Would like to thank MCM outdoors for getting me back out Chris, lost my left leg 6 years ago due to military life participation, your channel has got me back out, I've learnt to adapt with my new leg and done a few solo camps, not to bore you lads but thanks, I'm always watching, you've been a massive help 👍
Bryce Sir Your also an inspiration and believe me your comments have not gone unnoticed🙏 We all think we have issues with later life creeping in and Hospital Procedures or Limb injuries but nothing could compare from actually losing a limb,I thought a full Hip replacement and knee reconstruction on the same leg was bad enough for me but Kudos to you Sir for your Military contribution and Injury sustained.God Bless you and Being positive but also just getting on with it speaks Volumes. MCM Videos certainly cheer everyone up and As Always Chris definitely knows how to do that👍🥾⛺️
Brilliant showing us the truth and not covering up your concern. I think it’s heartening for the rest of us that very experienced people face the same doubts and decisions. No criticism here. I’m grateful for you allowing us to learn from your experiences.
Great video Chris doesn't matter how long you've been at it there are still lessons to be learned as long as your both safe and well no harm which makes it all the more rewarding 💪💪👍🏴
Well that was a good camp that could have went very badly. I'm glad for you guys that it didn't. I did learn something,. I learned to always think ahead to what could possibly happen where my shelter is set up because ya never really know how it's gonna go Dwayne
Belter video mate, terrible conditions sometimes make the best memories though , we almost drowned in our tents in the Brecon Beacons one year, one of my favourite camps ever, top laugh.
Gutted for you both that you got no sleep lads, I can imagine the night just went in forever. Poor Matt outside, it must have felt like an eternity. Great to see inside that cave mate, class that. Glad your both ok.
Camped on a bank on the base of the Waterfall on whernside during storm desmond. 2 hours after pitching the river had gone from a stream to a raging 10ft wide river with it about to sweep our tents away. We were also cut off on the ledge. We had to climb off the ledge above us and trek across thick undergrowth crossing repeated brooks flowing into the main river each pretty much waist deep. To finally find a bridge to cross the river back to the cars several hours later. Had to then wake the wife in the early hours to let me in. Our mistake was to camp where we thought we'd be out of the wind.
Great vid an the only way you learn is by past mistakes well wouldn't really call it a mistake coz you learn from it an it's the only way to learn as that fear of the brook bursting will stay wit you forever as it's always something you will clock now when you get somewhere but it shows how easy done it is but glad you are both ok ⛺⛺⛺❤❤❤
Glad you both stuck it out. It’ll be a good one to talk about over a pint. You just never know how the weather is going to be, but a great adventure all the same 👍
Acht like a summers day in Scotland 😅 These are the camps you never forget , I remember a scout camp in the early 90's being woke up wandering why my feet felt wet , the river had burst its banks and was running through our 6 man Icelandic tent, I still laugh about it to this day. 😀
Belter mate, great to be part of live convo the other day aswell. Haze will find your skeletal remains and "medic!" Keep it up lads and stay safe out there
Great video guys. I'm tired of watching camping video's where I have to spend 20 minutes watching someone cook a chop... Your videos are informative, educational and entertaining - that's exactly what I want. Greetings from Dublin.

(Matt Sir you’ve been missed and gone too long🙏) all we need is Walshy back out amongst it and that will set up Summers MCM trips. Chris and Matt again thanks for the Time and effort doing your Bit for the MCM outdoors army and long May it continue👍⛺️🥾 Simply Superb as always🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Glad you both stuck it out and survived the night. Some exciting stuff there and some useful learnings. That tunnel was interesting. I expect it's an old VC tunnel. Legend has it that there are still soldiers hiding out in those hills that don't realise the war is over 🤪
You won't forget this one. 👍😂. Same happened to me some years go but with no leak on my TN Quasar. Just seam sealed my new Tarptent moment for a few days trek around the Lakes.
