This concert is to be considered a 'best off'. There are songs from several albums / universes of Ayreon. This one is from 'The Source' as was 'The Day the World Breaks Down'. As it is difficult to get so much talent at the same place at the same time, some different singers fill in the gaps as Maggie Luyten did with her distinctive voice in this one. When you do more songs from this concert you will see many more talented singers appear (no spoilers). Arjen likes using Floor as the clincher of a song, so she will appear now and then.
I don't know how a speechless person can nail a reaction any better !! 99% of us would just give the audience 5 minutes of slack jawed stares/silence after that. Thanks for (finally) getting to this one. It is something I use to get my energies flowing in the morning. Personally, I think the most impressive singing in this one comes from the three wonderful ladies in the 'backline'. Lisette is the only one who gets to solo (well, w/Habsi, but she is much higher in the mix), but they all play an incredible, powerful role. Listen closely to the introduction's last long/held note... It's true that Michael Mills is the last one to fade out, but you will ntice he is not holding done that highest note in the harmony.... on the last note, that's Marcela Bovio (mi corazón) who was up there around G5-ish (sorry, I didn't check) .... lord I love that woman and her voice. Another fun thing to listen to : the reason Floor stands out sooo much when she comes on is that the arrangement pulls everyone else back. The drums adopt a simpler line/less cymbal, the organ disappears except for a single-note walking line, the guitar hits just one simple chord per measure, and they put her voice thru a God's Hall Reverb ... she IS roaring down from a mountain top on that one. Anyway, listen to this a few more times... there is some much going on, and it has such a fun/bouncy feel. As always, I love your reactions. It is an electrifying song, it does not give respite! All Reactors - They celebrate when Floor enters the stage and takes it completely. Arjen usually includes it as a "cherry on the cake", almost at the end. Michael Mills voice range is unique in the world, so wide that it seems that several people coexist within it! All, absolutely all, shine: Maggy Luyten with her voice and personality even harsher than the men on stage; Hansi has excellent timbre and style, Tommy ... well, you know. As a fact: in the chorus of the three vocalists, on the far left of the screen is Irene Jansen, Floor's sister. I knew this song was going to impress you, because it's ... awesome!
For all Floor Jansen fans: Singer Floor Jansen confesses to Flair: 'I thought metal was terrible music' Floor Jansen (39) tours the world as lead singer of the metal band Nightwish and recharges in her house in the woods in Sweden. When she participated last year with 'Beste Zangers', the Netherlands finally got to know her. "Somehow I like that, stupid huh?" She initially did not know the program with which she broke through in the Netherlands, nor did the other artists who participated. She has been living with her Swedish husband Hannes - with whom she had daughter Freja in 2017 - in Sweden for five years and doesn't watch Dutch television. Why did she participate? She was impressed by the footage she saw. Besides, there was a good chance that through her this would make people curious about metal in general and Nightwish in particular. In the last episode she sang Phantom of the opera together with Henk Poort in an unparalleled way, the footage went all over the world. And now the whole of the Netherlands knows who Floor Jansen is. She is relaxed at one of the tables in the lounge. Denim jacket, jeans, long dark hair. Around her, people are busy making calls or working on their laptops. It is a bit like Limburg where she spent part of her childhood. Had Limburg not been an option? “Hannes and I lived in Finland when we met. I had moved there because Nightwish is a Finnish band. Although I sing in English, I wanted to learn the language and it works best when you immerse yourself in it. Finnish is very difficult, I never learned to speak it well. Of course it doesn't help if you have a Swedish man. Hannes missed Sweden and because I was already used to the peace and space in Finland, we moved there. We now have a very nice house in the countryside. With a dog and cats, and my two horses. When we moved into this house, with a huge plot of land around it, I immediately said I wanted horses. That was my girlhood dream.” You were bullied as a child, you call that a dark period, was being with the horses a way to escape for a while? “Because we moved often, I was always an outsider. I spoke differently than the children in my class, looked different, was tall. That bullying lasted seven years. My parents often went to school, but there they calmly said that there was nothing they could do. I can still get angry about that, because you actually say: 'Bad luck for you, just figure it out'. I withdrew to my own world, to nature, to the horses. So yes, in a way that was a flight.” “So was music, by the way. At one point those were the two things I went for. My career choice test also showed equestrian sport and conservatory. I really wanted to go to the conservatory, until I understood that the vocal training was either very classical or jazz. I had nothing to do with either of them. That is why I went to the Equestrian Center Deurne, a horse training course. That was very hard. I ended up there from high school and had to work hard every day. Some muscles in my body had become so hard that the blood flow in my arms was no longer functioning properly. I had a failure in my hands, so bad that I could hardly drive because I let the reins slip out of my hands all the time. It just wasn't fun anymore. When I heard that there was going to be a rock academy, I immediately registered.” Were your parents surprised that you started doing this? "I don't think so. I was also involved in musicals at school, so it didn't come out of the blue. I think they have kept their heart, because of course it is very insecure. But they have always been behind me. They said: 'You have a talent, you have to do something with it.' My father plays the guitar and sings. He's more in the blues corner. My sister Irene also sang in a metal band for a while and we also performed together. But I'm the only one in our family who made it her job." Were you immediately into metal? “I didn't really like it at all. A friend of mine was listening to it and I thought, what kind of horrible music is that? I was a little late developing my own taste. In the first school band I sang in, we played pop and rock songs. I also really liked grunge, but more to listen to. It wasn't until I moved to Limburg and made friends who listened to different metal bands that I saw the beauty of it. It's not just loud screaming and screeching guitars. The music we make with Nightwish has so many nuances, it's pop, folk, rock, symphonic passages, it's very accessible and melodic. For me, this kind of metal music is the ultimate combination of heavy music, pure feelings and female vocals.” Metal music is a man's world, do you thrive on that? “I don't really know any better. I stepped into this life from school. I actually don't realize that I work almost exclusively with men. It works well for me, I like it too. Men are very direct, there is no hassle. I never think: what is your hidden agenda? I do notice, now that I'm getting older, that I miss female company. Just because women look at things differently and that's sometimes a relief when you're only surrounded by men. That's why it was nice that at the time my female friend went along on tour as a nanny. After all these years, people still jump from the chair every time Arjen throws the "Floor bomb" in his songs. She's his Siren, she was featured for the first time in an Arjen song when she was only 16 years old(my house on Mars) and I read somewhere that this song is about to be transmitted from Mars to Earth later this year.

