      Same. For my work, I need a somewhat decent gaming laptop but the lack of upgradeability was what stopped me from purchasing another (I stuck with desktop PCs), after my college laptop grew old quite fast. Having the chance to upgrade the GPU is fantastic news.

    Being able to re-use the mainboard and battery in a case is absolutely brilliant as not only they help reduce e-waste. It also helps sell more user removable modules for framework. Will definitely be picking up a framework 16 as need those numkeys - finally a user serviceable laptop to replace my ancient 17inch HP 4730s!

      I dont think so.. if you have your outdated laptop you can sell it.. or give it to someone as whole thing.. in this case you have kinda.. something weird without screen and battery.. Im not sure who want it at home in time then whole laptop can be bought for 800.. and you as 'upgrader' got old case and screen.. so.. no so much 'win-win' ..

    • @Mcdude22
      @Mcdude22 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@maksimmuruev423 perhaps you don’t have a use for it, but plenty of people already have home theater PCs, which an old framework mobo would be ideal for. I personally plan to use my old board as a home development server, firewall, NAS, etc.
      There’s use cases, and the framework community has a ton of people that would have those needs. I could stand to have 3 or 4 mobos in tiny cases. Build the smallest server rack possible with reasonably high end hardware, and extremely power efficient.

    I leafed through the repair and upgrade components, and the fact they offer refurbished and new products, and that they are all very modular. It's a mod and repair paradise! Just the fact that if your mobo burns out you can get not only a direct replacement mainboard, but upgrade to a higher spec series CPU, or even a newer version is incredible. Even get louder speakers if wanted!

    This is the first laptop in a long time i am excited for. My wife has a first generation framework and loves it. I have never had a laptop so easily to upgrade and modify and change.
    My aging old heavy beastly laptop is at its end. I will be preordering framework as soon as it available. This could be that laptop for me, portability and functionality of a latpop with customization and upgradability for a desktop. So, so excited.
    When we preordered a first gen framework, was a bit nervous but framework has been amazing. An American company that does laptops right. Who knew?

    • @jamesbuckwas6575
      @jamesbuckwas6575 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There still aren't standard sizes for motherboards, CPU/GPU sockets, and other connectors across laptops, BUT what framework is doing is far and away what is within their ability, and still beyond anything I expected from them, especially with the input cover and rear expansion bay. Those features will hopefully further increase sales and framework's positive perception (battery life and slight firmware issues aside), leading to these features being widely implemented throughout other laptops as well. This would ensure the positive changes framework is making to laptops extend to other laptops as well, especially as they make open-source all of the CAD and electrical designs for these modules as well, even before the product is available for pre-orders! That is all amazing, and HUGE kudos to framework, and best of luck to them in their future endeavors.

      I still have one of those. Dell. The GPU bit died and I was able to pick one up from the eBay. That was, I think now 12 years ago. Along with swapping the screen from XGA to SXGA+ (and the right ribbon cable. IBM and Compaq never had a unique cable-- the Pentium III/IV days).

How long would AMD and Nvidia keep supplying graphics chips to Framework for modular use and how long until Framework discontinues this 16 inch chassis? I mean they might release a 17 inch or revised 16 inch chassis in the future which would require another GPU bracket. They might only release two GPUs for this PCI connector and then create a different connector when they make a new chassis.

      In case that was what you were referring to: The thunderbolt external GPU case should be working with the 13 inch laptop. Directly inserting their swappable GPUs into the laptop of course would NOT fit the 13 inch model. There are people on the internet reporting successfully using existing eGPUs with their Framework (13) laptops, so it would be weird if the thing Framework themselves produced wouldn't be at least as compatible as that.

    A static cooling system has always been the Achilles heel of the upgradable laptop. They never accounted for scaling cooling to any extent when it came time to put a GPU that took more power and kicked more heat out. Framework has that covered with this approach. Since cooling is integrated into the GPU itself. Next module will have heavier cooling and the room in the bay it needs. I can see a much better shot at longevity for the platform in this case.

      Mate you're a unicorn, even 2 inch thick beasts are dead and gone
      The 250-300W the current gen all seem to be hovering around is a drastic downgrade from the Clevo P870 chassis which could handle >450W constant draw with a desktop CPU and 2x GPUs (if it was put together properly, Clevo had "variable QC" to put it nicely)
      I think the 16 will top out at H CPUs and from the 2 heatpipes mockup, a maximum of 100W GPUs, so that's like 7600S or 4060. It'll take a bigger model to handle anything bigger.
      The Uniwill/Tongfang 16"+17" models have shown the consumer is ready for OEM designed watercooling docks. That will add another possible dimension to increase power.

    1. With the battery case to make a separate charger, my guess is its clear so you can keep an eye on the condition of it. So you can see when it starts to balloon and bulge so you know its time to get rid of it.
    2. Adding 3.5 audio ports is neat... but my big question on that is, does windows treat them as Separate audio devices? If they just act as a "splitter" then its rather pointless. Buuut.. if you can add more audio devices so you can control them separately for a better audio laptop, THAT would be alot more useful.
    3. The custom side keyboard, which im *assuming* is a macro keyboard, is a good idea depending on what the software can do. Is it as basic as a keyboard macro or can it be more advanced and control things similar to a Streamdeck?
    Good potential here, but id like to see more info. Guess we will see later in the year.

    • @vivianmason8867
      @vivianmason8867 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 3.5 ports are usb-c DACs, so each of them will be their own device. I'm looking forward to having two ports just so I can have an external physical knob for mixing between audio of two different programs. I love being able to just reach over and turn down voice comms when I don't want the distraction without having to alt tab.
      I use an ASTRO mixamp right now that has seen better days, I'd love to replace it with a simple 3.5 mixer.
