Someone a long time ago spent weeks, maybe months building that hut stone by stone, every day of it being treated to that weather with far simpler equipment to protect them. They persevered and built something that stands to this day. I can imagine them applauding your tenacious effort to use it as an abode again.
They might be sheep shelters but then again the mortar means it’s probably for humans rather than animals… might be something to do with mining? Is this in wales
Well - you are the perfect example of "No such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing". Your perseverance and enjoyment are a real tonic. And your videos are not silly or little!
Yes, I thought that some kind of plastic door would help to make a ' calm zone ' inside the stone hut.... Possibly put a line of stones on top of the cover, and resting on the wide stone walls...This would help to reduce the tearing damage to the cover..
You don’t make any ‘silly lil vids’. Your videos are inspirational, you truly are one of the most brave, tough, inspiring women lve ever watched. Your evident love of even the most bleak wilderness, is awesome, your bravery and fortitude to traverse some inhospitable terrain, through all treacherous conditions, and injures, while keeping us viewers informed and entertained, with charm, and good humour is enchanting.

I think the root of my love for camping/bushcrafting, etc., is just this. Making a cozy home, nest, bed in the midst of nature, where we can crawl in and be warm and comfy no matter what the weather is doing. Crappy weather makes it even cozier! 🏕️
Hi Claire, from the wolf mountains in Montana, off grid and have lived alone for the last ten years,,your videos make these long winter nights much less lonely. Beautifully done, and beautifull country, must have been quite hard for my ancesters to have left wales so long ago. Love your vids so well done ,,take care and so many thanks! Such a beautifull soul.
I used to do a lot of tracking camping out. Can't anymore with my health, it's great to see it hasn't died out. My kids had no interest growing up, roughing it to them was not having a mobile phone with them. The gear now is so expensive. Better buying ex-army surplus. It's good a little heavier but it stands up to the test. Squaddie proof. Great to see your videos. Reminds me of my oldest daughter you're very sweet. You are setting a great example for your son too. 👍
Alternative method, take a ratchet strap that will fit around the full circumference of the hut. Wrap that round about 2 inches above ground level, tie the tarp's cordage to the strap. A 2nd ratchet strap around the top of the hut will eliminate most of the flapping. You'll lose the little arch at the door though, but a short tarp/cloth attached to the two straps would create a door cover anyway.
I came to say that :) larger tarp and a ratchet strap would have been my plan. I'd have used a 5m tarp and single ratchet round the middle, then wrapped the loose ends of the tarp round it a bit b4 final tighten and a pole in the middle. Could probably do it with a bit of fence wire and a stick to twist it if no ratchet strap was available. If it was for survival though I'd probably have used one corner of the hut.
Wire, racket straps, mahoosive tarp. How much you wanna bring with ya😂😂😂 Why not some timber and slate to reinstate the roof 😂😂…… couple of butt hinges for the front door? 😂😂 Think ratchets on that surface would have shredded the tarp in that wind against the rock ……. Now a few layers of shrink wrap from each corner would protect it and hold it firmly in place. We build in a lot of remote locations …… but arid great for cover but rope and Ratchet give way ……. Weirdly shrink wrap kept everything dry, together and solid 🤷♂️
@@LeeCharles90 I think, because the tarp would be secured all the way around instead of at a small number of points the movement would be much smaller and point stress more distributed as to stop it tearing. True, it's an untested theory and in real life I'd not want to trust it without a backup but elsewise you'd need to bring something to stand the tarp off the wall at the top edge, such as some wood or towling material (both a bit heavy and cumbersome).
Congratulations, you are the most persistent young lady I have seen on TH-cam. Regardless of what you might want to accomplish in life, I am sure you will make it. Sleep tight and dry.
Somewhat over 50 years ago, I persuaded my employer to sponsor me on an Outward Bound course in the Lake District. This video reminds me of our ‘big night out’. Just a map, a silva compass and a heavy tarp. No worries about ripping there (just maybe a crushed back from the weight!). Found a good two-sided sheep pen up on the moors and huddled-up there on the lee side. One of the most memorable times of my life - and I’ve had a good life! Magic!