That lady is Magali (Maggy) Luyten (Nightmare). She’s a Belgian female rock singer, vocal coach and voice teacher at MYRIAD VOIC. She played in several local bands before joining forces with the progressive metal band ‘Over Us Eden’ from Aachen, Germany in 2003. She performed guest vocals for different projects, including Ayreon's 01011001. Arjen Lucassen told about her: "I kept bumping into Magali’s name in different bands, and I was so impressed with her voice every time I heard her. I knew I’d like to work with her one day… she is just amazing". She performed live acoustically the song "Ride the Comet" for Ayreon's release party in January 2008 with Floor Jansen and Robert Soeterboek. Their singing voices are very similar, but their speaking voices are an interesting contrast. Floor, while perfectly fluent and clear, still has traces of her natural accent. Irene has a very distinct sort of BBC English accent.
We have so many talented musicians in Tha Lowlands. It's such a shame they were never played on the radio/tv. Luckily we now have youtube so the rest of the Netherlands (and the world) can 'meet' these wonderful performers (for decades and decades neglected by the mainstream media). Fantastic reaction !

Good response. One of my favorite metal bands is Blind Guardian. The singer of this group (Hansi Kürsch) could be heard here. I recommend Blind Guardian - Wheel Of Time (Power / Symphonic Metal). Unfortunately there is no good live recording for this song. But the studio version is worth listening to.
Arjen is an amazing composer and musician, but he's obviously also a master collaborator. This show is a perfect demonstration of his particular vision as it's essentially a showcase of his Ayreon and other projects. (and yes, one of his favorite weapons is a "Floor bomb" at or near the end of a piece!) Any number from this show is a perfect next step in exploring Arjen-world, and a wonderful freakin avenue to all the assembled talent - and the "Source" albums from which these songs originate. Funny coincidence: today I treated myself to viewing the Ayreon universe show again and you are featuring a song from it! Arjen has a high reputation, and it seems to be easy for him to get all these talented musicians for his projects. For instance, I remember an interview with Simone Simons she was asked what other projects she was planning to do, and she said that Arjen asked her for a new project, and while she didn’t have the time to look into it, she already agreed because at it is from Arjen, it can only be good. Arjen did do major live shows. One is this one “Ayreon universe - best of” and the other one was “Electric castle and other tales”. I suggest you also check out a song from that other show. I think at least one part of why people so readily work with Arjen is that, by all accounts I've heard, he is as humble and charming as he is talented. He has such a sincere appreciation and admiration of everyone's talents, paired with seeming to know exactly how to utilise them, and everyone looks like they just have genuine fun working together on his projects. I've seen a fair few reaction videos with people saying they would themselves leap at the chance to have any role anywhere in anything of Arjen's.

