A friend owns a large local plumbing contracting buisiness replaced his six Ford Transit and Ford 2500 vans with new Ram Promaster Vans two years ago. All of the Ford vans, four 3.5L V6 and two older V10 models had well over 150,000 miles each, with only one needing a transmission replacement. So far, the Promasters have had major electrical issues, several have needed transmission repairs and one, a new engine. His biggest complaint is how much his crews loath driving the Promasters with their stupid upright, jammed into the dash driving position. He got a "deal" for the bulk buy from a Ram dealer, but he wishes he would have gone Ford again.
Love the channel, but sometimes just outrageous. I own two transit cargo 250 , low roof, 3.5 twin turbo V6 . Both have had regular oil changes and maintenance. Both are work vans , loaded with tools. Both have over 200k miles and Zero problems. Horrible seats but very reliable and good gas mileage for a loaded van . Extremely quick and powerful motors.
US Post Office is using brand new Mercedes vans. I shake my head every time I pass a USPS Mercedes van knowing how much money is going down the drain in repairs and knowing the Post Office will probably keep buying them. The Post Office can probably get by using Toyota Siennas, don't you think?
I swear those vans drive way better than they have any right to.... for their size they're downright nimble and fun to drive .......and they're actually pretty good on gas aswell
I drive one of these picking up students for work, and I was SHOCKED the first day they had me on the route. These vans are fun to drive and feel very stable.
I knew a guy had a sprinter paid $75-$80 thousand for it 5 cyl turbo diesel turbo. Turbo split in half first trip through the mountains. Got it fixed and sold it. Lucky to 16 for it when he sold. Bought a Nissan full sized van. Much happier
@jamesmedina2062 I didn't say how many km he had on it before this happened, just that at was the first trip. Pretty sad for a vehicle of that expense to be that weak
Here in the UK this van is fitted with an engine that runs a wet cambelt. Stupid design, engine oil and cambelts do not mix, many failures, I wouldn't have one.
Here's a solution: Toyota should make a version of the Sienna with a roofline that is raise about five to ten inches.. I might even buy a Sienna with a higher roofline. To tell you the truth, I think current Sienna has a roofline that is way too low.
@@owen7412 Thanks for letting me know.. I think I found a Proace on youtube.. Looks like it does have a higher roofline and more room than the current Sienna.. But I think it may (unfortunately) come in electric only?? If its electric only that is a shame.. Be nice if it came with a V6 and smooth shifting 8 speed tranny..
@@Drewcardello Thanks Drew.. That is a shame .. If a higher Sienna roofline can't handle the drag.. Be nice if Toyota would go ahead and raise the roofline 4 inches on the Sienna.. and just beef up the powertrain.. Give it a V6 with it an 8 speed tranny that the Grand Highlander or Lexus GX has.. BTW.. I would gladly take less MPG..
I was ready to pull the trigger on buying a connect, but was surprised to learn that my insurance (as well as others) will not insure these for personal use. Even with paying commercial rates, there are restrictions as well as higher cost.
My 2016 transit has had 10k in repairs this year: bad wheel bearing, bad lifter, leaking thermostat, bad A/C compressor, and the pinion gear now hums. It has 110k miles.
That is what happens when you don't repair your vehicles yourself. Oil changes are necessary at 5K miles too. It is an easy truck to work on, especially compared to the econoline.
I had an earlier Transit, and have driven employers’ and hired Transits of later types. Not with American market engines, though, I live where hey were designed for. Good points for all of them: Space. comfort. Brisk performance for their size. Surprisingly good handling, so that brisk performance never gets you in trouble. Tough engines. Bad points: Body rattle. Rust, starting at the doors. Overall verdict: Not as nice as VWs , but if price is an issue, worth getting
If you do a rear brake job on these vans have a new not rebuilt brake calipers installed, buy from Ford. Just the piece that has the piston in it. Have your mechanic rebuild the slides. This will save you having the brakes dragging and have to do all over again. Also it would be best to take it to a shop that can turn the rotors on the van if needed. Changing the rotors cost more that most light truck because of parts and labor. The rotor is inboard of the hub. The hub has to be removed. 32 bolts are one time use and cost 4 or 5 bucks each.
Here in New Zealand over the years various manufacturers have sold couriers deals on vans. Within a short period they all back to the Toyota Hiace after getting burnt. Probably not what they used to be, but still better than everything else.
