    Man, I thought I knew a lot. Now I am thinking about Timecode. I am using two Canon G50 4K cameras and Sling Studio one wired and one wireless using a camera link. Mysteriously they sync up. Other team members are using Yolobox Pro and we are constantly talking audio, syncing, device powering off and software auto-switching to a non-prefered audio source, etc. So this helps t=me to have a idea how to sync. I am assuming you can use audio to input Timecode into Tentacle Sync. What if I don't want to record timecode on a prime camera, and use that as the master audio track? So now I have more research to do so I don't sound unprepared when I suggest this solution.

      this is due to crappy blue tooth technology (which is not time accurate) and the display app on the phone. If you were to bring in the media and compare, you would find them all exactly in sync. Going by the app is not accurate to the frame, due to timing and latency of the blue tooth spec

  • @darrengeorge8506

    So let me get this str8. If a device can receive the timecode - jammed to it once and then unplug the tentacle and the device will continue keeping the time code? So if I have a device that can maintain timecode like a C300 or a Zoom, once I jam that timecode and unplug it, the timecode will stay in sync? So if I'm understanding correctly, that would mean that if I had three C300s and one tentacle, I could jam the timecode to all three of the cameras? Which means I would only need one tentacle in this usage scenario?

I see that the Zoom recorder generates timecode and you could use it as the master clock (source) and use Tentacle Sync as the slave, would there be an advantage of doing timecode with your recording generating it? Its too bad popular cameras like gopros, insta360 x3, drones, and high end phones cant figure out a lower budget way to timecode without losing their audio. I started searching for options today and this is probably the "best" solution, but its still kind of messy and very expensive. A lot of people on TH-cam are using multi cameras now so I figured the need was there. I know a lot of youtubers with high subscriber counts still use iphones. In particular in this process, I was surprised you needed tentacle software to line things up and cannot just use premiere.
    I envisioned a device you put near each camera when you start recording that puts out a sound based on a time of day and you could just hold it up each time you start a new clip. If someone else was filming that would buy another one and those 2 would just need to be synced to each other... then each person would have one to put near their cameras as they start a clip.

    This is the best video of Tentacle that I've seen. SOOOOO question then based on what I saw here. I have : RED Dragon, Black Magic Pocket and Zoom 4 ... so based on this I just need ONE tentacle sync to sync them all up with the BNC cable right?

    • @bsetter
      @bsetter 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Geoff Heith well thanks for your kind words. In theory yes you are correct however the BM may reset timecode if you power down the camera, so you’d have to resync after that. Generally a good rule of thumb is to double check timecode is still in sync if you power off your cameras if your timecode isn’t always attached.

      @@bsetter Just added the new Atomx Sync to my Atomos Ninja V. Atomos recently purchased TCS (the maker of the UltraSync One and Blue devices and the ones who engineered this Atomx component to plug into your Ninja V recorder. It does RF and Bluetooth, but has no BNC or other connection options. So curious, if you know if the Sync E devices can join the bluetooth network that the Ninja V's Atomx Sync creates when it is master? Or what would be the technique to getting Ninja V Sync devices TC onto a Tentacle Sync E device. I ask, because my alternative is to purchase the Atomos UltraSync One at $280 each, PLUS they don't give you cables any more like TCS used to, so I would have to be a $40 Din to BNC cable so I could Jam my Zoom F4 and a $62 Din to 3.5mm cable to do LTC to my backup camera (without a Ninja V). Then, I would also have to buy a $150 license to use LTC Convert, since Premiere still doesn't sync LTC files. So, really it would be $280 + $40 + $62 + $150 or $532 for one UltraSync One solution. Surely there is a way to jam TC from the Atomos Sync to a Tentacle Sync E? The camera that will be attached to the Ninja V will be a A7SIII and my backup camera is a Sony A9. Thanks in advance :-)

    Great video. Thank you. I just wondered if anyone had experienced tentacle syncs laying timecode as audio onto both of a DSLR’s camera audio tracks? I’ve had this problem which means there is no longer any onboard camera mic audio on one of the tracks which isn’t very helpful…it’s nice to have at least one camera audio track as a dialogue track just in case the timecode audio track doesn’t work for any reason…anyone else experienced this problem?

    If you're using a TC to jam devices throughout the day and it goes OFF after a couple of hours (like you mentioned around 10:00) does the timecode persist, or does it reset?

    • @bsetter
      @bsetter 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      amndemo the tentacle sync has like 30hours of battery life but if you are jamming timecode from a tentacle sync only temporarily to a device that is not continually connected your tentacle sync. When that camera or device powers off (say dead camera battery) you may have to res jam timecode again after powering back up. Again only if your tentacle syncs is not continuously connected (ie using one tentacle sync for multiple devices).

