  • My Barred Rock rooster chicks have arrived! I'll be growing them out as meat birds, but keeping one or two to join the egg laying flock as permanent residents.

    My first thought in the beginning was that they look like Velociraptors. :D

      I'm going to try my best to handle them as much as possible, hopefully there will be at least a few that want to be friendly. We've got a large sample size!

    Chip looks like a Rhode Island Red chick. They make minerals to add to the water that helps with the poopies and also keeps them from plucking feathers. I use to put some cedar limbs in my chicken house that kept the mites away, I'm guessing cedar chips would work too but never tried that.

    • @jrboutdoors7771
      @jrboutdoors7771  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He doesn't look like my Rhode Island Reds from last year, but maybe that's because he's a rooster. The white spots on the body are different as well.
      I don't know! It will be a lot of fun to guess as he grows up.
      I forgot to mention it in the video...I also gave them a round of the electrolyte and probiotic packets in their water. I will probably do that again.
      It's been almost two weeks, so hopefully it was an isolated problem. The chick went so wild and acted so strange, it might have been something neurological.

    Still waiting on the unveiling of your tractor ... But the chickens are doing pretty good by the looks of things. That rooster looks like ours did when he was small. You can see a clip of him in my garden update video if you want to know what that one may look like when he grows up a bit.

    have you tried putting vinegar in there water? it helps with nervousness and is just all around healthy for them. just put it in there water for about a week see if you notice a difference it also might help with that issue your having with them. My father raised chickens all his life and he always put a little bit of apple cider vinegar in the chicks water. try it its not that expensive to do. also check the temperature of the brooder it could be to hot or cold can also cause this, and last always use a good organic starter feed for the chicks something that is easy to digest if the feed is to poor it can cause a sticky substance when the chickens digest the feed and cause paste butt. try these three stated above an keep brooder clean. and you should not have any more issues with that problem.

    I won't entertain having chickens without a rooster. As long as it's not mean. They give too many benefits to the flock not to have one.

    I have 2 bantam hens that both went broody but the eggs all went bad. So I brought some chick's into my maternity ward in my bantam/quail greenhouse and they have adopted all 90 chick's I purchased. I have atleast 9 different varieties too....any time I bring in new chick's if those babies chirp to loud the bantam moms will run over to see who I'm hurting and the white bantam will eventually attack me...I had 4 baby quail in there also and the bantams did not take to kindly to them 😢
    Chip looks like he might be a beilefelder rooster..I have alot of them I just purchased from a hatchery and mines looks similar to chip.

    Meyer hatchery comes out of Ohio, which is close to you, right? Their order minimum is 3 starting April 1 and they give 1 free one, too. My current batch of chicks is also battling pasty butt! I’ve never had a problem with it like I have this year. How strange

    • @jrboutdoors7771
      @jrboutdoors7771  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are up near Cleveland. Too far to drive, but maybe close enough to get the chicks overnight. I might try them next time.
      I think on the next batch of chicks I order or hatch, I'm just going to smear all of their butts with vaseline from the start. I'm sick of dealing with this crap!

      @@jrboutdoors7771 I got my Meyer Hatchery chicks Wednesday morning at 10:30 AM, after they’d hatched on Tuesday morning. About 24 or so hours total. They flew next day air. And I’m in Texas. So I bet you’d get yours just as quick, being much closer than I am. I’ve ordered from Meyer 2 other times besides this one, not to mention bought feed store chicks (most of them come bulk from Hoover hatchery) AND ordered once from My Pet Chicken- NEVER had pasty butt, ever. But this year- we’re struggling. They’re 10 days old and we’re still having problems with a couple.

    • @jrboutdoors7771
      @jrboutdoors7771  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They are Govee brand that I got on Amazon. I bought them to put in powder canisters for monitoring humidity, but I've found myself using them in a bunch of other ways.
      The ones you saw in this video are the mini version. They will fit into any powder can. amzn.to/3uBxhqN (affiliate link)
      The first ones I bought were the regular version and they're too big to fit in Alliant and VihtaVuori cans. They have more bluetooth range, though. amzn.to/3uE8v9n

      About 12 acres but most is steep hillside. Probably about 2-4 usable acres down near the house.
