  • About loud neighbors, thin walls. Ah...apartment life: Saturdays you DON'T mow the lawn, the roof leaks you DON'T have to bid out contractors, AC breaks and you don't need a PERSONAL LOAN, swim in a pool WITHOUT hiring a pool guy! But guess what..you might hear your neighbors!!
Yes, apartment life is easier than caring for a home, but it comes with some drawbacks. If it is safe, we always recommend trying this approach first before starting a battle. This is from a landlord AND a renter.
We encourage you to try this far out tip to diffuse a problematic situation and get the best possible outcome with your noisy neighbor or noisy tenant!

Problem with telling them they are annoying you is that, afterwards when they CONTINUE to do it...and even get worse, you now are aware that they are doing it ON PURPOSE, just to annoy you. That feels 100 times worse than just thinking they are unknowingly loud.
Jerk neighbors get some sort of sadistic pleasure from being obnoxiously loud. I guarantee that in MOST cases, they will increase the noise after you talk to them.
One way of knowing whether you can approach them is when you meet them, do they make eye contact or say hello as if they are totally unaware? If they do, they may well be worth approaching. But people who play music loud or shout all the time, likely ALREADY know they are loud but they just don't care.

My neighbors summed up. For 1 whole year they blast music. My families beds rattle and we are mentally not good. We always ask them nicely to turn it down. They do that and the next day the music is blasting again. Another problem is that they are always drunk. I always see a big empty box of Corona beer for the trash from them. So they remember what we said and then they get drunk and forget about everything. We just have no way to connect with them.

I live under someone who takes t-rex steps so loud I can know exactly where they are in their apartment at all times. Then the apartment right next to my room has this young immature college couple renting a room together and they talk so loud all day up to 2 am every night. I already dislike people but I'm starting to hate them. They pay a fraction of what I have to pay since they only rent a room and I rented a whole apartment by myself specifically to get away from noise since I'm a student with adhd. I'm normally really quiet and think of others so I get so infuriated with how obnoxiously self centered people can be.

As a last resort we blasted the music on our ceiling. The mom wasn't impressed as she was snarly when we passed her in the hall. She feels entitled to make noise during the day; her daughter deserves to be able to stomp dance when she wants. Stomp, stomp, stomp. And it's her now too... it seems when she housecleans, she's decided to stomp more herself. Pretty sad excuse for a human being. I'm in the process of seeing if management could intervene. It's our last resort short of bringing the speakers into the bedroom ceiling, their floor.

Dealing with this right now...ugh. Neighbors' children literally jumping, pounding on walls/floor all day as if they're the only ones who live in the complex. Have sent complaints and videos to property management. They do the bare minimum bc they don't want to kick anyone out or let me leave. They just want the units rented - all they care about is the money and not having to spend time looking for more tenants. What I learned and suggest for others for the next rental: Negotiate/look for a 6 month lease or short term and ask for agreement to specify "nuisances". If a landlord wants you as a long term/reliable/no drama tenant, then sign a lease on your terms. If they don't want to, then they can deal with unreliable and inconsiderate tenants. I've done my best to find a peaceful resolution, but at this point I'd rather take my business elsewhere.

