For anyone who is interested , Australia invented this style of car back in 1948 and we called it a UTE , short for utility . Its was based on our 4 door sedans , a farmer that had a 4 door family sedan cut the back off to put hay in the back to feed his sheep and cattle as he drove around his pattocks .

Scotty As a driveway mechanic but former owner of a car dealership I commend your general knowledge. A V8 is a reciprocating engine. A GM ball and screw steering system is called a recirculating ball steering box. I just wanted to correct that minor error. Also there was a 3 year gap from 61-63 when Chev stopped making the El Caminos. We had an El Camino like that one and it could tow a huge trailer with the old 350. They are really handy vehicles. Thanks Scotty!

It's not his passion, It's more that economy is in the shitter thanks to the Democrats, I've seen more Classic Cars back on the road in the last 3 years than I did in the 30 years before that, and it's not just the "Cool" classics, most of them have been the mid-late 70's Smog and Malaise Era cars, cars like this 4th gen El Camino, that 10 years they wouldn't have touched with a 10 foot pole, People by large no longer have 40-60 grand to go out and buy a new car but they do have 3-5k to go out and buy a "Undesireable" classic car/truck and spend another 4 or 5k and put it back on the road and daily drive it, a recent article by the American Insurance Association said that 25% (82.2 million) of the U.S. population have a Vintage Car (25-50 years old) registered and insured as a daily driver, In 2015 it was less than 4%. (roughly 11 million), it's went up over 600% in the last 8 years. I haven't seen as many mid-late 70's cars on the road or at Cruise-ins/Cars and Coffee's since I was a kid/teen in the early-mid 80's.

Scotty my first car in 1975 was a 1973 Chevy Chevelle Deluxe with a 350 V8 2 barrel for $1,400 and it was smooth and fast (bought it in Houston before I graduated from Baylor University). It had been a Baroid Oil Drilling service car and it was one of the best running vehicles I ever had and had ice cold air conditioning. It was light yellow with a green interior so it had the Baylor school colors.

Had a 1973 Dodge dart and a 1973 Pontiac LeMans. 1973 Plymouth satalite, 1976 Cadillac El Dorado, 1975 Buick Electra limited, 1974 Chrysler Newport, 1976 Pontiac Grand Prix, 1978 Plymouth Volare, 1977 Caprice classic , 1969 Coronet 440, 1979 Lincoln continental. I fixed , drove all these cars and then raced and wrecked most in figure 8, enduro races, demolition derbys.

Paint isn't great and interior needs work, but at the price I got it, I couldnt find anything within 500 miles in it's condition for double what I paid. My favorite cars ever made.

In Australia we call them Ute's, short for Utility Vehicles and they were and still are very popular. You get the comfort of a car and the convenience of a light truck. Back in the day Ford, GM Holden and Chrysler all made Ute's but these days it's all Japanese pick-up trucks which are pretty darn good in their own right.
