Your ability to explain how to measure for your proportions was a real education for someone like me who is trying to learn at 70. I especially liked the beginning where a shadow portrait is made to give you a start. I keep watching and learning.
I don't think it's confidence, it's the ability to keep going and be 'about right' consistently without considering any stroke to be decisive, then all these 'about right' reinforce each other. It's never to consider that any stroke is critical but placing it reasonably well. The mind is constantly absorbing from the original and transferring to paper. What happens on paper, happens and can be adjusted.
I'm kinda late to the table with my comments, but I just wanted to say that I had abandoned charcoal because of the mess, but you have "invited" me to return to this medium and try again. This drawing is lovely and your technique amazing. I'm used to watching you do watercolors. It's nice to see you have complete control of drawing techniques too. By the way, you are a great teacher.
Oh my thank you so much for the stick idea to measure! I have been using my pencil but it was never accurate enough bc of the shape of the ends. Great video.
