How Comes He Don't Want Me ?!

  • A pain I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy, yet some of my best friends know it well.
    Just wanted to give a massive shout out to my fellow fathers doing one of the most important jobs that exist.
    Often receiving much abuse rather than the Love and appreciation they deserve.
    Stay strong my brothers, your hard work will pay off in time.
    Interview with Will Smith quashing rumors that his Dad wasn't in his life.
    "...I told my parents I wanted to rap. They said, “Rap?” My mother graduated from Carnegie Mellon. She thought
    college was the only way. My father could kind of see doing something differently. We agreed that I would take a year making music, and if it did not work
    out, I would go to college. That year we won the first Grammy given to a rap artist..."

      I grew up with my dad around, but he worked alot to support us and it felt alot of times like he wasn't around so in a way I could relate.
      now I'm in my mid-30's and it isn't until now that I can appreciate what he and my mom did for us.

      Nothing is worse than calling your dad by their real name. It's one of the things that shows the respect the child has. If at all their name is said, that form of relationship and respect is broken. Will calling his father Lou was the biggest thing to show he will never view him as a father ever again.

    During the episode’s final scene, Smith was struggling to bring it all home. “I’m messing up the lines because I wanted it so bad,” Smith said in the podcast interview. It was Avery, always the steady influence, that centered him, giving the rapper turned movie star memorable advice. “Relax. It’s already in there, you know what it is. Look at me. Use me. Don’t act around me, act with me,” Smith recalled Avery saying. The young actor would go on to deliver one of the biggest emotional punches in “Fresh Prince” history.
    “How come he don’t want me, man?” Will asks, lip quivering as he starts to break down and cry. Uncle Phil grabs Will and hugs him fiercely, as he wished his father would. The two were locked in that epic embrace when Avery doled out even more encouragement.
    “While he’s hugging me, he whispers in my ear, 'That’s f---ing acting right there,” recalled Smith, who also revealed the motivation behind that performance. “I wanted him to want me. I wanted him to approve of me.”

      Avery knew that if Smith looked at him even once he'd see his own performance reflected, that the compassion he saw there would help him get the scene right....a good actor knows that you're always acting even if you have no lines, and a better actor knows to give attention to everyone in the scene.

    This scene makes me cry every time. My parents divorced when I was 4 and I didn't see or hear from my dad again until I was 17. Fortunately I had an amazing Step-father that took me and my sister in and treated us as if we were his own children. He taught me everything I needed to know in life and when I was down and lost everything he was there to help me back up. He passed away in June this year from cancer and he is sorely missed. Pop I think about you everyday and if it wasn't for you I wouldn't be the man I am today. Thank you for all you taught me and showing me tough love when I needed it. You wasn't just some man my mom married. You took on a responsibility that wasn't yours and you did it with no questions asked. You were my father when you didn't have to be. I can only pray to be half the man that you were. I love you Pop.

      @Supahpowahnerd890 2 ปีที่แล้ว +235

      More than that, it's obvious that Lou can tell Will isn't buying his excuse and responds by piling on further lies. Beyond being a deadbeat, he's particularly contemptible in that he has no intention of following up, but he's too insecure to leave Will unless he can (even if briefly) convince him that he's not abandoning him again. When he gets called by his first name, Lou tries to come up with something he can say to leave with as much ego intact as he can, but he gives up, retreating from the accusatory glare and overall discomfort in the air.
      Vereen does an excellent job of portraying this, reacting to Smith's body language and tone.

      nothing ever is black and white though, there are valid reason not wanting to raise a kid, also if it was an accidental conception despite protection on all sides and the woman keeps it against the man's will he should be free to go and no judging on my side, his wish not to be a father was clear from start to finish and in the 21st century we have enough medical progress to not make it happen

    • @jamesmallone
      @jamesmallone 2 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      @@ZetsubouZolo That is a more nuanced look at it, but for simplicity's sake we don't get much of an idea of any of that kind of stuff in the episode. All we know is Lou got scared, didn't feel ready to be a father, and bolted.
      The thing is, Lou had options, he could have picked up the phone. He could have sat down and actually talked to his son about leaving instead of trying to bullshit him. But that's not what the story is about. It's about someone who SHOULD try harder for their family, and just won't, and sadly that DOES hit hard for a lot of people who know how that feels.

    Tears flowing. Something else to remember even if you have a dad that lives with you and is there , but ignores you and is not really there could be just as bad.

    I was so blessed to have an absolutely amazing dad. I never had to experience this kind of pain that this scene depicted, and I'm so grateful and appreciative of that

    "How come he don't want me man..?" is something NO CHILD should EVER say about their father.

      yep, it takes a toll. My father was an abusive alcoholic and told me that he wants nothing to do with me and hasn't spoken to me since I was 14. I'm 26 now. I made a lot of mistakes growing up. But it hurts deep, deep inside to hear your father tell you he never wants to speak to you again.

    You can hear Karyn Parsons crying off stage at the end of this scene, that's how heavy this shit was. Oscar level performances all around.
