    For those who prefer to read an article format., here is my blog review: robinwong.blogspot.com/2021/0...
    Olympus PEN E-PL10 was launched in November 2019, but only available for sale in Malaysia recently in March 2021. Hence I wanted to take a closer look at this camera, and see how it performs today in 2021. The E-PL10 is an entry level mirrorless system camera, that has interchangeable lens capability, and features a Micro Four Thirds 16MP (older generation) image sensor. It is designed to be compact, light, and easy to use, with simplistic layout, minimal buttons and dials, and stylish look. The camera is made for casual everyday shooters in mind, definitely not for professional or serious use. I brought the E-PL10 out to do some street shooting as well as covering a live theatre show in Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Center. I tortured the E-PL10 in a dimly lit stage, with actors dancing and moving constantly, I had to shoot with high ISO (6400 mostly, but went up 12800 and 25600 several times). I concluded that the E-PL10 still far surpasses what even the best smartphone camera can do today - being able to use any lens (tele lens in this case for far reach), having extremely fast and reliable AF even in low light, and very good image quality at high ISO.

    Just in case you missed the description, I have also written in blog article format for Olympus E-PL10 review here: robinwong.blogspot.com/2021/03/olympus-pen-e-pl10-review.html
    I try to keep the video as short as possible, hence I did miss out some points, eg my complains about the camera. Based on analytics, most people click off at the half point of the video, so why bother saying all the things if most people don't even bother to listen? So for a more "complete" review, do read the article!

      Hello Robin, I watched your great review and read your blog. I have a extra question. I am interested to buy this camera after hearing your review, but there is one thing that you didn't cover and need your OK. Can I use the the E-PL10 for live streaming? Have you done it?

    Excellent video Robin. You hit all the reasons why this camera is worth getting. The E-PL10 does very well what it was designed for: to be a camera for smartphone photographers that want and need something more [than their smartphone]. In the US it's very well priced at $550 USD which includes the M.Zuiko 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. The only thing I'd add to that would be the Lumix 25mm f/1.7 and M.Zuiko 40-150mm f/4-5.6 lenses for a very reasonable $250 combined. For $800 USD you'll get a great camera that will be useful for years, unlike your current smartphone. All the best of luck to JIP in their new venture.

    Yesterday I took out my old EPM-2 and rediscovered how much of a fun camera it is. The EPMs were even smaller than the EPL series and it's unfortunate they were dropped. I put the Panasonic 12-32 on it because I like the wider angle of view and manual zoom instead of the 14-42 EZ with its electric zoom. I think an EPM-3 with a new ultra compact 15 mm f/2.4 inverse retrofocus pancake lens (i.e., a digital Olympus XA) and flip up screen like the EPL would make an absolutely wonderful walking around street camera. Flip up the LCD and shoot from the belly, like a TLR, and get a level view of the world instead of angling down from eye level shooting. No camera bags needed, just slip the camera in and out of a pocket.

    My first micro 4/3 cameras were the PL2 and PL 5 and my biggest complaint was the lack of a viewfinder. I added the VF2, then the VF-4 and it made the cameras much more fun to use. As you write in your blog, Olympus needs to bring back an electronic viewfinder for the camera! I guess I'm old fashioned (and old!), but I just have to have the option of a viewfinder for most of my shooting.

  • @michaeld5888

    I was lucky and managed to buy one of these for £370 and it is a super little camera. Best to steer clear of the E-PL9 as electronic shutter is hidden in a special mode and bizarrely locked in to the super warm white balance which give a tobacco stained room effect. Likewise with the E-M10 III but they brought out an E-M10 IIIS which put electronic shutter in to all modes but this was not done with the E-PL9. I actually bought an E-PL9 and sold it on quickly. Most reviewers missed this improvement and thought the new camera was the same. Many reviewers have little experience with the developments in any model range especially in this affordable sector. The Keystone compensation in AP makes this my favourite camera for buildings as you can dial out the lean when viewing from a low angle. Being able to buy in body stabilisation at these prices is something aps-c still mightily struggles with.

    I use the Olympus E-PL8 for street (pana-leica 15mm f1.7), Portrait (Sigma 56mm f1.4) and studio work (12- 45 F4 pro). I even got the godox x2t radio trigger. So much lighter than my FF camera + less intimidating! (Perhaps i should consider buying an EM5/EM1😀)
    This is such a fun camera, with a prime lens it so small, but powerfull.

    The Pen range of cameras is so underrated. My first Pen was an E-PL1. I had an E-PM1 as well, I did not like the 12MP sensor and the colors it produced. Now, my pocket MFT camera is a E-PM2, which has the same 16.1MP sensor as the E-PL10 and is the smallest Olympus MFT camera available. I wish Olympus had better pancake lenses to go with the small Pen bodies, so they become pocketable.

