Only the very best for the Cologne Cathedral...To remove a 33 meter high and 25 tonnes heavy suspended aluminum scaffold in three parts from the north tower, a brand-new and second largest mobile crane of the world from Liebherr is called into action -- the LTM 1750-9.1. The 750 tonnes (loading capacity) gigacrane was assembled on July 21, 2013 beginning on Sunday morning at 10a.m., with a little break, until Monday morning, July 22, 2013, at 5a.m. in perfect teamwork by the Wasel company from Cologne/Bergheim. For the supports of the crane, foundations had to be cast into the station's forecourt. Operating weight of the mobile crane: 108 tonnes -- complete ballast (counter weight) 204 tonnes. The biggest mobile crane worldwide -- the LTM 11200 -- also built by Liebherr.
The film was provided in sextuple speed. This way the absolutely confident procedure of the buildup becomes even more recognizable -- not a stroke of work too much -- not a single step back!! This naturally also applies to the scaffolding specialists of the cathedral workshop. They already developed the scaffold that has to be taken down by the crane in the 1990s -- it does not need dowels to be fixed in the rock. It is just suspended in the tower, therefore the name: hanging scaffold. The first scaffold was built in June 1996 and removed in 2006 by a crane of the Wasel company. This operation here however outshines everything that has been acomplished so far in terms of hight.
At the end of the movie you can hear three chimes of the Peter's bell for three hanging scaffolds -- two distant ones and one that is under construction. Eight hanging scaffolds in total are required to restore the two towers, including the figures. Every single scaffold is suspended in air for about eight years -- depending on the weather condition.
A crane has to remove the scaffolds six more times. What is such a crane going to look like in about 60 years? And what is the cathedral going to look like? Hopefully in a top condition, when through its help the cathedral workshop can continue to work!

Für den Kölner Dom nur das Allerbeste.... Um ein 33 Meter hohes und insgesamt 25 Tonnen schweres Alu-Hängegerüst in drei Teilen vom Nordturm zu entfernen - kommt ein nagelneuer und der weltweit zweit-größte Mobilkran von Liebherr - der LTM 1750-9.1 zum Einsatz. Der 750 Tonnen (Traglast) Gigakran wurde am 21.07.2013 von Sonntagmorgen 10 Uhr, mit kleiner Pause, bis Montagfrüh am 22.07.2013 um 5 Uhr in perfekter Teamarbeit durch die Firma Wasel aus Köln/Bergheim, montiert. Es mußten für die Stützen des Krans extra Fundamente in den Bahnhofsvorplatz gegossen werden. Einsatzgewicht des Mobilkrans: 108 Tonnen - Gesamtballast (Gegengewicht) 204 Tonnen. Der größte Mobilkran weltweit - der LTM 11200 - wird auch von Liebherr gebaut.
Der Film wurde in 6facher Geschwindigkeit bereitgestellt. Dadurch wird der absolut souveräne Ablauf des Aufbaus noch deutlicher - kein Handschlag zuviel - kein Schritt zurück!! Dies gilt natürlich auch für die Gerüstbau-Spezialisten der Dombauhütte. Sie haben das durch den Kran abzuhängende Gerüst schon in den 1990er Jahre entwickelt. Es kommt ohne Dübel im Gestein aus. Es hängt nur im Turm deshalb der Name: Hängegerüst. Das erste Gerüst wurde Juni 1996 gebaut und 2006 auch durch einen Kran der Firma Wasel abgehangen. Diese Aktion hier allerdings stellt alles in den Schatten was an Höhe bisher erreicht wurde.
Sie hören am Schluß des Films drei Schläge der Petersglocke für drei Hängegerüste - zwei entfernte und eins das im Bau ist. Insgesamt sind acht notwendig um beide Türme, inklusive Figuren, wieder Instand zu setzen. Jedes einzelne Gerüst hängt etwa acht Jahre - je nach Wetterlage. Noch sechs mal muss ein Kran hier abhängen. Wie wird wohl ein solcher Kran in ca. 60 Jahre aussehen? Und wie wird der Dom dann wohl aussehen? Hoffentlich in Top-Zustand wenn durch ihre Hilfe die Dombauhütte weiter arbeiten kann! Vielen Dank. Das Gerüst hatte ein Gesamtgewicht von 25 Tonnen. Kein Problem für die meisten Krane. Das Problem war jedoch die Entfernung! Der Mobilkran konnte nur sicher auf dem Bahnhofsplatz aufgebaut werden - weil der Dom zu dreiviertel von Tiefgarage oder a. Bauten umgeben ist. Deswegen waren 160m Spannweite erforderlich. Noch vor zwei Jahren wäre diese Aktion technisch unmöglich zu realisieren gewesen. Erst der neue Liebherr Mobilkran LTM 750 9.1 konnte dies meistern. Krandaten > im Info

I have a photo of my mother in front of the cathedral in 1962. It still had a lot of bomb damage on it from ww2. They stopped bombing inner Cologne when they realized pilots were using the cathedral as a navigation point as it could be seen from 50 miles away or more. It is a miracle it even survived as the city was flattened.
The way the cathedral is built was the main reason it survived, lots of free standing arches and other free standing elements surrounded by air Wich makes it hard for the shockwave to destroy the main structure

Back in the day those scaffolds were made of wood. The Chinese still use bamboo to make scaffolding. My friends watched a 20 story building being constructed in China twenty years ago while visiting. The workers would climbed up one end of the bamboo scaffolding with their load and descended at the other end. There were many hundreds of them on this project. The line of workers never stopped from dawn to dusk. They had a birds eye view from their hotel room for a week.

