The problem with the bracket method on the toilet is that it the metal bracket bends out of shape placing strain on the backing nut making that joint weak too Most of the toilets in the uk has this crap design but I have installed quite a few in recent years with the bolts directly fixed through the cistern ( tank ) which are less problematic
Your doing a wonderful job Steven.. Your an wonderful human being.. Your presence is very much appreciated.. Sending positive thoughts, gratitude and love to you and all 💐🤗💞🙏
@@BLS2134 Me too. They are a pain in the ass to unclog, have a poor bowl rinse, have a poorly designed tank to bowl connection, and have a faulty flush mechanism that is prone to failure. I removed 4 of these toilets & replaced them with American Standard Cadet 3s & Mansfield Altos.
Thank you for your time you spend to produce these plumbing repair videos . I get a kick out of your comments you sound alot like me. One thing you can try on those leaky pesky shut off packing nuts ,which may help, is first loosen it up a tad before tightening ,and then give it just a little Gundy. Seems like the nut will tighten down a lot easier.
Kohlers are the worst toilets made!!!!!!! I bought 2, 1.6gal and both of them had to flush them 19 times before the stuff would go down. My new plumber said the same thing, bad toilets. Recommended American Standard.
Hi steve good job done and miss molly looks fantastic with the wind in her fur and on the face having a nice time with her daddy she a credit to you 🙂🙂👍.
Reading an old plumbing book (ref from Fine Homebuiding Mag ...I think) , Peter Hemp used to slop on pipe dope compound both sides of the sponge rubber gasket. I did that a few times and it works quite well. Use the stuff that doesn't harden over time and you won't have problems down the road.
What toilet brands do you recommend Steve? I know you know the best bang for your buck n the top shelf ones. Your advice would help alot of people. I have a Kohler too
Yikes I have a new kohler sitting in the garage. The reason I’m replacing the original toilet is that no matter what I do the tank leaks where the left bolt comes through. I’m afraid that I would crack the tank. What is that metal bracket made from. SS I hope. If not I’ll bring it back
Working on a property today and found a new use for electrical tape. Put it on the threads of the popup to stop the leak. Can't make this stuff up is so correct.
You could see that Steve was right. The old gasket was compressed. The new gasket was obviously much thicker. IF this had been a "normal" tank setup, he could have just tightened the bolts.
Wow.. It wasn't in the Ice Cream Truck? Had to run to the supply house for it.. Massachusetts still insisting on the Coronavirus Facepanties still? Boy how Molly LOVES riding in the Ice Cream Truck now.. When she was a tiny baby she was kind of scared the first few times.. She's an old veteran now.. God bless.
most older plumber's complain about the newer innovations to plumbing. Its called being a grumpy old man, lol. I'm sure that older guys who only installed galvanized water supply thought copper was b.s. at one point, too.
if you use a lot of toilet paper maybe best to flush twice ,,to much paper will block the low water use toilets 1/2 way through do a flush,,,,,,,hence double flush
Good to know,...it looks like as the tank seal compresses with age, those metal tabs bottom out and keep the tank from settling all the way. I agree it looks like a crappy design, even considering it is crapped in.
I just had to fix a toilet leak where the plumber did what you did, mf'ing putty on the gasket. It took me an hour to scrape and sand the old putty off and put the proper gasket in place.
That's not putty that Steve used. That Megaloc thread sealant isn't going to dry all sticky and crusty. It should wipe off without a ton of trouble later on.
Hey Steve, ever had flux go bad? Ive had two issues now with older flux I just don't use it fast and it sits in my car hetting hot in the summer. Id love so feedback on this.
I just installed two of these for a customer. I agree. Dumb idea tank will also rock a little because you can only tighten so much.
Nice job and video
Steve, amazing how some fixes can be so simple like tightening up the nut. Learned a lot from your video's and I thank you for that !!
I have a Mansfield and I need to plunge regularly. I keep the plunger next to the toilet.
Mansfields are meant for looks. Not for use.
Homebuilders can buy several Mansfield Altos for cheap. However, they are cheap because they are garbage.

First time ever seen steve run to the supply House for something LOL
I was thinking the same thing. I guess his rolling supply house does have its limits.
Probably because all the toilets he works on are ones he Installed.
It's like Steve said it's a piece of Kohler I hate that model of toilet
Steve probably had to lighten the load back when he had to have the van towed when it broke down.

Kohler needs to come out with a thicker gasket so it compresses tighter
just looked at my kohler... got the same type of connection; didn't think to look before. at least I won't be surprised when it starts leaking..
That was a nice 👍 quickie.! 😎✌️
Great job Steve! I’ve binged watched at least 85 videos while on quarantine these past couple of days! Just keeps getting better!
I been binge watching for 2 yrs now. Lol. Still cant catch up with all the videos.
Do you put thread sealent on the wax seal to
When you were tightening that packing nut, I had visions of the copper pipe breaking because you were not supporting it.
Nice different one today. Thanks for the piece of Kohler tip. I'm about to replace my American Standard.
Replaced my toilet with a one piece Kohler toilet bowl in 2007 and had no problem with leak ever since .
@@dellisles3562 yeah, they used to be good. Sounds like they went with a design change. I dont like the 2 piece and that bracket the way it sits now.
Looking at the brown streak on the toilet I could hear you saying "why do you wear gloves? I can't figure it out"
Odd spot for a Shit Streak.
I think that sink drain is missing another fitting. I usually shoot for 10 or more parts.
miss molly loving that fresh air!
Ever try building the gasket up with wax seal ?
What toilet brands do you recommend Steve? I know you know the best bang for your buck n the top shelf ones. Your advice would help alot of people. I have a Kohler too
@Jason Blanchette I have worked on & replaced toilets for many years & also prefer Mansfield & American Standard.
Those kohler gaskets suck. I’ve been changing the kohler flush towers out and replacing with generic flush valves with flappers.
Hope you charged extra for cleaning. Thanks for sharing Steve
" Put some Fritz on the gasket, we don't want no leekahs!" 👍

