TB back in the mid-70s an old man taught me a trick on how to get line twist out of my spinning reels. At the end of the day take your lure off and run about 50 yards of line off behind the boat with the big motor running in idol. When you get the line ran off flip the nail and just drag the line behind the boat for a hundred yards or so and just crank it back in. Then the next time you go fishing your line will be twist free. Now I’m the old man passing that trick down. Love your videos.
There are pros/cons to any setup. I was braid-to-fluoro for almost everything except crankbaits, but now I keep some straight fluoro on utility rods where I need to switch baits frequently. As a kayak angler, braid-to-fluoro can help to offset the give from the boat itself (assuming you don’t want to upsize rod). When you set the hook, the movement of the boat actually absorbs a lot of the shock. Multiple ways to make it work🤙🏼
You have to feather the line with your hand. Plus know how to stop the line on the bail with your hand when using fluro on spinning reels. I use only spinning rods and fish bass tournaments. I use 8-15 lb fluro on all my spinning reels.
I like using braid-flouro on my finesse stuff because the lighter braid allows to cast lightweight lures out farther than if you were using straight flouro.
First and foremost, I love your videos. I’ve been watching you for years. I didn’t read through the comments and I’m sure someone has already said something to you, but just in case. The line twists on spinning gear does not occur from the drag. It occurs when the person reels and the fish is already pulling drag. Thank God for all the” and the sun is just starting come out over the tree tops” moments I’ve spent in my life. Love you brother, your truly a great teacher.
John Terrell you are 100% correct on line twist. It occurs when the drag is to loose and the fish is running taking line out and the fisherman keeps reeling at the same time. It will definitely put twist in your line. As a kid I learn this the hard way.😅
I agree just getting into bass fishing seriously. But yea even I knew that. I'm originally a catfisherman, but yea most times that happens from what you just described. It comes from the person reeling and the fish already pulling. Has happened to me a couple times with big cats on my line growing up fishing for cats with my grandpa.
Braid to leader is amazing in my opinion especially for a budget angler because not only does it last longer it also can make a budget rod feel like a lot nicer rod because the braid adds sensitivity and crispness that is found in high end rods
Braid to leader here. Like a lot of commenters, I'm a budget angler. I don't have a bunch of different rods and reels for each technique (yet) so I spool up my all purpose baitcaster (13 Fishing 7.3:1) with 40lb braid and then tie on 12, 15, 17lb leaders depending on what I'm doing. I have a couple of spinning rods and it's pretty much the same: 15lb braid to 8 or 10lb leader. I don't have the cash or time to be stripping line and respooling every time I want to switch baits. One day I hope to learn that FG knot. Until then, I'm crushing it with a double uni knot.
i started using 15 pound braid to a mono leader last year on my spinning rod and its unbelievable how much more you can feel in the rod and fish you feel. I'm going to start using braid to leader this year on my Baitcasters. the sensitivity is incredible with braid and you don't miss that tiny bite. great video
I find myself clicking on ty's videos more often than other people for information or just entertainment, great channel devoted to the sport love and passion of bass fishing
I'm still dealing with it some. I've set the hook & the leader breaks off right at the knot. 10# braid to 8# fluorocarbon. That's how I fish the lake by my house. Monofilament has too much stretch. When I fish top water baits, I tie directly to the braided line. Doesn't effect the detection of the line but I am fishing early morning or sunset. I'm going to try a 25 ft leader this Thursday morning. I was leaning towards it before I saw this but now it's going to happen. This year I've been on hefty size bass. Most are around the 5lb. mark & alot are caught on finesse baits & Ned rigs. Thanks for sharing this video. Helps this old man from changing my mind so much. Keep your line tight and again, thank you
One thing I do is have at least a 15-25ft leader. Reason is one, I much prefer having the leader line inside the spool when fighting fish up close. The other is it'll give me enough line to re-tie is needed.
I’m using 15ft of 15lb fluro to 30lb braid. For flipping and dragging jigs. Swim jigs as well. Trigs and spinnerbaits and even square bills it’s the same set up
I only like a short leader like 6ft on a finesse bait like a weightless Texas rigged plastic because I like being able to see the braid move when you get a bite. It's just way easier for me to notice a bite on braid over flouro.
