    I love watching this set up. I can watch this a millions of times and will never get tired of it. I am also a SS user and been going for over 2 years already. Never had a problem. If I did it'd be a minor glitch. Go Sling Studio!!

      @@JacksonReels A few questions, 1) what distance from the sling hub are you comfortable with for an iPhone and for the Sling link? 2) Do you have a link to the created video, or anything done with the equipment that shows the final product and gives an idea of clarity. 3) what sort of upload speeds do you consider to be a minimum. 4)Have you tried uploading over a hotspot connection, say 4G?

      Great set up @Chad!
      I can't wait to see how the final video was.
      Could you please give more detail about the Drone set up? And about the other WiFi transmitter that is not from SlingStudio? What have you chosen that one instead of another one from SlingStudio? Thanks!

    • @JacksonReels
      @JacksonReels 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kiwicodger 1) Distance is all relative. We've tested the SS Camera Links and they can work over 400ft but I would say I'm comfortable under their advertised 300ft. BUT walls break down the signal, a bodies can break down the signal, at long distances moving the transmitter around can break down the system. At this specific event we're running into issues with wifi crowding. I don't understand it all but when the Sling get's 1,000+ device connection requests it can cause issues. The network is password protected but the requests take up data traffic too. It's not just the Sling. The ikan had major issues too.
      2) Here's the link to the final video: facebook.com/cedarville/videos/716133295466576/ I goofed and pressed the wrong button on our RTMP streaming app and facebook didn't start broadcasting until 5 min into our program.
      3) We have super fast internet on campus and I always use a hardline connection for our broadcast so I don't get anywhere close to minimums. I've heard other people say they've broadcasted as low as 2Mbps but they might have been on 720p.
      4) I've not tried a hotspot. Most slingers who need to go mobile use the LiveU Solo.

    • @chadpjackson
      @chadpjackson  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@carlosvaquerofoto The final video is here. facebook.com/cedarville/videos/716133295466576/ The drone is a Mavic 2 Pro with a CrystalSky monitor which gave us the HDMI out. I've added an equipment list to the description.
      One reason we used the ikan blitz is that we only have 3 SS camera links and the ikan gives us a 4th wireless signal. The ikan also has a longer range. We've used it to transmit across the lake before. For this event it did NOT do well though. We're still testing to see what happened. Testing was fine but once 1,000 people showed up with all their mobile devices our signal quality dropped drastically.

  • @chadpjackson
    @chadpjackson  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That's the ikan transmitter. We had a good 400ft of range before the event and then 1,000+ mobile devices swarmed around it in a very high density. My IT guys are saying that there's just way too much wireless congestion. The Sling cameralinks were also running on "poor" signals. We're working on possible ways to improve but there's not a whole lot we can do.

    • @CMMedia692
      @CMMedia692 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perhaps if your transmitter along with the camera links were elevated a bit higher? You think that'd help?

    • @chadpjackson
      @chadpjackson  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CMMedia692 Very possible. It's so hard to test because we only have the problem during the event when all the wifi interference is active. We're going to do this event again in a couple months but we won't be using Sling. We still hav Sling but we also have a Blackmagic ATEM switcher. We'll run SDI cables to all the cameras so we don't have to deal with wifi signals. I might use Sling or the Ikan Blitz for the drone so it doesn't have to be tethered. I could have a SDI cable on standby if we have issues. We'll see.

      @chadpjackson  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Mavic Pro 2 standard remote does not have HDMI out. You have two options. You can upgrade to the DJI smart remote or buy the DJI Crystal Sky monitor. We have two Crystal Sky monitors so we can fly our Mavic Pro 2 and our Mavic Air at the same time. The Crystal sky gives you a big bright screen along with a clean HDMI out.

    • @realtorealvideo
      @realtorealvideo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      One more question about the drone cables from the drone remote to the monitor. I know I need a HDMI cable form transmitter to monitor to get a clean out, what cable do I use from DJI remote to monitor? USB-C cable? I do own a LED smallHD 5 inch monitor for my Sony cameras and was trying to connect that with the drone to the sling studio but wasn't sure about the cable. Thanks.

    • @chadpjackson
      @chadpjackson  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@realtorealvideo The connection into the Crystal Sky is USB C. Your Sony monitor will not be any help. The Crystal Sky isn't just a monitor. It runs the DJI software that your phone would normally run.
      There is one hack method we used that gets your drone feed without additional expense (assuming you have a spare computer). The DJI app on your phone will allow you to stream directly to youtube or facebook. Set up a private stream from the drone and bring it up full screen on a computer. From there you can just bring the computer in as a source. We did this once and it worked fine. The quality of the streamed video wasn't perfect and there is a bit of a delay but neither of those were deal breakers for us.

