I just started getting back into collecting after years, having rediscovered my childhood collection. The first thing I noticed when videos started coming across my feed was the feeling of gambling. A lot of my immediate concern about the long-term health of the hobby you expressed in the first two videos I've watched. I'm definitely glad to be a new subscriber to someone talking like a collector rather than an investor. I think a lot of "investors" forget this is a hobby geared toward kids at the end of the day. Sure, a lot of adults still collect and enjoy ripping packs. But we're mostly chasing the nostalgia of ripping a pack and pulling a Young gun when we were that age.
I own a shop and have never pushed my daughters to get into the hobby. The gambling has taken over and I’m not sure I want them getting hooked on that.
I’m 38 and I’m concerned my generation and the younger generation are just going to decimate our hobby. Most of the people in that demographic are chasing cash and “hits”. No longer doing it for the love and joy of the hobby. We need to conserve the foundational standards in the hobby.
They want to sell non rookie cards for rookie card prices. After covid the hobby was flooded with ignorant influencers out to make a buck on the new and returning collectors to the hobby. Now they selling 2nd and 3rd year cards at unbelievable prices. New player comes out and they printed 10x the amount of Tony Gwynn Rookies and sell them for 20x the price speculating they will be just as good hitter as Gwynn.
Great video. My 1st Grandchild was just born 2 days ago. I don’t plan on having him break boxes when he older. He already has a collection from me. Lol
The ‘rookie card’ label really doesn’t matter. There’s no conspiracy of hobby insiders. It’s quite ridiculous when people talk about Mickey Mouse rookie cards and Marilyn Monroe rookie cards. Time to leave the ‘rookie’ moniker behind. Let’s go with first card, first Fleer card, first Upper Deck card, etc. too many people hung up on the label ‘rookie’.
Victor, I loved the 3-part series, with Dr. Beckett, on Star Cards and comparing and contrasting the 1986 Fleer Jordan to the 1984 Star Jordan! It was fantastic to see such a thought-provoking and in-depth discussion! I suspect the manufacturers, from a profit standpoint, want more cards to be declared rookie cards, because that will be good for business. Since they print the cards, they can stamp the RC logo on as many cards as they wish! Certainly there is financial incentive, at the least, to broaden the definition of a rookie card. I appreciate your thoughts, my collecting brother! 😊👊
Very interesting concern about the hobby and your grandson. I had some vintage cards laying on my desk in grades 4 and 5 and my son was like these aren't 10's LOL so it's not crazy to think about. Another great episode!
And I do agree with that overall notion you brought up. It’s amazing how many people change their tune what is they become sponsored or industry people so to speak
Rips and Breaks arr 💯 gambling. I just started collecting again after 25 years and im shocked to see there is no disclosure or the fact it us legal. I loved opening a pack but how they do it now is 10x more gambling than roullette. At least i could pick my number in roulette and im not going against a 10 yr old 😆.
I was watching some videos of the National and felt kind of sad. When I was a kid, the whole point of going to card shows was to buy and collect your favorite players, build your PC and set build. Don't get me wrong, there was selling and trading but not as it is today. The kids in the hobby are only in it for the money and the parents encourage it. That really sucks because they will never learn about the players just how much $$ they are worth.
I gambled when I bet on a fart. I lost. That's the same as opening packs in my opinion. I'd probably get my grandson going with vintage singles if I had one. And try to teach them that opening packs can be fun in the moment, but can lead to disappointment if you don't get the cards you want.
Oh, that was great Victor. Grandfather of the year I reckon. You are right to think about your grandson and the gambling component of the hobby. Retail packs of flagship and Heritage and perhaps a quiet word to your daughter. Keep him away from the internet as long as possible. As for Mr Gray I take everything he says with a liberal dose of salt. He is on record as stating he would be fine having the majority of his wealth in cards - imagine that? I suspect the main reason he wasn't so particular about the true rookie card is that his company doesn't produce any. Lots of releases in all the big four sports and not one true rookie card in the whole lot. I can't think of another person in the hobby for whom a conversation about a true rookie card would be more uncomfortable. Finally, I'd love to know the background story to the guy who suddenly popped up with two PSA9 84 Star Jordans. Where did he get them? What's the backstory? Are they really worthy of a PSA9? How many more PSA 9's are waiting in the wings? Excellent content. Your health, sir!
Great Video. Don't know if you are a railfan, but take your grandson to Rochelle next weekend to see the Big Boy Steam Engine. It is 600 tons of awesomeness. 🙂 Peace.
@@true_rcs awesome! I thought you worked for a railroad. I have never been to museum in Rochelle, but my family is from near that area. The UP restored the Big Boy about 5 years ago. Taking it out of it's home in Cheyenne on a 2 month tour. It's quite a sight to see the largest steam engine ever built! Only going to be there on Sunday 9/8. Peace Victor! 🙂
What do you think about the 1993 BBM Ichiro? It is a fully licensed card from a legit set in his home country. Are 2001 mainstream release Ichiros actually rookies? I mean you can’t really have a true rookie in multiple years right?
I can only speak to the North American card market. Japan has an entirely different market from ours. I consider those his Japan RCs and the 2001 cards made by US card manufacturers as American RCs. If I I use my system on exported products it does not pass the test. So to respect that market I separate them.
Gambling is literally everywhere now. So you wont be able to protect him fom it. So i say yes absolutely get him in the hobby, and you just do your best to show him what actual collecting is.
Another great video, but are we truly witnessing the full erosion of independent thinking in favor of a more homogenized, guided hobby experience, all under the guise of what's "best" for our community via influencers? The Star Jordan's skyrocketing value is largely driven by these influencers, who often have direct or indirect financial agendas, manipulating narratives to fit the rookie card label. When we hear claims that the Star Jordan 9 is going to hit record prices, it effectively excludes 99.9% of collectors from the equation. It makes me wonder which direction some people's moral compass truly points.Shift+4.
🤣 I hear you. Check out this video I produced awhile back but know that I’ve changed my stance on parallel RCs, I do consider them as true RCs. Let me know if this helps SHOHEI OHTANI ROOKIE CARDS | A Deep Dive th-cam.com/video/ljMvu84iK10/w-d-xo.html
I mean...it depends right? The junk wax era rc's are way less sought after less than their 90's rare subset cards which is the players 6-12yr card. So it looks as if some of this is true. I see it in baseball and basketball.
As a purist who desires reform I struggle with that mindset. If things evolved for the better great, but it’s evolved into chaos on a bed of lies. IMO of course.
If I came across someone who didn't understand there's only 1 RC card per set I would just assume their new to the hobby or just someone who partially took part in it a few times. This will probably get Victor rolling eyes but i've always considered parallels to be a RC card if it is in fact a parallel of the real RC card. Even back in the 90's the 1993-94 stadium club first day issue parallel .. i've alway's considered those to be a RC card. However, I haven't met too many people who really thought subsets, all-star, inserts, second, third cards in the set to be a RC card. The ones who did though they just didn't know much about the hobby anyways. So, no. Just because your young and or uneducated in your hobby doesn't mean you can snub your nose at people who try to teach you. There's nothing more arrogant than that. Are kids today too entitled? lol what's really going on?
Such great insights here, thank you for sharing such astute comments with us. No eye rolling here, a couple of years ago I have deemed all parallels of the true base rookie card as legitimate. 👍🏼
Yes, you want to expose your grandson to the Hobby. Why? Because the next generations that follow are our hope for the Hobby. They an still change what we couldn't change. Change for the better.
Make the hobby about him not about everybody else it's what he likes to do is Papa is showing him the right thing just make it about him who cares about everyone else let the men take care of the men the ones that are cheating stealing and robbing just to get ahead in the game us that do it the right way we are the ones that will make it things will come to a head soon it will get better