Thank you for all of this info! I have been fishing straight braid for snakeheads for years now in dirty water but go straight braid in clear water too, I really gotta start tying on leaders for the creeks😅
Totally agree with you Tyler. The one thing I do differently is top water. As I do a lot of twitch, pause and shake the rod top retrieves with cicada type lures here in Australia, I've switched to a copolymer leader as it floats. It has all the advantages of fluro as in its tough and is almost as invisible. Fluro sinks and after a long pause it will pull the lure downwards ruining the presentation.
A lot of people worry about bass seeing the braid or having an extra knot but fly fishermen have been catching trout this way for decades. And they use 4 lb line with more knots and catch bigger fish that have better eyesight in clearer water. I only use braid to fluoro on my spinning rods now.
Trout fishing is done with TAPERED line in Old fashion way. The (thinner) end is 4 lbs(0,12 mm thick) and this is where you tie your hook (wet or dry fly) the other (thicker) end can be 20 or 30 lbs ( and 3 mm thick) that end is pierced with a needle that holds the mainline after you’ve poked it trough it’s tied around the (tapered) Nylon leader.
I fish a lake that has bass and trout. I use straight braid. I can't tell you the hundreds of trout I have caught on a Texas Rig with 65 pound braid. It's not the line its the action of the lure. Trout have great eyesight compared to bass, so I know they can see my braid but it doesn't phase them from biting!
Hi from Vermont, Old post, but I agree 100% on your fly fishing comparison. Some of my smallie fishing is in fairly clear waters, trying to decide on braid to fluoro combo. Unlikely that I will be catching double-digit lb bass here. Leaning towards 10# braid to 8# fluoro on a 2500 series reel. Any thoughts that you'd care to share! Cheers!
Thank you so much for this video! There aren’t a lot of videos about this! I’ve always had it on my spinning combo but always questioned it on my bait caster combo. Tyty!💯🔥
My best friend who got me into fishing beat the FG knot senseless into me. He's braid to fluorocarbon on every spinning and casting rod he owns. But I'm lazy and go straight fluorocarbon LOL. It's just easier. After 1 year of braid on a spinning rod that I caught multiple Chinook salmon on it had a lot of line twist even on the braid. I do my best not to reel when drag is engaged. But it definitely twists whenever drag is going out. Fishing light braid to light main line on a spinning rod for big salmon gives you a line twist sooner than later no matter what. I appreciate the greater sensitivity. Hearing braid go through the guides of a rod is one of the best sounds on Earth. Even though it's better, I'm just lazy LOL
I was afraid of braid to leader because of the knot strength. A friend persuaded me to try it on my spinning gear and it was a game changer. I am experimenting with braid to leader on one of my baitcasting setups now.
It is a great way to fish, I have been doing it the last few years, and the only negative to it is that leader knot. having to listen to it rack against guides on a cast and having to tie the knot in the first place. The benefits more than make up for it though.
I use braid, 20# to 30# test, on all of my reels, bait casting and spinning. I add the appropriate mono or floro leaders as called for according to technique. I use a double uni knot and do very well. I am 74 years old and feel that I would never be able to learn to tie the tv knot.
Love this video, I personally won my first tournament not too long ago and very proud! Anyways bro another banger of a video remember the grind never stop💪
Great video, Tyler. I used to use braid to fluoro on most of my rods, but as I've been upgrading my equipment I have been using braid less and less. Even with the FG knot I find that my leader knot catches on micro guides on my nice rods. Now I only use braid to fluoro on cheaper rods. I have to use straight fluoro on my higher end gear.
Exactly! Manufacturers actually pay less for the smaller guides and in turn now we cant take advantage of braid to flouro while we continue to pay higher prices for "good" rods! What a serious shame cause the advantage of better sensitivity from braid is now out the window if you can't hide the line from the fish and with no decent way to run a leader you're jacked!!
that knot shouldn't have any gaps in between each wrap of the braid. if your knot is going through your guides while under tension, or even when there is no tension, your guides can cause the braid to slip around and come closer together, which adds slack, causing the knot to become loose and either slide to a point where it will unravel, or slide off your leader entirely. always cinch your knots down tight with your fingers until there aren't any gaps folks!