I guess they were upset and were just being vindictive. So another call was made, and the police showed up again. I think they were either given some type of warning or felt embarrassed because ever since then, it's gotten a lot quieter. My up stairs neighbor doesn't have anything in her apartment and she doesn't have a job or a car she have a bad daughter that looks like she needs to be in school. She follows me around the house 27 like I have no privacy at all I could leave and go to work around 2pm and she will follow me around until I walk out the door and I dont come back home until 11pm or 12 she stands by the door that whole time waiting on me to come back. She waits up just so she can hear me take a shower and watch TV. And around 9am sometimes I will get sometimes not because im still sleepy I would hear her get on the floor and listen to me sleep and everytime she does it I wake up because I can feel her energy. If she doesn't hear me snoring anymore she gets up fast and runs off. Then comes back with something heavy and drop it over my head and if she doesn't hear my bed because it makes up a noise she would go and get a vacuum and leave it in one spot for 25min to try and wake me. Mind you I was already up because I felt her listening to me sleep then she turns that off and start stomping in place and she will have her daughter do the same. Then she will go get a hammer and start hitting the floor hard like by that I time I already got out of bed and was in the bathroom she didn't know it. Then she comes back in and starts dropping stuff then I flush the toilet they come running out the room into the bathroom hitting the walls and stomping. I walk out the bathroom and go to the kitchen they listen on all the walls to try and find me just to stomp over my head. So I turn on the TV they are quite and sit in the area where its at and listen to what im listening to so I turn it down so they can't hear. She gets angry and start stomping so I turn the TV off and watch it on my phone with headphones I get up to use the bathroom I hear her go behind the toilet to listen to me use the toilet. Then I had enough and leave i come back she does the same thing when its time for me to take a shower she either follows me to the bathroom or she goes to that laundry room and listen to the water heater because it makes a noise where if water is running it will make a noise. So now when I take a shower I have to turn out the lights because I feel like she is watching me. I turn on the bathroom fan I turn on my box fan and put it on the wall the in turn on the dishwasher then I turn on three washer and dryer just to take a shower so she can't hear me. Then I turn everything off she then waits for 30mins to come in the room stomping so it will be hard to go to sleep and she would sometimes have her daughter listen to me if she on the phone and her daughter do the same stuff she do. My 2 neighbor next door blast her music for hours one time she had her music on for a month straight and didn't turn it off I was sleep Sleep deprived to I called the cops this lady had a cop monitor in her house so she knew when the cops would come and she would turn it off. Until they came so my upstairs neighbors is dumb ass hell she calls the cops on us because she thinks we are playing loud music when its not us that because she listen on are walls way to much. So that neighbor moved out well my up stairs neighbor have and upstairs neighbors. They are sick of her also so they turn on music and again my neighbor thought it was us and started being real ugly she would take stuff and drop she would walk around in high heels stomping and she would take a hammer hitting stuff. I believe she know it wasn't us she just waited to be a bitch and do it. Im just sick and tired of this woman and I really wanna beat the shit out of her but I know she would call the cops and I would go to jail. I keep saying to anyone you might wanna becareful on what you do to people because you might get someone who's crazy and or had enough of life and would actually do something bad to you. I had neighbor before he had enough of life and shot and killed his neighbors his upstairs neighbors and the other upstairs neighbors then he killed his self. It was another couple in New York they have been going at it for years because music was to loud the couple had enough and killed the neighbors and who ever else was in that house. So my thing is if you have the money then move if not try and save or deal with it until your lease is up then move and find something that have concrete walls and floors.

Manager calling them many times, until one day they got all quite for 2 years, from hell to heaven. So they know how to be quite. I believe the manager said to them: "it's the last straw, change or you are out". Manager has more power than the police. Because the police got tired coming here and also embarrassing, because one day the police told me, this problem is because of your manager. This problem is management issue. They improved, but they have relapses and I have to complain again, the continuous bang, bang, stomp for hours. I don't know how somebody can hit the floor every 2 minutes for 3 hours, don't you break your feet and legs, don't you brake your hand? don't you get tired of marching in circle in the floor. Can you sit down for a minute? or did they made, programme a device to hit the floor every 2 minutes for hours. pah, pah, pah, tum, tum, tum, tum.....I even thought, the guy is sitting and bouncing in his chair and hitting the feet of the chair. but don't you brake your feet, moron? it's crazy. To top it off their dog as well drops things on the floor and sometimes it last all night long. The management company really doesn’t care and all they do is send out emails that people don’t pay attention to and even the police don’t even do their job and be stern with the tenants when they front them, making them think as if it’s not a big deal then I’m left to just deal with it as if I don’t pay my rent and should have a right to quiet enjoyment. That is true! And the neighbor of the resident at the other apartment building also didn’t lose their mind. Some people are slightly crazy or off their rocker..best to not involve them.
The point is this, in reality people at a typical building may break down like this:
      40% actually polite, will cooperate
20% no reply but slightly help, barely at all
      15% be worse/hate/argue (careful language)
15% try to help but don’t change
      10% crazy (leave alone)
But in our MINDS, it feels like everyone is:
      100% hate/argue/crazy
If approached with mindfulness you have a chance of improving things, and it is worth a try.
For the 25% that may be argue or crazy…. that’s up to you to identify from a distance before you intervene. Another valuable life skill.
Note: surely very poor neighborhoods/government housing are surely much worse than those numbers above, which is sad and a different topic. This is more for apartments that are expensive enough to be decent but still accessible to working class folks.
Thanks for watching enough to get the name of the guy. And good luck 🙏🏼