"I don't see no cracks"
That's cuz the camera isn't behind you
Surprised you just didn't replace that gasket from the get go. I would have never been comfortable with the looks of that old gasket
Molly is a bundle of joy
Awesome good job
how many times does a toilet need to be reinvented kohler?
You could see that Steve was right. The old gasket was compressed. The new gasket was obviously much thicker. IF this had been a "normal" tank setup, he could have just tightened the bolts.
Hey Steve
Did I see you use a pair of Knipex pliers instead of Douglas???
Thanks for being the honest guy out there! Love you pooch. ♥️
You should keep a few in the truck
Good job mate 👍👌
I wonder if those sink drain gaskets shrink over time and loosen up?
Nice job buddy
Would putting silicone on old toilet gasket fix the leak ? Thanks
Steve, great videos! Question, what are the best toliets in your opinion? Toto?
9:10 truck seems to be sounding rough in the heat
I thought I was still listening to the mower.
I admit Kohler is garbage but even if that sealent worked it would of been a temp fix. Bad plumbing
Given the opportunity, would Miss Molly chase a rabbit?
Did you buy 2 so you have one on the truck? Everyone is shocked you didn’t have it!
Could someone tell me the name of the tool that he used to unscrew the tank to bowl bolts?
That's a 3/8 driver that accepts sockets
craftsman 1/4 socket driver with 1/4 inch deep sockets i have 9/16 ,1/2 ,7/16 ,3/8 in box
Put a new gasket on regardless.
I wish you were in my city....
Kohler l.6 gal is my least favorite toilet. Over designed NOT to fit.
You cant make this shit up, mama!
She’s a LEAKA! (I find myself saying that every time I find an A/C system low on charge!)
New video. Nice
What camera do you use for your videos?
Dang, thought from the title he was fixing his own place. Wanted to say, No Taj Mahal. Good enough for this neighborhood.
So Steve how do like those Koehler toilets....
I get the feeling steve doesn't like Kohler
First time to run for parts!
How do you keep Miss Molly cool on those hot days
By this time somebody usually comments: "But why the gloves?" Lol Ha ha ....
Kohler is made in the usa though right there in texas. Id still buy it just because of usa made
God bless.
can't hurt to add a little fritz.....
*Reinventing the crapper is such a bad idea! Why?! Why would you do this?!*
It's not often you don't have a part on the truck! How about some more cooking videos??
Surprised you put Dope on it, Instead of just changing it out.
I should have kept watching before commenting ...pipe dope works usually!
Box store special
Gotta love a good shit show. LOL
How do you not clean your toilet if you are having someone come fix it .
Another "Quickie" for Steve, except for the Kohler 'shit show".
most older plumber's complain about the newer innovations to plumbing. Its called being a grumpy old man, lol. I'm sure that older guys who only installed galvanized water supply thought copper was b.s. at one point, too.
What's the best toilet tissue for a clog free toilet? And go!
if you use a lot of toilet paper maybe best to flush twice ,,to much paper will block the low water use toilets 1/2 way through do a flush,,,,,,,hence double flush
Couple of loose nuts! Loose as a Goose 🔧 Good enough for this neighborhood 🏠
...“this ain't no Tah Mahal momma„ 😂
am I the only one who thinks 'i'll just tighten it up -- quick fix' 30 seconds later I'm soaking wet and running for the shut off.
Hi Steve, I'm not sure if you said you liked Kohler toilets or you did not like them? I am not quite sure.
Miss Molly says doggone it ,pipe dope didn't work momma!
Easy job it will take me 45 minutes with parts on hands
The hell was all the noise in the background? Someone doing yard work?
Good to know,...it looks like as the tank seal compresses with age, those metal tabs bottom out and keep the tank from settling all the way. I agree it looks like a crappy design, even considering it is crapped in.
THe metal bracket also has a tendency to rust & fall apart.
American Standard
Should of bought a Toto
is that bracket a bad idea? watch the video to learn the shocking truth!
add the fritz...
Don’t over tighten the sink, it’s plastic
Love the videos, learning alot from you. I do have to ask, have you ever went to a toliet call and it was so nasty dirty, you said no thanks
why do you wear gloves Steve.
The chicken bones toilet was a nasty one! No Taj Mahal there mama.
I just had to fix a toilet leak where the plumber did what you did, mf'ing putty on the gasket. It took me an hour to scrape and sand the old putty off and put the proper gasket in place.

Would of replaced the gasket right off the bat...
Yep that toilet is a POS and it just cost that lady $150. To get it fixed
Made bracket so homeowners can work on their own, that toilet sold at the China depot.
It’s a Kohler cimmaron. Not a china depot toilet
👍
Hey Steve, ever had flux go bad? Ive had two issues now with older flux I just don't use it fast and it sits in my car hetting hot in the summer. Id love so feedback on this.
Your assistant is gonna need a mask ? LOL
Thought at first the guy had bad aim
When in doubt, pipe dope.... 🙃
That really is a dumb idea for that kind of design, next time I need a toilet I don’t know which one I’ll get but I know it won’t be Kohler.