I mainly use spinning gear for skipping Senkos and Neds, etc. I use 15# Power Pro slick8 braid to 8-12# mono. I came up with my own combo of knots that I can attach the two in about a minute. It sounds and looks goofy but slides through micro guides and honestly very rarely breaks. If I am snagged and pull hard and straight the line will break at the hook and not the two line connection. Now I think a contributing factor may be because I use mono (four foot leader) which is more forgiving than IMO brittle flouro. I tie an improved clinch knot loosely around my finger five or so wraps. That creates a loop. Take the braid and tie a palomar knot to that loop. Tighten down palomar. Wet mono and tighten down improved clinch. Trim and ready to fish. As said, not the smoothest knot but does not hinder a cast.
I use braid to monofilament top shot to flourocarbon. The top shot is approximately 2x rod length. The rig itself is FC. I do mostly bottom fishing in saltwater, with conventional reels. The monofilament adds elasticity.
I love braid to floro. The only time i dont is using jerbaits and baits with trebles hook. Outside that, I am all braid to floro. I have found that i get WAY less backlashed with braid also. And when i do, they much easier to get out than floro. I have found that if you are just learning how to use a baitcaster, start with braid. Its just easier and far less discouraging. I have a hand full of people push back on me with using braid on my baitcasters, but i just love it.
@@wavyjaygaming741 I tried to just use floro for the longest time. I eventually got so fed up with floro that i just use braid to floro. Its get the job done.
I saw it first with the guys from Tacticalbassin about 5 years ago. I use it on every set up. I also fish very clear water and have no issue getting bit. Only time I see an issue is when it's really windy. Braid is light and catches wind
8 carrier braids are also rounder AND slicker nowadays If you’re getting older the thinner (suppler) line is hard to see Two other reasons that tying braid and wind do Not combine well.
This is the first and only braid to flouro knot I learned to tie and haven’t tried it out on the water yet, going to give it a go soon but good to hear your have no issues with the knot. Gives me a little reassurance, although a lot of the big TH-cam guys like an fg knot most the time but I can’t tie that
I used the double uni for a good while, it’s a great knot for sure. However for the last probably 5 years I’ve used an FG, have never looked back since. Once you know how to tie it properly you can do it pretty quickly and easily, but to me the biggest advantage to it is how strong and thin it is. I have a few rods with micro guides and that knot is the only one that’ll go through them. That’s my take on it. Uni uni knot is great though! Unless you have micro guides lol
Tyler, another great video. I have been using braid to Florocarbon more and more on my bait casters but now will change one of my spinning reels to braid/Florocarbon. Also, I just got my first ARK THORP bait casting rod. A 7'3" MH Money Maker. What a sweet rod!
I never use straight mono, fluoro or other type clear line. There's no reason to. The braid I have on my 3 most used reels is 3, 5 & 5 years old and I fish those rods 4-6 times a week for 8 months of the year. Hell, some of the 5yr old braided line is almost white>gray from being bleached out by the sun. I just take a mark-up pen and blacken the last 5ft or so to Fluoro/mono. As for knots, Double-Uni. Haven't had a break in years, literally. The only time it fails is when a buddy/family uses one of my rods and wind nests it with a 1/2oz+ lure on the end and it will give out. Other than that 15lb braid > 10lb Fluoro just hauled in 20 Striped bass 19-29 inches in moderate current in just the last week. 10lb braid>8lb Fluro 7 bass 5-9lb+ on 3/8 hair jigs, Yo-Zuri popper and flukes. I use Japanese fluoro, their the only ones that actually test the line strength and it always matches lab/home testing. the others seen to take a 15lb line and call it 12lb and 20 and call it 15 or something. If the Japanese call it a 10lb line, it's a f'ing 10lb line.
Thanks for all the videos you make. I have learned a lot from you. Always informative and interesting. But here’s another question...when should I use straight flouro other than around docks? Thanks for your time!
