Silverback Oumbi Gets Himself Some Snow

- Oumbi, the Silverback from the Twycross Zoo is braving the cold and heavy snowfall to get himself some snow to eat. Gorillas and also other primates just love snow.
Shufai, his son already outside in the back. Oumbi got himself a little stepping "Stone" to get up on the climbing frame. Not that he needs any help, but anything to conserve a little energy. Oumbi doesn't stay outside for too long and just grabs what he can and goes back inside. At lunchtime when it stopped snowing, he gets himself some hay, goes inside but is straight back out again to get himself some desert, some more snow. He sits himself down on the platform and enjoys the cold snack. In the end, he fills up his mouth and takes a handful as a takeaway inside with him. :-)

All that muscle mass must radiate a lot of heat, they're probably not that cold.
There’s more muscle on a bear then a gorilla. Bears are very warm so I would assume so.
@@837haja bears have a very thick fat layer to keep them warm. Futhermore, their thick fur creates an air layer which keeps out the cold air from the outside.
I dont think the gorilla in the video is very cold, but without a fat layer and thick fur he wouldnt last long in such temperatures.

I follow a chimp sanctuary and they are equally obsessed with snow. But when it's too cold and they're reluctant to keep going out, the caregivers go out and gather barrels full for them

They really do love it. I've got video of all the family members, apart from Biddy she wasn't out at all. I did ask if she was OK. They said she was fine, but prefered to stay in the back were it was warmer. 😊
