    A black legion squad was the first models I ever painted and honestly painting the trim was the most fun I had. It might be because I enjoyed the slow pace and I found it very relaxing. I can't wait to do bigger models

    Very good for a quick CSM, especially BL notorious for people who drybrush seven greys to basically no effect

    While painting Bringers of Decay (Black Legion Plague Marines) I dicovered that Valejo Black mixed with a wee bit of Retributor Armor produces a black with a slight worn out look which would look amazing with that paint pen.

    Phil this a much needed tutorial for those of us who are daunted by the more official guides, I’d love to see more of these. Yours looks great with such a reduced amount of effort!

    So glad I found this. I have a squad of chaos marines I want to paint up as Black Legion but for whatever reason, I just can’t do black armour justice. With this method though, I think I could.

    The Black Legion is my first, favorite and largest army. I rarely even call them a CSM army as they will always be Black Legion even if GW gave them the worst rules in all of 40k.
    Your paint scheme is very good and quite efficient. However, I am well into how my paint mine with 66 CSM, 20 Raptors, 10 Warp Talons, 30 Terminators 25 Havocs and hellva lot more stuff in black and gold. So much so, even my Chaos Knights are in Black Legion colors. I am well past feeling any pain about painting gold trim on black models.
    Me, I like Vallejo Black with Vallejo Old Gold trim. As to not favor any Chaos god, I chose white for any cloth goods. I pick out skull and bone with Vallejo Buff to give it a yellowed grungy look. I use Agrax Earthshade which I like how is shades the gold. Ultimately, my Black Legion is a lot darker and desaturated than yours. Which sure, can hide some details at a distance, but I like the effect just the same.
    However, despite the time I put into my Black Legion, I don't think they look much different to yours in quality. That paint pen trick was amazing. Kudos.

    i have good quality airbrush and lots of paints etc, all the guides ive seen for black legion end up look so clean - totally not what i imagine for chaos - at least black legion. i also like too this scheme allows to see the curvature and how the model looks, not lost like in a black hole. im going to use this scheme for mine - heck maybe even my abbadon's black panels - thanks for sharing!

    I actually really like the gray highlights on the black because it looks like a coat of ash covering the armor, which matches the base.

    But so now we get tips how to paint miniatures at a Glacial phase, eh? Can't say I need those. I got that down to near impossible to see speed. :D
    Still haven't paid a single miniature this year. XD

  • @mrphucyoo8281

    Not all paint pens are equal! The sharpie brand go on the mini fine but the gold is awful flat and matt! The metal body pens are the ones you need, also if you go to an art store they have them with different tip/nib size right down to a really fine one!
    Im currently painting 2000 points of black legion!! Not much has changed over last few weeks!

    I’m about to start a Black Legion army this weekend and my first models are going to be Chosen! Question, if I feel like the black is too grey would a second coat of Grim Black solve my issue or would that ruin it? I also thought of using Speedpaint Medium for the second coat of black just to darken it ever so slightly.

    • @iNoxaLicious
      @iNoxaLicious 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Who knows though maybe I have to see it in person and the lighting at the end makes it look more grey than it is.

    • @TheGlacialGeek
      @TheGlacialGeek  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Give one coat a try and if you want it darker you can apply a second coat once it is fully dried. You won't have as pronounced a contrasted effect (since the second coat will bring the highlights closer to the recessed shade) but it won't ruin anything 🙂

    The models and the paint scheme pull a ton of weight. I had my elderly neighbor, who has no idea what 40k is, paint an intercessor and after the armor and gun had a single base he remarked on how good it looked with out a lot done to it. No reason to go over board if you enjoy the game more than painting. This is definitely "battle ready".

    What would u say about priming in gold and paint in black?

    • @TheGlacialGeek
      @TheGlacialGeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I recently saw someone do that in a tutorial and it looked just as frustrating as painting in the trim ... I think the CSM models are going to be some level of frustrating either way, it just comes down to how much control you think you have either with painting trim or around trim.

    • @mrphucyoo8281
      @mrphucyoo8281 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How do I do a black undercoat and a white over coat?

    • @TheGlacialGeek
      @TheGlacialGeek  ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you mean a zenithal highlight with primer, or do you mean how to paint white on black?

    • @TCGfudo
      @TCGfudo ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheGlacialGeek both please

    • @TheGlacialGeek
      @TheGlacialGeek  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For a zenithal prime, you prime the model black then spray white primer or, if using an airbrush, white ink from mostly above to enhance the highlights and the shadows. It then acts to enhance the highlights and shadows when you paint it, especially with translucent paints like Speedpaints or Contrast paints.
      As for painting white over a black prime, it just takes patience. It will probably take a few layers to completely cover it, but it is possible. The other option, especially if you are dealing with predominantly bright colors or white, is to prime the model white.