Great info. And video 📹. I had switched all my reels to braid haven't noticed any difference if catching fish. Don't have to worry about not breaking line.
I used to use straight braid on my main rod for about everything. The only time I think it made a difference was sunny days with top water. I use Daiwa high vis braid with a few feet of floro on my $35 Uglystick Gx2 for worms, and same braid with some mono on a bait thrift shop baitcaster for top water.
I prefer using the crazy alberto for connections instead of the FG knot. It is not quite as strong. But has better abrasion resistance than the fg knot.
Same here. Been using braid since Firewire Fusion in the 90's? I tend to use slightly lighter rods because of no stretch. Tried straight flouro a few times and hate it. Can't feel the baits the same. Like a wet noodle. Even a snag, you have to move rod three feet till line tightens. Braid I can feel the fish breathe on the bait. Forget about spinning with the flouro twist and tangles.
@@Cornelius798 Respectfully, had just the opposite experience. I fished straight braid for many years but then added a fluorocarbon leader to all my rigs and saw my catches go up significantly. I kayak fish in small lakes in Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦 (5 or 6 days a week, May to Oct) so maybe it's due to the water clarity?? Not sure but I'm sticking to using fluorocarbon leaders.
@@Mongo6186 i hated tieing the fg knot so decide on double blood knot worked great on spinning set up. Not so much on bait caster with micro-guides. went back to straight co polymer. i personally think its the best of best worlds.
Love your straight forward information videos an dthis was another good one. I wasn't clear as to how you wish your jerkbaits with your baitcasters is it braid with a fluoro leaders? Kindly note that Salt Strong has done comparative tests of the abrasion resistance of mono vs. braid and the mono came out tops. Also I think the invisibility of braid is over-rated and it becomes an advantage one the line is not silhouetted on or near the surface.
I am just “coming back to fishing” lol. Had been straight mono my whole life. No leader. Come to find out, my dad started using leaders somewhere along the way. So I started doing that. Recently started using all fluoro mainline. Like it but have definitely noticed more line twist issues than what I had with mono. Not opposed to braid, but have not decided to try it yet. Have used braid with guides’ rods and one time got a real bad knot somehow, who knows how, when I tossed it and I think the hook got gummed up in the line on the cast. But do see why the guides use straight braid with popping corks and leader on their customer-use rods.
Sup Tyler. Great info. I just use florocarbon. I tried the braid to floro, but never got knot perfect, so lost lot of 4lb+ bass. My last cast is just with 1/2 oz weight to get any twists out. But I'm in RI so those bass are rare lol.ty tc
I understand the reason, I just really struggle to tie the knots needed to do it so I just fish straight line whatever I'm using. I struggle doing it when not on the water I know it would be even more difficult in my kayak. I practice and would like to save the money but hell I waste a lot practicing. Any suggestions?
I use the Albright knot on my rigs with braid to flouro/ mono. It's easy to tie and I use a drop of super glue to reinforce my tie. With some practice I can swap leaders in less than a few minutes. Hope this helps.
Only time I even consider a leader is a steel one for catfish, which is very rare indeed. Otherwise, depending on the rod and reel, I use straight 65lb braid, twelve to 15 or more fl, or plain mono at anywhere from 2lbs to 12-17lbs. I do still manage to catch a fish on occasion without over complicating things. Use a rod and reel, a cane pole, some line of some kind with a hook tied to it. Anything past that is starting to lead to it not being much fun anymore.
I only have one casting set up that’s straight fluoro and I hated it. But that’s because I’ve been using braid to fluoro so long. I figured I’d give it a shot like the pros but didn’t like it at all. I use the Alberto knot and haven’t seen any difference between going braided main line or fluoro main.
Had some troubles this labor day weekend with the floro breaking at the double uni knot, the knot is still there but the braid may have cut into it. Heave weighted drop shot probably added to much stress I would guess.
Hey bud! Love your content! I have a question for you. My wife cannot throw a baitcaster so I am buying her another spinning rod/reel and need something for her to be able to throw a wider variety of baits including some heavier swim baits. I bought her a Dobyns Sierra SA704SF MH/F. The line rating says 10-20lb. 1/4-1oz lures. Does the same line weight recommendations apply to braid as well? Thanks!