    That was a great run down of what thoese little timecode generators do. It's unfortunate they cost so much, $280 per unit, any prosumer camera over $800 like a Canon Vixia HF G21 will have timecode options. The vixia HF 100 to 800 series do not, they cost around $220 new. I feel for the extra few hundred you're gonna spend on a tentacle sync device, you may spend that towards an entry-level prosumer camera even getting XLR inputs for the cost difference.
    The technology is great, just priced to high in my opinion.

    How slaves communicate each with other? By Bluetooth?
    Do you need synchronise slaves next day (after switch off of master) ?
    How many slaves can be connected to master tentacle?
    Another solution:
    If zoom F4 have already time base, how to use it like master? How to connect slaves to Zoom F4? Only with cables?
    Excuse me my questions. But I would better understand.

    • @SetterStudios
      @SetterStudios  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s not a master to slave relationship. Using the tentacle sync app on your phone syncs all of the devices to a common time mark and frame rate. They will remain in sync as long as you don’t turn them off. I would always resync the next day, they only have something like 20 hours of battery. I typically jam timecode from one of the tentacles to my Zoom F6. Treat the group of synced tentacles as one collective timecode source for any devices you connect them to.

      @SetterStudios  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Zack Trunzo awesome question and thanks for watching! Unfortunately the GH5 doesn’t have a way to merry the internal timecode clock with any other devices. The only real way to use timecode internally on the GH5 is to synchronize timecode using the Panasonic app on the iPhone but that never gets timecode into your audio recorder so you end up still kinda stuck leaving one device out of the timecode “universe” so to speak. Your 3 cameras may be in synced that way but the audio recorder has no way to merry to the timecode the GH5 is generating.

      @@SetterStudios Just added the new Atomx Sync to my Atomos Ninja V.

      The sync software that comes with the Tentacle Sync E can export as XML.

    awsome thx! But what if I change the framerate during a day of shooting on one of the cameras for example: Synced framerate to the cameras and fieldrecorder 50p - change to 120p for some slowmo. Does the timecode stay when I go back to "normal/synced" framerate or do I have to sync all devices again? Further, if I load the footage to post: The clip with the 120 frames would need more "space" to the other clips (Cam 2 & fieldrecorder)

    • @SetterStudios
      @SetterStudios  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Timecode is frame rate dependent. So you would need to change your timecode frame rate to match. You *may* be able to do this with BMPCC button that switches to high frame rate but leaves the project frame rate at 23.98. You would want to test before you commit to this plan.

    How do you use a 3.5 mic when time code cable is using up the port? A splitter? Thanks for help

    • @topdazzle
      @topdazzle 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You wouldn't - your audio instead comes from your audio recorder and external mics - the timecode syncs all of this up for you with your video. If you're plugging a mic directly into the camera (using single-system audio) then you don't need timecode as there's nothing to sync up.

    How do you handle timecode with multiple takes. Say your doing a music video with a band and they are playing along to some music. how do you get the time code to sync with a music track so every time you play the track the time code will be the same for each take.

    • @SetterStudios
      @SetterStudios  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a really good question! There is no way to line up 3 takes of the song to match using timecode. Timecode is continually running forward in time allowing you to sync all cameras and audio sources. You would still want to use timecode to do that part but you would want to feed a click track audio source to the band and your audio recorder so the song takes can be synced to each other forcing the band to play each take exactly in time one to the next. You would need to use a click track synced with the musicians to do that.

    Does turning the cameras on or off screw up the timecode on the camera? Like, if you need to change batteries and such, does that throw everything off? Or as long as the transmitter stay plugged in is it fine?

    • @SetterStudios
      @SetterStudios  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as the Tentacle sync is plugged in turning on/off the camera won't be effected. BUT if you are only temporarily tapping timecode to your camera then turning on/off will pause timecode.

    Great explanation. Let's say I have an FS5 that shows up to a shoot and needs sync. If I carry my own one of these and get sync from the recorder, what would the post department have to do as far as getting the tentacle software? Can it be downloaded for free if you haven't purchased the actual device?

    • @bsetter
      @bsetter 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's either adding audio timecode to devices without timecode sync input OR its adding timecode directly to devices with timecode sync. So all your post department needs is the ability to sync timecode or embedded audio timecode. Most software can do that.

    • @GarretGrayCamera
      @GarretGrayCamera 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bsetter Thanks for getting back to me. That's great to know I can use this this to embed the timecode and hand off the footage and they can sync my stuff to their audio. Probably a little grumble from the editor as it'll take an extra step or two. That'll help out alot. What a great little gadget.

    Tentacle sync is a very nice device but absolutely overpriced, but you can find for renting quite easily.

      exactly what TC solution have you found that is cheaper? I'm used to TC costing several hundred each into the thousands, and being bigger. The TCS, Nano, and others are all similarly priced. Just curious what you mean by overpriced
