I have a 14 Silverado w/5.3L. 6 spd & 73k miles. I bought it used w/12k miles. I did have the infamous AC condenser replacement done but other than that, it's been solid. I tow a 6k pound camper, so I've had the trans fluid flushed twice. I put on a B&M stacked plate style trans oil cooler on it somewhere around 50k miles to keep the trans temps from going too high while towing. I bought the Silverado BECAUSE my last truck was an 07 Hemi Ram. I think that truck was built on a late Fri afternoon of a holiday weekend.

Rams are all built on Fridays apparently. Our outfit has several. 2013 and newer. Most all suffer transmission failures/replacement. Cam/lifter failure. Exhaust leaks. Seats fall apart. They’re horrible but since they’ll replace all of it under warranty it makes sense to our bean counters; except when you’re left stranded.

    • @TheNuclearBolton
      @TheNuclearBolton 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah, the interior is not subtle at all. I feel like the extra bends and squared edges in the interior take up more space and offer no practicality whatsoever. I wish the console was inset a little further in and the center console was a bit lower with rear ac vents as well like the f-150 series. Other than that it is ok. The suspension is not the best either. A lot of rollover and body sway in the rear. Needs aftermarket shocks

My 2015 5.3L at 62K miles, no problems so far. Does not burn oil. I pull a 6000 lb tag along camper, plow snow, pull my utlity trailer all the time. The truck is always pulling or pushing something. The rare times that we are not towing or plowing the mpg is phenomenal for a truck, up to 25 mpg. The only failure so far is the battery died and before that the radion was acting funky which it turns out is related to a failing battery. The 4 to 8 cylinder transition is seamless as far as I can tell. I bought the truck used from a Chevrolet dealer and this truck was coming off lease from one of their techs and we had the printout of all the service records. An excellent used truck.

However when I bought it, I did almost an entire fluid flush and replace on the truck. Have had basically no issues. Alternator and upper control arms are about it. AC still works great and trans only has a hard shift if it’s a cold day and it hasn’t warmed up yet. So rarely an issue. Overall I’ve been very happy with my 14.

I did replace the brakes with slotted rotors and carbon ceramic brakes at 74K because one of the original fronts had worn badly. I also had to replace the thermostat at 75K along with the sensor as I had a nil reading on the gauge etc. Those two items are all the actual repairs I have done. I did have the trans flushed when I bought it in 2020. I have the Chevy dealer do the oil changes since they are the cheapest in town and they check the recall situation etc when I bring it in. I have a copy of the GM Global Connect history for this truck and it has no other repairs listed.

Transmission issues galore, it bent the pushrods on cylinder one (twice!), the oil pan started leaking oil, the rear axle seals went out twice, it had its injectors replaced on bank one, and it also had the transmission oil cooler fail. Stay far away from these trucks! GM will not help you with any of the issues and they will financially cripple you!

I had to rid myself of my 2018 Silverado 1500 with a 5.3l V-8 and less than 30k miles on it. The 5.3l and the 6.2l gas engines come equipped with the AFM system that shuts off 4 out of the 8 cylinders in light load conditions. I lost 2 months of driving while the dealership troubleshot the problem which turned out to be a scored camshaft because the lifters on one side of the engine were seized. All of the work was done under warranty so there was no cost to me except for a loss on the trade in. GM provided a loaner vehicle since it was still under warranty so I was relieved by that. I traded the 1500 in on a used 2018 2500 HD model with the 6.6l Duramax diesel and Allison transmission combination. Much happier now, the truck runs and shifts much better. Active Fuel Management (AFM), formerly known as Displacement on Demand (DoD), and now renamed Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) is not a well designed system in my opinion since I only saw 1-2 mpg improvement when it worked. If you buy an AFM equipped Chevy you may want to plan ahead on an AFM delete kit which will run you ~$5-6k installed. Those kits include a new camshaft, lifters, pushrods, etc. and are offered by a few hot rod shops like Summit. Good luck.

My 2 cents : 2013 silverado 1500 LT 148K miles all original but for 1 oxygen sensor, one antisway bar link !!!! Truck has never spent a night in a garage, I live in western Wisconsin, Bought the truck brand new on ebay in a southern state so NO block heater. I don't scrap windows, I remote start the truck and drink coffee till all the ice has melted. Trucks runs and drives like new. I do change my oil timely but I am still running on the original set of plugs and the brakes also are original. I did do a transmission service at 75K and will do another soon with plugs and front brakes pads to be preemptive before the 2020 first flakes start flying. I am in awe of this American product ! Also I seldom get less than 18 mpgs for a combination of city/ highway driving. At 20 below, it's humming by the time the third piston hits tdc, I'll never drive anything else, unless I hit the lottery.