Why don’t landlords require rugs with rug padding? Also please ask upstairs neighbors to not wear heavy shoes or heels while walking back and forth. My upstairs neighbor drops things on the hardwood floor over our bedroom after midnight and stomps back and forth. Every night. She’s a heavy walker. We tried to talk to her. But she can’t see that she’s doing anything wrong. I get it, I’ve been rude before and didn’t understand that I was in the wrong until much later when a similar thing happened to me. But I also think that landlords have some responsibility in the situation. Don’t put rude young people upstairs. Demand that upstairs tenants get 80% rugs with rug padding covering hardwood floors. Also make sure your buildings are maintained. If there is no insulation between floors, do something about that.

New management was brought in shortly afterwards and they asked what was going on. I had recorded what I was hearing daily using a fairly inexpensive microphone from Amazon and played HOURS for them. Wouldn’t leave the office until I was satisfied. Then I had them come over every time the Clydesdale paced for more than 1 hour. Every. Single. Time. Even if I had to say it was about something else. If I was going to have to live with it, so would they. Since she paced for 5 to 16 hours a day, it was easy to point out. I figured they would eventually get sick of it and cut me loose or boot them out…either way was a win. In the end, they tossed the neighbors by not giving them a choice to renew their lease. My neighbors across the street blast their car radios when they come home, they have those special people sound systems so everyone can hear them... I wrote a note and left it on their windshield saying "Some of us would like to ask you to not bump your beats at odd hours while some are sleeping, we understand some people come home odd hours but maybe turning it down before you enter the neighborhood would be cool, thanks" They started blasted it even longer and louder(slamming their car door and laughing also), so I bought a 10000 lumen spot light for my roof that is remote controlled and beamed their car as they did it, which didn't really stop them, they stopped after though I started blasting my new outdoor speakers directed at their home from 8am-9pm sun-thurs, and 8am-11pm fri/sat, local sound ordinances allowed this time frame. Gotta love Brittany and barbie girl to deal with my antics... which i assume they didn't as they didn't renew their lease and moved. The dogs were loud af. And went on for yrs. Told the landlord. Nothing got done.
I finally got feed up when one of the dogs got really sick. And you literally hear the pain of kettle cough coming from the dog.
During that time I had a major operation. I needed peace. And I was feed up.

It took the tenant 3 months when he is suppose to have it in the first month. Granted I was understanding. Needless to say I was open, he neglected to let me know that its not just him but a family and with a toddler he let's loose to do whatever she pleases and stomp around running and dropping what sounds like dumb bells until midnight. I'm an accountant professional who deals with numbers I need sleep but ironically the last three families didn't get the hint even after your suggestion all three times. I've come to the point of not wanting kids after my experience bcuz I understand kids need place to play, go outside or better yet teach them a schedule and most kids I knew were asleep by 9pm. Neighbors should be tested on compatibility before being paired with other neighbors. For example, if a neighbor has kids who they would say are hyperactive, then they shouldn't be placed on a higher floor. Especially neighbors with dogs. If they previously lived in a house, they should be placed on the bottom floor because people who migrate from houses to apartments are probably going to be some of the more noisy neighbors because they aren't used to living under anyone.

