    It seemed several people camped out in storm Arwen with different outcomes. Here is my version of events camping out on the summit of Great End in the Lake District National Park. Great End is a beautiful mountain standing at 910m with views over Great Gable and Scafell Pike. I chose this mountain to camp on because it has a fairly easy walk down to safety on the south side which would have been more sheltered from the storm front which was coming from the North. I know the area well and felt it a safer option than what I originally planned in Snowdonia, being Glyder Fawr. I packed my equipment meticulously ensuring I had all necessary items for Blue and I to safely camp out in storm conditions. Although my tent broke because of the high wind speeds it didn’t fail me as throughout I felt completely safe within. I chose to stay safe within the warmth of my equipment and tent rather than increase the risks by attempting to escape the mountain. It was an epic night and a real ‘in the field’ test of my equipment which all served me well and kept me well within my comfort zone.
    Please take care of yourselves and make sure you have the right equipment to suit the conditions, risk assess completely to suit your own experiences, abilities and comfort zones and enjoy your adventures safely.
    All love
    Al and Blue

    Hello Alan and Blue. Another exciting adventure that was beautifully filmed and very atmospheric but so big on excitement. I think it was a worthwhile thing to do even if it's not one to be repeated on purpose. You now know the 'test to destruction limit' of your tent and that your other kit will keep you alive and even reasonably comfortable in extreme conditions. Also, having done this under (more or less) controlled conditions you now know the drill if it happens to you when you don't want it to. The other thing learned is that the Abisko can be used in the winter but it is not a real four season tent. It would need to be free standing of at least semi-geodesic or preferably geodesic design with a snow skirt or apron to prevent the ingress of snow under the fly sheet that you experienced. Especially given that the snow could have been a lot worse. A gas stove detached from the gas canister with a pre-heat loop to vaporise the fuel would be wise at low temperatures and also taking the fuel container into your sleeping bag to keep it warm. Or, use meths in a Trangia bottle that you can keep warm beside you without fear of it spilling. The old Whisperlite stoves are great because they vaporise fuel and can blast out a flame at high pressure even when you're low on fuel but I wouldn't use one inside a tent that was smaller than the Albert Hall. I hope this doesn't sound too preachy, it's just meant to be a few constructive thoughts. More power to you for being brave enough to try. I would be very interested to see you review a real four season tent designed for extreme conditions if you could lay your hands on one - the are b....y expensive though.

    • @BUSHMANandBLUE
      @BUSHMANandBLUE  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If the tent was double poled which it is designed to I think it would have helped but definitely a snow skirt is needed. These tents can weigh a lot though. I have a couple of 4 season stoves but the one I used works well up to what I’ve tested it which is -8. It flared because I overfilled the gas canister nothing to do with weather. I’ve done it a few times but don’t learn😂. I hope people have an idea of at least this one survival technique if they ever get caught out in a storm… staying put. I need another tent to test next!😬 thanks pal.

    Absolutely brilliant Al - And Blue of course!!! This is a really vital video along with Chris' MCM video during the same storm (I'm sure there are others out there too). They should be ESSENTIAL VIEWING IMHO! I'll be out in 50mph winds soon in a lighter weight Hilleberg, but hope to get a Soulo.. but if there's one (of many things!) I've learnt from these videos, its that have the best kit you can for sure, plan meticulously and have pians B, C, D and E sorted as even the best gear in the World can and does fail. But most importantly what you hammered home brilliantly is the importance of remaining calm and knowing how to stick it out up to 3 days as you said if necessary. Being an optomist can keep you alive, but a good dose of pessimism in the planning stage is a good equal!