The next big innovation in line will be the elimination of knots between braid and fluorocarbon and use of a bonding agent and/or a small micro sleeve each line end can feed into and be sealed with heat or epoxy to bond the two lines together. People hate tying knots and a good engineer will put an end to the cumbersome knots. I am working on some innovations now to solve this problem.
I tried braid to flouro, it works for pitching around docks. But i found it to be more of true PITA on a rod/bait that was to be casted. I only use straight flouro for 90% of my setup. Ill run braid for frogs and if im flipping into matted weeds thats it. After a handful of wind knots with braid i run flouro most of the time.
Did you mean braid to mono for topwater? Because you said braid to flouro, and I highly advise never to do that with a topwater that will be paused. I remember one day I was fishing a popper on braid to mono and was killing them, unfortunately I broke off and had to retie a leader, well, I forgot my mono back at home and all i had was flouro. I tried it, this was really clear Ohio strip mine water so I wanted something other than straight braid, and because the flouro sinks it would sink straight down on the pauses and get tangled in the front treble. Made the popper almost unfishable.
and big holes in fishes mouth also reduces their ability to effectively feed and can end up killing them. a marine biologist in my neck of the woods has studied the impact of catch and release on suck feeders (like bass) and they can't create the same suction to inhale after large hooks injure their mouths.
I’ve had a reel with braid for 5 years now. I keep it in the dark when not in use. To yozuri leader. Never break off anymore I have to cut unless it’s like a sheepshead or a shark, metal something like that.
My biggest question is how long does my fluoro leader have to be? I absolutely hate casting that knot through my rod guides and sometimes the knot catches on one of the guides.
I use two rods. One is a light power spinning rod and the other is a medium power spinning rod. I was told to use light line something around 6lb flouro (which I am currently using) I'm confused on what pound line to actually use. I always hear different answers. I usually use a wacky rig on the light power rod and I'll use anything else on my medium power rod such as jerk baits, spinner baits, top water, etc. So what pound line should I use? Also, I hear that flouro and mess with the action on top waters since the line sinks. I was thinking about using a leader for my top water. What kind of line and pound should I use and how long should the leader be?
What kind of reels do you use? Make and model? I like Shimano reels myself but I am new to the sport /hobby.. I am transitioning my current rods from cheap free rods to buy higher quality...
Next up hopefully is a video on leader length for all these setups. I hear everyone talking about just using the leader but no one says how much they like to use for certain things and why they use that certain length leader.
Seems like everyone uses anywhere between 5-10ft leader majority of the time..on my setups I use no less than 20ft and sometimes longer.. hopefully this helps you out some 👍
I use one rod length. Granted I can tie the knot quickly so when it gets low I just re-tie. My problem with long leaders is it can catch casted line as it’s leaving the spool. So I try to keep a shorter leader. I will use a longer leader when I need something to get deep.
For flipping and using a braid to floro how many wraps to you use. It looks like a huge knot. I thought the bigger the lines the less wraps you need to tie.
So I’m just starting bass fishing and I don’t know what I should fish with my spinning reel setup (hasn’t gotten here yet)… I bought a *Shimano Nasci 2500 FC and a Shimano Sellus 7.1 Medium/Fast rod.* Guy from work said I can do whopper plopper top swimbait, however I will be bank/shore fishing and want something I can switch to that won’t get caught up in vegetation in the water. Those deep divers look amazing but, I’m assuming those are for deeper open waters on a boat… what other swimming lures can I use with a spinning reel setup. I like the idea of casting and retrieving and using some finesse to catch a hungry aggressive fat boy… Also should I just get fluorocarbon being a brand new bass fisher?
I mainly fish in ponds. I throw weightless plastics: senkos, lizards, and crawdads. Have had good success. Also floating Rapala minnows that swim shallow. Twitch on the surface and bass love it. It's hard to throw lures in neighborhood ponds because they are choked with weeds, except early in the season.
