Silverback Gorilla Can Take Only So Much From His Sons

- Lope and Shufai having a play fight in front of their big silverback dad who is sitting quietly in the corner. Shufai, the youngest of the western lowland gorillas at the Twycross Zoo is coming up to the window as to say look at everybody and then runs back to his brother Lope. When those two are tumbling a bit too close to Oumbi, the Silverback grabs Lope gently and turns him around without any effort. The brothers continue to play, but Lope gives Oumbi just that little glance of disapproval as to say we’re only playing dad and anyway Shufai is starting it - it’s not me! :-) Shufai continues to play with Lope while Lope is fighting dad’s arm, which is nearly the same size. Dad just can’t stop himself getting involved and keeps grabbing Lope, but Oumbi seems pretty relaxed with it all. The brothers continue their play. Even when Shufai hits his head, they continue. When you see Shufai’s approach to Lope, you can almost see what the future holds. He is not one to give up easily! Oumbi makes himself comfortable on the floor while continuing to watch.
Lope decides it’s time to annoy dad some more, by trying to grab his face. Little Shufai is quickly running to the other end, he probably knows what is coming. Lope continues by beating his chest in front of Oumbi and just being silly in general. That was the last straw for the silverback as he first pouts his lips and it takes only another chest beat from Lope to make those massive muscles move like a lighting strike launching towards Lope. His son managed to get away, but his dad certainly made his feelings very clear.

No more screaming kids! lol I changed the sound, so hopefully it's a bit more enjoyable for viewing. As for the gorillas having to put up with screaming kids, as you never hear anything from the Gorillas I think the glass is pretty good in keeping out all the noise from the humans. :-)

I don't mind music at times, but what bothered me was the repetitiveness of the beat. Would liked to have seen what happened after the dad went after the son. Thanks.

How he reaches out to give dad a little slap to the face. He's always pushing the envelope with his dad. I'm surprised the patience he shows with Lope 95% of the time...lol.
I believe Lope is one of the closest animal to a human I've witnessed.

Lope thinks everything is a game and its just hysterical how Oumbie let Lope keep going then with that last poke at him and the chest beat, daddy charged him. :-) Even if dad was mad and teaching him respect, i doubt Lope understood the warning. In Lope's world, everyone is playing with him. He is such a funny little Gorilla-boy. I also love watching Lope's face as he plays. He is always smiling with open mouth, cracking up and so happy to engage in play with anyone willing. He is really a sweet little guy. :-)

Daddy was basically telling his older son okay now watch it as you are getting too rough and then at the end when the older son was messing with Daddy and beat his chest, I could tell that Daddy wasn't planning on hurting him, he was just teaching him a lesson. Yep animals are a lot smarter than what people think. ☺️❤️❤️

I love hearing the kids, laughing about Lope and Shufai. Love when Lope appears to have Shufai penned down for the count, and Shafai breaks Lope's hold. Shufai has learned well from watching Lope. Shufai sweet little face riding on Azala back, and Lope doing his best to get close. Shufai might be Lope's worst nightmare. LOL. I love how Shufai is almost clearing the rails. I have watched many, many videos of Professor Lope and Master Shufal wrestling each other, and sometimes Dad is involved. I often wonder if there are times when the boys bring it "near" Dad in secret hopes he will join in with them. Because when the 3 of them are tussling around with each other, the Love I see there is immeasurable. I see some extra joy there when Dad joins in...

I'm the younger brother of 2. My brother and I'd play fight. As it got rougher and my older brother would put himself in a position of dominance. My father would grab him and neutralize his position of power. Allowing me to gain an upper hand.
As I watched. It was seriously like going back in time in my own life.
We are closer to these animals than anyone knows.

I just love that the father plays such an important roll in thier lives. I may be incorrect but the in the majority of animals lives they have many mates and many offspring with no love or detication to any of them. This is so beautiful to watch.

Its a form of thrill seeking the young ones want to be terrified briefly. I think they actually enjoy getting dragged around kind of simijar to the joy of waterskiing.
I pity these poor gorillas who have to bear the visitors' constant noises and shouting. Humans seem to be as noisy as chimps.

Jack Rodgers, Jr. Confined? It may not be as open as it is out in the wild, but they have space to run around if they wish. Not a lot but it's something. They're fed, cared for if they get sick, and they have each other. You make it seem as if they're in cages 24/7 in solitary. Clearly, you don't understand anybody else's way of thinking but your own because if I was a gorilla, I would rather be there. Better than constantly being paranoid about who's going to try to kill you next. If I have to put up with a couple of ignorant people than so be it, it's not like they can actually reach in and poke/annoy the shit out of me. Gorilla's are intelligent enough to know that the visitors should be ignored and honestly, they couldn't give two fucks about us. We're basically peasants to them so why would they pay any mind to us unless it's to show off and mess with us?
It is soundproof. I used to feel the same way about zoos but have come to realize they are necessary.

I’m watching now in 2021 and it’s marvellous to see them as they were... and how Lope was gentle... and Shufai testing his limits. As he stays close to Oumbi as a back up in case in needs a “get out quick clause!” They are much the same size now.