Well done, you finally cracked it. My hint with tarps is to make lots of short bungee loops for the tie out points and have all you guy lines terminated with small carabiners. I've noticed that it has been said here before, but I will add to it: When you smiled, after successfully raising up the center post, I just beamed with you! Your hour and a half-long tarp securement was well worth it. When I watched you struggling with having to place rocks on the guy line stakes, I said, out loud, "Oh, dear!" Claire's attempt nr 4. May I suggest the following steps Claire. Take up 6 timber A frames, approx 20 feet of 4X2, around 200 roofing tiles, scaffolding, a Workmate...... Yep tha should fit into your slightly bigger rucksack, (or a JCB would be more advisable 😁😁) it should, with tea breaks, take around two days, then the build should be completed. Method 2 would include getting Nick Knowles out and his DIY,SOS people out, and saying that you live in the roofless building with your 8 kids and limbless partner... They'll be finished within 2 hours, and created a roadway to your Range Rover. Fantastic. Love the channel as always.
Hi Claire, only stumbled across your channel yesterday, but I've had some of your videos on to keep my company whilst working from home. They are very relaxing and the scenery is stunning. Put some big rocks on top of the bricks right around to close the gaps that the wind blows through ! It will also secure your tent roof down and steady.
Good persistence! You took to heart what folks said on previous attempts. Yes, you needed that pole. Being a tent designer for a few successful companies for many years, perhaps you will appreciate tents a bit more in the future. I love tarp tents too, but generally don't try to stretch them over rocks for the reason you well know now. But small protected areas in trees do work well. Best for the future.
Resilience and a never say die attitude to overcome a rather harsh camp spot that saw 2 previous failures; came back determined to succeed this time around. And the music 🎶 in closing was superb.
I love the sound of the rain off a tarp or a tent ..it's soooi relaxing and sends me to sleep ...just an idea for you to try seeing as your an adventurer...have you ever tried hammock camping ....if ya fancy it buy a good quality one it does make a difference ...I've a feeling you'll enjoy it ..I would recommend in the summer though... god bless you❤
Reminds me of the time I was actually stuck out on a golf course with my dog one night during to lightning, rain and floods. Got stuck next to an old stone wall surrounded by trees. Just me wind proof umbrella, golf towel and me bag. Camped on it and fell asleep. Woke up as the ground gave away to a stream it had decided to form under me. Only went out for a few hours…….. 20 hours later I managed to walk back home😂😂 Dog loved it😂😂 Love what you do……great work
Watching you fight with the tarp in those insane winds made me laugh and hurt for you at the same time. I once found a beautiful creek side spot in the Black hills of South Dakota a monsoon of a rain hit around 3am in a matter of moments water was rushing though my tent I grabbed it lose and ran up the bank to where my motorcycle was parked and spent the rest of the morning sitting on a picnic table watching my campsite wash away I rolled the wet tent and everything in it and draped it over the back of my bike and drip dryed all the way to Yellowstone. A lot of lessons learned in a hurry Lol. Your something else young lady,God bless you.
You're damn tenacious, glad you got your night in the hut. I feel like it's not all over though, I get the feeling you'll go again with a different tarp and see what holds best and what gives you the best night's sleep. Can't wait for the next one.
Wow you're bold going camping in January! Impressive! I couldn't work out if you had a bivi but they're a good shout with a tarp as then the tarp only needs to keep the worst off and your sleeping bag stays dry
Congratulations! This is such a win. If you want to do it, I'd love to see another video of you camping there on a nice, quiet summer day and make it as cozy as possible. PS. Personally I prefer length of 20+ minutes for your videos. Thank you for creating!
This feels like closure based on the other two attempts. So buzzed that you cracked it - while I'm don't think I'm as brave as you, you have inspired me to do lots!
Hello Claire, I liked what you did in this video from your last attempt. ! You are on the right track. If you had 12 individual socks you could fill them with rocks and place them evenly around the top of the walls. Heavy enough to stay where you place them and they would be the only contact between your tarp and the top of the wall. Tighten the guy lines accordingly and this will pin the tarp to the sock covered rocks keeping them in place and not letting them contact the sharp rocks. The pole was definitely a great idea as it kept the tarp more taught. Love the adventure , you never disappoint . !
