  • Slow progress on the coop is about flexibility as my plan comes together. Right now I'm rethinking everything.

I don't know how you do it? I would have been so anxious to grab that 357 when you found that snake, and try out those shot loads. I probably would have grabbed each one of those chickens and threw them back in that chicken house.
Do dit do dee do.....KABLAM!! "Hey buddy you ain't got no head"!

I don't like killing snakes either but one that big would call for snake shot. My grandfather hated snakes and I witnessed him shooting one with a .308 from 20ft. The snake ended up flying into a pecan tree 30ft away. I was a kid and thought it was great. Granddads are always fun.

The farm I spent my summers at had chickens in the yard and they never strayed too far and never got too much attention except for feed . The eggs they produced had a yoke that was almost orange from a corn diet and they sure tasted great.

Seeing the snake brought me back to my days as a farm boy. I recall leaning on a post & watching a dozen or so of our Leghorn hens gang up on a snake in the barnyard. They would kill & eat the smaller garter snakes & young bull snakes; the adult snakes would usually slither away to safety after being pecked 2 or 300 times. LOL Those old hens would gang up on our barn cats as well. None of 'em wanted to face a bunch of PO'd hens. 🙂

We’ve got chickens on the farm let out in the morning and they pretty well put themselves up at night. They never stray too far away, not more that 300yds from coop. And they have their usual spots like bushes they like to hang out in around the barn. And they also venture out in the cow pastures

I’ll tell ya, they don’t want to be fox dinner either bud. They do a pretty fair job of keeping an eye out for themselves and their buddies. Mine have pretty flat and open area so they can’t really get snuck up on as easy though. Grendel looked like he was about get revenge on that one that scared him!

i had my chickens do 'free range' in the yard. up until raccoons started coming for them. at one point one of the chickens was taken in broad daylight in the middle of my front yard next to the busy road. i don't think that was a raccoon though. not sure what it was but all i found was a few feathers ad the place of an attack and then rest of them in the reeds of a swampy area 150-200 feet further to the back of the property. I had automatic 'chicken door' on the timer rigged up from cheap amazon components once i forgot one time to lock them in. they come back into the coop themselves very regularly almost like a clock. so i figured i was good until raccoon started showing up in droves. i had setup a trail cam pointing at the coop and on some nights i've seen as many as three different ones trying to get into the coop. had to come up with more secure coop-door latch - the one raccoon can't open. being right up against the forest it's only a matter of time until some predators figure out there is free food roaming around. protect your chickens, man!

Once we started collecting eggs some of our hens quite laying in the coup and hid their nests out in yards and would not come home at night. Then the skunks or racoons got the hens.

The snake is probably eating mice and rats (assuming you’re not missing eggs in a couple months)

Ya dude free range chickens are awesome. But you will still need a secure “run” that you can keep them in at times. Once they approach laying age you will want to be able to keep them penned up. Also a safe place outdoors for when the inevitable predator lockdown comes. My girls are in lockdown at the moment from a fox scare. Luckily my dog ran the foxes off that afternoon but they were back on trail cam at 5:24 the next morning. Trail cam on outside of coop never hurt. Lets you know where the raccoons are trying to get cute.

This!! It’s true. You’ll want a run even if you only use it for going out of town, or for bad weather. If a downpour comes, you’ll want to have a place roofed where they can come out onto dry dirt. Also for in winter when the snow is falling. They won’t walk on it.

We dedicated one of our security cameras to chicken duty. If I wake up in tje night to go to the restroom, i'll turn on the monitor for a few seconds. My coop is a steel dog kennel that would take some SERIOUS digging to get into, so I always catch them in the snooping around phase. I've laid many a predator in the shade at 2 or 3 a.m.
Our birds free range every single day from morning till dark. We lose a few, but we have enough go broody every year and the occasional "oh i want some of those" at rural king that our numbers grow instead of drop. We give away adults to friends and neighbors all the time. If you dedicate some time to predator hunting you'll stay on top of it. If ya notice a bird missing, set up a live trap with an egg and a few kernels of cat food outside of the coop. Its easy, and it works very very well. They usually decimate the eggs before they go for meat, so there will be clues.