Have a 2017 GMC Yukon with the 5.3 and the six-speed transmission. The only problem so far with 41,000 miles has been a leaky intake manifold gasket. Replaced under warranty. If your transmission goes bad, find a transmission shop with lots of experience with these six speed GM transmissions. Near me, I have a transmission rebuild shop that can rebuild one of these transmissions with beefy aftermarket parts that will be much better than the original factory parts. The torque converter fins are one of the parts that fail on these transmissions. Once that happens, it can do a lot of damage inside the transmission. Disabling the cylinder deactivation mode is also a good idea for a smoother shifting transmission and a better driving experience all around. Installing a quality catch can is also a good idea on these direct injection engines.

Only problem I ever had outta that truck was front wheel bearings, which is pretty common with those trucks. I never even had the 4 spd trans to slip or anything & I pull a 16' tandem axle trailer a lot. It even had all 8 factory original coil packs & original fuel pump. The rockers did rust out pretty bad tho, which is also common.

I’ve heard that there was an issue with the torque converter with the earlier models that was fixed in 2016 if I’m not mistaken (the 6 speed). People who choose to buy the Silverado / Sierra from where I live tend to install an additional 40k units aftermarket transmission cooler and a high performance thermostat plus a tune for the fans and the cooling system in general. So far, I haven’t heard any complaints. I might consider getting one but I’ll have to do more research.

  • @ElectricBlueIX

The reason the 2017 model had so many transmission complaints is due to the switch to the 8 speed auto. The fluid they were using from the factory allowed moisture to build up and causing the shudder/hard shifts. My wife’s 2017 Denali has the 8 speed and we experienced the same thing. We bought it with 62k miles and noticed it shortly after. My buddy is a GM tech and they finally revised the fluid so we had him flush the transmission and got the new fluid. No problems since then. The only thing I notice now is when the transmission isn’t warmed up it will downshift a little odd coming to a stop. Once it’s warmed up, no issues.

drive it 2200 miles or more the last week and never burned a drop of oil and never missed a beat.
one thing I have noticed is the engine seems to have a very slight vibration at certain times around 1600 rpms is that just a normal thing?
soon as it going past 1800 or below 1600 no noises at all sounds so smooth and even the sound you do here is so faint I think it's just normal

Sophal Teav Wow! It sounded worse in the trucks than anything else. GM used the same 8 speed for the C7 Corvette, Camaro, and performance Cadillac models and the complaints were it didn’t shift fast enough, not these problems.

The 6l80e in my 2014 4x4 LTZ is kinda of klunky, especially downshifting to first. Not nearly as smooth as my 2009 Z71 6l80e. I bought a handheld hypertech tuner, I moved the torque converter "slip/stall" to be a little firmer and added line pressure, 35k miles on the 93 tune and no problems. I believe the increased line pressure and changing the shift response helps a lot. Kinda like putting corvette servos in the old 4l60e work trucks. You end up saving your clutch packs when you have less slip and a more firm engagement.

Hard shifts, occasional slip from 1st to 2nd and very loud thunking sounds when shifting. Dealer did a transmission fluid swap cause they said that the factory put the wrong fluid in it. 2017 Silverado- On 3rd starter, cat blew out at 35 k miles, head unit replaced after all speakers stopped working (including door chime, speakers only worked when the steering wheel was being turned), burns a lot of oil (told that’s normal I guess) trans cooler thermostat got stuck and needed replaced at 60k miles. Trailer brake controller acts up sometimes and dings at me telling me there is a fault even when there isn’t even a trailer connected. When I did my last oil change (72k miles) I noticed it is starting to leak oil. Still love the truck though.

The reason the 2014 models had an AC problem is pretty simple! Someone at the factory decided not to do their job. There was no fluid put in them. Mine was one of them! BTW my 2014 GMC ran up 99,000 miles in three years. Other than oil changes and tire rotations, everything, other than Freon, was still 100% factory original. Yes, even the tires and brakes.

Loved my 2018 Silverado Z71 and used it for work in the oilfield and did very well with only oil changes and basic maintance and replaced brakes all the way around once till I reached 120,000 miles and then it all went to hell, needed wheel bearings, engine trouble, and while driving down highway stopped at highway intersection turned and trans started slipping and boom transmission went out without warning. I was so hurt and disappointed ended up trading it in for a new 2021 GMC AT4 with the 3.0 duramax and Alison 10 speed transmission. I’m trying something new and praying for better turnout then before, wish me luck…….

Transmission is the biggest issue on these trucks. That's why GM went to use Ford 10 speed on the new trucks now. Seems to be a better transmission, with few issues here and there.
