    Móðir Mín Í Kví, Kví (Modir mini kvi kvi) is a traditional Folk song from Iceland, and a rather creepy lullaby. Icelandic lullabies are famed for being somehow mysterious, spectral or frightening and this one has a well known ghost story as background that you can read at the end of the video.

    The legend says a woman became pregnant out of wedlock and as that was punishable with a severe penalty she set up to abandon the child in the forest to die of exposure in the dark woods. She wrapped the creature in rags and left it to the elements. This practise was not that uncommon in the past as we can see recurrently in many fairytales. Some years later while the mother was milking the ewes she sourly complained aloud of not having fine clothes to attend a popular Ring dance (the "Vivivaki" festival") and then she heard the spectral voice of a child humming a song, precisely this one featured in the video. The ghostly voice sung
    LYRICS AND TRANSLATION
    Móðir mín í kví, kví
    kvíddu ekki því, því;
    ég skal ljá þér duluna mína
    duluna mína að dansa í,
    ég skal ljá þér duluna mína
    duluna mína að dansa í
    Mother of mine in the sheep pen
    You don't need to worry, worry
    You can wear this these rags of mine
    so you can dance and dance
    Upon hearing this the woman quickly went insane as she remembered her crime and thought the child's ghost had returned to curse her.
    I'm not native Icelandic speaker so I hope I have not mispronounced much.
    pd. Collar is FAUX fur. I do not support fur trade.
    The ghosts of these children would be called útburður, the name suggests they were often carried outside and were then left to die in the wild. They are a gangári type ghost meaning they can follow their victims but unlike the other ghosts they can actually cast a curse on a whole family for generations to come. The song in the video above comes from one of the most well-known Icelandic ghost stories.

    This is absolutely beautiful. The pronounciation is great and the fact that you don't have an Icelandic accent on it makes it seem even more out of this world, because Icelandic probably sounded a bit different in more ancient times, and makes this sound like it's actually from ancient Iceland. This is very special.

      Thank you so much. And also for making the for making the effort to leave such insightful encouraging comment. I do not speak Icelandic but I tried my best to listen to videos for foreigners. I love folklore, fairy and ghost tales. I've always felt intrigued by Icelandic elves and ghosts... and honestly I hope to be able to visit one day and see the auroras. Best regards, thanks very much for the encouraging words.

      el instrumento es un kantele, también tiene otros nombres en otros países, es un pequeño instrumento tipo salterio típico de países del norte. De hecho el kantele siempre se ha relacionado con lo femenino y el jouhikko o talharpa (esa especie de violín) con lo masculino. Sí, la historia es triste, pero se le sigue cantando así a los niños hoy en día.

      Depende, todo el canal tiene como hilo que une todo la fantasía pero en verdad cada cosa son géneros diferentes, esta en concreto es música folk europea, pero otras son canciones de fantasía, o new age, o celtas, o covers de bandas sonoras o incluso góticas... El canal no sólo es de música tradicional también es de mi música original como compositora y los géneros cambian dependen de la canción.

      Thank you, It features lots of acoustic instruments (mostly not shown on the video) like my dulcimer, hammered dulcimer, frame drum... but I kept the kantele and jouhikko on screen as they're both norse as the song. The song is a traditional but totally re-arranged in my mood, I love when a song has an interested back-story and I have a fascination for the spectral side. So I like to envision sometimes old lullabies and nursery rhymes, some get darker than this hahah This for example is Ring around the Rosie, probably one of the darkest videos in the channel th-cam.com/video/Feosp-ck4u8/w-d-xo.html Most of my music is fantasy folk and New Age but I have a ghostly side that flourish sometimes (lots of eerie whispering) and curiously those are the ones I enjoy the most (not people, maybe hahah)

  • @annatraustadottir4387
    @annatraustadottir4387 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The translation of the lyrics are not accurate. The second line does not mean Don't you worry about me, instead it means Don't you worry about that. Which makes more sense. The child ghost is telling it's mother not to worry about not having fine cloths to wear at the dance. That is what the mother is complaining about and thinking about. So the word "that" (því, in the lyrics), in the second line, is referring to her worries. So the translation would be My mother in the pen, pen/don't you worry about that, that/I will lend you my rag/My rag to dance in. Of course the ghost is referring to the rags that his mother wrapped it in when she left it to die. But not in the woods but rather somewhere in the hills/highlands.

