This is my attempt at a tutorial explaining how to perform unintended exits in Super Mario World. Super Mario World is a notoriously glitchy game, allowing the player to go beyond what was intended by the game designers. Normally, there is a total of 96 exits in the game. Over the years, dedicated gamers discovered several unintended exits (see pastebin.com/wqk0KfbM for list).
I want to find novel unintended exits. It is known that triggering a normal exit in Yoshi’s House using the Orb yields an additional exit, the so-called 99th exit (see • SMW ǀ Unintended Exits... and • SMW ǀ Unintended Exits... for tutorial). Here, I want to trigger a secret exit in Yoshi’s House to see if this could give an additional exit. For this, I used unintendedly spawned Keyhole and Key in the ‘level’.
This glitch requires a lot of Powerup Incrementation (see • SMW ǀ Unintended Power... for a tutorial) to get Mario at Unintended PowerUp Status (between 4 and 255) to be able to spawn the Keyhole and the Key. Basically, Mario has to be at Power Status 211 to get the Keyhole in the Reserve Item box. After dying to reset our Power Status while preserving our Item box, Mario is brought to Power Status 128. This allows Mario to get a Winged Key in the Item box when collecting a Mushroom.
First, we have to perform the Powerup Incrementation glitch to get Mario at Power Status 8. At Power Status 8, go to Yoshi’s Island 2 to get the Key in the item box (see • SMW ǀ Unintended Item ... for tutorial). After, repeat Powerup Incrementation to go to Power Status 211. This Power Status allows Mario to spawn a Keyhole in the item box when collecting a Feather (see • SMW ǀ Unintended Item ... for tutorial). Go to the Top Secret Area without Yoshi. Spawn the Yoshi and used it to grab the Winged Key in the item without being hurt. Leave the Key and Yoshi on the left and the right side of the central block respectively. Hit the left Feather block. Quickly, go on top of the Feather blocks and jump to catch to floating Feather. Try not to touch any input when collecting the Feather. Being at Power Status 211, Mario now has a Keyhole in the item box. Mario now has a Keyhole in the item box. Die in a pit to reset Mario’s Power Status while preserving the Item box. After collecting a Feather, bring Mario to Power Status 128.
Normally, one cannot get any Powerup item spawned in Yoshi’s House. After eating ten Berries, Yoshi lays an egg spawning a Mushroom. So, we have to glitch several Berries in Yoshi’s House to ‘duplicate’ Berries to get to ten in the end. This is based on an excellent tutorial from Pandabear314 (See • Yoshi's House RTA Expl... . After Yoshi laid his egg, the keyhole is spawned from the Item box and Mario collects the Mushroom, yielding a winged key in the item box. Before spawning the key, eat all glitched Berries, otherwise, the Keyhole will disappear. After triggering Yoshi’s House secret exit, the path between Yoshi’s Island 1 and the Yellow Switch Palace is being cleared. However, the path is blocked and Mario cannot go upward to the Palace. In fact, Yoshi’s House secret exit triggered in fact the normal exit of Yoshi’s Island1. So, this unintended exit is not so useful.

My setup: I use an original Japanese Super Mario World cartridge played on a Super Retro Trio 3 Console (PAL version); I thus played in Real-Time Attack [RTA] without Saved States. Video and sound captured using a ‘Dazzle’ and ‘EasyCAP’ USB adapters (Composite signals) and ‘Debut’ software. Video editing done using Shotcut free software.

Sorry if I missed it, but what if you do Yoshi’s Island 1 first to open the path to Yellow Switch Palace, then you do the Yoshi Secret Exit? Would the path then become blocked?

So what's the theoretical maximum number of exits that you could get in this game? If you were to account for every level that could be cleared with these glitches?
Hi Mason! So in addition to the normal 96 exits, gamers were able to add 12 exits more! So reaching 108 exits! (or written A8). Me for now, I was able to get to A6 or 106 exits or 10 additional unintended exits (see this video th-cam.com/video/4kJFT30wpzU/w-d-xo.html). The most IMPORTANT thing is to play the Japanese version, as in the US version of SMW, the exit counter blocks at 96 exits (with the little star!). Hope this answer a bit your question. Cheers!
It may not open a different path that no other level in this area goes to, but at least all this work opened up a path to yellow switch place.