Unfortunately, people who have no respect for their neighbors in apartments to begin with, most likely aren’t going to respond nicely to bringing issues to their attention.
We just renewed our lease and of course the apt above us (that has been vacant the last several months) has new tenants. They are constantly stomping around all the time, making so much unnecessary noises & even vacuum after 10pm. It’s driving us nuts, but even more so our dog is barking when they are being extremely loud, which could disturb other neighbors. Part of the blame is on the way the apts were built, but a lot is on the people. They are on top floor, so maybe they just have no clue how loud they are being without neighbors above them?!
What is a nice way of letting them know how much we here? I’ve tried to think of nice ways to mention it if we meet them, but most come across like I’m just being a b**** 😆 we did ask our leasing manager to send an email reminding 3rd floor tenants to be respectful of those in apt below them, but I doubt she will bother sending it.

So she gets a dog, her dog craps everywhere & I asked her nicely that it's messy & I offered her doggie doo bags. She takes it upon herself to allow the dog to shit more areas & blames other dogs. She dumps her dog shit into my trash bin, gets drunk & yells out random dumb crap directed at me across the alley, amongst other juvenile bs. I started to mow my lawn at night and it's right under the window where they sleep. It's a retirement community and grandma brought her daughter who doesn't work, to live in the garage with two wild kids and a Great Dane. We need our naps lol.😅🤣😂 Talking didn't work because I sold her the house and knew her for 20 years. Our friendship was destroyed over all the kids screaming and dog peeing and pooping all over. Absolutely no respect for our community. 😢 So I blame myself for thinking I did her a favor, never realizing she would take advantage of me and the other neighbors. 😠 😡

Isn't it the responsibility of the management office to immediately act as the mediator and handle the situation and stop the noisy person's activities or evict them? The responsibility should never be put on the tenant to confront the noisy neighbor themselves. That's just asking for an even worse situation.

Yells F you then doesn't want to open the door lol. That's the typical type of person who likes to make noise, all bark and no bite. On a side note, I've been in this situation numerous times where the other tenants are loud, extra people moved in etc and the land lord doesn't seem to care. Gather evidence, lawyer up and move out. I've went against a few slum lords and it always ends in a settlement (the same offer I give them before moving out and contacting my lawyer, which they usually laugh at) or their case gets dismissed all together. Their attitudes flip 180 once they get served with a counter claim and they quickly find out you are not a push-over.
On the flip side of the slum lords, I have had a very small number of land lords that are legit nice people and take care of their tenants. They don't put up with BS and stay on top of maintenance and who resides in their buildings. These land lords are few and far between but I have the utmost respect for them.

About a year and a half ago, new neighbors moved in next door. They were occasionally loud, but nothing too bad. Then his jail bird buddy moves in with the ladies who live on the end unit. Now, all kinds of strangers are outside, being loud, leaving trash outside and playing rap music with heavy bass that vibrates the unit, all hours of the day and into the night. They have zero consideration for anyone else in the neighborhood, who are also annoyed. At least the ones I spoke to about it. Moving is not an option for us, and I'm losing my patience.

I am on the second floor of our complex and the neighbors have complained on me because apparently I walk too loud (I’m 170), they can hear the dogs footsteps (which is 30 pounds). I tried for many months to walk lightly after that complaint but what I’ve noticed is that everytime I vacuum the neighbors downstairs starts slamming their doors.
So I stopped walking extra light and walked normal.