    Hi,Al! The Great End area is absolutely beautiful. Thanks for this video. I've read through The Storm Arwen debate, but what better spot to stay away from falling trees, flying debris/trampolines, and coastal dangers?(lol) ANYWAY... you had contingency plans, know the area well, planned and packed meticulously, had a fairly easy escape route on the S. side picked out, had biveys for you and Blue, were prepared to ditch any unnecessary gear if needs be, could have used the rock summit shelters or gone down to the Sprinkling Tarn to get out of the worst winds.(not sure how far away the car park is) It sounds like you planned well enough that no mountain rescue team would be needed.You've stressed the importance of having the proper kit, knowledge, and experience to undertake this camp, and you included both written and verbal warnings to the inexperienced. I trust your abilities, but wouldn't trust many in the same situation. ATB

    • @BUSHMANandBLUE
      @BUSHMANandBLUE  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well Bill thank you for completely understanding the whole situation and having a considered approach before writing. Your message completely describes why I remained calm and safe throughout. I haven’t watched any news at all since Christmas (I don’t think I’ve missed anything) but by the sounds of all the dangers at lower levels I had a relatively safe storm experience which I was prepared for but many weren’t and were caught out. As I replied to Paul M’s negative comment (he deleted it afterwards) I was safe and gaining experience but come a survival situation he would trust me but I wouldn’t trust him.
      Thanks again.

    • @BUSHMANandBLUE
      @BUSHMANandBLUE  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      There wasn’t a chance I’d need them if I stayed still. The only danger is the cold but we were both boiling. I was actually sweating. If something drastic happened with the tent then I would still be warm in my bivvy in the summit shelter. Moving would increase my chances of injury so quite simply stay still and keep warm until it passes. You’d be fine for 3 days like that. I had enough food and water. Thanks pal.

  • @garethwiseman94
    @garethwiseman94 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    for the whole video I was worried for Blue (despite knowing he was ok and if anything was to happen to you he would have been ok ) but you forget how hardy collies are and the wind hardly effects them being so low to the ground and him just wanting to play as soon as he was out of the tent shows how awesome they are. It does show though how much the right kit and more importantly experience are key because like you said it would have been an easy and a wrong decision to bail when the pole broke. im sure Quintcraft will be able to fix the sleeve though and easy enough to get a new pole. Glad you both got down ok though that said

    • @BUSHMANandBLUE
      @BUSHMANandBLUE  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Great video. Very brave to be out in that. I did have a tent collapse in strong winds (not nearly as strong) on a scout mountain leader training event on the side of Cader Idris. That happened because we were camping on a bog and the pegs came out. Happened in the morning so we were able to quickly pack up, have some breakfast and head back. Bent pole easily replaced and tent usable again. It was a taller tent than the other tents which survived. Now have a smaller Tera Nova tent. Also got a very obedient dog. I really enjoyed your video and seing your experience. It definitely takes some effort and resilience to do this and then film as well along the way. It was great that you looked after Blue so well and he seemed more than happy to be out in such conditions. I have always wanted to get measured wind speeds like that but now for my own reasons I would not venture out on a summit like this with such a forecast. 10 years ago I would definitely have been up for it for sure. Nice touch dropping the tent to make it lower. I have a fair amount of experience camping but would not have thought of that one. When It comes to tents though what can I cay and there will always be a debate on this one. I wouldn't have taken this tent. You either are a Hilleberg person or you are not. The Akto for example has a toggle to stop the door opening in conditions such as these. It also has 30d fabric instead of 20d on the Abisko and a very easy option to double pole or use a 10mm pole which many users do and take advantage of with few reported problems, apart from leaking zippers in heavy rain.. But to be honest I wouldn't have taken the Akto either as in my opinion it too would have been at its limit. I too was out but only on the coast that night to get a video for my channel in a very exposed location. Wind gusts here were recorded at 87mph (82 forecast) by the met office less than a mile from where I was. My Hilleberg Soulo BL took it no problem at all to be fair. I could only record 50.4. MPH but wasn't able to stand out for long measuring as I was getting blasted with salt water spray. So its still a bit subjective and there are many many considerations for a trip like this but surely the choice of shelter is one of the most important.. ATB and great that you lived to fight another day. Keep up the excellent content. Tom

Learned a lot from your video re: secure tent pitching in high winds, snow ingress, using a bivi, gear/clothing choices and just staying calm; not panicking and enjoying the adventure. How did you manage to get 4 hours kip in that???
    You're blessed with a great dog and he's blessed with a great owner.
    All the best, about to watch it all over again!
    Cheers.