Quite the victory! We wanted you to, the nature fairies wanted you to, & you wanted to conquer it. Well done. Seems you ate well also. You appear very happy & satisfied. Your glow is contagious! Great video. Thank you
It's funny cause I love seeing you going to that hut . It's bad weather and don't look enjoyable for you out in the cold and rain , but if you were lost and came across that you would think it's a 5 star hotel lol . I think you should go back again and try and find some way to cover the door and maybe put some moss on top of the rocks so they don't rip thru tarp . You could really make that into an awesome shelter . Make it perfect during summer then go try it out in winter maybe . Love your videos All The Best and take care
This is ok for a survival situation.. but not for a relaxing enjoyable wild camping experience.. your not a quitter I'll give you that 3rd time the charm
I have seen your other two videos previously. I am glad that this was a successful feat. Hopefully I will see you again in this Hut someday with a new adventure.
Tenacious and I suspect you like to win, 🥇 I resonate with your Story, we spent two years searching for the missing “Kaimai DC3 engine” from New Zealand’s worst aircraft disaster (23 souls) to be used for a museum 60th anniversary memorial. We located both engines up a dangerous & rugged stream canyon. We finally got it choppered out which put that Story to bed too, it’s called closure, humans like closure ❤
I admire your persistence in attempting to use this stone hut. You make me laugh and want to hug you at the same time. Thank you so much for sharing your adventures...
Congratulations Claire on finally succeeding in finding a tarp that held up under extreme winds. Watched you since the first attempt which was a disaster. Thanks for sharing
Perhaps tie a heavy-duty line tightly around the perimiter of the shelter, then tie the tarp to that which would keep the tarp snug to the top and sides, keeping the wind from getting under the tarp. You can add additional tie downs from the perimiter rope to takes or rocks if needed
Hello Claire.. You and Karen have made me realise that there is something missing. Had meeting with doctor today and she has told me my health has to come first. I follow you both when your out on your adventure,s. I miss the freedom and nights away from the norm. Best wishes and travel free across our beautiful land of hills, valleys and mountains. The places that God gave us,,, Best wishes Mick,,, Chef-on-the-wild-side... X
Your clip reminded me of myself so so much. Waterproof clothes not working. The January darkness!!!! Third attempt and you refused to be defeated! Inspiring. Maybe a little quirky but still inspiring! Thank you.
Well done for persevering!! I have had too many experiences with ticks in ruined buildings like that as the sheep and deer like to use them to shelter from the wind. Looks a great little spot for an late summer stay though.
I am glad for you Claire ... You made it through in the stone hut. I am bit sad for the tarp that is a nice piece of kit ... Got the same one ad you. Sharp stones and tarp are just not a match 🤪
I only recently discovered your channel. I love it and your outlook on life. I have loved the outdoors, hiking and backpacking all my life. I truly find myself when out. If you ever get a chance take a trip to the West Coast of Canada for some exhilarating hikes. Vancouver Island has it all. Thank you for sharing your adventures.
Claire, I have to say that as soon as I saw your nice DD tarp getting pulled out..... I cringed, knowing you were going to be sacrificing a fine piece of gear, and I do own that same tarp, in order to successfully camp in that awesome old near ruin in that awfully lousy weather. That kind of rock weathers well, and holds its sharp edges just as well. Oh well! And thank goodness for the bivy! Your zest for solo adventuring out there regardless of conditions it seems, is truly admirable.
What a legend you are wildbeare. Such a indomitable spirit. Your love of nature is obvious to see and your adventurous spirit shines bright. You should be very proud of yourself and I think you maybe a little bit crazy... In the best way possible. Just one question if I may... How does one look so radiant after just 3 hours sleep? Amazing.
Congratulations young lady. This is one of the purest videos I have ever seen on TH-cam. And if you don't mind, the next time my daughter says something is too hard, she will be watching this.
Some day I will buy a small tent, few tarps and good ropes and go camping. Hearing the rain and the wind and sleeping all alone up at the mountain might just be the refreshment for the soul.
You are doing important work. This is a great example of what does and does not work in an emergency, if such an event or situation arose. Lots of things to overcome, mainly wind and rain. Of course sometimes the solution is to give up and use the tarp in a more suitable placement if this was a real situation and not a controlled test as you have done.

I love tarp tents too, but generally don't try to stretch them over rocks for the reason you well know now. But small protected areas in trees do work well. Best for the future.
I feel like I live vicariously through you. I wish I had done this sort of this when I was younger. You have such a peaceful manner of narration.
Thank you 💚

Keep going pet ,you’re brilliant ⭐️💪🏻
Resilience and a never say die attitude to overcome a rather harsh camp spot that saw 2 previous failures; came back determined to succeed this time around. And the music 🎶 in closing was superb.
