1. Crank over the engine without starting until the oil light goes out. 2. I found threading the coolant line up the side of the block and getting the banjo bolts started really difficult so I cut out about two inches of the pipe and replaced it with heavy duty fuel line. Made life very much easier!
Hi there ! I have the same turbo for 3000km without any issues. So far so good I am happy with that parts. I replaced the wastegate and removed the silicone hose to connect the APC.
Just a tip that is a normal amount of play. Turbos are supposed to have a small amount of shaft play. Basically if it doesnt band on the housing youre good
I am replacing that EXACT same model of Chinese turbo. I just got it out of the car. The compressor vanes are all chewed up like it sucked in a screw or some other foreign object. It was like that when I bought the car. I hope for your sake that it was indeed a foreign object that did the damage and not metal fatigue. I'm replacing it with a genuine Garrett - made in Italy. I may well replace that with a TD04 turbo later down the road and replace the ECU to control it properly - which is what you need to do to get the benefit of the higher boost. The existing ECU limits boost quite a bit more: 180 Hp vs. 250 Hp.
Yup! Even without oil in it, there shouldn't be any shaft play. And it clearly did not spin freely. I would rebuild that center section before putting that on any car.
Looking forward to the installation. Have you ever seen Saab's fitted with a blow off valve to make the audible noise? Every Saab where I live is pretty much stock, but there not as common here in the states except for certain areas.
The installation is uploaded and scheduled. Regarding the dump valve, its not possible with Saabs or GM vehicles using this engine because it meters every little bit of air, fed into the engine or not, so if you fit the valve, you may get that cool sound, but also an engine error light! :)
There's a way around it. Move the MAF so that it's after the blowoff valve before the throttlebody. That way when the blowoff valve discharges the air, the maf 'sees' the change in air flow.
The Backoffice I ran a GM MAF on my Mitsubishi Eclipse in a blowthru setup so that I could vent my blowoff valve and eliminate the hassle of plumbing the blowoff valve discharge back into the intake before the turbo. It worked fine, but keep in mind my car was OBD1. The basic idea of it should work, but I'm not sure what else may need to be changed for your application.
+Loren Husky I know Saab engines can be a bit fussy. At the end of the day I would wonder why bother on a 220+bhp car thats not designed for it and didn't need it. Better to spend the money getting it chipped and working on that bigger intercooler 😂
The video is scheduled soon, I have put around 600 hard miles on the new turbo and its running wonderfully! I am really impressed. I will put the data logger onto it later and see if there are any codes, but at the moment nothing reported. I feel it has gone closed loop as the fuel economy is back to normal. All in all, a good day spent. Including all the bits and bobs it probably cost around £200 to fix.
+Jose Gonzalez i think i have put 10k miles on it. I did some videos of the actual swap out, have you found those? It was a pretty quick job. Also replace any vac lines with silicone ones, i have a video about that too somewhere 😂
+Charles Choi It's fiddly but not particularly difficult as long as you are persistent and take care. I'd say maybe a 5. 10 being rebuilding a gearbox.

They max out around 250hp but the exhaust side is a little small for that. They are really small turbos.
Oh my goodness. You sir are a very brave man. I honestly don't think I'd have the nerve to use a chinese manufactured turbo on a car intended for road use. I'm assuming you couldn't find a replacement in a junk yard. Love Saabs though.

I don't go in for the nonsense that people spout. It's ridiculous to say imported stuff is crap from literally the same factories that produce the branded goods. Anyways it's pretty much moot, Chinese auto manufacturers are about to decimate Western brands in the same way Japanese brands did in the 80s.
@@backofficeshow there's good Chinese and there is bad it all depends on how much your willing to pay .the more you give the better quality build you get. Your choice is not wrong it's just your choice I can respect that !
That's where I disagree. Price isn't the determining factor by the time the product gets into the market, especially from products shipped directly from China. Local distributors adding 80% to the price for very little value is a problem. The difference in cost is not going into the few pence worth difference in materials.
Ah, it may well be so, but those little turbos gives my Saab Aero 270 hp, enough to leave my friend's Audi 4.2 V8 behind. I've had Chevs, a 1956 and a 1963 Bel Air, and seriously, even though they were beautiful, give me a Saab anyday. I've had Holdens with big V8s and my Saabs all pass them easy peasy on the highway. Gotta love a long legged Swede.

+94eh3 Thanks for the tip! The turbo is still running well, must be nearly 10k miles on it and I drive it hard. Glad I tried it .😀

I'll check but I expect there are at least 20k miles on the replacement turbo and no I'll effects so far.
Once I got it out where I could see it well, it was pretty obvious that it was damaged by a foreign object.
I wonder what it could have been, bit of the old turbo stuck in the intercooler?
"No play" you can hear it move and see it 😂 flips it over to compressor side "spins nice and freely" doesn't spin when he let's go.. Lol

The TD04 from the Aero Saab mounts to the engine just like the Garret. No custom work needed. When gt17 goes bad this is what a lot of Saab owners do.
The piping is a bit different on td04. You have to bend some coolant and oil pipes, to make it fit.
