My wife and I have our first flock of chickens totaling 5 now and love our birds. So enjoyable for us. I thought I could one day eat one or 2 of them for whatever reason. But NO WAY. These are my girls and I love them all..

Watched the main channel for years and love it. I watch when I can which isn't as quick or often as I would like. It's this channel that gets me to stop what I am doing, sit and watch.

Those young roosters sound cute crowing as they haven’t developed a mature sound yet.

I was wondering if you were going to do an update on the chickens!

I've now managed to watch all your chicken videos & they're great, thank you! I have barred rocks & I think they're a handful, even though I usually hear they're quite docile & sweet. They have their moments, but... I wouldn't say that's their default mode. Fortunately, I like them anyway! Will look forward to an update at some point, I hope all is well with you & yours.

The only reason i have ytube... jrb
Do it in the early morning and buy a large fish net for those free range. Plus i tried all the ways ehhh, best was sharp fishing knife i would flip them in those cones wait till they calm from all blood rushing to their heads than one slice and done. Also to shorten your proces get yardbird plucker soooo worth it i got 49 cornish to do in 2weeks.

Thanks for the update and for sharing your experiences. I’ll never own chickens (I’m too old now) but it’s been interesting watching you learn. I really enjoy your reloading videos but these chicken videos are a nice change. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

My wife bought a straight run of 10 Barred Rocks, and of course 6 of them are roosters. We’ve bought 6 pullets to replace them and 5 roosters will become Sunday dinner at 16 weeks about the first of September. Yes, Barred Rocks are crazy.

Thanks for the update. I love the chicken and pig updates. I also raise meat birds and egg birds. Be watching for that pig update. Hope to keep seeing more reloading stuff and livestock stuff.

Glad you had good luck out of the bunch.
You've certainly chosen a good looking pair. The added barred rock hens will help in spreading out some of the pressure as well. Which won't be a bad thing.
I wish there was more information out there about dealing with heritage breed chicken as well. I understand why people like the cornish crosses, but they really are just one type of chicken.

We always used a chicken catcher. Just a wooden handle on a long piece of heavy gauge wire with a tapered crook at the end. Very effective on penned chickens. Then used a short double ended ax to dispatch. Then scald and pluck and cut up.

I find it easier when I catch the roosters to be culled at night after dark put them in a crate, lot easier to grab them one at the time the next morning.

Suggested minimum of 8:1 hen to rooster. Below 8:1 and your hens may get over attended and even injured. He'll have his favorite girls who get more attention than the ones who play hard to get, but having more girls to chase helps keep him from focusing on the same hen and prevents injuring her.

My mother always hung her chickens by the feet from the clothesline. This accomplished two things, first the chicken calmed down and two the chicken bled out well without flopping all over the yard. Good luck with your future butchering

To dispatch a chicken use a pellet gun from a distance so the flock cannot see who did it. Then use cone decapitation for bleed out.

Any plans to try turkeys? We have had chickens for probably 12 years now, and just got 2 bourbon red turkeys this summer. Did ducks one year, and was amazed the number of duck eggs we got (less then chicken, but probably 3-4 eggs per week). Ducks where just messy, muddy,

I've never used the cone method, always used a hatchet and a wood stump or log. Not super clean, but pretty effective. I dont much like doing meat chickens, the work per pound of meat just seems out of balance.

  • @pandemicprecision4603

Man, rooster butchering is the worst. They're too lean and small cavity for gutting, at least for my hands to clean out. I've done the cone & cut route and didn't have much a problem with them flopping or freaking out. You just gotta get their head way down out the bottom of that cone.

I haven't tried this myself, but I saw a video ( th-cam.com/video/vu90LaIdrQQ/w-d-xo.html ) where the broomstick method was used. It's another option. You could pick them off the roost at night and dispatch right outside the door. A bit of flapping and it's over.

  • @AKlover
    @AKlover 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Get A broom handle and use it to decap. Just deliberately follow through. Putting them down extremely quickly is as much for your benefit as it is the chicken. Don't let them linger and don't get squeamish and screw it up.

Catch them before they come off the roost early in the morning then put them in a cage. All your birds will be in the cage ready for processing after breakfast.I prefer to use the broomstick method to cull birds.I never let the flock see me kill any of their flock members.Chasing them can cause the meat to have a nasty taste. It also causes injuries & bruising.