I love the sound of the rain off a tarp or a tent ..it's soooi relaxing and sends me to sleep ...just an idea for you to try seeing as your an adventurer...have you ever tried hammock camping ....if ya fancy it buy a good quality one it does make a difference ...I've a feeling you'll enjoy it ..I would recommend in the summer though... god bless you❤
Should've put large rocks on the ledge to the tarp from blowing everywhere. Also plying rocks creating a door covering the entry way.
Exactly 💯 percent 😊
Your determination is unrivaled. Well done Beare!!!
Wow! So happy you did finally succeed. Love the defiant spirit. Well done.
Fantastic video - Keep up the great work. Much love and all the best on your next adventure.
Yay !!! You Did it !! I love watching your videos Claire. Thanks for never giving up. :)
20 hours later I managed to walk back home😂😂
Dog loved it😂😂
Love what you do……great work
Watching you fight with the tarp in those insane winds made me laugh and hurt for you at the same time.
Great video.. I Loved the sound of the rain on your tarp , makes it sound very cozy 👍👍
Such an amazing woman to tolerate all that wet & windy weather & still set up the camp AND actually get some sleep. 👏👏👏
Another awe inspiring video of tenacity and endurance, I love it , keep up the good work .
Quite the victory! We wanted you to, the nature fairies wanted you to, & you wanted to conquer it. Well done. Seems you ate well also. You appear very happy & satisfied. Your glow is contagious! Great video. Thank you
Your determination to overcome adversity is good to watch. Your tenacity is truly commendable. Well done.
You are a star. Can't help wondering how much the open 'door' adds to the difficulty. Great content
Well done you finally conquering it and you certainly never wimped out waiting until a nice summers night !
Great storytelling, great music choice. The outro feels like the end of an epic fight against the evil. And the good survived ...
I admire your persistence in attempting to use this stone hut. You make me laugh and want to hug you at the same time. Thank you so much for sharing your adventures...
You're absolutely amazingly, determined woman. Glad it worked this time. Well done Claire
This is really the hardest rain I‘ve ever seen in a shelter-overnighter video. Great video!
Congratulations Claire on finally succeeding in finding a tarp that held up under extreme winds. Watched you since the first attempt which was a disaster. Thanks for sharing
What a great job you have done , really great. 😊❤. Very brave Linda
I love your determination and persistence with the tarpaulin in the wintry weather ❤
just came across your channel today and so grateful this update was already uploaded so i can see the entire saga start to finish
My life will not be normal but is hall carry on with cooking out and foraging as i have someone to go with. I have a story to tell but not in here as others may read it. Carry on with your adventures and i shall always watch what video,s you put up. Your both a breath of fresh air and i wish you both well. Best wishes and travel free across our beautiful land of hills, valleys and mountains. The places that God gave us,,, Best wishes Mick,,, Chef-on-the-wild-side... X
Glad it finally worked for you. Congrats on your success
I love this lass and her brave videos ...well done and thank you .
Looks like a nice place to visit in the summer to prepare for an outing. Leave the floor pretty smooth for next visit. Maybe leave another tarp.
Your face when the extendy pole props up the roof.
Priceless x
Great video.
Admire anyone that has determination. Congratulations on conquering the night there 🤗💜✌️
I'm glad your pole stayed up all night and your flaps didn't get too flappy. Well done!
Ahhh the Delia Smith of the camping world is back with another gem of a video - so glad it was third time lucky!
Congratulations on achieving this goal. You are such an intrepid adventurer. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us.
Amazing.
Loved it.. so glad you finally succeeded in sleeping in “your” hut!
Congratulations young lady. This is one of the purest videos I have ever seen on TH-cam. And if you don't mind, the next time my daughter says something is too hard, she will be watching this.
Victory! Well done Claire. You are very persistent and inspirational.
Señorita wildbear, muy fascinante su contenido, siempre atento a todos sus videos enriquecedores e interesantes, gracias es usted un gran referente.
Great informative video, as always. Thanks. Wouldn't it be great to take that to the next stage and make it in to a Bothy type shelter.
Some day I will buy a small tent, few tarps and good ropes and go camping. Hearing the rain and the wind and sleeping all alone up at the mountain might just be the refreshment for the soul.
Brilliant. Love the honesty and reflection. Hope your next adventure is a little drier!
Claire you really are a ray of sunshine. Top job on nailing that in rank conditions girl. 👏👏👏
your perseverance is commendable.
