    You could water glass the chicken eggs. It’s a cute coop! Your chickens look great!

    That coop is too cute. I love it. Watch the dogs. They will kill, not for food but for the thrill. I have coons to battle. So many!

    So didn't have to use the backhoe for the dogs? They are really coming along.

    They are after grubs, ticks and other small bugs. I have combined hand loading and chickens. I am trying to train one of my chickens to clean up the loading bench of spilled powder and other stuff. Its beginning to work of sorts :) Just go to the last 5 minutes on my 223Rem video. Happy new year to you from east Tennessee.

    Pickled Eggs are amazing. Smoke some of the eggs and the smokey will stay with them. Also a thin slice, and I mean a slice, of habanero pepper can add some nice flavor/heat characteristics as well

      @@jrboutdoors7771 This was a very cool video. Thanks for sharing it with me. I really want a pickled egg now. If you are going to do that many eggs, I would definitely ask for some help.
      Canning/preserving is a very daunting task, especially if you have never done it before (for all I know you are a canning/pickling phenom and you know this already). I personally would water bath can them, but that is my personal OCD. Like they said if you use a brine that is that acidic, it shouldn't be an issue.
      I look forward to seeing what you come up with. I suggest you get the Ball Blue Book, or whatever they are calling it now, if you don't have one already. But I think some content would be an excellent addition onto your homesteading lifestyle.
      Cheers and Happy New Year.

    I’ve had several chicken through the years with gross butts that never go away. I’ve never decided what it’s from. Mine love dairy. But I don’t think I’ve ever let them just drink milk. I’ll mix it in oatmeal or grits or whatever
    I definitely wouldn’t leave milk out to become “outside temp” because That might make their digestion upset. Also- that “squatting” that they do is just normal, egg laying chicken behavior. They’ll do it wether they have a rooster or not.
    They would probably do fine with one rooster, but the squatting doesn’t mean they need one. A lot of flocks do fine without one. Don’t get more than one- if you do the girls will get over-bred and start losing back feathers and become fearful when the roosters are near. It will also decrease your egg numbers because of stress. Roosters are good protectors but they’re also sex machines. Also, if you want to work through a feeding system that doesn’t waste grain but they get maximum nutrients, look into how to ferment the layer feed you buy. They’ll eat all of it, zero waste. That feed you bought will last up to 4 or 5 months as long as you keep it dry…. I’d probably move it somewhere like the garage. I’ve always kept mine in metal trash cans.

    Hey man sorry for this not being chicken related but thought this would be my best bet to getting you to reply.. what’s your favorite cantilever mount for your scopes on AR’s ? I know you like the viper scopes but just curious what mount you use.. looking for a 30mm currently

    • @jrboutdoors7771
      @jrboutdoors7771  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't really know much about what's "good" in that market. My most expensive one is an Aadmount and my cheapest is an AR-Stoner. I've also used the Burris PEPR. I've never had an accuracy issue that I could reliably blame on any of them, so they've all worked the same for me.

    Just keep the extra feed someplace dry, it last a long time if it stays dry. I wouldn't want to leave the bag outside, rats, squirrels, ect will get attracted, and both eat eggs too.

    • @jrboutdoors7771
      @jrboutdoors7771  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've got some extra hardware cloth left over and I was thinking about building a place in my garage for feed storage. It would still see the outdoor temperature swings, though.

    We fire warning shots on the first attempt. I have lost more chickens to dogs than all the natural predators combined.

      It's a tough situation. People can be pretty dumb about their pets.
      If somebody had to shoot my cat because he was in their chickens, I hope I'd have the presence of mind to apologize and compensate them, then blame myself for letting the cat roam free. That's not how most people are going to react, though. Especially in the moment.
      I've thought all of this through over the last few months and it's why I spent the money on that insane run. I'll work with my neighbors over time, but having a safe place for them has taken a lot of the urgency and emotion out of it.
