I love when Rocky raises his hand and says how his son used to fit in it, and the son rolls his eyes like what is the old man talking about… And then the power of that speech begins!
2 months late to the party. Went through a really rough year during 2020-2021. My favourite science teacher referenced this speech saying 'its not about how hard you hit, its about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward' mainly that conversation that day, and some many after that saved my life. So kinda saved mine
There will always be people who see themselves as victims and blame others for their problems; and then there are people like Rocky, who take their own lives into their own hands, and fight. The latter are the winners, no matter whether they succeed or not, because they defeated the hardest opponent - themselves.
2:39 “Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get it and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done! Now if you know what you’re worth then go out and get what you’re worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain’t you! You’re better than that!” ~ Rocky
The speech is brilliant - but it's the end when he speaks directly to his son by saying, "cowards do that, and that ain't you! You're better than that!" gets me every time
That’s the hope he offered to his son, because he knew his true capacity and ability. Rocky didn’t just confront, dictate, critic, point out or expose faults & embarrass him. He wanted him to realise that in the end their was a way out to that negative, defeatist & cowardly mindset. He gave him timely advice with that comment “Be responsible, accountable & accepting of choices, don’t blame others or seek to blame anyone. Own it and learn from the experience, so when your facing the same challenge, circumstances or adversity, your prepared to face it head on. Learning can only be attained by experience, advice & accumulate adaptive skills. Remember it’s going to be hard, tough and even difficult but don’t have the mindset “I wish, I overcame my difficulties or I had confidence”. Because in the end what happens in time past cannot be regained, cannot be changed or even cannot be relived to gain a different outcome. The person needs to have the belief in one skill coupled with the courage in abilities learned to trust in them to achieve a desired result. As Teddy Atlas “Do not allow pressure to distort time.” You’ll be able to overcome it in a moment or brief period. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about realising and accepting your weaknesses and how to utilise your strengths in a strategic & methodic fashion.

My dad died when I was 16. He had been sick for several years with various health problems. He was also an alcoholic. But I have my dad to thank for several things. He was born in Europe and came to America in his 30s, so he gave me life in America where people like Rocky can work hard and keep moving forward. My dad was also a very hard worker. You don't get anywhere without working and my dad did rough physical labor to support his family. My dad was far from perfect and he had many demons in his life. He never really was a father to me due to his illnesses. But I thank my dad for all the things he did do for me. Rocky and other father figures helped me where my dad wasn't able to help me.
I first saw this as a 19 year old in the cinema and thought it was a nice scene. Now as a father of a one year old son, I come back and watch this quite frequently and get emotional every time. Simply magnificent, arguably the most powerful scene in the whole franchise
I think Sly was inspired to write this the way he did based on his own career, which is chock full of hits and failures. No matter what, he kept moving forward and he is still a winner.
It's going to be a sad day when Stallone passes away. I'll remember him from this scene alone, probably more than his entire career. This speech is legendary and can save someone's life.
The moment when Rocky became wise beyond his years. Everything Rock has went through all the years has finally came to this particular moment of given some wise advice to his son. He's talking about how to overcome the odds when the whole world is against you. If anyone who knows what its like when life beats you down. Its him!!!! Hes been through the gutter time and time again but never let failure overwhelm him or give up hope. He's always endured through faith in God and the love of his family/friends. This May be Rocky defining moment of character development throughout the series.
Probably the best most insightful speech in all of the Rocky movies. I get misty when I watch it and this is why I have a soft spot for Stallone that I do not have for any other actor.
On The Family Stallone, Sly takes his family to Philly and to that same spot. He starts saying the speech and his daughters start saying it! They know every word of that speech. Sly ingrained it into their lives as they grew up. He says of all the great things he’s written, this speech is the best!
The entire scene is too good..But when he says ""cowards do that, and that ain't you! You're better than that!" , it just speaks about a Father's Love for his Son. The way he is urging his son to stand on his feet is just phenomenal..This line brings tears in my eyes every time when I watch this scene.
