I’m within my 5 year window of retirement and am greatly looking forward to the day when I can wake up every morning, have a leisurely breakfast, head to the park for my exercise, and then head out to the garage to spend the rest of the day happily tinkering on old cars!
I will have been with the same company for 25 years this coming summer and have always thought I would give them a 6-12 month notice so they would have ample time to hire and train my replacement. However, in the span of a few years, the current management team has taken what was always a rewarding and fulfilling career and turned it into a soul-sucking exercise in corporate survival. I went from a situation where I truly enjoyed my work and was actually excited to come back into the office on most Monday mornings to get back after things, to the point where I now spend most of my day trying to stay under the radar and dreaming of the time when I no longer have to be here!
At this point, when it comes my time to retire, my plan is to simply keep it under wraps and call up my boss one day out of the blue and let her know my ass is going out of here in exactly two weeks!

@@RetirementSOS - Thanks - I’m “stacking cash” to give me some options as I get closer to D-Day! A couple of years worth of living expenses in cash gives you some options if you decide you can’t grit your teeth and fake it any longer…….😂

announce retirement? Did everyone do it this way? I started a 3 week vacation from a soul sucking job run by sadistic management. 1 week into the vacation I called HR and set up my retirement. Never came back from my vacation. Mailed letter to the office saying my ID was in my locker and gave my retirement day via that letter.

You're under no obligation to give more than 2 weeks notice. I was in a good situation and chose to to give my company 3 months.
Your work environment didn't sound very good so I understand why you submitted your notice and didn't return. Thanks for your comment!

How strange that I bumped into your video on this topic today. My husband is retiring at the end of this month (just 12 more days). However, because next week is a holiday week in the U.S., tomorrow and Monday will really be his final two days of work. After planning, saving and talking about retirement for years, especially in the past few months, it really seems 'surreal' that this is truly the end of his career spanning the past 47 years. It really is turning the page of a whole new season of life! Like you, he has really enjoyed his job and the people he works with, so he'll miss it and yet, on the other hand, he is looking forward to his new found freedom. And I'm thinking about how strange it will be to have him home all day, every day. It all makes you very reflective on life itself - past, present and future! Lots to think about, reminisce about, and look forward to! Good luck in your retirement and we'll be keeping an eye on your channel in the coming days!

My base home will be the USA, where I was born, educated, and earned my income. I have moved to beautiful, safe, and clean Queretaro, Mexico on 11-2-2021,for safety, and a less expensive cost of living. I will always love the USA, but my life was not safe there, and my pension could not take the excessive increases in rent, utilities etc. I love Acapulco, but not the earthquakes, which i was in 6 and one hurricane from 1962-2013.

If you can do it financially,,,do it.. I did it at 46 and so did my wife..Best move we ever made..got involved with things we love,,realestate,,,antique store,,rentals,,and much volunteer work.. The key was living below our means,,no debt and good investments.and a great golden parachute retirement plan for early retirees.. .33 years later and no regrets..

Even though this vid is a year old it popped up likely from the google search algorithm. I’m about 1-2 yrs out from retirement. I’ve struggled with the difference between retiring and quitting. Not planning on any big advance notice. Maybe 2weeks at most. So it will be more like quitting than retiring. And I’m going to do it as quietly as possible. I don’t want any co workers to know I’m leaving until after I’m gone. Some have done this during a vacation.

    • @RetirementSOS

Your plan to retire quietly, quickly and without fanfare in a couple of years is quite common. Giving 3 months notice gave me time to digest the whole process of retiring. In the end I was ready and accepting. Thanks for your comment!

I announced mine 6 months ahead of time. My boss was very mad... Apparently it messed up his plans. Days/Weeks later I thought I was going to get Laid Off. My Yearly Review was not long after... He told me I was safe... Everyone at work new that Health Insurance was important to me. So he assured me I was good until I make 65 to start Medicare. So I am retiring in 06/2022. I started your video's from the beginning to see if anything you experienced will be good for me. I have no Debt... With Covid for the past 2 years, my home has been totally remodeled. I do have some Dental work coming up... You can tell from my comments I have viewed some of your latest videos. Take Care...

I was always told that you never give your employer more notice than you have to. THey could have fired you, and that is why they say never give anymore than the amount of vacation time that you have. If you have four weeks vaca per yr, that is how much notice you should give them, to be safe.
You were lucky, to still be there. Congrats on your retirement.

Well what a coincidence, I just did the same thing today during our 1:1. It was much less formal as we're all working remote. I'm giving them at least a month's notice (there's not a lot of domain knowledge to transfer) but I'm willing to stay a bit longer if needed. The date I picked isn't set in stone.

Thats great but not everyone loves their job and gets treated great at their job, The only reward I ever get for doing a good job was more work while others around me get to take it easy and make the same money as me. So they are lucky I'm giving them any notice at all. Working for the same company for 35 years, with a bunch of backstabbers, driving a forklift my back is destroyed and for what, they will replace me in five minutes.

I retired in 2005 after 35 years of drudgery in a cubicle farm at Mega-Corp. At age 55, when I walked out of there for the last day, I felt like a man getting out of prison. Every day since has been a blessing for not having to go into that dreadful place.

There will be trial and error at the beginning, but that's normal. The first Monday morning of being retired is Euphoric! Happy you'll be playing Pickle Ball. Not exercising was my biggest downfall when I retired and I gained 10 lbs in 6 months. That's all been corrected. Enjoy your last 2 months of work. Congrats!