    Great video, Robin! It is refreshing to see camera manufacturers and fans come directly at smartphones, as the two classes of cameras have their strengths and weaknesses. I have long wondered why the “real” camera makers don’t just do stuff like show a super-telephoto being mounted and then play the in-camera video going from 14mm to 150mm with a voiceover intoning, “No smartphone can do this and create an image worth sharing.” Or perhaps a video asking the simple question, “Why aren’t smartphones used to shoot sports?” and then go through how large-aperture long lenses are required to get the separation needed to truly capture and emphasize the decisive moments in a game. I think camera companies and their marketers have large blind spots when it comes to promoting their products against disruption from the low end. What comes almost instinctively to a professional photographer can be re-told clearly to novices who are frustrated that they can’t get the shots they want, but don’t know that some realities of physics require the full capability of a system camera.

    This is a very well done video. I just bought one of these cameras. I actually tried to get Adorama to swap it with the E-M10 before it shipped but it came all the way to me anyway. I do wish it had a viewfinder, which is why I last minute tried to swap it. But once I got it out of the box I knew I'd keep it. Anyway Olympus may never make another new Pen camera so get one while you can!

    I have an E-M5 Mark III and I had an E-PL9 as my second camera. The E-PL9 was great! Then I bought an iPhone 11 Pro and sold the E-PL9. That was a mistake! The iPhone takes good pictures, but the E-PL9 was much better. This is particularly noticeable when editing images. I'm waiting for an E-PL11 - I'll buy it.

    Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on the PL10! For me they are life changing. I'm not joking!
    I actually own and love my E-PL10. But the first thing I automatically did after taking a picture, was zooming in, to look for the little grain in a dark background. "Pixel Peeping". So I tried to stay at ISO 200, or at least below ISO 1600 in low light situations. The furthest I ever went for a completely dark room - barely lit by a few candles - was ISO 6400. So watching it now on screen, without pixel peeping, I got practically grain free pictures of not moving people. And dozens of blurry dancing couples I can never recover.
    And now you come along and show an amazing picture taken at a whopping ISO 25600 - a setting I would never ever have considered at all! So I'm looking forward to take pictures, where I care about the main topic most. If it is moving people in low light, I'll take whatever ISO it needs to nail them. No one expects an action picture to be perfectly grain free, but to be sharp and memorable!

    It's great to see the Pens getting some love on your channel! (And hopefully a sign that OM D S will continue the line.) However, as an E-PL8 user I think you should have mentioned that the Pen Ten has some downgrades that MAKE it an entry-level camera, where they USED to be for serious photographers too. The E-PL8 had the same svelte layout, but you could customize 5 of the buttons; on the Ten, 2. The E-PL8 offered 26 features you can assign TO a button; the Ten, only 11 (not including ISO). The E-PL8 offered 4 custom modes (then called MySets) that you could map to unused spaces on the Mode dial; the Ten eliminated those. Finally the E-PL8 had the plug that supported the (terrific) VF-4 external EVF as well as other accessories. I have an E-M1 Mark II and still use my E-PL8 more often for street photography due to its pocketability and tilt screen. Now, for some reason they gave the Pen Ten silent shutter, which the E-PL8 doesn't have, and I wish it did! So despite all my pet peeves I might still upgrade...cheers!

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I love all cameras, any shape and sizes.
      First of all, all your complains about the E-PL10 should be directed to E-PL9. Olympus made a decision to take out all the features (accesory port for EVF attachment, shortcut buttons, etc) simply because of one reason - people who buy E-PL series cameras don;t use it. Even if they do, maybe 2% of the E-PL users only, and that does not justify them keeping these extra bloats, which costs a lot more to make the cameras.
      I don't blame Olympus. They put a lot in the camera, the E-PL7 had too many features, but if people just don't use them (not surprising, since entry level users are happy with basic camera setup), why continue making them available?

    Enjoyed the review, Mr. Wong. I gave mine a try for 6 months, having purchased it in December 2022, however, today I am selling it. Hi there, I still have and love my E-PL7 as a secondary camera. The only thing I really miss for discrete shooting is a silent shutter. I know the silent shooting option exists in the newest model but not in M or A mode which are the only modes I use. So I am hoping for a E-PL11 that allows to swict to silent shutter in any mode.

      That's how I got into the Olympus and MFT systems. I added an OMD-10 Mark III. (I missed the view finder.) I just bought Panasonic G7 for video because it has a mic jack.