This speech got me out of my own depression. “It ain’t about how hard you can hit, it’s how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward, that’s how winning is done”. All of us need to remember that line . Hardship isn’t forever, it’s simply a lesson to help us overcome anything in the future
I understand that completely: I was unemployed and on Welfare, eating in a Soup Kitchen 16 years ago. Now I have been in a government job for nearly 16 years and have almost saved up the Downpayment to buy my first home.
The best speech about life . Everyone should listen to this speech. Learning to keep pushing forward . Every time I feel low I listen to this speech. Truly inspirational.
Rocky's speech nears perfection . " it is not about how hard you hit . it is about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward . how much can you take and keep moving forward "
Nah people do care. It’s just sometimes we aren’t aware of what’s going on inside someone. Yes we celebrate and focus on someone pushing forward but it’s because we believe in them
I read everybody's comments..but I want to tell you all that I have nobody in this world..No Mother No father..No Brother.. Nobody...Only One Son who's 4yrs old and my wife took him from me and left me..Now I m fighting for my son to get him back in the court...I just want to share my feeling that how hard I felt after watching this scene..😔😔😪😪
And you will because for you there is no other option. She may win some of the battles but you're out to win the war. You can outlast her, just take the hits and don't give up. Keep on going eventually something's going to give and it ain't you.
This speech never fails to make me cry. Heard this speech again yesterday after a few months and the amount of tears I shedded was insane. Love this movie to death and grateful for this speech
For most of the speech its Rocky talking to his son, but 3:03 the camera gets closer to rocky to where only he is in the frame. Its as though at this point in the speech, Rocky starts talking to us DIRECTLY, and we the audience have been put into the eyes of Rocky's son hearing his words. Because at the end of the day, these are words everyone needs to hear at some point. Amazing cenimatography to match this incredible speech
I've suffered so much in life from the moment losing a parent who never really cared to begin with them to suffer from bpd and psychotic hallucinations living with a permanent bully putting me down and reminded me off all I lose and the things I don't have to live and be there for a son to have him ripped from my life in an instant to raising a 2nd child almost single handely for the last 3 years to be left with no family's or friends justify trauma of the last decade and the daughter who keeps me going this speech speaks to me.
My favorite speech in the Rocky Balboa franchise and 12 years later He and Rocky Jr reconcile because of The Italian Stallion finally getting to know his grandson named Logan and Logan looks like his late grandma Adrian
I grew up watching Rocky, and when this film came out, I was an adult. I never, ever, forgot this scene because when I had kids... this was my credo to be there for them. Tough love and it is not about how hard you hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. Forever. Thanks, Rock, thanks for showing me how to fight.
I was really touched when I went to the movies and watched the movie. This scene is just a positive seen to make people want to change if that's possible.
I've been a fan of Rocky since #1 came out in theatres. Rocky has never been about fighting. The 1st 3 were a love story. Since then, they've been a life story. That's what this old Rocky fan sees anyway.
I love Rocky IV. Russia/Drago! Training hand made differently, in the cold, he does it with heart, determination! But eventually, Adrian shows up. And they motivates Rocky to keep going, for himself, family, and Apollo! Rocky V is classic, street fight, helps his son stand up for himself, and money/cars/houses = materialist things vs. family, heart, determination to do something. Even Creed 1-3 are valuable lessons for the younger generation under 40 years of age. Come from something and turn into something bigger! Earn it, fight for it, don’t stop!
The most impactful scene I’ve watched , Rocky was able to push up people through words and not only fighting or trainning and that’s why Rocky was a turning point for its time.
While I like the Rocky movies I wouldn't consider myself a Fan but man I can say that this scene is one of the best scenes in cinema history. That speech hits so hard and true.
My dad used to give me a very similar speech and always said, "If you're ever feeling down or depressed to watch this scene" Now that he's gone, it just hits that much harder.
When life is beating me down and when I’m having a hard time figuring out what it’s all for I play this speech, close my eyes, and imagine my father speaking to me. Telling me I can take the hits and keep moving forward. Telling me I am worth it if I believe I am.