If they have the galvanized running boards and the wood slats in the cargo area they are used U-haul vans, u-haul is almost single handedly supplying the used van market. They only keep them for one year or a specific mileage. I’ve gotten my last three work vans from auctions and they all cam from U-haul, all of them still running great.
The company I work for uses these in their fleet. We have a lot of the old E250s from 2009 that they are slowly upgrading from. I am the only one in the fleet with a Chevy Express 2500, and I refuse to upgrade to a transit. It has way less space, seats are hard, and just not as tough as my van or the old e2500s. They are nice for light workflows, but when you carry around as much junk as I do, you need more space.
Biggest mistake Ford made was to discontiniue the E-150 / E 250 / E350.... But Ford seems to be on a mistake roll these days. lololoolol Thx for sharing
If Ford spent more time making AFFORDABLE, QUALITY vehicles, and less time trying to shut down ANY TH-cam channel we would all be better off! Perhaps we would buy more Ford products and not regret it! 🤔
One thing that intrigues me about the electronic brake. If you have a manual gearbox and you are on a hill, how do you stop the car rolling back when accelerating forward after a stop at some lights or road sign. The "handbrake" made this an easy job. (1 of the more difficult of the tests when initially going for my License test back in the 70's.)
Most vehicles these days have what is called “Brake Hold” it auto applies hydraulic braking when the vehicle comes to a full stop. You can take your foot off the brake and the car will not move until the accelerator is depressed.
I have a 2023 Mustang GT with a manual transmission. It will keep the brakes on until you start to engage the clutch so no worries about rolling back. You can also turn this feature off. Subaru had this years ago and I believe they called it a “hill holder”.
If they put that 3.5 litre v6 in a smaller, lighter vehicle it could get over 30mpg. So why are we ruining cars with gdi, turbo, cvt, hybrid and other things that make cars unreliable? A porker of a vehicle that gets 22mpg with a v6 is quite good. Im sure some day that v6 will go bye bye and get replaced with a 2.slow twin turbo, gdi.... that will last 1/8th as long. And the biggest slap in the face is that it would get 23-24mpg with all that "fuel saving" tech. 👎
0:50 actually fun fact in Japan they do got big size mini vans. Seen alot and we're quite shown a couple of times in Anime. :) but other than that the Vans out there are really nice different Honda and Toyota, Nissan vans out there too
If DEI hiring is NOT used for airline pilots, then it should NOT be used anywhere else. Keep them Honest Scotty. You're a great American and human being. Thanks for all you do! (FORD should hire Scotty for CEO!)
Iv'e got one for you. Ford Transit 3.2 diesel low boost code. Two dealers (second one was escalated to Ford Pro) said we need a turbo. I looked at it and found the charge cooler completely packed solid. Weeks before this, it went in for an airbox (engine air filter) water intrusion 'Customer Satisfaction Program 15B39' where the tech found the air filter was soaked and falling apart. The cooler was packed with turbo shredded air filter. Ford is sticking with their tech's diagnosis.
I drive a 2005 Taurus Station Wagon...pretty good car except transmission is Sluggish. Sometimes takes 3 seconds before it actually kicks into gear when cold.
Just rented one for a move from uhaul . Runs okay but it’s hilarious when you stomp on it it makes a rocket ship of noise but almost nothing happens in terms of acceleration
My company van just broke down again. It is a Mercedes Sprinter van 2500. This time the transmission has failed. A new transmission is about $6,000.00. My company is going to retire the van. They gave me a Ford transit van. However, it is a turbo diesel. I hope it does better. It does drive better than the Mercedes that I used to drive. Thoughts?
With Ford it seems what matters is the model. We know about their lemons (Pinto, Granada, newer lemons). Good models Ranger truck, Mustang, Aerostar to name some
My candy company has about 75 Chevrolet Express 3500 vans. I personally have traveled over 480,000 miles in the last 8 years in 2 of my issued vans. They get about 16 mpg and do a pretty good job. They can hold a whole lot more than the Ford van you have featured here. My company currently has about 20 vans on order, but GM keeps delaying us. We received a few last month, but they don’t come quick enough for our demand. Us route salesman drive our vans to 250,000 miles then get a new van, then our company sells them. However, some salesman have had to drive their vans to 300,000+ because we can’t get vans fast enough. Nevertheless, they serve us well.