  • @anonymousaccount100
    @anonymousaccount100 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video! I saw on the soundboard that you have two output cables connected that might be 1/4", but then on sling it's just a 3.5mm single input. How are they connected exactly? And you don't notice any degradation in quality by just using the unbalanced line-in?
    And I was wondering how the Sling was connected to the laptop? If it's via the Sling's hotspot, does that mean your laptop is running on ethernet? Since its wifi has to be used to connect to sling. Many thanks!

    • @chadpjackson
      @chadpjackson  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We sold our Sling unit over a year ago so this is by memory.
      We bought an audio cable that had 3.5mm on one end and split into RCA on the other end. We then had 2 RCA to 1/4" adapters to get them into our board.
      You're correct that the laptop running the Sling Console had to be connected to the Sling hub wireless signal. The hub was connected to the internet via ethernet so technically the laptop can still get through to the internet via the hub connection but we never wanted to choke up the bandwidth. If we needed internet on the controlling laptop (to monitor the public stream on Facebook for example) we would have the laptop connected to ethernet.

    Is it easy to go back and forward with the ipad app and the laptop option? I come from the tricaster so having an actual computer Im most used to. However love the quickness or portablity of having the ipad option.

    • @chadpjackson
      @chadpjackson  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We have a tricaster for larger productions so I know what you're talking about. Only one device can be running the console app at a time but you can switch. You can start on the laptop and during production you can close the app and then open the console app on an iPad. The production will continue to stream from the Sling Studio hub because all the computer processing is happening on the hub. The console app is just a way to control what the hub is doing.

    Great Video .. we are a small church of about 200 people and we want to start with live streaming, we are looking at the sling studio with 3 camera link connected to 2 Go pro Hero 7 + 1 Sony a6400 ... and I was also looking to broadcast internally with this system, to possible 2 or 3 tv's on the 1st floor ( Daycare, Pastors offices and waiting area ... how should I go about duplicating the feed to these overflow rooms ? or is it better to simply have something like a Chromecast connected to those tvs and using youtube or facebook live stream ? or is there another piece of equipment I could use to send the feeds to other output ?

    • @chadpjackson
      @chadpjackson  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like fun! Sling Studio is a great solution if a wireless connection to your camera is important. If running wires is an option, there are cheaper options out there. The Black Magic ATEM mini for example is fantastic.
      As far as simulcasting, you're on the right track. If running wires to those locations isn't too much trouble then you might consider a CAT-5 splitter. You'll run out of the HDMI out on the Sling hub into a splitter that runs CAT5 cables to all your tvs and then goes through another adapter to get back to HDMI. This can be more work and more cost but it's a bit more reliable. Most places just use a smart TV or Roku or Fire stick etc. to stream the video over the web. The main down side is that there's more of a delay doing it this way.
      If you ever want to have a live video in the same room as the action, Sling does have a low latency option that lowers quality but removes most of the delay created from the wireless transmitters. The delay will never completely go away though. If you want IMAG (image magnification) you're going to need to go with a wired system.
      Check out the Sling Studio users group on facebook for more info. Lots of people have talked about this topic and there are some product suggestions posted about the CAT5 splitters. Just use the search feature.

      Most problems people have with Sling is when they try to push it to do more than it was built for. It's not a perfect solution for everyone. Weddings is a perfect application. The only significant problem we've had is when using it in a large crowd (1000+) densely packed with lots of devices connected to an enterprise Wifi system in the same area. All the wifi traffic chokes up the spectrum and Sling runs into interference and drops signals. This is a common situation for us on a college campus but rare most other places. Check out the Sling Studio user group on facebook. You can scroll through and see the specific issues people have.
      Other concerns is lack of support. Sling sends people to the facebook group with they have troubles. And lack of improvements. Sling has not put out any updates in over a year. What you see is what you get and you have to assume there won't be any improvements to the software. There are lots of other alternatives to Sling but none that are built on wifi. If you are okay with wires then check out the Blackmagic ATEM mini for example.

    You're doing an amazing job showcasing the SlingStudio! I've requested permission to join the SlingStudio Facebook group (as you've suggested to others!), so maybe they can answer my question once I'm approved, but I thought I'd ask you since you seem like the most knowledgeable SlingStudio user I've found so far. What has been your experience with using content from a computer/tablet/external USB drive? For instance, if you were live-streaming a speaker who had a powerpoint presentation on their computer, could you use an HDMI splitter to tap into the feed that would otherwise be going straight to a video projector? I want to be able to mirror my iPad Pro screen while I draw in the Procreate app (while I'm lecturing at the university I teach at), and bring it into the SlingStudio Hub like any other video source. Any information you could provide would be super helpful!

