    Interesting, however:
The feature is portrayed quite positively, but it fails to paint a comprehensive picture. If the timecode is output through the regular audio jack, you lose the ability to output both audio channels separately, as one channel will be occupied by the timecode signal. While you can synchronize the camera at the beginning as shown in the video, and subsequently record both channels separately, it's important to remember that the camera's timecode might drift over time, and the Blackmagic cameras demonstrated in the video seem to completely forget the timecode after being powered off and on again. Therefore, meticulous attention is required to maintain synchronization.
While some might argue that the camera's audio recordings only serve as a reference, given that the 32-bit float recording is used in the end, it's worth noting that if the onboard audio from the external microphones is already being recorded by the camera, it's just as easy to sync the entire internal and external audio using audio cues in Resolve. In this context, timecode doesn't seem entirely necessary. This brings me to the next point: integrating this system into other timecode setups is not very practical.
Don't misunderstand me; I do see the value and importance of this feature as a step in the right direction. However, it appears that it might not be entirely complete and seamless at this point. Have I missed something?

Sadly the real issue here is that only occasionally jamming doesn’t address drift when matching clips (start in sync and drift out over time). This timecode functionality could be amazing IF the system allowed maintaining full TRRS output capability while the USB allowed an analog LTC output (and separate USB power input), or ideally also allow LTC input to jam the Wireless Pro from the internal camera clock as the master to both allow quick changes of frame rates while in the field, but also to allow use of the battery saving plug-in power control they implemented in this system which otherwise can’t be used when this unit is the master clock.

I had an issue on my blackmagic p4k, but was only after the 32 bit files and syncing later to my ref audio in camera. I found that it was impossible to monitor well because of the TC audio screaming in my ear. The TC def drifts with jam sync and I can't trust it, HOWEVER I found that if I leave the plug connected, the P4K accepted the ext TC and will not drift as long as it's connected. Then I decided to turn off the right channel in camera so that I didn't have to hear the TC modulating through my headphones. I just decided that with the p4k I don't need to burn in TC on the audio channel. As long as the cable is connected, both TX's and the camera files will still write the same TC metadata! Even when you power down, once you boot up, the TC jumps back to keep the RX and camera in sync with the cable connected. Hope that made some sense :)

@@brown2840 That absolutely makes sense 😄, but you do realize it's not as convenient and comprehensive as it could or should be. I've read so many comments from people here who want to invest now because they've been wanting Timecode for a while, but I have to unfortunately say: this device doesn't replace a Timecode Generator for a production that goes beyond what this device offers.
Don't get me wrong, I think the feature is great, and I can imagine many people expecting much more from it than it actually is. The promotional video, in my opinion, communicates something much larger than it truly is.

Looking forward to the next video! A few questions:
    1) is it possible to jam sync multiple Wireless PROs together? Or, more generally, can the Wireless PRO itself be jam synced from an external source?
    2) Can we get a Timecode Mode where the Wireless PRO outputs just the headset mic + timecode to its stereo output? My plan is to use a TRRS splitter cable to separate out the mic input channel, feed a VideoMic NTG into that, and then use the stereo output back into the camera's input. So the camera's output video has VideoMic (left) and timecode (right), and then I combine that with the timecode-striped backup recordings from the transmitters.
    3) Building off #2, it would be great if that functionality was built into its own cable, as a variation of the RODE SC11

I already knew what timecode was, thank you. The lack of detail here is a bit of a concern. I'd also argue that you can't just jam sync your cameras and hope they'll stay in time. You really need timecode continuously connected which is why devices like the Tentacle Sync and the Deity Sync exist. To me the timecode feature is useless if I can't jam sync the RodePro to an external source. I don't want it to be the master clock, I want my audio to be a slave. I'm happy that it will stay in sync as it has a very accurate crystal locked clock inside. Can Rode comment on whether the Rode Pro can be a slave rather than the master?

I need to be able to sync to multiple devices and jamming multiple cameras throughout the day and relying on the internal clock is just not worthy of calling this a timecode enabled device.

The main question for me (and many professionals) is still: can I jam synch timecode into it and use my field recorder as a master clock? Because right now it seems to be the cheapest prosumer solution for wireless audio and If I can record and monitor both transmitters by connecting receiver to my field recorder while they have a 32 bit float backup track recorded internally along with timecode, that would be huge as prices for other such solutions are currently astronomical in some cases

    • @joeunsworth
      @joeunsworth ปีที่แล้ว +1

Fellow 'professional' here also wanting to know if we can jam sync the Wireless Pro with another timecode master device (e.g. Deity TC-1, which I have invested in quite heavily).
The timecode feature in this Wireless Pro is effectively useless on multi-cam sets, most cameras being used by the target audience of this product do not have gear that can be jam synced, and even if they are using cameras that can be, they'll have TC drift to contend with which is not fun. What would have made SO much more sense would be adding integration with something like the Atomos bluetooth TC system, or allowing the Receiver to be jammed with another TC generator/master. If this is indeed possible, then that would be incredible - as you effectively need 2 less TC boxes on set, for the 2x lav recorders.
Let's wait and see what Rode come back with.