Cracking video Chris. Pre-vid too. We all know the weather conditions can change very quickly, without much warning. We all suffer from a little too much complacency as well. Lesson well and truly learned. Absolutely positive you will be better prepared going forward. Treat it as a reset. Still a great watch. Certainly reminded me to pack for every eventuality the season can throw at you. Thanks.🍺
Happens to the best of us mate. I got caught in a lightning storm this weekend as well and had to bail. You both did well. Nobody got hurt and every experience is a new bit of learning. Brilliant video and very honest. Respect 👍
Hey bro, don't let it get you down, as long as you learnt from it, it's a success, and ultimately toughen you up for harsher camps and challenges. Great little video, and tell your mate to bin the poncho and get himself an old army basha, 100% Waterproof and 👍
Love the vid guys.I think when a tree gets hit by lightning it flash boils any moisture/sap inside which turns the tree into a grenade.Hope this helps.Stay safe to all fellow rough campers out there.
I'm impressed to see you stuck it out and didn't bottle it like I would have done. I'm pleased to see you both got through it ok, albeit rather damp! I'm off to buy you a coffee to warm you up :)
Thanks mate - the video didn't do it justice at all - the rainfall rate was extreme and hit out of nowhere! Matt's camp flooded in second, we got him set up again but it was tough. All good fun and a great adventure! ATB 👌👍
Lightening usually goes for the highest tree not any random one...In the Slovenia they always build houses next to linden trees in the mountains because they act as natural lightening conductors...or rather they used to before modern lightening conductors and they also smell incredible when they blossom.
Nice shirt mate! Out clubbing to the club called storm? The weather always adds to the video so well done for sticking it out and showing people how quickly calm and safety can change to stress and danger.
The way I see it is - life is about experience, you learn when things go wrong, you'll look back & laugh & remember that time, you won't if it was another episode of emmerdale in the house 😉
Great vid, good learning point to think about what if the conditions change at a camp site will think that next time i camp. Looking forward to seeing how to seam seal a tent. Perhaps you could show the weather apps you use as well.
Thanks for watching Nick - I have to say, I got lazy and forgot to predict how the camp might change if conditions changed - so great learning experience there! Seam sealing video coming soon - ATB, Chris
Brilliant video....where the hell do you guys park your car when you go off hiking? The car parks won’t allow overnight parking so I’m guessing you randomly find a spot and just leave it, I guess. I’m off to Cleveland way and I’m hoping to find anywhere in filey to leave my car for 7 days, any tips anyone?
we never stop learning mate, I still make stupid decisions when tired etc and in hindsight think duh what was you thinking adam but it's always easier in reflection when you're back home. all part of the adventure and fun. Pendel Hill billy pmsl probably more chance than seeing a witch
Mate, that looked rough, and hardcore. Well done for sticking it out. I was on Scotland having a beer outside when we got caught in it, within seconds we were soaked, and water was flooding the streets. My phone is now broke. That was an unpleasant experience, but nothing compared to you and Matt. Glad you can laugh about it. Great watch again.
Sounds like you experienced a bad storm too, was certainly memorable being out in that and in amongst the catchment area! Hope your phone gets sorted mate, ATB
Great video, on a side note a double ipa is a higher grain bill hence higher ABV a DDH beer is double dry hopped which gives a lot of flavour to IPA and NEIPA( new England ipa 🍺
Great video Chris! Me and my 10 year old did our first wild camp up Pendle on Saturday, we had a great time. Thanks for all the content, we love watching it! Maybe see you out there one day.
Really enjoyed that video mate. As a river engineer/geek, the flat area you were on would clearly be defined as flood plain, but that said where you are there is a very short steep catchment, it may get out of bank sometimes but I think the whole area would have to be already saturated before the storm hit. The opposite bank looks active with some small slips so it may need there to be a fresh slip partially blocking the channel for it to get out of bank.
Thanks for the interesting info - has definitely helped jog the thinking for future camps and how the weather can affect them. I guess even a storm far upstream, can ultimately flood a camp much lower down even though the weather there seems fine. Spent the whole night awake and checking the level every half an hour 😂 thanks for watching!