I see a lot of those vans around that are used by self -employed mechanics, electricians and plumbers. There very good vans and what’s impressive is that I’ve seen the new vans that are taller with a living studio inside; with bed, kitchen set up, bathroom and shower and table. Price tab on those were about 300 k back in 2008. Those are literally made for long drive traveling business trips with high end hotel like luxury living.
Transit owner here. Had 2014 model it melted a piston then a turbo then melted another piston . Great actual van but chocolate engines. 2.2 rwd diesel. Sprinters are still better they go 700,000km
DAV near here bought one ...transmission let go in first month...due to drivers unaware of the button on select knob changing gearing. Plus the trans has an overdrive on - off setting. It defaults to off. Not good for spinning down highway unload with overdrive off. A fella told the DAV volunteer driver coordinator to hold a 10 minute class so all the old coggers would know what to look for. Nope so the gearbox took a dump in first month...😢
Too small for me. I need a full sized van for my construction business. I've owned four Econolines, and I loved them. But they stopped making the full-sized version.
I’ve got a 2012 transit connect. I originally slept in it for a couple years. Nowadays I use it to deliver packages. I’m definitely not a fan of the cheap plastic and rubber under the hood. Fortunately it’s very easy to work on yourself. Overall better than the Nissan NV200 with the CVT transmission and the Dodge Promaster with the Fiat engine.
It’s a nice thing that you didn’t beat up the Ford, van. Many positive comments were made. But really I’m all in with the America first agenda! Outside of two, German cars under the Ford umbrella, (1974 Capri) I’ve have never owned a non American vehicle. AMC Hornet, Buick Century, two Ford pickup trucks, and literally 23 Chevy’s during my lifetime.
You know you're in the US looking at the engine. Have a same size van and it has a 1.6 diesel engine, built in the UK, this thing has a 3.5 liter gas guzzler in it ! 22 miles a gallon...........ouch, mine does 38, same size van !
Who cares if they get upset...long as its the truth and is with Scotty . Build a better mousetrap people we want stuff that lasts, is simple affordable and doesnt fold up like a tin can if you sneeze near it
When I was young if you had a family especially five or more you had either a big GM Clamshell wagon (or an equally big Ford LTD wagon) or a van. Vans back then were really nice. They had a lot of features included. Now everything is an overpriced SUV that isn't nearly as big or as good.
Best van I ever drove was a Mercedes sprinter roughly 15 years ago, yep that’s how good it was that I remember it drove a ford transit after that and it was a dog , son in law drives the new sprinter the one with seating behind the front seats, says it’s one of the best out there,
The best van out there is made by White Freightliner/Mercedes. The only company to offer a tandem axle van that is tall enough you do not need to bend over to walk in. It is complete form follows function design with a powerful turbo diesel that allows you to tow just about anything while still giving you 16+ MPG. I have never understood why the Big 3 never made a tandem axle van for work and business, only trucks.
Is that the same 3.5 Ford puts in the edge? If so 4000 dollar water pump change hole front of the motor has to come apart and with all the timing stuff there you mite as well change that stuff too .
I drove a 1974 ford club wagon and a 1972 ford econoline with C6 transmissions and 302V8. They were much better made then the modern plastic computer controlled junk Ford makes today!
The Ford's guilty over against Scotty smh. Ford's made mistakes to making too many ecoboost engines. I remembered back 1999 Ford Rangers with 2.5 FI 4 cylinders and 5 speeds manual was good truck. Hey Ford's get back 2.5L. Good engine!.
I often see vans of this category - I'm surprised V6 - but I guess the RAM one is V6 too. I always think they look really nice to drive - if I was younger and had a job delivering packages or something.
Brazil mentioned!! We use etanol since the 70s and most cars are flex now. People generally calculate the most cost effective based on mileage and cost of the liter. Or based on preference of autonomy vs performance as etanol normally has lower mileage but give cars extra HPs while compared with gasoline.
I see a lot of people bringing up the water pump the 3.5L and 2.7L in the pickup and van have a external water pump, on the ones I have seen and worked on.
I own three vans that are diesel five cylinder turbo got plenty of power in my 2019 has over 100,000 miles on it very little problems other than the tensioning belt pulley after about 50,000 miles goes bad. Make sure you change it and that’s itgood mileage plenty of power. Mine is a 1 ton high top i’m 6 foot four and I can stand up inside and still have 8 inches of room above my head planning on buying two more this year. Had a Mercedes and you couldn’t give me another one of them pieces of crap problems every 2 to 3000 miles.