The best father and son conversation ever.... i think sons with a famous dad can relate to this. Its hard to step in these shoes. But remember... your dad will always be proud of what you accomplish in life. I know my dad is watching me from above and is proud. As much as i am proud of him. Next week i am going to have this speech tattooed on my leg. Will live by it everyday and hopefully can inspire others with it
Right now I feel ROCKY 4 SHOULD be played on every television channel especially the words and speech at the end..show this younger generation what work means
With all honesty and seriousness, this scene changed my life for the better, best, and greater good. It broadened my mental capacity and helped me developed a much bigger and better mindset than I had before I discovered this.
This is literally the second time, I've heard that speech, and the first time I heard it, touched my heart so deeply, it stuck with me and brought tears to my eyes
Stallone is a very smart and wise guy. If you search around TH-cam and the internet you’ll find a number of pearls of wisdom from him. He’s led a very interesting life and has so much useful knowledge to impart. He and Schwarzenegger have had similar lives and are heroes of mine.
I wonder how Milo was feeling when Sly delivered that? That was so powerful. There was so much GREATNESS in that speech. I tear up when I hear it. So many emotions in it. There's Sorrow, Anger, Determination, Hope, and Love. Sly is a gift to the Screen. God Bless you Stallone "Rocky"
I have this speech printed on canvas on my feature wall. I have struggled with mental health for years. Each morning, I see a reminder I can take hits and keep moving forward and it really helps.
This what is what I think is happening with our youth these days. They aren't willing to take the hits that life brings. They are scarred of the hits so they hide and blame the system, they blame the rich, they blame everything and everyone. I wish they would see this video. My father used to tell my brothers and I a similar message after our brother passed away from cancer when he was only 15. We had to keep moving forward and do good in life and appreciate the things that no amount of money can buy or fix (our health, love for family). And above all, we had to not be afraid to take chances to achieve something we wanted. I see so many young kids now and they are so afraid, so lost. Man. I hope it changes
That speech got me sober. Over 5 years now I been clean.
Congrats, man. Keep on going

Im so sorry for your loss my friend. Alcholism runs in my family and unfort iv succumbed to the illness myself.
My condolences
nice story,, thanks for sharing that bro, made me think
My condolences sorry about that
I first saw this as a 19 year old in the cinema and thought it was a nice scene.
Like Nicholas Cage.
@@StillTheVoid Nicholas Cage had connections. He is great actor, don't get me wrong, but he is the nephew of Fran Coppola and Tea Shaire.
It's going to be a sad day when Stallone passes away. I'll remember him from this scene alone, probably more than his entire career. This speech is legendary and can save someone's life.
One of the very best inspiration speeches ever he was not just talking to his son but to all of us too 😊❤
Gave me direction on My darkest days. Thank you Rocko.
Its Rocky. Not Rocko
@@_Giallorossi its his nickname
The best speech ever of all Rocky's
This speech is up there with Rocky 3 when him and Adrian talked on the beach
And in Rocky 5 where he was loosing respect from his family because of Tommy Gunn.
Which Rocky is this clip from?
@@RobertPrestonHill Rocky Balboa (2006)
"Nobody is gonna hit as hard as life." sums up all the Rocky saga. What a great line and monologue !
Like a tank on a Mission. Taking all the hits & working my way to the top ! No excuses. No finger pointing. Just gratitude & determination.
Probably the best most insightful speech in all of the Rocky movies. I get misty when I watch it and this is why I have a soft spot for Stallone that I do not have for any other actor.
I get goosebumps everytime he starts to get loud and says "That's how winning is done".
On The Family Stallone, Sly takes his family to Philly and to that same spot. He starts saying the speech and his daughters start saying it! They know every word of that speech. Sly ingrained it into their lives as they grew up. He says of all the great things he’s written, this speech is the best!
Seriously?
3:23 ... Couldn't hold back the tears anymore 💯
The entire scene is too good..But when he says ""cowards do that, and that ain't you! You're better than that!" , it just speaks about a Father's Love for his Son. The way he is urging his son to stand on his feet is just phenomenal..This line brings tears in my eyes every time when I watch this scene.