We're learning as we go too ! Spent some time in the last 3 - 4 years checking out places to retire to and spent a week in Hebden Bridge ,Yorkshire in a house that backed on to the river which has flooded more than once recently. Also checked out Shrewsbury which is in a loop of the river Severn and we realized that any potential location we looked at needed to be nowhere near a river. We wouldn't have factored that in to our equation until we saw the severe flooding at Hebden Bridge the following year that we stayed there and i would guess that we're all having to adapt to the changing weather patterns ? We're now hoping for property development on Ben Nevis or Snowdon. Matts foray in to the world of caving and speleology was interesting but he might do well to have his eyes tested as he could be left with tunnel vision ? Probably an early Neolithic Cryotunnel used to keep mammoth sarnies fresh for wild campers back in the days before lightweight folding chairs were invented.
Unlucky Chris, shit happens and you've got to deal with it and looks like you both did 👍 Can't believe Matt slept under a poncho bivvy, credit to him, thanks for sharing ATB Phil 👍
Must have been scary! We’ve camped by a little stream on Exmoor before and it turned into a raging torrent that kept rising and it was quite frankly terrifying! Great vid as always and glad you were both ok. X
Already appreciate your honesty at the start. We are all learning. Edit: just realised you are on my local moors lol. That's an old lead mine. Loved this video. Incidentally, that Brook was engineered to capture all the water off the surrounding moors to transport down to the reservoirs further down. Bad luck on the flash flooding.
Literally caught between the devil and the deep blue… to bale or not too pale. We’ll played for sticking it out. You’re a better man than me Gunga Din. Matt has got some bottle going deep into that cave. I’d have stayed firmly outside like you.
Do you watch "plodders lost" on here Chris? Great channel imo, he's a Scouser like yourself, if you don't, have a look, his "plodders lockdown" video is especially funny but he's done some serious walks and enjoy a drink, top man I think!
So near England, proud but not gutted for a change, footy does that😗 Plodders lost is a proper English philosopher for me, he goes out on walks most wouldn't, he looks at it all with a "see what happens" attitude. I rate the man highly, a good liverpudlian, he has all the attributes of a Scouser but breaks the rules by being a true nature lover and openly shows it, rather than playing the stereotype. He's great, and loves our country, and he seems to have chosen Yorkshire, my county as his favourite. You can always get a good pint in God's own county, he knows it.... top man, he's an adopted Yorkshireman in my book!!
Good video & life lessons about "PACE" planning & backup equipment (which so many folk ignore to reduce weight, at rescuers' risk). I don't normally do long intros, but on this occasion it was valid. I wild camped with a newbie in a hurricane a few years back. That was a life lesson, & reiterated to me how invaluable hammocks are to keeping dry, as long as you've set the tarp right, & used quality (not necessarily most expensive) gear (tarp & cordage) & used proper guy line knots & anchoring. You live in my locale, hopefully get to meet / wild camp with you one day...though with new Police, Crime, Sentencing & Courts Bill going through, wild camping will be criminalised (so it's our duty to object & instruct our MPs to resist, which I've done - but Marie Rimmer acts with impunity...FOR NOW, I've learned how to tie a hangman's noose for her conviction).
Brilliant and I mean that in a glad yous are safe way,..the cave not on your nelly matt has balls of steel, the weather Holy sh*t monsoon scary but yous stayed pretty calm considering chris great video cheers .......p.s miami vice called tubbs wants his shirt back 🤣all the best chris stay safe👍🏕🌧
Know what you are saying about the rain and wet campsites. I cheat , I use a Jungle Hammock and have had more then one campsite flood on me. The nice thing is it has never reached the bottom of the hammock. If that ever happens then I'm in trouble. One trip was 12 days with rain 11 and 1/2 of those days , constant rain. Best thing to do is to smile and consider it ( the rain ) free fresh water to drink. Rain I don't mind , lighting I do not like and I'm in whats considered the lighting capital of the United States , Florida. ( As I type this , it's raining outside )
@@MCMOutdoors Aye, sorry long day so forgot you'd said that. I keep thinking I'd love to camp in the rain, so far been lucky on wild camps, but then I think about how it can turn nasty.
It wasn't too bad, as the inner fabric is slightly water resistant anyway, but as it was concentrated in one spot, for a very long time, it began to compromise that part of the inner. Luckily I take a little towel so just kept blotting it.
@@MCMOutdoors I used "Gear Aid Seam Grip +SIL Silicone Tent Sealant - £10 from "Climbers-shop.com" comes with a little brush. This product was previously known as SilNet. Just incase this is helpful - but you probably have it all covered - regards mate.