    • @genius1a
      @genius1a 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@geedee3817 The very reason I bought the E-PL-10, while already owning an E-PL-9 is, that Silent Shutter works in all five manual Modes now! Waay easier to choose and it remains chosen, even if you turn the camera off and on again. You still can't have it in all three Automatic modes (Automatic, Advanced Photo, Scene) though. I didn't use them anyways ^^
      While I was just testing the differences between the two cameras, I had the Panasonic 20 mm f 1.7 on one camera and the M Zuiko 45 mm f 1.8 on the other camera ... the M Zuiko lens is lightning fast for silent Focus bracketing in comparison. The Panasonic 20 mm takes forever to close the aperture. Didn't know that. Maybe I really should consider buying the M Zuiko 17 mm f 1.8 ...

    • @geedee3817
      @geedee3817 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@genius1a Thanks so much for your response Max! Glad to hear about the silent shutter. I have all 3 lenses you mentioned, the 20mm Pana, 45mm and the 17mm F1.8. Oly. The manual focus clutch alone is worth going for the 17mm over the 20mm Pana in my opinion. And it is dead silent in operation and focuses very fast.

    In my opinion the Pen series are a stand out, always have been even back in the old days when I shot half frame 35mm.
    I'm concerned about the future of the product and the possibility that what is being sold now is the last we will see.
    Names go on but when parent companies dump a division to odd owners it usually isn't a good sign.
    I love the form factor and the other products have always been first rate but I just can't put my investments into them at this time.

    I became friends with the Olympus system in 2015, when I bought the first version of the OMD EM10, which I still use for reportage photography in an educational institution and while traveling (although I also have a Nikon D750). For New Year 2021, I bought an Olympus PEN E-PL10. It cost just over $ 500 without a lens at a discount (Moscow, Russia). It is white and is in perfect harmony with the silver 17 / 2.8 and 14-150. In my opinion, the Olympus PEN E-PL10 makes FullHD video in the theater even better than the Sony Next FS 100 camcorder with an 18-200 lens. And it has a good 4K. I also like the photos in terms of color and quality, especially if you shoot indoors with an external flash. I have chosen this Olympus model among many other options from popular companies. But the matter was decided by the price, the presence of silent photography, focus stacking and the stock of my lenses (25 / 1.8, 45 / 1.8 and others) from the previous camera.

    Little difference to E-PL 9, which I have been using professionally for video. Love the quality, 4K capability, slow motion and the 3 axis IBIS is good enough for most situations (for more complex shots I use a gimbal). For quick delivery I can even adjust the colors and add effects (for example old movie with scratches) directly as I shoot.

      @@robinwong Yes Robin, I do use it for video, as I can rig it big as well as make it tiny and unobtrusive and my clients love the quality it delivers. I often have limited time for processing and this little wonder allows me to tweak the effects directly in the camera. It even allows limited color grading! I believe it was marketed wrongly for just female influencers who want to extend their smartphone capabilities, as it can do so much more!

    My E-PL 7 was my gateway to the Olympus system. I still use it, despite having two OM-D bodies. With the right lens, it is smaller and more compact than many smartphones. I recommend getting the add on EVF, which does not add a lot of bulk to the camera. Thanks, Robin for reviewing this camera, which does not get the recognition it deserves.

      Just a note that the E-PL10 does not support the old Olympus EVFs culminating in the VF-4. The E-PL8 was the last model to do so, along with other plug-in accessories like the MAL-1 macro light. You can still fit an external OVF like the VF-1 into the hotshoe, but not the EVFs.

    Latest talk is B&H and Japanese companies have discontinued it. Store withdrawal of stock does not necessarily mean end of the line but nowadays it can be risky to dally too much in this tricky and unpredictable market before getting something. Who knows a new Pen F is in the offing but hopefully not at the same price level though.

I'm with you in advocating that Olympus bring it back. Also note, as usual, no lens hood on the 40-150mm :-). You are a brave man.

    • @Centauri27
      @Centauri27 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same here--I have a Panasonic GX85 to go along with my E-M5 MkIII. There's still a certain charm to using the "rangefinder" style bodies. Also, I have a hood for my 40-150R too, but I stopped using it. Adds too much bulk to the setup. Besides, the lens is so cheap that you won't mind if something happened to it. 😊

      @@johnyutzey6504 The GX85 should've gotten more attention in the 4/3 world. It is the perfect successor to the E-P1! As for the hoods, I realize they must be deeper for the telezooms, but they are getting to be too much, as they add 1/3 to the bulk of the lens. I've stopped using the hood on both my 40-150R and 40-150 PRO.

The lack of an EVF however, and no availability of the optional EV4 (not included and no longer made) really limit the usefulness of this to me and made me question the viability of Olympus’ dedication to ongoing product support. That said, while I enjoy this camera very much including the 3 extra lenses Ive purchased for it, I reluctantly went to another manufacturer when recently deciding on, and buying my next, more advanced camera.