I've been very successful on using a FG knot for all my spinning gear. But when I try for a short leader pitch and flip set up on a baitcaster I've always lost the knot and broke off. How many times do you wrap your FG knot for baitcasters? I normally do 22-25 total wraps spinning applications.
I definitely see the benefits…however, I never fish a leader I just prefer the security of fishing with one line…I’ve had success with leaders, but I’ve also had a couple fail(user error for sure) but that just always has me paranoid…and there’s so many variables that are in play when fighting a fish and one less thing to worry about makes me feel more secure…I also fish a spinning rod often, does the braid to leader help prevent line issues especially when skipping baits a lot?
I think so. I've not really ever had twist issues. I use an Albright knot usually and the only time it breaks is when the hook is stuck in rocks or around a submerged limb that I can't free it from, never from a fish. I usually to get a stick off the ground to wrap the line around to yank it free, I have almost no fear of a fish breaking the knot.
I've been killin em the past couple weeks on a swim jig they've been chasing bait balls around the lake near my house I'm heading out to catch some more after dinner
There have been many positive advancements in fishing rod's, reels and lures over the past 40 some years , but one that has made it so confusing for most people has been floral carbon line. There were many things said about it initially that were simply not true. I will only use it on a big cast real Or as a leader on my braided line when using a spinning real. Anything heavier than the diameter of a good 8 pound test line is going to create problems on a spinning real unless you have one with a big spool. I still will go back to a good mono line Many times to avoid all the problems with floral carbon . Funny how we could catch fish prior to floral Carbon. A lot of the changes to rod's, karma and knots have had to come about because of the problems floral presents. Not worth it for the new angler.
Depends on the knot you want to use. FG knot works best with the braid being a smaller diameter then the leader so it can dig into it. I’m using 8lb braid to 20Lb fluro the 8lb braid actually breaks at 22lbs so I’m like why knot lol
Do you not compromise the actual overall tensile strength in doing that? I feel straight braid or straight fluoro is better than cutting it and attempting to splice them together. Especially on hard hook sets. Does it not slip or break at the knot?
As long as you tie a good connection knot, you don't have to worry about slippage at all. Knots like the FG knot and the Alberto knot are tie in a way where they dig into the leader material locking them in place. So the harder you pull, the tighter the knot becomes. The main thing to look out for is ensuring that the knot is tied correctly. Thats where you get slippage and breaking issues.
Just left braid and flourocarbon for all mono. Lost fish with mono...so far...zero. I'm tired of losing fish to flour and tired of line mishaps with braid. And hey... saving money too.
🤔🧐Rod power and rod action are not the same thing. There are no heavy action rods, only heavy power, action is slow, moderate, fast, etc... love your videos but this is something thats really quite simple and that I hear far too much and it confuses new anglers... or anyone really. Not trying to be argunentative, you're still in the top 5 fishing channels i watch and i rarely miss a video. Also I think im backwards, I started bass fishing with braid to flouro or mono on everything, now I've been working in some straight flouro for a couple years and im a big fan for certain baits or situations. Also have 1 set up with straight mono that I use for small topwaters mostly, but it also has another use I don't really want to mention here😉
I get a kick when people who use straight Fluro on their baitcasters because fish can see line. But they all say braid to leader is important on their finesse setups. So picky fish don’t see line? Idk I use braid to fluro on everything but glide baits. I want the little stretch there because i suck

I like using braid-flouro on my finesse stuff because the lighter braid allows to cast lightweight lures out farther than if you were using straight flouro.

True, and also you can use 1 combo for different applications by just adding on a leader .
I don't disagree but just be aware that braids sensitivity only works under tension. Flouro can give you much better sensitivity under slack line.
@@txg1275 I had no idea about that. Thank you for letting me know
Braid to leader here.

I'm going to start using braid to leader this year on my Baitcasters. the sensitivity is incredible with braid and you don't miss that tiny bite. great video
What weight leader are you using for 15lb braid?
I find myself clicking on ty's videos more often than other people for information or just entertainment, great channel devoted to the sport love and passion of bass fishing
My understanding of fishing lines and rods has increased exponentially watching your videos, thanks!
