  • This is an update on the chicks' growth and how things are going so far. The smallest lavender orpington has a weird yawn, but otherwise things are going great.

I always put the water container up on a wood block or something to keep them from getting the wood chips in it.

Ya dude she will be fine. Pecking order is real. Maybe take it easy on all the treats until they are a little older. You dont have to worry about them scratching their food around they will nock it out and scratch either way. Once they get big enough to party outside remember how cute they were with their legs out like that because you will swear they are dead lying in the yard like that.

We always run chick starter, till they get some size, then layer pellets, just cause they run well through the feeder. We don't really add scratch feed, but there's not really harm in it. We used to use normal chick starter, and use the antibiotics in the water, but its gotten hard/impossible to get the antibiotics now, so we run medicated feed now for chicks.

Wood chips and chicken manure makes a great base for compost if you do any gardening.

Do they make silencers for chickens? That noise would drive me nuts.

If you bought the chicks from the feed store they didn’t come vaccinated. Since that’s the case, when we buy feed store chicks, we do always feed medicated feed for the first 6-12 weeks. Coccidiosis is a yeast infection sort of thing. There’s no antibiotic or hormone in the feed. If you buy vaccinated chicks you don’t feed medicated crumble. We feed and water outside only…. Always have. And we do deep bedding method, too. I clean once in summer and once in winter. That’s it. Works for us, but we live in the panhandle of Texas, so our humidity might not be as high as yours in (Kentucky?) I don’t ever start feeding any treats until 6 weeks old. Nothing but plain chick starter from day 1 to 6 weeks old. Everybody does that differently though. Scratching is natural instinct for chickens. Don’t worry about it. Even if they don’t find anything to eat, they’ll do it compulsively anyway. Scratch is fine for a treat. But don’t feed them much. Don’t worry about those feeders being “too clean” lol…. By the time they get much bigger, they’ll be dumping that feed out of there in no time. We built a feeder where their heads have to go down into an individual hole, all the way up to their shoulders. So they can’t sort through it and find stuff they want- they just have to go in the hole and eat. They learn. And now that’s all they know.

I can tell you're enjoying this little farts.
Good on the electrolytes and pro-biotics. We've not done much with giving ours grit, but ours are out in a run at a young age.
The deuce she dropped looked a little red to me. That may be an indicator of an infection of some kind. You may want to look for bloody stool in with the rest of them. A change in bedding is always a good start since they poo where they eat. If you're looking to medicate them, we use Corid with pretty good results. We sometimes put some apple cider vinegar in the water too.
    Yogurt = Probiotics
Bedding doesn't compost well if it's the pine variety.
We keep ours with a heat lamp until they're fully feathered out.
We use a chain to hang our feeder mostly for weight and it was available.
Scratch is more a treat than food.
If you ever decide to get ducks, DONT DO THE MEDICATED FOOD. It'll poison ducks.
I've also been told NOT to get the fine shaving stuff. My better half told me a year ago and I honestly can't remember why. It may have had something to do with our ducks though.

@@jrboutdoors7771 asked her why No on the fine shavings, she said it was to keep them from eating it. Also, NO Cedar for birds. It's bad for them. It's supposedly toxic to them. I've no evidence other than hear say from the interwebs.

I would be careful with those vitamins. I think you could go from 0 to body builder pretty quick, and that's the last thing a baby needs.
That big ol' dump was probably what the doctor ordered. That's usually part of my morning routine that says "This going to be a good day"!
Make a cone out of constuction paper and tape it to the top of the little water tank. that way they can't land on it.
No round roost's. They're used to jumping up on branches. Make them multi-level and at an angle, so they don't shit on each other.