The answer is no - they cannot be synchronized with each other. The Wireless PRO cannot accept an incoming timecode to sync to, so you can't connect them together.
However, the WIPRO does use Time of Day timecode. This time is updated when connecting the units to RODE Central. This means if you have two WIPRO systems, and connect the to the same RODE Central (e.g. to your phone at the start of the shoot), then whilst they won't be perfectly synchronized, they will be accurate with each other to within about a second.

Not accurate actually. Timecode has to be supported by the camera itself for Rodes method of "plugging and unplugging". They are using a blackmagic camera which supports timecode jamming. Cameras like the A7sIII, Panasonic S5, Canon R6 or R5 don't support that. Plugging it in and unplugging it doesn't jam the cameras because they don't recognize timecode inputs. Rode isn't saying this and they are promoting this as a timecode solution when in fact, it's not. This is a great wireless transmitter but not a great timecode device. @@daniel_grachev

Unfortunately without a full time LTC output over USB to a standard BNC in addition to a manual level isolated (or all possible audio output modes) output over the TRRS jack makes this effectively useless in any pro environment with a camera that actually has TC. At best this is a solution currently configured for cameras without TC and for sets that aren’t already using TC across cameras. @Rode, please listen to all us pros and give us at minimum full time LTC and isolated channel 1 and 2 output out the available ports with ideally the option to jam the Wireless Pro’s clock input as well (full time auto jam to an input signal). You already have all the capabilities for this (aside from Jam In) as demonstrated by the available modes, it’s just not programmed or implement in firmware.

One thing that this model doesnt have is advanced timecode, since it cant receive timecode from other serves. That means its timecode is isolated from a network of other equipment on a film set that also uses tiimecode. Please, Rode... do the homework. We're not using just one set of mics. That's basic ... for basic users. So, dont say advanced timecode system. It needs to be able to receive, usually via bluetooth, timecode from another server (Even from another rode pro set of mics). I am excited with the 32 bit float capability, but I'm totally disappointed with the timecode feature. The timecode feature of this model was developed by someone with very narrow knowledge in this area. Shameful.

      3. We don't publish a latency spec because it can change depending on a range of factors, but for the GO IIs it is usually described as "mid-single digit miliseconds". It's very low due to a proprietary codec built to reduce latency. You'll find it is significantly lower than that of our competitors in this category.

So hear me out… imagine a firmware update that lets the user turn one of the TX units, if not in use, into a SECOND master clock with matching timecode to output timecode to another camera.
I bought this set excited about the idea, but I realized that I can now sync my 2 lavs, FX3 (jammed from RX), mixpre-3ii (jammed from RX), AND and A7S3 (RX attached outputting audio timecode). Before I couldn’t use timecode at all really, just syncing FX3-MixPre… but the wireless pro is a no brainer since it doubles as a master clock and actually makes timecode something I can use (wedding / event multi cams).
I was looking at the diety TC-1 box, but then imagined having the ability to convert one of the TX units into a timecode box essentially. Not sure if that 3.5mm input can double as an output, or maybe the usb could, but hey that would be a killer feature if someone only needs 1 lav mic, but wants to sync an extra camera! @rode

Yes, these products really should include Bluetooth. Then, you could sync via Bluetooth but more importantly for me, you could connect to them wirelessly and change settings from the app on your phone. This would be extremely useful given the extremely limited buttons and menu on the device themselves. I switched to Hollyland Lark Max for this very reason and bwi g able to change all the 2x Transmitters and 1xreceivers settings from the one menu on the receiver using the touch screen and dial is game changing for this type of system. While I would love timecode (not fussed about 32bit float, 24bit is more than good enough) I just can't go back to Rode's system of having to plug each device into a smartphone or laptop just to change a few settings. I'd suggest Rode make a 'Pro' worthy receiver that had all the features of the current Wireless Pro receiver but had bluetooth and a full menu and dial more like what the Lark Max has. Then I would happily switch back to Rode!! The app would also have to allow multiple Wireless Pro systems being synced from the same phone app so more than two Transmitters and one receiver could all be in sync for multicam jobs.

What those at Rode are demonstrating here for jam syncing multiple cameras definately won't work with the cameras they are using for the demonstration!!

This is cool, but in practice, it really only helps with syncing a single camera to your transmitters’ internal audio. It won’t help with synchronizing multiple cameras together like a Deity TC-1 or Tentacle Sync would. Jam syncing is unreliable on most prosumer cameras. The Panasonic GH6, for example, loses sync the second it’s powered off and needs to be jammed again. Now, if you were to sell a standalone add-on device that could receive timecode from Røde Wireless PRO transmitters, and constantly jam it to a camera, that would be interesting.

Also, I feel it should be said 2 things about jam sync: 1) In general, the internal clock of cameras (even high end ones) is not frame accurate over more than 1 or 2h. And 2) Not all cameras can accept a jam sync. None of the Canon mirrorless accept that for instance. Not even the A7S3 would accept. But the Pocket cameras do…