I really wish reactors would react to his older content. Apparently there is alot of red tape and even then they often get flagged and removed :( Universal Migrator 1 and 2 is a great concept. They really all are. I hate that people only react to like 5 percent of his vast catalog. :(
Quite (intentionally) ironic that almost everyone I have seen feels the compulsion to rock out so hard to a line like "Everybody dies!" I mean, how about that songwriting?.. The song is extremely complex to deliver right, but friendly to listen, and it draws us into an anti-Utopian world in the best way... me thinking after it's over: did I just jump and sing along happily (AGAIN) to a chorus about the end of the world? The message must be the one of proverbial "blind leading the blind", but with that positive energy contradicting the words, I like to think of it as a solid middle finger to death - if go out at all, then with a bang! \m/ Off the same album (although you would be well advised to branch out into more AYREON, whichever way you take - the fans will tell you how this or the other song is related to the Universe)... short-term, you might as well enjoy the song "Run! Apocalypse! Run!" where the bunch of protagonists manage to squeak out from their dying planet by a hair's breadth. You will find out all the details on the beautiful lyric video, made for the whole album, which highlights the singers every time their personage appears in the script [this one: th-cam.com/video/vN-kbmQckw8/w-d-xo.html ]. That video presentation - made by a respectful and creative fan - is as close to owning the physical album as one can get. It drew warm congratulations from Arjen himself. Highly recommend Valley of the Queens for some gorgeous harmonies. Then two new videos for the new Star One Album that will be coming out next month, Lost Children of the Universe and Fate of Man. We now have a very nice house in the countryside. With a dog and cats, and my two horses. When we moved into this house, with a huge plot of land around it, I immediately said I wanted horses. That was my girlhood dream.”
You were bullied as a child, you call that a dark period, was being with the horses a way to escape for a while?
“Because we moved often, I was always an outsider. I spoke differently than the children in my class, looked different, was tall. That bullying lasted seven years. My parents often went to school, but there they calmly said that there was nothing they could do. I can still get angry about that, because you actually say: 'Bad luck for you, just figure it out'. I withdrew to my own world, to nature, to the horses. So yes, in a way that was a flight.”
“So was music, by the way. At one point those were the two things I went for. My career choice test also showed equestrian sport and conservatory. I really wanted to go to the conservatory, until I understood that the vocal training was either very classical or jazz. I had nothing to do with either of them. That is why I went to the Equestrian Center Deurne, a horse training course. That was very hard. I ended up there from high school and had to work hard every day. Some muscles in my body had become so hard that the blood flow in my arms was no longer functioning properly. I had a failure in my hands, so bad that I could hardly drive because I let the reins slip out of my hands all the time. It just wasn't fun anymore. When I heard that there was going to be a rock academy, I immediately registered.”
Were your parents surprised that you started doing this?
"I don't think so. I was also involved in musicals at school, so it didn't come out of the blue. I think they have kept their heart, because of course it is very insecure. But they have always been behind me. They said: 'You have a talent, you have to do something with it.' My father plays the guitar and sings. He's more in the blues corner. My sister Irene also sang in a metal band for a while and we also performed together. But I'm the only one in our family who made it her job."
Were you immediately into metal?
“I didn't really like it at all. A friend of mine was listening to it and I thought, what kind of horrible music is that? I was a little late developing my own taste. In the first school band I sang in, we played pop and rock songs. I also really liked grunge, but more to listen to. It wasn't until I moved to Limburg and made friends who listened to different metal bands that I saw the beauty of it. It's not just loud screaming and screeching guitars. The music we make with Nightwish has so many nuances, it's pop, folk, rock, symphonic passages, it's very accessible and melodic. For me, this kind of metal music is the ultimate combination of heavy music, pure feelings and female vocals.”
Metal music is a man's world, do you thrive on that?
“I don't really know any better. I stepped into this life from school. I actually don't realize that I work almost exclusively with men. It works well for me, I like it too. Men are very direct, there is no hassle. I never think: what is your hidden agenda? I do notice, now that I'm getting older, that I miss female company. Just because women look at things differently and that's sometimes a relief when you're only surrounded by men. That's why it was nice that at the time my female friend went along on tour as a nanny. I had very different conversations with her. She also saw when I was not feeling well and immediately asked how I was doing. Men don't ask that quickly, or don't even notice."
By joining 'Best Singers' you hoped that more people would listen to your music. Did that work?
"Yes. Our concerts in the Netherlands were immediately sold out. The nice thing is that it went both ways. A lot of people who listen to my music have also embraced Henk Poort. What I'm especially happy about is that I was able to show that metal isn't just satanic music, sung by screaming angry men."
Do you also think: finally known in the Netherlands?
“Haha. Somehow I like that, stupid huh? It bothered me that we are known all over the world and barely got a foothold in the Netherlands.”

After all these years, people still jump from the chair every time Arjen throws the "Floor bomb" in his songs. She's his Siren, she was featured for the first time in an Arjen song when she was only 16 years old(my house on Mars) and I read somewhere that this song is about to be transmitted from Mars to Earth later this year.