Totally agree, Scotty! We rented two vans on a big family trip. The first van the rental car agency gave us was a Chevy Express van. Boy, what a piece of junk!!! It wofted around with horrible steering control and felt like something designed in the late 90s and the AC didn't work along with the headlights. The rental car company switched it out with the Ford passenger van and it was surprisingly fun to drive! Everything worked and overall felt like I was driving a modern vehicle and not some GM junker.

Tesla is suing me over a windshield washer pump burning up. I'M PISSED
Did you wash more windshieids than you had a right to expect?
Well you should buy Toyota, you thought they said Toyota but you thought Tesla
Tesla is junk just my opinion good luck with that washer pump
I knew a guy had a sprinter paid $75-$80 thousand for it 5 cyl turbo diesel turbo. Turbo split in half first trip through the mountains. Got it fixed and sold it. Lucky to 16 for it when he sold. Bought a Nissan full sized van. Much happier
thats why you're supposed to break in the engine first and change the oil
@jamesmedina2062 I didn't say how many km he had on it before this happened, just that at was the first trip. Pretty sad for a vehicle of that expense to be that weak
I drove one of these to Florida twice moving stuff for family. Great mileage and better ride than expected.
Your comments made me think and actually I could use a higher roof Sienna or Odyssey van.
toyota has a cargo van called Proace sold in the US
powertrain isn't designed to handle the drag. Sienna now has the same drivetrain as the camry and odyssey has the same drivetrain as the accord.
When I hear Ford and 3.5 engine, ridiculously expensive internal water pump comes to mind.
Your right about the front wheel drive base engine. The t-drive set up as in the pickup and van has a external water pump.
I was ready to pull the trigger on buying a connect, but was surprised to learn that my insurance (as well as others) will not insure these for personal use. Even with paying commercial rates, there are restrictions as well as higher cost.
Weird. I've had no problem with four Econolines.
Try Geico
I see all the cupholders for the Mountain Dew and Monster Ultras, but where do the Slim Jims and Doritos go?
Your lap
My 2016 transit has had 10k in repairs this year: bad wheel bearing, bad lifter, leaking thermostat, bad A/C compressor, and the pinion gear now hums. It has 110k miles.
Thats mostly labor. $1000 in parts. Hopefully you don't go bankrupt fixing it.
Hopefully the water pump doesn’t fall
Entire front of engine has to be opened up
That goes against what Scotty just said
That is what happens when you don't repair your vehicles yourself. Oil changes are necessary at 5K miles too. It is an easy truck to work on, especially compared to the econoline.
Don't believe that 5000 mile is better 3000@alsehl3609
Why anyone would want these complex cars is beyond me, the best cars were made from 95--2005, they should have left them alone..
Exactly. I have had 4 Econolines. Not available anymore.
Those ford keyfob suck. They eventually break from turning the ignition, they cost $200 to replace.
I still remember when Wranglerstar transformed a Transit into an RV. That was a fun project to watch.
@@mrfrankbosh ahh ok thank you, I am aware that happens with an Auto gearbox, but never knew it also applied to manual gearbox cars.
They have hill assist it doesn't take the handbrake off until you have the rpms up
I have a 2023 Mustang GT with a manual transmission. It will keep the brakes on until you start to engage the clutch so no worries about rolling back. You can also turn this feature off. Subaru had this years ago and I believe they called it a “hill holder”.
@@seanmcfadden6600 Thank you Sean.
ford's hybrid systems are very reliable. Also ford doesn't have cvts and still have port injection
DO NOT BUY THE TURBO! We had 3 in our shop and had to replace both turbos in each of them.
The only alignment adjustment you can make without taking the steer suspension apart is toe.
Scotty always advises against getting the turbo version of anything
Mine (e250) hasn’t gotten there yet, but the claim is the brake shoes wear out at 25,000 … we’ll see!
These also sell well because they are available with a high roof, unlike Chev/GMC.
E85 is also very useful in engines with boost. Keeping knock and combustion temp down and allowing more boost and timing to be added
We have a 13 Ram Tradesman truck with the V6 in the family. I tried running E85 and wow did the MPG ever drop!
My only complaint about the Transit is the lack of a third seat. I believe the European versions do have a center seat.