Keep your line tight and again, thank you
You need a mono leader on some topwaters that you "work", like a popper or walking bait. Otherwise limp braid gets tangled in the hooks too much.
One thing I do is have at least a 15-25ft leader. Reason is one, I much prefer having the leader line inside the spool when fighting fish up close. The other is it'll give me enough line to re-tie is needed.
I do the same. For me it's two or three arms length of leader.
@@stpbasss3773 under circumstances, water clarity, depth, wind, structure. 6ft lead is too short. Coming from the great lakes area though.
I usually do 6ish feet. If I get snagged on rock and the line breaks at the knot, I'm not leaving too long of a piece out there for eternity.
Yes Mono leader with top water
Hi from Vermont,
Old post, but I agree 100% on your fly fishing comparison.
Crazy alberto. In a few years of tying, maybe once or twice has broken at the leader for me.
It is a great way to fish, I have been doing it the last few years, and the only negative to it is that leader knot. having to listen to it rack against guides on a cast and having to tie the knot in the first place. The benefits more than make up for it though.
Great video. Your confidence helps our confidence and reassures us weekend guys.
Thanks for the thoughtful approach to this subject.
Perfect. I have been wondering about this for the past year or two. Now I feel better about trying it.
@vudo2555 There are plenty of high-end rods with standard guides !
that knot shouldn't have any gaps in between each wrap of the braid. if your knot is going through your guides while under tension, or even when there is no tension, your guides can cause the braid to slip around and come closer together, which adds slack, causing the knot to become loose and either slide to a point where it will unravel, or slide off your leader entirely. always cinch your knots down tight with your fingers until there aren't any gaps folks!
Great video like always! Keep up the quality content.
Do you use straight Floro For crank baits then ?
@@wavyjaygaming741 I tried to just use floro for the longest time. I eventually got so fed up with floro that i just use braid to floro. Its get the job done.
@@cvleng0822 yeah imma try braid to floro for cranks and just run a long leader and try different sizes out and see what works best
I saw it first with the guys from Tacticalbassin about 5 years ago. I use it on every set up. I also fish very clear water and have no issue getting bit. Only time I see an issue is when it's really windy. Braid is light and catches wind
Yup. And sometimes it's a pain in the arse!!
8 carrier braids are also rounder AND slicker nowadays
If you’re getting older the thinner (suppler) line is hard to see
Two other reasons that tying braid and wind do Not combine well.
Wind is a killer with braid ... makes it difficult to watch my line for bites when I use soft plastics.
I use double uni for all line to line knots. Don't seem to have a problem with them failing either. The knot is super easy for me is all.
This is the first and only braid to flouro knot I learned to tie and haven’t tried it out on the water yet, going to give it a go soon but good to hear your have no issues with the knot. Gives me a little reassurance, although a lot of the big TH-cam guys like an fg knot most the time but I can’t tie that
Me too for years now...i always double the braid with a surgeons loop first
@@RippinLips864 they do it to establish authority like it's a right of passage or something.
@@Tylerbone96agreement with that
Tyler, another great video.
Thanks for your time!
a video of how you do your FG Knots would be great.
Love your vids! Learning a lot bro. Keep it up! Please
Best way is yours
@dlmsarge8329
@@Cornelius798fish aren't dumb...
I just started doing this. However, I was thinking, why not do braid to coplymer? Better abrasion and cheaper.
You absolutely can. Braid to mono is something I do a lot of. Use what you like if it catches you fish, keep doing it.
Straight fluoro with a Jerkbait
Braid is in no way invisible, not at all!!! You have your info on the invisibility of braid all wrong, as it the most visible of the three lines!!!!
How long of a fluorocarbon leader with braid?
How long are you making the fluro leaders on these braid to Fluor leader setups?
Hey another great connection knot to tie is the blood knot. Tactical bassin has a video on it.
Sup Tyler.
Most people i talked to that bass fish use this
what know do you use when going from braid to mono?
I wonder if a drop of crazy glue on a leader knot would strengthen and protect it?
I tie on bout 15-20 YDs of flouro on my braid. It saves time from having to make leaders after cut offs etc.. Intercoastal fishing is mainly what I do
Had some troubles this labor day weekend with the floro breaking at the double uni knot, the knot is still there but the braid may have cut into it.