The letters you chose to capitalize confuses me.
Unpopular opinion: this is the best part of the all the Rockies since IV.
For me it's a top 3 scene in the whole franchise.
I'll reel in unpopularity right along with you because I agree 100%.
This clip should be shown in all the schools/ universities around the world.
I totally agree
The best acted seen and writing from any movie ever. Go Stallone.
Rocky's speech nears perfection . " it is not about how hard you hit . it is about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward . how much can you take and keep moving forward "
It’s a very true speech. No one in life cares what you’re going through, they just care if you can push through.
Get back together lad...
Jesus knows, and He's right there wanting to be your best friend.
And you will because for you there is no other option. She may win some of the battles but you're out to win the war. You can outlast her, just take the hits and don't give up. Keep on going eventually something's going to give and it ain't you.
@@vianeyalopez Thanks for the support 🙏🏻
@@BabaYaga... Don't give up. If it gets to be too much go break something or go yell at the sky for a minute.
4:09 That chick at the end standing there the whole time on the sidewalk wasn't going anywhere during that speech.
Growing without a father and listening to this hits harder. thanks, Rocky. For teaching me how to get hit and keep moving forward.
I have to listen to this speech every now and then just to remind myself and put things into perspective.
This speech never fails to make me cry. Heard this speech again yesterday after a few months and the amount of tears I shedded was insane. Love this movie to death and grateful for this speech
I memorized this speech and said to myself from time to time and Keep moving forward.
This is what being a father instead of a friend looks like.
I totally agree with you
I love Rocky IV.
My dad used to give me a very similar speech and always said, "If you're ever feeling down or depressed to watch this scene"
Now that he's gone, it just hits that much harder.
Very inspirational speech 👍🏼
Sylvester Stallone talented man who created something great that’s on screen for over 40 years.
Rocky Balboa my only favourite sports Movie.
When life is beating me down and when I’m having a hard time figuring out what it’s all for I play this speech, close my eyes, and imagine my father speaking to me. Telling me I can take the hits and keep moving forward. Telling me I am worth it if I believe I am.
The entire franchise leads up to this monologue, which describes her in one sentence, brilliantly!
Will live by it everyday and hopefully can inspire others with it
When my son is old enough to blame other people for his problems I will show him this
Right now I feel ROCKY 4 SHOULD be played on every television channel especially the words and speech at the end..show this younger generation what work means
One of the best lines in this scene is the unspoken one when Rocky gestures to himself as the “big shadow” that his son is using as an excuse.
Absolutely EXCEPTIONAL and the BEST *Life Advice* EVER❣️
💯👈🏽...
💚*🙏🏽✅
With all honesty and seriousness, this scene changed my life for the better, best, and greater good. It broadened my mental capacity and helped me developed a much bigger and better mindset than I had before I discovered this.
Don't ever let anyone tell you you can't do something! You want something, you go out and you get it, and don't let anything stand in your way!
It is always good to rewatch this.
Don't forget to visit your mother . Awesome lines .
This is literally the second time, I've heard that speech, and the first time I heard it, touched my heart so deeply, it stuck with me and brought tears to my eyes
The way Milo Ventimiglia's mouth draws up when he gets emotional made him the perfect casting choice for Rocky's son. What an epic scene.
The greatest speech not only in the franchise but probably of all movies in general!
each word is wisdom, each word is to live by, the best piece of advise.
A lot of comments about how incredibly good the lines are. But I can't stop thinking about his amazing delivery. ❤
This may be the best motivational speech ever to appear in a movie. And both actors were perfect.
Watched this clip before I went for the interview for my dream job. I got offered. Best motivational talk ever.
Rocky movies are great in a non typical way. It's just so compelling.
They need to play this speech in every classroom across America.
I have this speech printed on canvas on my feature wall. I have struggled with mental health for years. Each morning, I see a reminder I can take hits and keep moving forward and it really helps.
The most honest and truthful description of what life about.
This speech genuinely changed my life, a lot of people overlook how powerful movies can be
Until you start believing in yourself, you're not going to have a life.. This word hit me like a heavy punch.