I had a Transit Ecoboost...pretty good BUT I had to replace the Turbo twice and I replaced an ignition coil at least once year.
I can verify that ford has gotten sloppy honoring their warranties of late. And they want 100k for their defective trucks.
Build a better mousetrap people we want stuff that lasts, is simple affordable and doesnt fold up like a tin can if you sneeze near it
Scotty: you should have checked and spoken about the maintenance on this truck such as a brake job - which is a nightmare to say the least.
When I was young if you had a family especially five or more you had either a big GM Clamshell wagon (or an equally big Ford LTD wagon) or a van. Vans back then were really nice. They had a lot of features included. Now everything is an overpriced SUV that isn't nearly as big or as good.
The Econoline vans never had V-6 engines in them!
Yeap. I had the 80's in line 6 with the column shifter.
@@wsm0069Yes that’s an inline not v

WTF is with all the sensors. It's a motor vehicle, not a spacecraft.
We got 6 of these for USPS maintenance at work and squirrels ate all of the wiring harnesses because Ford coated them with peanut oil LOL
You should have also checked about changing the water pump on the V6 - about $1,000
These are great to convert to a tiny home on wheels.
The E85 is almost half the price of gasoline here. I dont have a car that can run on it but if i did i would use it.
My SWB LR Transit 3.7 has a few quirks, but works great for travel camping !
Does that 3.5 V6 have an internal water pump? That's something he should look out for.
Luck of the draw. I rented a 2024 Ford Transit 15 passenger van last August that had 6K miles on it. What a POS.
Scotty is great guy he is always making me laugh at his comments about the car and truck industry
Is that the same 3.5 Ford puts in the edge? If so 4000 dollar water pump change hole front of the motor has to come apart and with all the timing stuff there you mite as well change that stuff too .
He drives a cargo van
He goes around schools
He shows kids stuff
He has cages in his van

I had 4 Econolibes. Used them for work and camping.
I saw that Ford is giving away and paying to install home chargers if you buy an electric car
Ny does not require the port windows. Lots of wrapped trade vans around without them.
Can you call Toyota and ask them to bring the large vans they already sell in Japan to the US. Come on Scotty you must have some pull!
I often see vans of this category - I'm surprised V6 - but I guess the RAM one is V6 too. I always think they look really nice to drive - if I was younger and had a job delivering packages or something.
Buy one, fix it up for camping. Many U tube channels on how to do them. Now if only Chevy made an Express hightop.
Toyota Hi-Ace vans have a partial front hood now so why is it still not being sold in the U.S.?
Rented the inline 5 powerstroke manual tranny version of this van in Italy. 25mpg cruising around the windy roads of Tuscany. It was a blast!
Is that you Jordan Shlansky?
@@harryshuman9637 Nope. Clever handle!
Brazil mentioned!! We use etanol since the 70s and most cars are flex now. People generally calculate the most cost effective based on mileage and cost of the liter. Or based on preference of autonomy vs performance as etanol normally has lower mileage but give cars extra HPs while compared with gasoline.
Everyone forgets about Nissans vans built exactly like the Titian especially the older models
replacing the water pump on 3.5 ford V6 ain't cheap
OMG SCOTTY ! ....RIP SCOTTY....OMG.....THIS HAS TO BE THE END NOW ? OMG.....SCOTTY.....THE DRAMA IS MORE THAN WE CAN HANDLE....OMG.
I drive a 2019 40hr a wk for 3yrs now. Pretty reliable. Company likes to skip oil change and lack of maintenance in general but it keeps going lol
I see a lot of people bringing up the water pump the 3.5L and 2.7L in the pickup and van have a external water pump, on the ones I have seen and worked on.
Thanks Scotty. You’re the best.
When he started yelling into the van I lost it 💀🤣🤣
Thanks scotty I abt to buy one very soon
All these new cars are friggin junk i drove a 1978 thunderbird for 17 years only major thing i replaced was the water pump
If i was king i would get rid of diesel except for large vehicles. Petrol only. And only EV town cars with small batteries
I can hear the bell ringing in the back round at 10:15 it means Christmas is coming.
The benefit of E85 is the engine oil will be cleaner.
Still not good
I own three vans that are diesel five cylinder turbo got plenty of power in my 2019 has over 100,000 miles on it very little problems other than the tensioning belt pulley after about 50,000 miles goes bad.
