Una mujer que lleva a lo espeso del bosque a su hija para dejarla allí y que el bosque se la lleve es sorprendida tiempo después cuando al querer asistir a un baile se da con que no tiene ningún vestido adecuado para la ocasión, es entonces cuando de lo oscuro de la bruma oye la voz de su difunta hija la cual le dice:

This is the story behind the poem/song: A maid left her child outside to die (that was common at the time in Iceland if the child was not wanted). The child died. Then this maid/working lady was going to a dance but she didn't have a dress to wear. If I remember this correctly she was in the stable milking the cows when she heard - supposedly, the ghost of her child singing this. "Don't worry mother, I'll lend you my veil to dance in."
Or more like: My mother in kví kví (in the stable where she was milking the cows) don't worry about that (því, því: the dress). I'll lend you my veil to dance in.

What I meant by saying "því means the dress" I wasn't saying that the word itself translates to DRESS. I meant to say that the dead child is saying "don't worry about that". Don't worry about THAT (what því would translate to in this case). The dead child is telling the mother not to worry about what dress she is going to wear to the ball. I was trying to say that "því" is that thing she's worrying about. THE DRESS. I'm Icelandic so it's hard for me to explain this to you, But I definitely know what því means.

I completely agree. Personally, the reason I find it scary (and also very sad) is the way the tiny infant ghost phrases it, and the emotionally dead way she is saying it... I can't tell if she is honestly trying to help her mother, or if she is taking vengeance on her mother for murdering her... I think the author of the poem intended both meanings to be equally valid, which makes the song EVEN MORE CREEPY o_O (to me at least)
P.S. The part that makes me feel the ghost is being vengeful is because she is basically saying to her mom: "I will lend you my corpse shroud... you know, the one you murdered me in... I will lend it to you, so you can go to that stupid dance that you care so much about (more than you care about me, apparently)... eat that sarcasm, bitch... dancing in the corpse shroud of the child that you murdered".
P.P.S. Plus of course that the mom ended up losing her sanity forever. The ghost might have intended for that to happen.

The lyric is from an icelandic folklore, a ghost story. The verse is spoken by an útburður (The word means a ghost of a child that after birth has been carried out to die).
The Folklore:
A child was born out of wedlock. At that time in Iceland that was a crime with hard punishment The mother had concealed her pregnancy and after giving birth to the child she wrapped it in a rag before carrying it out to die. Later she is working in a pen milking sheep along with another farmhand. There is a dance she wants to attend and she is complaining to the other woman about not having anything to wear to the dance. She then hears this verse spoken out (my not poetic translation): My mother in the pen pen/ don't worry about that that/ I will lend you my rag/ my rag to dance in. (This verse is the lyric to the folksong).The mother realizes that it is her dead child (útburður) speaking and she goes crazy and remains so the rest of her life.

@armivalkyrie Actually it is not "dear mother" since the mother is in "kvíum" that is, she was in a stable milking cows and hears this song come from under the kvíavegg/kvíawall, wall of the cowstable. I am not sure what Kví is called in English. But the child sings "my mother in kví kví, don't worry because because(the mother was sad/worried because she couldn't go to a vikivaki party since she had no fancy clothes) I shall lend ....

She had wrapped the baby in a cloth of some sort. Later the mother was going to a ball and didn't know what to wear, and then she hear the voice of the baby sing that song, telling it's mother not to worry and offering her mother the cloth she gave the baby to go dancing in it.

there are many with very haunting themes and lyrics. it depends on how they're played. this song could be played quite jollily. the typical appalachian singing voice has a loneliness to it and with the creaking fiddle it is certainly haunting. all cultures that have suffered have it reflected in their music, the appalachian people no less. the film Cold Mountain portrays that beautifully if you want to look up the soundtrack.

You are probably refering to a another poem that is written by Egill Skallagrímsson that is called: Það mælti mín móðir (My mother said). He wrote the poem after his first killing at the age of seven after which his mother said he would be a good viking. In my (not poetic) translation the poem reads: My mother said/ I should be bought/ship and beautiful oars/ to go abroad with vikings/stand up high in the pow/ steer a grand ship/then sail to the port/to hew many a man.