Thanks!
Yes it applies with braid as well
That reminds me when can we expect to see a Bruin Reel review vid?
A lot of good information 👍
Medium light fast action 10lb braid to 10-15lb fluoro leader seems to be totally fine with a crazy Alberto knot
I use braid to mono with no issues that I can tell. Catch plenty of big fish and save money. I only use flouro for finesse in clear water.
What weight florocarbon would you use on 20 lb braid ? Thanks , bob
and big holes in fishes mouth also reduces their ability to effectively feed and can end up killing them. a marine biologist in my neck of the woods has studied the impact of catch and release on suck feeders (like bass) and they can't create the same suction to inhale after large hooks injure their mouths.
what weight florocarbon leader would you put on 20 and 30 lb braid?
I’ve had a reel with braid for 5 years now. I keep it in the dark when not in use. To yozuri leader. Never break off anymore I have to cut unless it’s like a sheepshead or a shark, metal something like that.
My biggest question is how long does my fluoro leader have to be? I absolutely hate casting that knot through my rod guides and sometimes the knot catches on one of the guides.
I solved my line twist headache by switching to a micro swivel and a small fluoro leader
Do you ever worry about the knot damaging your eyelets, I’ve had to replace several because the knot chipped my eyelets
What leader length do you like? I was trying 30lb braid to 15lb fluoro today and the knot really got caught up in the eyelets
How many feet of the fluoro carbon do you use? Not sure if i missed that in the video or not.
Maybe I missed it in the video. With spinning reels, never wind the reel when the drag is letting line out. This is the worst for twisted line.
Next up hopefully is a video on leader length for all these setups. I hear everyone talking about just using the leader but no one says how much they like to use for certain things and why they use that certain length leader.
Seems like everyone uses anywhere between 5-10ft leader majority of the time..on my setups I use no less than 20ft and sometimes longer.. hopefully this helps you out some 👍
On a spinning reel, I never want the knot on the spool.
Double uni knot has never failed me at all.
i have a question. are you able to just go pure braid?
I've been very successful on using a FG knot for all my spinning gear. But when I try for a short leader pitch and flip set up on a baitcaster I've always lost the knot and broke off. How many times do you wrap your FG knot for baitcasters? I normally do 22-25 total wraps spinning applications.
Are you still tieing the fg knot for the braid to mono?
By no means am I knowledgeable but I have never tried a leader line of any kind no reason just haven't great video thanks
It’s Bass fishing………..!
GT knot………. Easiest and quickest/ strongest knot you need to know. Had never failed me,
How long of a leader do you prefer?
Hey Tyler when will u have more hooded shirts available
About 3 weeks. I’ll make an announcement on the channel
Has anyone used a swivel from your main line to attach a leader? Just curious if anyone has any luck.
I like braid to flourocarbon on my spinner because flouro is more stealthy but casts bad. And braid casts like a dream.
What do you use to do that
Would 10lb braid to 8lb flouro be alright
Depends on the knot you want to use. FG knot works best with the braid being a smaller diameter then the leader so it can dig into it. I’m using 8lb braid to 20Lb fluro the 8lb braid actually breaks at 22lbs so I’m like why knot lol
Grease slows down bearings so make sure to degrease them and just add a tiny bit of oil. will spin faster than anything.
@@ZenithPotentia ohhhh okay, I see. Thank you for the explanation!!
Just left braid and flourocarbon for all mono. Lost fish with mono...so far...zero. I'm tired of losing fish to flour and tired of line mishaps with braid. And hey... saving money too.
I use both, depends on how the fish are biting.
Also have 1 set up with straight mono that I use for small topwaters mostly, but it also has another use I don't really want to mention here😉
I use CXX as a leader on everything except frogs
I get a kick when people who use straight Fluro on their baitcasters because fish can see line. But they all say braid to leader is important on their finesse setups. So picky fish don’t see line? Idk I use braid to fluro on everything but glide baits. I want the little stretch there because i suck
Me either i want the dumb ones
