All in I think this is a really decent system. It will quickly drain the battery of connected devices so I suggest having many USB battery packs nearby to keep everything running when running remotely.
I would like to see some controls for adjusting audio sync as some HDMI devices might throw a delay into the mix if you're bringing in line audio.

Notes: (I'll likely update this as questions come in):
Audio sync : It seems to work ok with the iPhone cameras and straight line-in. In my review I was running the video and audio out of my Tricaster which could have introduced a little delay on the outbound audio when looking at the iPhone footage. I think this might be an issue others will encounter when bringing in HDMI audio due to potential camera processing. Having some audio/video delay options to sync things up would be nice to see in future revisions.
Chromakey: There is currently no chromakey on this device.

Nope. And be sure you understand how my channel works: my view count on my videos in the early days are typically low. Products like this do much better over time as people look for information on them.
Overall July 2017 had over 1.14 million views, up about 100k from this time last year. Subscriber count is slow and steady which is fine by me. Building this or any business takes time and hard work. It just doesn't happen automatically unless you're that nut in California pissing off his neighbors :). But that kind of thing is short lived. I'm in it for the long haul.

Wow... congrats to the company for making this thing work so well.
It sounds like a nightmare to figure out how to make so many devices work together without problems.
Very interesting, thanks for the comprehensive review Lon.
Aside from sporting events and whatnot, I'd imagine this must be the most portable way of having a multi-cam livestream of sorts outside professional and really expensive solutions.
Different beast altogether, but I remember doing some research for my journalism course on a suitcase style broadcasting thing which you could insert multiple SIM cards (or use wi-fi if available) for transmission, and connect multiple smartphone cameras (with other options like HDMI, SDI) to cover something... like in disaster areas or in the boonies. xD But this was like almost 5 years ago, and it cost the same as a car or something.

I’ve used this a couple of times for corporate videos since your unboxing, and each time the device has surpassed my expectations. TH-cam live events and the interaction from the sling studio have caused the only problems. Note that selecting Live from the device makes the event live on TH-cam. I learned this the hard way after testing an event, ending the test, then having to make a new TH-cam event and then resend the link to all the attendees and embedded locations. It was a disaster. I have since moved to only doing a standard livestream (without a YT event) and sending the link out only when live. I use a ppt on a laptop with a static slide into the slingstudio hdmi until we are ready to broadcast.

Your review is one of the best I have seen on this product. When having the unit record all cameras which are connected, does this automatically record audio from each no matter what you have checked in the audio mixer? Do iPhones have to be on a cellular service to function as a camera only for Sling Studio? Thanks for the great review. I hope Sling Studio gives you some sort of discount should you decide to buy one.

Great Review and Tutorial. Now that you've used this for over 6 months, A) did you buy it or nay? B) If purchased, what's your opinion now after some work with the unit? The sample video at the top link revealed some jerky like lag and wonder if that has since been resolved with firmware updates? Also, what happens if the uplink tops out at just over 3.0mbps? That is, is there a reduced quality or does the unit drop video/sound or get choppy? Thanks again for this great video !!! Dr. D.

Lon, it's been several months since you posted this video (and my third time to watch it). I am curious if you have any new thoughts on using the Sling Studio. My interest is in non-studio locations (live streaming musical performances). Battery life (lives?) is (are) the primary reason why I have not already purchased it. If I get it, I am reconciled to the fact that I will need to run power to at least one or two cameras, so that I am guaranteed broadcast feed. So as I began, I am curious if you are still keen on the Sling Studio, has your interests waned, or perhaps you have found something better in the meantime?? Thanks. Enjoy your videos.

  • @drdimento

Awesome Review! Thanks! How do you get the thing live on TH-cam or Facebook "live" ? I see a lot of videos reviewing this thing and what it will do live, but not one yet that shows it actually "live" and how to set it up. All the vids actually seem like just click "go live" and its going except "WHERE?" and how to make that "where" visible to others. Thanks.

Wow, I have absolutely no need for this device, yet I watched the entire video because it was done that well! Seriously, this could be an official product guide! Im highly disappointed in the piss-poor compatibility list (which isn't in the description btw!), but if they improve that than this thing could be killer.
p.s. do you know if you could drop cameras in and out on the fly to effectively support more than 4 cameras?

Few questions: 1. Did you try to use GoPro hero 5 as a source via micro HDMI to cameralink? 2. what happens if the source that you plug in directly to slingstudio in the back is 4k, will it downscale and it will work? 3. Did you try to use cameralink with external battery USB charger to check if this would give you extended time to stream? 4. When you stream to facebook can you choose what to stream as a fan page or as a personal account?

This is awesome. But it will be nice if we are be able to do simultaneous streaming on Facebook and TH-cam with Sling Studio. I am thinking that if we plug a Digital AV or VGA adapter on our apple device, connect it via Ultrastudio Mini Recorder, and then into our Mac book which we would have already had Wirecast installed. Then through Wirecast we can do simultaneous streaming to Facebook and TH-cam. Would this work? Please reply.

How long is the delay. I’m thinking about getting this for my church. But I would need to use the Hdmi out to run the feed to several monitors around the church for praise and worship lyrics. So is the hdmi out feed the same as the livestream feed?