Unlucky Chris, shit happens and you've got to deal with it and looks like you both did 👍 Can't believe Matt slept under a poncho bivvy, credit to him, thanks for sharing ATB Phil 👍
Was a good one mate, thanks for watching! I do like the extreme ones 🌊👍
Must have been scary! We’ve camped by a little stream on Exmoor before and it turned into a raging torrent that kept rising and it was quite frankly terrifying!
Great vid as always and glad you were both ok. X
Was great fun Karen, thank you for watching.
Time to use the inner Scouse force on these ones lad! I've deffo had a few of them! Well done though.
All good fun, thanks for watching.
Thanks for the info mate - was a good experience though!
@MCMOutdoors It looked fun! 99% of the time you'd be fine there. I mountain bike down that trail sometimes. Sketchy! 🤣
Literally caught between the devil and the deep blue… to bale or not too pale. We’ll played for sticking it out. You’re a better man than me Gunga Din. Matt has got some bottle going deep into that cave. I’d have stayed firmly outside like you.
Definitely wasn't going into that cave - thanks for watching Alan
Do you watch "plodders lost" on here Chris? Great channel imo, he's a Scouser like yourself, if you don't, have a look, his "plodders lockdown" video is especially funny but he's done some serious walks and enjoy a drink, top man I think!
I'll check that out mate - thank you!
So near England, proud but not gutted for a change, footy does that😗
Plodders lost is a proper English philosopher for me, he goes out on walks most wouldn't, he looks at it all with a "see what happens" attitude.
You could of definitely gone "out out" in that shirt lol.....great vid mate.
🤣 Thanks for watching Glenn
Have you had your hille out In weather like that mate and if so how did she perform?
Not in such bad rain mate, but I'm some tough windy winter conditions.
Dammed if you do, dammed if you don't situation. If you bailed, heading down in the dark could have been worse.
Still, all a learning curve.
Just a reminder re thinking ahead. ATB
Thanks for watching pal - a hammock would have been a great option for this scenario - ATB 👍
“… and then it just kidnaps yer” 😂
It does, headlock from behind and you're off!
@@MCMOutdoors almost spat my Elvis Juice out when you said that mate! Seriously, my favourite video of yours so far, great work documenting 👍
Glad it raised a smile! Catch you on the next one! 👍
Haha, thanks for watching Gary, was a good laugh. ATB
HELLO.
That's the beauty of hammocks mate 👍
Brilliant content. Just wondering - what type of camera do you use for these types of videos?
Gopro and Canon M50 mate
That looks like an old coffin level of a mine that never went far.
Only thing about spots like this unless its -degrees midgies will be ruthless
Yeah, that's the thing Terry. Roll on Autumn and Winter!
It being humid should have been a warning about thunder. Live and learn though.
Thunder was forecast all along, I said that at the start of the video 👍 thanks for watching.
@@MCMOutdoors Aye, sorry long day so forgot you'd said that.
I keep thinking I'd love to camp in the rain, so far been lucky on wild camps, but then I think about how it can turn nasty.
Why is the water not drinkable just wondering
You could do with a filter mate, it's prob a bit too low level maybe though IMHO
The same happened to me last year, watch my Edale camp from last year mate.
Thanks for watching Wayne, certainly a rough night 🌩️
Matthew then went to work?!..F! everything else that's hardcore mate...
Tough stuff here on MCM mate 😁👍🏕️
Does he test beds for a living 🤣🤣🤣🤣
P.S. was that your old man's shirt?
🤣
No such thing as failure only feedback
Absolutely agree
What a video! Chris out of interest did your inner tent get very wet mate?
It wasn't too bad, as the inner fabric is slightly water resistant anyway, but as it was concentrated in one spot, for a very long time, it began to compromise that part of the inner. Luckily I take a little towel so just kept blotting it.
@@MCMOutdoors I used "Gear Aid Seam Grip +SIL Silicone Tent Sealant - £10 from "Climbers-shop.com" comes with a little brush. This product was previously known as SilNet. Just incase this is helpful - but you probably have it all covered - regards mate.
Got some mate, I'm gonna wait for a clear few days then crack on with it!