      Thanks for the insight, sadly the subs are hardcoded in the video so I cannot change it, hope it does not deviate much from the vibe. A fellow native also pointed out in comments some details about the story so I welcome the corrections and I stand corrected. I tried my best to be accurate as I love folklore and as musician songs with a story, so it is done with utter respect so I sincerely apologise for inaccuracies in translation or pronunciation as non native Icelandic. Thanks for pointing it out, I will try to correct it at least from the srts, about the ones encoded in the video those sadly I cannot change now, hope it does not deter from appreciating the intention. Best regards

      I explore sometimes traditional folk songs, but as you know I have a weak spot for those who have an eerie side as it's a genre I also write. In fact there is a full playlist called "eerie lullabies" th-cam.com/play/PLfu7TASV8SHX7reeb8o_LtscRlH4ZqDlX.html but as you know I have dark songs that are not here. I'd not say this is scary but it's hopefully haunting.

    Icelandic and raised on the old stories. It was not the punishment but poverty and shame brought her to do it. She left it out in the cloth she used to wrap the child after birth, traditionally called dula. But after that nitpicking.... amazing work. I can see the old Goðs smile upon you. Could not imagine it sung better.

      Are you from Iceland? It honours me you think that way. I'm from Spain so it is done out of respect for old folklore. And thanks for pointing that out, I humbly stand corrected.Though I also make my own original music I also take inspiration in old legends and stories and I think precisely there are so much wisdom and knowledge behind it. I hope I did not mispronounce it. It was done with the heart in the right place.

      @@yidneth you actually had the old laws correct. But they were at that time and place not enforced due to poverty. The local goðs (chiefs) did not enforce the punisgment becouse there were enough problems. Just in the old story it is not said outright, but she was in love, got pregnant, but the unknown father left her. It is not said clearly, so this is absolutely no fault of yours.

    • @79Svenni

      @@yidneth actually... in the old stories they tell of a different story of Adam and Eve. They lived in paradise and had many children. One day God would come to visit. The children had been playing and were dirty, needed to be washed. Adam and Eve did not have enough time to wash all, so they hid the children that were still dirty. God of course knew, and asked them where their children were. They claimed that they hid no child from God. God then got angry and cursed Adam and Eve and the clean children that whatever they hid from the eyes of God would be hid from them. And as such they and all their descendants could not see, hear or touch those who were hidden or their descendants to this day. By those stories we still can not see or hear them except if they wish it. As they were not cast out of Paradise they still know the old ways traditions and magic. Capable of far more grace and beuty than any of us. You have shown them great competition in your art. You might rival Huldufolk (The hidden people.)

      @@danielhensley2597 I was born in that tiny Island "La Palma" in the Canary Islands which is underground the volcano eruption right now 💔 I live in North of Spain, so mossy and celtic. My heritage is a mixed bag lol I am extremely pale and blonde (I would love a healthy tan and less photosensitive eyes) and my family has current German and Dutch relatives. But I bear my surname "Hernández" as a great part of canary islanders, most have the same surname not because we were family but because it was imposed on its aboriginal population "guanches" (in my island benahoritas) who were a mystery for long time speculated, because we were found and conquered by Spain when Columbus stopped on our way to América, but they lived in caves and stone age with a language derived from berber (part blonde too due to nor european migration) and Old High German. Most very fair with blue or green eyes too so they have been a long time discussion. There are enigmas still, but I proudly bear my "super common" surname with pride as it was imposed on indigenous. They navigation skills, pagan belief and loving in caves with stone tools. Same old story upon conquest they were assimilated or turn into slaves and baptized all with Hernandez, my surname. So hopefully I carry part of that ancestry too because I do love and miss my homeland. And pray for my tiny island, 2 months already being destroyed by a volcano 🌋
