8:25 you can tell how skilled he is, by simply seeing how much he is able to demonstrate. Drawing takes more of an internal feeling to get right. Most don't even know what they are doing. Yet he is able to illustrate how he is thinking, and that is a very powerful skill.
Youre doing a great job of converting your thought process into words. It's not an easy thing to do especially while you are drawing/painting at the same time.
I like how you talk about those principles (values + proportion, build those first then refine), instead of simply saying here's step 1 and then step 2. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I'm an older senior. I've done some sculpture and some writing but never any painting, drawing, or charcoal. One afternoon, not long ago, I was watching a young woman in the park encouraging something out of a piece of paper with a chunk of charcoal. I watched and watched this cloud of gray, black and white....chaos, chaos, chaos and all of a sudden... a beautiful face.So far....pretty terrible. I wont quit though...even though you and that young lady make it look unobtainablely simple. Wonderful work. I'll keep watching, listening, and trying to learn. thank you.
One way to explain about the shadow detail is, You want to have a refined focal point so your drawing or painting reads like the natural human gaze. The viewer can only focus on one area for detail. That is natural observation. So you are trying to mimic the natural way the human eyes see. That is why you create a focal point in your work. The lost information gives them something to mentally engage with. Great job! Love your channel.
You’re a fabulous teacher and of course an amazing artist. I’ve learned so much about working with charcoal from your videos. This is Excellent from start to finish
Otherwise… ? I’m not sure why so many TH-cam artists do this. Most everything they say is meaningless. A waste of what I’m sure would have been a useful tutorial. Frustrating.
freeze the video where he shows the reference > screen capture it > arrange the window displaying the youtube video and the screencapture so that they both sit nicely on your monitor. In a nuthsell: God helps those who help themselves.
Definitely not bad at explaining... the best thing you do throughout your entire videos is continuously talk .. you are constantly giving inside tips and tricks in your explanation of theory and perspective
I would reccomend your demos to students as well as artist friends. Your drawings are poetic, atmospheric and simply beautiful. I'm wondering if you maintain those qualities in your paintings.
Wonderful looking over your shoulder as you provide this generous insight into your creative process. It really is a great privilege to see the image emerge from the paper. Thank you.
I just found your channel and subscribed. I really like how you emphasize establishing similar values on different parts of the face and detailing the areas where the light hits. Your technique and work is amazing!
You explain very well actually. So inspiring! I’m so in love with your work. And panpastel was just the thing I was looking after all. Im so glad I found this.
Love this video and thank you! I have been trying this and having so much fun with it! Sometimes it is successful and other times not, but I am learning!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, I am always loving your charcoal drawing and currently I am improving my drawing skills because of your tutorial, thanks a lot 💕
Hello Mr charcoal, you are the best one to transmit the good way to progress ...do thanks you so much for that 🙏👣🐾👣🐾...and it s Aldo famous to pratcice english... So would you like to try Mona Lisa...? 😮😊...nice day between France Pyrénées 😉
Thanks for your lovely work, detailed and simple explanation, in total contrast to listening to the so many anoying noises you've also shared with us! Please put a glass of water nearby to clear your throat, or edit the noises after finishing the video. Thanks again for your kind and generoud tutoial. All the best.
Great tutorial! I’d like to suggest if you can show the reference on camera while you’re drawing... I don’t know how to explain but this helps to understand what you’re doing not just watch the process
Really great demo. I’ve been dabbling a bit myself recently (though I’ll do anything to avoid working with messy stuff like charcoal). Have ordered some pan pastel and a soft palette knife to experiment with - it looks like a fun tool to use. Keep up the good work!
That's the portait of Psarantonis! He is the brother of famous Nikos Xilouris, both Cretan musicians. He comes from Crete Island of Greece. I live there too. If you didn't try to make the portait of Psarantonis, then the similaritiy is more than a simple coincidence!
Thanks for the interesting charcoal tutorial and how you used the pan pastel and soft palet knife. Up until now I've been using charcoal dust and make-up brushes/blenders.
I hope you know whose portrait you've made here..! He is Psarantonis a great musician from the island of Crete in Greece! Search for his music in youtube...
We ( I ) really do need to be able to see your photo reference as you draw. That way, we can get an idea of why you make the marks you make. Of course, that would mean training your camera lens on your paper so we can see it just as you see it. Otherwise,it is a demonstration but not really a 'tutorial'.

"Eventually the more you work on your drawing, the more they'll disappear. Just you don't have to worry too much about being too neat with them."
I'm recommending your channel to my art group. You've transformed my drawing skills. Can't thank you enough. Love from England.

Das ist das beste Video, mit dem besten Resultat was ich je zum Thema Holzkohle gesehen habe!!! Phänomenal !!!
Du bist ein wahrer Künstler !! ❤❤
I think it would be helpful to have a small image of your reference drawing in one of the corners of the video
This would be BEYOND helpful w getting started
or maybe not cutting ahead randomly and saying “ive pushed the values a little further now” lol
I do recommend

Great tutorial! Going to grap my Pan Pastel and give it a go.
Could you make a video about your reference points that you use, like how you used the eye to find where to put the mouth?
He is try to show the structure not to show in detail the eye or the mouth likeness. I like this kind rough drawing because it’s artistic!
You just simply incredible.

Great vid - thank you! It would be awesome if you can share how you drew the beard. Did you use the kneaded eraser for the “white hair”?
Hello master

Hi love the video! I am getting into charcoal portraits and was wondering what easel you are using. I would really like to know!
Learning loads about value..🤜🤛
I bought black panpastel about 6 months ago. Finally got around to trying it yesterday & was an epic fail! Lol! Gonna keep trying...
you are absolutely cracked
Does the black Pan Pastel lift as well as willow charcoal?
great great. thanks for sharing this video tutorial.
You inspired me man
Amazing
Can we use charcoal powder instead of pan pastel?
I like your flair. How do you fix and prepare a piece before shipping ?
Your creations are beautiful!
Question
Do you spray them to keep them set?
I hope you know whose portrait you've made here..! He is Psarantonis a great musician from the island of Crete in Greece!
Search for his music in youtube...
2023.. your my favourite.
what's your favorite paper for charcoal?
I like the pic. A lot of the pics you see on online tutorials are so bland. As the man said, I think you have at least a trace of talent!
Does it matters for what type of paper do we use?
This guy closely reminds me of Psarantonis,a Greek singer,is that him?
What kind of knife are you using for shading
Is it black pan pastel ?
please send me the name of this knife i need this charcoal to work please send us the name of this spetula or give us the amazon link thank you
What kind of paper do u use?
Kindly draw beautiful and joyful faces too.