+++May 2015...endlich mal wieder eine spektakuläre Kranaktion in unserer Stadt die sich lohnte vier Tage lang aufzunehmen!...Es wurde von der Firma Colonia mit einem LTM (?) ein 130 Meter hoher freistehender "Wolffkran" beim TÜV Rheinland aufgebaut. Eine perfekt gelungene Show!!! In ein paar Wochen werde ich mehrere neue Clips auf meinem Kanal präsentieren. Danke für Euere Geduld.

Ein Wahnsinns Video Was wiegt das ganze ? Würde mich interessieren !!
Sollen die Gerüste am Dom eigentlich irgendwann komplett verschwinden, oder ist das ein Prozess ohne Ende (wie das streichen bei der Golden Gate Bridge)? Ich finde es schadet der Optik schon beachtlich.
Niemals wird der Dom ohne Gerüste sein. Die jetzigen Gerüstbauer von der Dombauhütte werden nicht mehr erleben das der Südturm fertig wird. Seid 1996 wandert diese Art von Gerüst, welches im Video abgehangen wird, um den Nordturm. Das letzte wird gerade gebaut und bleibt acht Jahre hängen. Danach geht es am Südturm weiter. Das heißt diese Turmaktionen werden noch ca. 50Jahre dauern. Es gibt natürlich noch ne Menge anderer temporärer Gerüste die jedoch nicht so interessant sind und meist vom Boden aus aufgebaut werden. Was wird zuerst fertig ? Ist es der Berliner Flughafen? Ist es Stuttgart 21. Ist es der Kölner Dom? Oder ist es die Mauer zu Mexico?
Der Kölner und auch die Kölnerinnen sagen: wenn der Dom fertig ist, geht die Welt unter... Nun sieht es so aus, als wäre Donald schneller...!
Der Dom wird nie fertig sein, da er konstant restauriert werden muss.
Schöner film , interessant, doch welche Frage tut sich bei mir auf? Der Dom hatte diese häßlichen Gerüste 300 Jahre lang nicht nötig, jetzt hängen die fast 20 jahre lang schon an dem Turm. Was soll das? Wie haben die den Turm eigentlich vor Erfindung der Hydraulik in Stand gehalten?

9.38. Saint Peters Bell. The largest free swinging bell in the world. Over 3 metres in diameter weighing just over 24 tons including a 600kg clapper. I have stood right next to that bell and the sound is incredible. If ever you are in Cologne put this visit at the top of your list. An amazing experience.

Ein Mettbrötchen und ein Kasten Reissdorfer Kölsch. Man bekommt schon "einfache" Mobilkrane dieser Firma im Schnitt für 150€ mit Fahrer pro Stunde.

That cathedral needs a good pressure wash. I'm pretty sure it was almost pure white when it was first constructed. The public will appreciate its glistening walls and spires way more than they will appreciate some minor repairs three hundred feet up one of those majestic spires.

Wenn man sich das überlegt, da wird den ganzen Tag ein Kran aufgebaut um im Endeffekt eine Nettohebeleistung von 30 min zu erreichen.

es gibt auch andere Firmen die Kräne herstellen und bei denen gab es sicher lich schon so einen Kran und der ist ja nicht mal der stärkste
Stimmt, dieser ist nicht der Stärkste. Der stärkste Mobilkran weltweit ist der LTM 11200-9.1. Nun rate mal wer den baut?. Nein ich arbeite nicht für die Firma! Aber denen ihre Firmengeschichte ist einfach genial. Und deshalb bin ich in gewisser Weise ein Fan. Auf jeden Fall fühle ich mich in der Nähe von Liebherr Maschinen sicher. Nächstes Jahr (Start noch ungewiss) zeige ich mehr Mega-Gerätschaften die sich in unserem 2000 Jahre alten Dorf die letzen 12 Jahre rumgetrieben haben. Wie z.B. die Herrenknecht Tunnelbohrmaschine* - die einen Super Job gemacht hat.
Ja wirklich hat sie. Als das Stadtarchiv in Köln einstürzte, war die TBM* längst abtranportiert und zu Besuch beim Zahnarzt in Schwanau.

What surprises me the most is that people were allowed to walk under the lifted load... I have been sites where absolutely no one was allowed to be under the lifted load. No matter how small the load was. And that was with proffesionals. So to allow 'normal' people under it? If the load shifted for whatever reason, the result could have been an absolute disaster.
I don`t know if anyone was walking directly under this monster (camera angles can be deceiving), but the danger zone, if a failure occurred, would have to be at least 2 city blocks in all directions...AMAZING ENGINEERING to design, construct and operate this beast; yet there are MANY videos on You Tube showing cranes, of all shapes and sizes, failing & crumpling to the ground. When I hear the word CRANE, my pulse quickens ! Then there is that SCAFFOLD; also an incredible bit of workmanship !! Thank you for sharing this remarkable video with the world.