That lady is Magali (Maggy) Luyten (Nightmare). She’s a Belgian female rock singer, vocal coach and voice teacher at MYRIAD VOIC. She played in several local bands before joining forces with the progressive metal band ‘Over Us Eden’ from Aachen, Germany in 2003. She performed guest vocals for different projects, including Ayreon's 01011001. Arjen Lucassen told about her: "I kept bumping into Magali’s name in different bands, and I was so impressed with her voice every time I heard her. I knew I’d like to work with her one day… she is just amazing". She performed live acoustically the song "Ride the Comet" for Ayreon's release party in January 2008 with Floor Jansen and Robert Soeterboek.

Their singing voices are very similar, but their speaking voices are an interesting contrast.
Floor, while perfectly fluent and clear, still has traces of her natural accent. Irene has a very distinct sort of BBC English accent.
We have so many talented musicians in Tha Lowlands. It's such a shame they were never played on the radio/tv. Luckily we now have youtube so the rest of the Netherlands (and the world) can 'meet' these wonderful performers (for decades and decades neglected by the mainstream media). Fantastic reaction !

Good response. One of my favorite metal bands is Blind Guardian. The singer of this group (Hansi Kürsch) could be heard here. I recommend Blind Guardian - Wheel Of Time (Power / Symphonic Metal). Unfortunately there is no good live recording for this song. But the studio version is worth listening to.

Arjen is an amazing composer and musician, but he's obviously also a master collaborator. This show is a perfect demonstration of his particular vision as it's essentially a showcase of his Ayreon and other projects. (and yes, one of his favorite weapons is a "Floor bomb" at or near the end of a piece!)
Any number from this show is a perfect next step in exploring Arjen-world, and a wonderful freakin avenue to all the assembled talent - and the "Source" albums from which these songs originate. Yep, there's tons of both react, and just basic enjoyment, opportunities in this compelling rabbit hole that is Arjen's body of work. Enjoy the trip!

Funny coincidence: today I treated myself to viewing the Ayreon universe show again and you are featuring a song from it!
Arjen has a high reputation, and it seems to be easy for him to get all these talented musicians for his projects. For instance, I remember an interview with Simone Simons she was asked what other projects she was planning to do, and she said that Arjen asked her for a new project, and while she didn’t have the time to look into it, she already agreed because at it is from Arjen, it can only be good.
Arjen did do major live shows. One is this one “Ayreon universe - best of” and the other one was “Electric castle and other tales”. I suggest you also check out a song from that other show. Maybe “Isis and Osiris” th-cam.com/video/Z6YFbgMzkZY/w-d-xo.html
it is a softer song, but also features an interesting lineup of singers.
I think at least one part of why people so readily work with Arjen is that, by all accounts I've heard, he is as humble and charming as he is talented.
He has such a sincere appreciation and admiration of everyone's talents, paired with seeming to know exactly how to utilise them, and everyone looks like they just have genuine fun working together on his projects.
I've seen a fair few reaction videos with people saying they would themselves leap at the chance to have any role anywhere in anything of Arjen's.

I really wish reactors would react to his older content. Apparently there is alot of red tape and even then they often get flagged and removed :( Universal Migrator 1 and 2 is a great concept. They really all are. I hate that people only react to like 5 percent of his vast catalog. :(
I've seen one reactor get away with doing 'The Electric Castle' track by track.
Quite (intentionally) ironic that almost everyone I have seen feels the compulsion to rock out so hard to a line like "Everybody dies!" I mean, how about that songwriting?.. The song is extremely complex to deliver right, but friendly to listen, and it draws us into an anti-Utopian world in the best way... me thinking after it's over: did I just jump and sing along happily (AGAIN) to a chorus about the end of the world? The message must be the one of proverbial "blind leading the blind", but with that positive energy contradicting the words, I like to think of it as a solid middle finger to death - if go out at all, then with a bang! \m/
Off the same album (although you would be well advised to branch out into more AYREON, whichever way you take - the fans will tell you how this or the other song is related to the Universe)... short-term, you might as well enjoy the song "Run! Apocalypse! Run!" where the bunch of protagonists manage to squeak out from their dying planet by a hair's breadth. You will find out all the details on the beautiful lyric video, made for the whole album, which highlights the singers every time their personage appears in the script [this one: th-cam.com/video/vN-kbmQckw8/w-d-xo.html ]. That video presentation - made by a respectful and creative fan - is as close to owning the physical album as one can get. It drew warm congratulations from Arjen himself. The description has a drop-down list of all songs with timings, and you can choose "Run! Apocalypse! Run!" at 33:03... or "Deathcry of a Race" at 57:05 (my personal favorite: God, what emotion, I want to spoil just a little more, but I won't!)... or any other one... or listen to all of 'em. x))) The important thing is: Rock on!