Welcome back to the hobby Thomas! Also, welcome to the channel thanks for sharing your thoughts and for tuning in! 👍🏼
You’re the man, Victor! I hope to one day look like you when I’m a grandpa. That 3-part series with Dr. Beckett was good stuff.
🤣 thanks Jason! The good Dr brought the scholarly takes indeed.
I own a shop and have never pushed my daughters to get into the hobby. The gambling has taken over and I’m not sure I want them getting hooked on that.
I know the feeling. Thanks for sharing your thought’s! 👍🏼
Old people rock baby !!!
And in all seriousness, thank you very much for the kind words sir
🤣 Appreciate all you guys do for the hobby! Keep up the good work. 👍🏼
Keep it simple and basic. Collect who you like with your budget. Money does NOT mean happiness.
Well said Justin, thanks for sharing 👍🏼

I agree John! However, all we can control is ourselves. I love where your heart is at but hold on its gonna be a bumpy ride.

I’m never letting my son get into sports cards … he won’t collect with me and he won’t see me buying cards at all
It’s concerning what it’s turning into for sure.👍🏼
Great video. My 1st Grandchild was just born 2 days ago. I don’t plan on having him break boxes when he older. He already has a collection from me. Lol

And I do agree with that overall notion you brought up. It’s amazing how many people change their tune what is they become sponsored or industry people so to speak
I’ve often compared the hobby to a palm tree. Deeply rooted yet flexible enough to bend wherever the wind is blowing from.
they started to grade star cards... before they did, they told all their buddies to scour and get them all. pretty sure thats a shady industry.

Thanks Jeff! Yeah, I work for the Locomotive Division at a small Class 2 railroad and have gone with my family to rail museum.

Great discussion, thanks for sharing your thoughts
Thanks Orlando!
Great show Victor. Sports card nonsense Gio blocked me. Annoying imo too. I’d never recommend them.
Learned a lot thx
I understand and that’s fair I suppose, all things considered 👍🏼
Great video as always…and I’m finally the first to comment on a Victor video!
Ha love it! Congrats Justin! 👍🏼

Local news and Sports Collectors Daily reported sports cards. 👍🏼
