soul 2012 automatic.

    • @jewbybrother579
      @jewbybrother579 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@irisbaez1972 the power steering motor is twisted up in a direction that makes it essentially inaccessible. Without dropping the column. It would honestly take you longer to fully remove the seat and put it back than to just follow the directions in this video. It’s very easy.

A truly awesome video. Frankly those folks like us who drive a 2013 Soul aren’t sitting on a lot of money. Unfortunately I was past the extended warranty date and the local dealer wanted $185 to diagnose the problem. I’m sure they would have charged another $300-$400 to repair. I’m not a car guy but your video was so well done that it convinced me that I could do it. Thanks so very much!!

Great vid! I appreciate it. Just did mine to completion, and boy was that bolt hard to get back in. At first I didn't put the steering wheel back in at the top before putting the big bolt back in at the bottom. Yea it is a huge headache and impossible if you don't do the top first and tighten the bolts. I couldn't have the vid playing while doing the job because of where I am and no service. So when I finally gave up and went back to the house to recap the vid, let's just say I was pissed on wasting a whole hour but happy to see how you did it, it was a relief to say the least

Pro Tip: disconnect the battery before disconnecting any electrical connectors (ESPECIALLY the AIRBAG.), but after you remove the 2 screws in the bottom steering wheel cowling.
Also, I had the issue that my car wouldn't start after putting it all back together. Turns out I just needed to push the gas pedal down while trying to start it. Started right up and all the warning lights turned off.
Also, Make sure to properly align the steering wheel if you end up pulling it apart... I put it all together for the 2nd time and found that the steering wheel was 45 degrees off while driving straight down the road. Test everything out before putting all the cowling and covers back on.

Great video! This was by far away the best of them of TH-cam. Getting the column reseated in that bracket was the worst! After a couple of hours I had to give up on it until the next day. After a good night's sleep, it took me about 10 minutes. The one problem is that during the "difficult time", the column came apart in two pieces. I must not have gotten the gears notched up just right because the steering wheel is every so slightly askew. I'm not going to worry about, the clunk is gone!

Sooo I have a 2013 Kia Soul right? Found this video online and read comments saying “I fixed this in just over an hour” and “I’m a young woman whose never done anything mechanical before and this was SO easy”… so I took a shot at it.
LET 👏🏻 ME👏🏻 TELL👏🏻YOU, THIS WAS NOT EASY AND DID NOT TAKE AN HOUR. That freaking bolt that is above your brake pedal is the most painful crap I’ve ever dealt with and I do not recommend you do this alone.
BUT, after giving up 3 times, the help of three other people, 1 bruised tailbone and a cracked rib later (this is not a metaphor 😳) I’m happy to report I managed to fix my car with a replacement I bought for $5.99 on Amazon. Definitely do this if you don’t want to spend $500 at a dealership to get this tiny part fixed. All the pain was worth it if you are broke like me :) but it isn’t easy if you haven’t ever done car stuff before. At least I can say I did it my self and the difference it made was REMARKABLE. my car is like new now (well, 10 years new 😂)

Awesome video. I'll be replacing this coupler in a couple weeks on a 2012 Kia Soul.
In regards to the 14mm bolt, will a 3/8" extended reach Milwaukee m12 electric ratchet be able to access this bolt? I'd like to just hit the lever on my eRatchet and let it do all the work rather than me having to manually break it loose and finger spinning the bolt out by-hand (I'm lazy like that).
Also, will a Milwaukee m12 stubby impact wrench be able to access the two 12mm bolts with deep socket and minimal socket extension?
I notice a lot of details in the videos I watch (even noticed the odd sound at 16:25 . One thing I'm curious about is the steering angle position.
With the column unbolted, you rotated it counterclockwise. The front wheels are on the ground, they are not going to turn to the right, rather the steering column will (relatively speaking) "turn to the left (if that makes sense)". Then.......
You pulled the electric motor off the column, and with motor removed, you moved the steering wheel a bit. You recentered the steering wheel before you bolted the electric motor back on........did you get it right where it needed to be or did you have to reset the steering angle sensor?
I also plan on removing the front seat to make things easier. I've worked on vehicles long enough and hate having to become a temporary contortionist just to accomplish tasks under the dash. I've got plenty of power tools and can have the seat removed in a minute or two.
Oh and yes, any yellow electrical connector on a vehicle is associated with the air bag system.
Any length of yellow wire harness means that the length of harness contains wires inside it which can deploy any airbags and seat belt pretensioner cartridges if 12 volts are applied to one or more of the particular wires within the harness.

    • @megatonesilva6546
      @megatonesilva6546 ปีที่แล้ว

Well, I ended up doing this repair yesterday. It was super simple. I spent 1 minute to remove the front seat.....the rest was cake.
      Tools I used was:
Electric ratchet with 14mm short socket and T30 screw driver socket bit.
      .
Electric impact gun with 10mm short socket and 12mm long socket..
Electric impact driver with philips screw driver bit..
My extended reach electric ratchet got that back bolt removed in less than 10 seconds. I can see how that back bolt could be difficult to remove with a manual ratchet or any type of wrench
Great video. I completed this task in less than 30 minutes.

I have a 2010 Soul Sport with 127k on the clock. Vehicle developed a steering twitch after a curveside collision (R front wheel). The impact was strong enough to bend the (R) tie rod end and front strut. Replaced both tie rod ends and both struts. Had new tires installed and a 4 wheel alignment.
Soon after, the steering twitches occurred whenever going over certain bumps, road gaps or ruts. I returned to the same tire center and explained what was happening. The same 2 technicians double checked the alignment (20-25 minutes) as well as checking the wheel bearings for wear. They couldn't find anything under the car that could cause the steering twitch, so I went ahead to check the steering coupler!
Well, after dropping the steering column and having a clear view of the steering shaft assembly. I was unable to locate nor could see what even resembles that steering assist module! There was nothing but the steering shaft, a U joint connected to another shaft leading to the fire wall.
After several minutes trying to locate where that rubber coupler could go, I simply reassembled the steering column/lower dash.
Any ideas or thoughts why my 2010 Sport would not have that steering assist module under the dash?
    Thanks in advance!

Hmm odd… I would just go through and unplug it all and plug it al back in .. also if you dropped the Steering column without un-hooking the plugs and pulling all the clips that hold the wires to the dash bracing before, you could have turn some wires apart and wont see it being the Wire insulation is intact but the wire inside of it may have torn and came apart..
That’s why I was saying make sure you pull all the wires loose from all the plugs first before lowering the steering column because the wires under their tear easily..
OR some of the pins inside the plugs may have came loose and came out of their plug clip seat which would make it have connection issues.

I have a 2015 with the exact same issue, it seems like the first couple of gens will eventually develop it. Thank you for the video, I'm about to do it myself, you made it look super simple. I'm concerned about the airbag, but I'll just disconnect the battery before messing with that, and be real careful like you said.