  • @NikNikam

I take it that delay of 1-2 seconds may not be useful in a concert hall where you want to project the artist on the LED screen behind. How does Blackmagic H.264 work in terms of delay if we want to use this mixer in a live concert or Gala events?

I have a DVX200 and it has ssdi. Could I connect to the HUB or would you think I would need the camera link?
Hopefully one more question. I recorded an event and it had a few projectors that were hooked to a laptop. I didn't have long enough cable to reach and had to scrap that idea. Could I be able to stream the footage to the laptop as long as I have the software installed to it and have wifi to see the hub?

What are your thoughts on the sling studio today?

  • @RockstarBruski
    @RockstarBruski 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This is very interesting. Great review! Two questions.
    1. Do you see lag only on wireless cameras or on wired cameras as well?
    2. If you use line in audio and you video a person talking with all 4 wired or wireless cameras does the broadcasted and or recorded audio sync correctly or are some out of sync?
At my church We use the blackmagic ATEM television studio with cameras connected via sdi cables and an audio line in from a main audio mixboard and our audio syncs perfectly and program monitor has no lag so that is important to us. While the sling has a great price im not sure we could use something like this bc of the lag and the people on stage would be walking out of frame before a switch to the next camera could be made. Also as you say battery life wouldnt work for us as we have everything powered. Maybe this could be used to augment our system with a remote camera for occasional use.

So... after a long & unsuccessful attempt at making the Mevo work for our church... I'm now looking for other alternatives. Our hiccup with the Mevo is that it's app does funky things to the low end of audio. The drums & bass sound terrible if recording live music - especially EDM style music. So my question on this Slingstudio is... did you do any testing of the audio... to see how well it does or does not record live music? Yes, we're using an external board, etc to totally control the mix & the feed going into the Mevo. It's on the app end of the workflow that the bass gets tweaked. So... I'm wondering if the Slingstudio app has the same issue or not? Your thoughts? Or... is there a way we could talk offline on this perhaps?

Wondering what kind of resolution the recorded video tracks on SD card will have. For example, if I feed a 1080p60 input via HDMI and another from my Camera via CameraLink at 1080p60, will I get all those recorded on the SD car will also have that original resolution? I am asking because I am thinking of using those video and audio tracks into my Final Cut Pro for Post Production.
Another thing is about Chroma Key support. It does not mention about it all. This is very crucial for me.
And a general comment is that if they provided two HDMI direct inputs instead of one, that would have been an amazing thing because you don't have to but the costly CameraLink!
    Thank you!

Yes ultimately NDI is much more flexible. I haven't had as much success streaming NDI from my phones as I had here, I'm hoping we'll see some improvements in NDI 3.

I dont see reference to this but SlingStudio also provides plugins for Premier Pro and Final Cut Pro to import all your recordings (ISOs and program) along with EDL (edit decision list) data into your post production tool so all your edits/transitions that you did in real time appear in the timeline.
    Premier plugin - SlingStudio extension

It can have 4 active at any given time but you can have others in the background. But they have to be swapped in.

What solutions do you prefer for a controlled studio environment? Or if we could have only one solution that was good in studio and in the field, what should we look at?

What's the budget? I'm big on the Tricasters for studio environments. Rock solid and tons of flexibility with NDI.

Hello, i want to setup two camera links , one camera with hdmi directly into sling studio hub, and one external line in mic for audio, will there be any sync issues between, camera link connected cameras and line in mic? i want to live stream, and its a local dance show, so it is not acceptable that line in audio and camera link video is out of sync, if there is any delay its okay, but audio and video should be in sync, guys please help me

I use SS in my church - 2 cameras running with the Sling wireless cam links, and a direct HDMI feed of a laptop running slides into the SlingStudio hub. The one mic that is used by the pastor runs into a multichannel board, with an output directly into the hub audio input. Lots of camera switching, but the audio line remains consistent. However, the cameras are all muted, so I can't say how it would be running multiple audio pickups and switching. If you use the one line like you mention you will be fine.

    • @LonSeidman

It will only switch four cameras at once but I think others can be held in reserve to be brought into the system for live switching.

As Sling Studio does not support chroma key, it is the only single reason I cannot go for it. I have to go with another product just because of this lack of functionality. It is very sad that it does not provide chromo key filtering! Any suggestion for equivalent product in that price range? thank you!

    • @danmiller7870
      @danmiller7870 6 ปีที่แล้ว

might I suggest the BlackMagic Television Studio HD. Lon mentions this as the device that really helped him start the channel, but it has been updated significantly since then. Although the TV Studio HD is a switcher (and isn't wireless), it has been updated to include chromakey, PIP, control audio levels coming in from camera sources, and much more. You will still need an encoder/streaming device such as a Teradek to run the program signal to to broadcast it and this solution will cost a bit more it works well.

Also how about you recognize that there are other dealers in the USA other than B&H. It's not like B&H gave you the unit to use. So it would be helpful with all your great reviews you tell customers to see or find their local dealer. Supporting local businesses is what drives states and communities.