But at night, he gets up at least 6 times a night and start walking/running on his heels. I tried to adjust my sleep schedule to fit theirs, but it's impossible, it's all the time. They are well aware that I can't take it anymore, I often cry in the middle of the night when he bangs and they hear it for sure (very thin walls/floors). But yet it's been years, the kid didn't learn to walk and I still struggle to catch 4-5 hours of sleep at night. It makes me so sad because I use to be an easy sleeper. Not anymore, i'm traumatized. No money to move elsewhere, feel so trapped in my life right now.

    • @NotJustNinjas
      @NotJustNinjas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you for the comment. First off good luck, the main part of your home is that you want to feel at home there. If it has to become your past because it doesn't feel like home, then begin the process of finding your next home, and try to map that out and enjoy that process. But whil you are there, document things and keep reporting to a manager (or HOA contact). Keep reports simple and facts only, not emotionally charged. Dates, times, etc. Yes, it is emotional and stressful it sounds like, but for reporting, what changes things a record with as much clarity as possible. If family A says they left because loud cars were always revving in the morning, document "Jan 2019 - family A. moved out. They emailed that their main problem was this neighbor's loud car" etc. Eventually, the manager may decide to "non-renew" a lease, or an HOA should intervene if it is a homeowner. Good luck and thank you for sharing.

One time, a new neighbor moved into the upstairs apartment and they LITERALLY moved in at 3 o'clock in the morning!! Dragging their luggage on laminate floor and walking with what sounded like Dutch wooden shoes!!! LITERALLY! Wwwwtf! If you move in at 3am not giving a shiat about the downstairs tenants well, you know the type of neighbors they'll be. Angry, annoyed and upset I said ok ill let it pass its their first day. But damn that a lot for me to just let it pass. Anyhoo, over the next couple of days their noises continued while they were rearranging their furniture etc. Angry, annoyed and upset I said well, I suppose its only fair(in a way) they're just settling in ill let it pass, soon they'll be conscious of their noise. NOPE! I may sound like a passive person but I am beyond that, however i do try and be fair. My gf called management to complain so management sent them a letter and in turn the neighbors gave my gf their cellphone number so that if they were being too noisy to text them, I said GREAT! Problem solved! NOPE! My gf texted them when they were being noisy and they would hush down for about 15 minutes and start again. All this shiat happened early in the morning like 5am+. We never make loud noises, I take my shoes off and use slippers, have music/tv at normal volumes, we are the perfect neighbors bitch! You'd want us as neighbors! I had never interacted with them, it was always my gf(for a reason). Aaanyhoo one day I had it! It was 5 o'clock in the morning and they had loud music and talking real loud like if there was no one living below them! I got up, went to my drawer, grabbed my knife, placed it on my waist, walked upstairs, knocked on the door they opened it and I said "HEY, I have to get up in 2 hours, can you lower your music" while exposing my knife. I walked upstairs with two options, 1- See my knife. 2- Feel my knife. The choice was theirs. I was half awake, half asleep, angry, annoyed and upset I didn't care what would happen. And that's why my gf was the one interacting with them. Afterwards they eventually kept it down till they moved out some 2 years later.

Thank you Christina, good luck! We want people to remember that you asking what YOU can do for them gives the other person an idea that at the very least you're hoping to find middle ground. Be human in your approach. Look for common ground. Even if they look and act different from you.. ask what they do for a living, how they've been with the virus shut down. If they're still mean, then later offer an apology if you offended them. Anything to be on the same team as your neighbor. If they're younger for example, ask what that music is and tell them what you used to listen to when you were that age. Also remember that I myself have been the scared guy before without knowing I could try to improve the situation...in that case.. I got used to those soft #earplugs usually hard to find, but at EVERY big grocery store and #Amazon. Look for the best dB rating. Good luck turning the negative into a positive!

I am just done with the chaos. The go into the bark and we always tell them to stop but it just won't end. I am hoping this letter helps, I have to admit I am friends with an older grandkid. But she gets mad when I tell her not to do something. The adults are all really nice and I like them but the kids are crazy.
