I am from India and retired voluntarily 8 years before my scheduled date of retirement. Since then I have been travelling a lot both nationally and internationally and have taken up my childhood hobby of knitting and embroidery. Most of these items I gift to my friends and family on festive occasions. It gives me great pleasure to see them using my gifts.

I retired 6 years ago from working 3 days a week with special needs adults. Soon after I retired I was volunteering at an independent senior living run by the Baptist Church. But stopped when my granddaughter arrived early last year. I enjoy “Nana” shifts 3- 4 times/week. She is now 18 months old and is definitely a God-send. I walk 60-90 mins 3 times/week followed by 10 mins of stretching. I host a weekly one hour prayer meeting on Wednesdays using Zoom. I facilitate a 6-semester discipleship training program, on Saturday mornings, also via Zoom. This September our seniors’ friendly Mah-Jong Club is resuming with Public Health protocols in place. The main criteria is that you must be fully vaxxed to participate. I am so excited as it’s my favourite game next to playing Scrabble online via “Word with Friends”. I am enjoying my retirement. It’s the next best thing to being “Nana”!

I retired just 2 days ago! Right now I’m just marveling at how surreal this time of life feels to me.
Next week I’m going to establish some “flexible routines” for the days, weeks, months and years ahead. The first few months I wan to catch up on housework, small projects, phone calls to relatives, and spending time with my kids and grandchildren. After-which, I want to focus on some bigger projects.

I love this video and especially when you mentioned about people complain about the cost of traveling. Having a travel state of mind really helps. You will not believe how cheap it is to travel until you find some very fascinating place to travel to and pay next to nothing but allows you to have the experience of your life. I made lots of videos about cheap countries you can travel to and spend about $50 a day(I know, I was stunned too) Also, I interviewed this couple who left their jobs to travel for a year and they discovered that traveling for a year a=to about 30 countries was worth the same about of money they spent in their home country, Canada. I hope that motivates you to start traveling.

I’m officially eligible to retire this year and I’m surprised to find I’m not as keen as I thought I would be. All through my 40s I fantasized about retiring and having the time to do all the cool things you mentioned. I have a ton of crafty hobbies, so I imagined unlimited time in my sewing room. My fear now though is that without someone depending on me to show up I might be very lazy and then slip into depression. I think I’ll need to plan out a schedule for myself so I’ll have a reason to get out of bed. Isn’t life funny?

I had an insight when I was 46: I was riding on the bus and crocheting rather than driving in the commute when I began to notice many older ladies knitting on the bus. Then I realized that these were people that because of their lifestyle, had lived to a great age. Then I began going places that had a high senior attendance, and began to enjoy seniors as friends, I realized that if older people are in attendance, they grew old with the venues, and that venue must be a good path to "get on the bus" to becoming a successful and fun loving senior.

Excellent suggestions. When I was a child my grandmother wrote her funeral. She already had a will. Every year she reviewed both documents and made changes if she wished though she rarely changed her will. Everyone knew where she kept her funeral plan. She also pre-paid her funeral including a casket spray. Years before she died she parceled out her most precious belongings as she wanted to see family enjoy those things while she lived. Now, my mother is doing the same thing.

Since I retired. I bake once a week, never took time to do this before I retired. I also play my keyboard which I bought a year before I retired. I also play a guitar that was given to me for safekeeping then just given to me as my friend didn't want it back...it sometimes pays to do a friend a favor! I hope to audit classes when I'm 65 bc the cost is only $100 per class. I have a load of mending waiting for me. Two days a week I drive my friend to her physio appointments and catch up on the news or music theory while I wait for her. I drive her car. If you have your own car you drive children..orphans or others, to their doctor's appointments...my married cousins did this together. Beautiful. Write a book of your life experiences. I have written two while working full time. I plan to write minimum one more while I'm retired. I also looked forward to playing my violin and viola again, which I bought before I retired, as i anticipated that day for a couple years.

How nice to hear you mention the beautiful town of Bamberg, Germany. I live nearby and can recommend a visit.
More opportunities to fill your days? How about being an au-pair granny? Read (your own stories) to children at kindergarten or in hospitals. Go and sell things at flea markets. If you like gardening and you don't have one yourself, ask neighbours who possibly are no longer able to do the garden work. Helping out in the neighbourhood - you can easily find out where help is needed (walk the dog, go for a walk with a baby in a pram, run errands for those who can't walk properly ...) Cheers

This is such an interesting topic. I am still working, but get a lot of time off, so in preparation, we are traveling to some of the remotest parts of the earth in search of the most beautiful animals. We know this kind of travel is hard, and it will be harder to do as my husband and I get older, so we are doing it now while we still work. Frankly, I am not looking forward to retirement as I still really enjoy the discipline of working. I also think that you have to really motivate yourself when you are retired as no one is telling you what to do (which is the reason why so many people want to retire). One topic I would like you to discuss is creating a legacy. Thank you!

Junior colleges and Universities usually have a little newspaper like flyer that offer "Informal classes". They
can be free or if you are making something you buy your supplies. I took a French Class from one of these
and paid some small fee like $32. Then I took one for soy candle making. It was a lot of fun and I paid only
for my wax. Don't forget you can start a supper club for once every 5 weeks. Limited it to 4 couples or 8 people. People have to sign up by a certain time and when it is full it is full. If a person doesn't want to come
the next time that is ok. Thanks for this episode, Margaret.

sometimes I combine activities that get enhanced when I do so. for instance, a plan to travel either solo or with a small group to a place with a focus for the journey: either a meditative journey to a particular place e.g. a monastery, ashram or retreat or a journey to a place with a lot of history. Spirituality and travel go together. Or combining painting with listening to music, or cooking and listening to programs like yours, or talking with friends and doodling, or spending time reading to my elderly father who has very weak eyesight, while relaxing in a warm blanket....one is not multitasking, but enhancing the pleasure of each of these activities.

I joined the womens' billiard league, age does not matter in billiards, people can learn and get better at any age, and the indoor sport is has a very sexy and racy image.... my top competitors are over eighty, and our team includes grandmothers and new mothers, and young unmarried competitors. Much easier than bowling... I invested in my table at home ,and find it a very good light exercise and mind sharpening game. My home is very exciting with the pool table and decor.

I think my (good) problem is that I have too MANY things I want to do. I will retire from teaching full time 6-19 but will continue teaching karate and want to have @10 private piano students
My great love is composing so I will finally have big blocks of time
My other interests are ballet. French, I want to learn quilting by hand, also would like to volunteer for a pro-life organization and suicide prevention and...travel! The future looks very bright - I'm enjoying dreaming about it

Dear Sixty and Me (Margaret Manning). How about doing something productive to help the younger generations cope with life?I am always fascinated to see and hear about the luxuries and comforts that older retired people do and boast about, and the recommendations you make about how to waste the rest of your life . When I learn about declining birth rates, young people committing suicide because of depression and hopelessness. Here in Britain the government (politicians) have not executed the wishes of the BREXIT referendum, and I wonder why the older generation are not protesting against the defiance/betrayal of elected humans. If you are wondering why young people are not fighting for their future (that is fighting against politicians who commit crimes against their constituents by disobeying their democratic instructions) you may consider that they are working to pay tax (state pension) and raise families. I am not young and I see how younger people are being deskilled. A smart phone can't kiss or hug anyone, plant or cultivate anything, pick you up if you fall, but everyone is told to get computer skills and learn to code programs and how humanity is evolving (into uselessness). WTF are you doing about it?

When I was in high school I had a job reading to a blind man who was going to college. I learned a lot as well as earned some money as well.I read slow and deliberately and it worked out just fine.