I watched 3 of these unintended exit videos, but didn’t see the end of donut plains 3 secret exit. But the sunken ship and top secret area don’t go anywhere once this is done. Do some unintended secret exit videos actually show a new pathway open from any of these levels??
Hi Double C3! For me, the goal of a lot of these unintended exits is just to be able to do them.... as I like SMW and glitches! While a bunch of unintended exits don't do much... some are kinda useful. For example, all the genuine unintended exits (the one with a number, like 99th) give you an additional exit in the game file! For some exits, it opens up interesting path. For example, if you do an unintended secret exit in the uncleared Yoshi's Island 1 level, you can always have access to the Yellow Switch Palace. Also, the 102nd exit opens up the hidden TEST level. What if you had cleared YI1 first before performing this? Would it still be blocked, etc?
Hi FODDER! If I had YI1 already cleared, I think then the secret exit of Yoshi's House will have done absolutely nothing! and you would still get access to the yellow switch palace because of the normal exit of YI1. This is why I did it here with YI1 uncleared, to see an effect of the unintended secret exit. Thanks a lot and Cheers!

@@itsFODDER I could at one time, but I still have stuff to do with SMW. On my part, I'm not a TASer, I play always RTA. I guess I would try to do the credits warp glitch in SMW with ACE... thanks for the suggestion though, I'll check it out!
Can you get the keyhole with any other power up number? Cause I died after getting the key
Hi Gl1tcherBro! If you play the US version, you usually die when getting the Key in the item box. The only way it is possible, I think, is to be at PS 128 and collect a regular mushroom. You'll get the key and level up once, being at PS129

Edit : juste une dernière chose, je voie que tu joue sur la version japonaise du jeu, est-il possible de le faire sur version USA ou autre ( vue que les fichiers et les patch ne doivent pas être les même) j'ai regardé sur internet mais j'ai rien trouvé :(

Hi Yoshigamer3000! Thanks for the suggestion! I think that this glitch is quite tricky, and can only be relatively easily obtainable using TAS or save-states... which I don't use... I plan to do videos on new unintended exits I did. Maybe later I'll check more to get the grey Yoshi. Do you know how to do it RTA? All the best!

What kept happening to mario's Sprite?
Hi N o ! In regular SMW, Mario powerup status has a value of either 0 (small mario), 1 (big mario), 2 (cape mario) or 3 (fire mario). But this value can go up to 255. Normally we cannot access these unintended powerup status. However, using a glitch called powerup incrementation, you can go to these unintended powerup status. Here, I go to powerup status 211 to get a keyhole in the item box. After, I go to powerup status 128 to be able to get a key in the item box by collecting a mushroom. Also, the appearance of mario at unintended powerup status (4-255) is often a bit messed up! Check out my other videos to see other stuff we can do with mario at unintended powerup status. Edit: yeah I think it's patched for the switch cause the second yoshi has wings.
One More Edit😁: it isn't patched for the switch it still works and your vids helped me thx it's just that the switches emulator gives yoshi wings while doing it.

Reasons as to why i dont recommend doing this:
1. Every port (Real hardware/Vc/Emu/SwitchO.) And every region (Jp/NTSC/PAL/) have a different 'Spit' placement (Pu. Incrementation)
2. (Unless emulator with savestates are used) You have a big risk of crashing the game and Deleting any progress made
3. Interms of 'Illegal' level exit, this is pointless, as this dose Not Count as a 97th exit, simply because it would not save.
And finaly:
4. Unless you have to much time (Which many people dont), You will not have the time to do this.
After first glitch i have black screen and is hearing only music what is wrong
Hi Karo! What do you mean exactly by first glitch...? Do you mean the Powerup Incrementation glitch? If so, it means that you did the glitch wrong... you have spit the null sprite at the right position and/or timing on the rotating platform... Keep on practicing! Good luck!

@@karomsryan4432 Yes, it is possible to do the Powerup Incrementation glitch with the Japanese version (check out my tutorial: th-cam.com/video/WSUzkRNTvbE/w-d-xo.html). The position of Yoshi on the rotating platform is different between the US and Japan versions. For the PAL, I did not manage to do it with this version.... Cheers!

After a while, you begin do 'novel' stuff, just for fun, like here when I triggered an unintended secret exit in Yoshi's House. This exit ressembles Choco-ghost house unintended exit, which is a genuine unintended exit... (see th-cam.com/video/Ti5WWK8qcSw/w-d-xo.html). Hope I answered a bit your question... All the best!
