    So amazing. I can draw a line between 2 points without a ruler, but it ends there. There is such a parallel between this charcoal method and the experiences of life... you think you had a dark experience, and with a little time and perspective the deepness of it can be altered and positioned such that it becomes an attribute...

    That is s fantastic method. I have never done it that way; shading in an outline instead of a very light pencil sketch. I've always shaded last as I bring in the details. I can't wait to try it. It makes it easier for me to see the direction I need to go in order to bring it to life. A pre-sketch makes me feel like I need to follow it...Like coloring inside the lines(if that makes sense). Art is beautiful.

    out of all the mediums in drawing portraits. charcoal is the most fun to watch unfolding. others like colour pencil starts unfolding at some areas slowly but in charcoal it unfolds as a whole.

  • @vincentaurelius2390
    @vincentaurelius2390 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I prefer a more expressive, rough charcoal texture over the end result here. It's amazing how close the drawing is to a photograph; the only problem I have with hyperrealism is that the hand of the artist disappears as he is simply copying reality, not interpreting it.

    • @modelnaturephotography
      @modelnaturephotography ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe the interpretation of reality is a very real one. I completely understand the point you make, I look at charcoal portraits as much about negating interpretation of reality as I do interpreting reality, whatever that is.

    • @steveharris1974
      @steveharris1974 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hyperrealism is when you struggle to tell the difference between the drawing and a photo of the subject that has been drawn, you will never see a hyperrealist start a drawing like this one. This is not hyperrealism, it's just an artist who completely understands the fundamentals of portraiture, therefore allowing him/her to be as abstract or exacting as they wish.

      Nyigam Bole I’ve recently been practicing with charcoal, before I mostly used graphite. After watching many videos, the tips that helped me most was using softer charcoal and loading the blending stump to draw and when I needed to erase gently erase to preserve the integrity of the paper I use. Use light pressure and the charcoal can be removed easier. It worked for me. I hope it works for you too and I hope you don’t mind a somewhat inexperienced artist jumping in on your question. I just noticed no one had responded to your question. Best regards.

      Lift dark areas by dabbing with a kneaded gum eraser and work in lighter tones on the dark areas with white chalk. Sometimes the white chalk won't work well over a thicker black layer but you can use a spray fixative to spray down the drawing and let it dry and then the white will go over those areas better

      Drawing is based on skill. Always remember that you ARE capable. You just have to put in the work. Those who make the most mistakes end up being the most skilled.

    Hey man, what are your tips for a person to start sketching? (first time)

    • @ThePortraitArt
      @ThePortraitArt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      to be honest it really helps to have a teacher to walk you through something. But if you must start on your own, just start.. start some where. I have some real time videos for free in my channel and you just have to dive in and figure out which direction you want to improve toward first.

    GREAT charcoal portrait, but title is misleading :(

      Was thinking that myself. It offers absolutely NO INFORMATION about the medium at all, just showed her skills at a fast speed and advertised her patreon. So...Is the reason we should use it because she just happens to be good at it? She showcased her skill but gave no help to anyone needing information, which would likely put anyone off. Basically it felt more like “look how great I am, give me money”. Adverts for website, patreon, no info. More or less made me not want to subscribe, watch anything else and definitely not donate. If you offer info, give it, don’t click bait. The title should be “speed drawing in charcoal “.

      @@JadeLeaf1980 A list of materials used for this drawing would have been nice, and explanation of WHY anyone should use charcoal. How does a person protect that type of art.Won't it just get smudged again?

    How can someone be this good handling charcoal?! Charcoal drawing is like reversed engineering or something the way I see it. You couldn't know how it will look until the very end. I can only do line art and it never cease to amaze me seing people so good at shading.