      Thanks MarkowskyArt. Any device with an HDMI signal can be plugged into Sling. Lots of people use the one HDMI-in port to bring in graphics from powerpoint. You can even use chroma key to do a lower third or something like that. Just keep in mind that the computer or ipad input uses one of your four active input signals.

    Hi Chad! You seem to know far more about the SlingStudio than anyone that I have came across. I do not have a Sling currently, but am looking to rent one in the future.
    Do you know if it would be possible to run a computer feed into the Sling for playback of lower thirds and other keyed objects? I know the Sling has a native option to push thirds onto the screen, but I would rather push it from the computer.
    I have seen where you can key something and leave it overlayed with something in the background, but I did not know if you could change the background once it was set without messing up the object that is keyed.
    Hope that makes sense!

    • @chadpjackson
      @chadpjackson  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can! However it uses one of your four active video inputs. The computer with graphics just connects via hdmi and sling can key out the background.

      @@brycescruggs1000 Yes. SS added chroma key capabilities at some point last year. You can set one of the inputs to be an overlay and key out a color. If your input supports a transparent alpha channel you don't even need to mess with the chroma key. I've not yet had a need to set up this way but many users in the FB group do this often. How does the USB-C expander work when connecting an ethernet cable? does the sling no longer produce a separate wifi signal that you connect to? i'm interested because i know in our gym there is a connection where it appears we can directly connect to the internet. wondering how this affects the setup of the sling studio if then for another application you need it to broadcast without the ability to connect to a hardline.

    • @chadpjackson
      @chadpjackson  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Sling Hub has two networks. One is for the various phone or Camera Link inputs as well as the device running the Console app. The outbound stream goes out on a second network. This can be sent over wifi or it can be sent via ethernet using the usb-c expander. Using a hardline to send your stream out is highly recommended. BTW Your mac or ipad connects wirelessly to the Sling Hub to produce the stream. This means that any internet usage on your mac or ipad is coming through the hub. Not a big deal but that was confusing to me at first.

    • @MDFariasMusic
      @MDFariasMusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chad P Jackson so in theory if I connected directly to the hub with just one camera by HDMI the only thing that would be using WiFi produced by the hub would be the iPad or Mac using the app for controlling the broadcast and then have the stream go out via Ethernet?

    • @chadpjackson
      @chadpjackson  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      MDfariasmusic You are correct. Technically your stream will continue even if you disconnect your console app device after the stream is started. In that case you would be zero wifi but you would have zero control too but with only one source that’s not a big deal.

    • @chadpjackson
      @chadpjackson  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Technically I think you can have 10 connected BUT you can only have four active at any time. The non-active sources sit in a list. You can drag any non-active source to one of the active windows to swap at any time. It's been a while since I used Sling but on desktop I think there is a plus sign next to the input preview strip that opens the sources panel.

    • @chadpjackson
      @chadpjackson  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Olia Molloy I’m not sure I follow exactly what you’re trying to do. If you record in 4K on each of your cameras locally while also sending a feed to Sling studio, what you’ll end up with at the end of the shoot is a HD version of your footage on Sling and a 4K version of your footage on each of your cameras. I’ve never done it but what I understand is that you have to save the Sling files to your computer and then replace the HD clips with the 4K clips for each camera. I’m not sure if you name them the same as the HD clips or if they just have to be in the same folder. The main thing to understand is that when you use the Sling plugin for Premier to sync all your footage, the 4K footage will be dropped in place of the HD footage. That’s how I understand it’s supposed to work. There are Sling users in the Facebook group that have experience with this process. You may consider joining that group and asking there.

      Any device with a HDMI out signal can connect to the Sling. That includes drones. The problem is that most drones don't include an HDMI out. We fly a Mavic Pro 2 and Mavic Air. The controller does not have HDMI out. We had to purchase the DJI Crystal Sky which provided us with an alternative to using a phone for a screen and has a clean HDMI out. From there we just run a cable to a Sling Studio transmitter.

    Chad, first off, thanks for this video. I'm still weighing all the options, but this video and your other one on Slingstudio is pretty convincing. I have a question regarding battery power. I read one review (not here) that claimed that if you plug in an external battery to the camera link to go beyond their 2 hours charge that they stop working. If I heard you correctly, you stated that you plug yours in to Anker PowerCore chargers. Have you experienced this issue? 2 hours is not a lot of time and I'd hate to think that I'd need to purchase multiple camera links to swap them out like batteries. Thanks for you help. Sling Console app has a battery monitor for all connected devices so you can see if a transmitter is getting low. We typically plug ours in to batteries 90% of the time just to be safe. Good luck!