    Growing up in these >80+ into 100+ MPH winds with some regularity in all seasons... it's still an awesome force, and an amazing feeling to be out and about in. It always surprises me in those high force knock ya down and roll ya winds, how it seams to blow right past your nose and mouth before you can suck in a breath. Whether at work or play in these conditions... It takes your breath away rippin' past your face before your mouth can scoop a gulp! When working in the Arctic dark of winter... this wind violence, drifting snow/ice, at way below zero exposure is incredibly dangerous. Sound judgment, skill-set, comfort zone, planning/sequencing, communication, and proven Arctic gear are paramount.

      Sorry there's no way in England we would experience 80 mph winds plus. I was on kinder scout today got a reading of 53mph I'm 18 stone it thrown me around like a rag doll felt like I was getting hit by a train and a crushing fealing , no tent would ever survive a 55mph plus wind. I upload a vlog for everyone to see the power of 53mph

    Hey up Al,
    It was great to bump into you and Blue on the way down on Saturday. Completely agree, it was a beautiful morning to be out on an adventure.
    Recognised Blue straight away leading the route down. lol.
    We didn't manage an awful lot higher after bumping into you. Staying on your feet with the slippy ice and strong winds wasn't the easiest but had so much fun.
    Fortunately good equipment and plenty of experience helps know how far we can push things.
    I pushed my friends who were with me to start following your channel. Hopefully I'll bump into you again soon and it'll be easier to chat when were not getting battered by the wind.
    Great video, keep them coming.

      Ey up mate! It was good to see that you guys were dressed appropriately. After I saw you I met be a few couples walking up in jeans, leggings and trainers with no kit! I had to warn them of the dangers as they could have had serious problems. One couple were aiming to get to Scafell pike! Complete madness. I convinced them to not.
      Cheers though and might see you out there again! 👍👍👍

    Great video although some obviously disagree . I personally think it’s good to see how an experienced wild camper deals with this type of extreme weather condition, having been caught out my self with much higher winds than forecast on a wild camp. Without videos like this it’s hard to know what people do in this situation.The video shows people to stay calm and helps educate in staying safe when out wild camping . Keep the videos coming 👍

      Thank you! That is exactly right! Most TH-camrs will encourage people to get out but none show how to survive when they get caught out. It happens a lot too. I’m glad you appreciate that message mate👍👍👍👊

    I like the text at the beginning of the film. It gives context and reminds me that our limits and boundaries vary. I don't do things now that I used to do without thinking. It's managing the risk. You will probably get pelters from some but that's the beauty of this platform, you can have an alternative opinion. Thanks fella, really love that dog Bivvy bag. Cheers Sel

      I’m glad you appreciate that! Everyone is so different in their abilities which needs to be respected. I noticed massively with my children as they were always very able climbers and adventurers from 4-10 and when I took other kids out on adventures (their friends) they were so lacking to the point I had to constantly be watching them even just walking.
      Cheers Sel.

      Thousands of people each year complete challenges a thousand times worse. It usually takes 2months to complete Everest in a thousand times more dangerous situations. Should there be a ribbon across the bottom of Everest saying no access? I think you and the ‘Shropshire lad’ are judging on your own abilities and experiences which will be different from mine. Thanks Steve.

      22 years service and camping globally for 40 years I know my skill set and understand equipment failures and the impact on mortality. With that In mind I would not promote or encourage others through the medium of TH-cam to embrace storm force 9-11 for pleasure. Good luck Steve.

      And why is it possible? Through correct kit choice, careful planning, being calm, having contingency, having experience and in a storm case if possible staying where you are until it’s safe to move. Simple education that will help people who may unfortunately get caught out at some point.
