Hi, I’m Peter Baker and in this video, I’m going to teach you ‘how to make your voice deeper’.
    0:00 Introduction
    0:44 Get fit
    1:12 Feel good about yourself
    1:54 Yawn! Yawn! Yawn!
2:28 Believe in what you are talking about
    3:05 Regular voice exercises
    3:58 Find your tension spots
5:05 Exercise diaphragm and abdominal muscles
    5:31 The invisible straw
    6:01 Use your chest cavities!
FIRST of all, you need to get and maintain physical fitness - get loads of sleep, eat good natural foods, be fully hydrated drinking pure water. Be active and do regular exercise. I don’t want to sound like a finger-wagging nanny but think about it. If you want to optimise your body for anything, whether it’s running a marathon or developing a nice rich, resonant voice, get in shape!
Next, feel good about yourself. A higher, or even nervous voice could be a sign of a lack of self-confidence, or a reaction to some bad things in your past. I’ve worked with people with light, nervous voices when they have the physical potential to have lovely deep, rich voices. Sometimes I find the reason is not just cute shyness, but they’ve actually had a rubbish childhood and upbringing with parents continually telling them to shut up, or school bullies draining their confidence for years. Relax - you have a right to be here. Know that most people genuinely want to hear what you have to say and will give you time to talk.
Yawn, even if you’re not tired. Yawn, and yawn again, and stretch for good measure. Do this to relax the neck muscles and the vocal cords. Relaxation is the key to a good, deep, mature voice quality. After a good night sleep, listen to how lovely and soft and smooth and deep your voice is, compared with after a tense business meeting when you’re all stressed out! Come on, let’s see that yawn!
Believe in what you are talking about. Totally feel passionate about every word you say. What’s THIS got to do with voice depth? Strangely, when you believe deeply about something, your voice sounds deeper too. Experienced detective psychologists know that intonation and depth of speech is often an indication of truth or lie. Convince yourself: you speak the truth. You ARE the truth. The truth is YOU.
OK, now the depth of anyone’s voice is down to the thickness of the vocal cords and the size and shape of their body, but you can ENHANCE the richness and depth of your voice by simple exercises. Hum or chant low, very low, while relaxing and standing, not sitting. Don’t crush the diaphragm, don’t strain your voice; simply take in deep breaths and hum comfortably, 10 minutes a day minimum. I do this low humming on my regular car journeys between recording studios, it makes the most of my time. Low humming is such a wonderful and easy way to get a richer, deeper voice, but don’t strain it, please. If it’s uncomfortable, just go up a little until you feel relaxed and OK.
If you find doing anything low a problem, you may have tension issues. So, here’s how to find the problem areas on your body. Pretend you’re in an extremely tense situation, say on stage or a live TV show. Really imagine it! All those people looking at you! Now, identify the muscles that are tense. They’ll be in your neck area, your throat and shoulders. Actively pinpoint these areas and relax them. Once you have relaxed them fully, and you can test this by humming low. Then you need to create a “mental pre-set” for this condition. We all have various “pre-set” voices. One to talk to little kids, one for the boss, one for your partner, and so on. So, you need to teach yourself to easily and quickly “snap” into this relaxed pre-set on will for talking in your new deeper, smooth voice.
As well as being generally physically fit, you need a good volume of air to speak, and it needs to be strong and long lasting too.

Can you please explain me this? In the morning (and sometimes during the day when I'm very relaxed) my voice is super deep and full, no cracking, one of the deepest bass voices I've heard. But during the day it goes to a high pitched male news reporter voice while he's excited. Is that all due to anxiety that makes my upper body stiffer and stiffer during the day? Also, could mucus have something to do with it?

    • @Voiceovermasterclass
      @Voiceovermasterclass  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@DataLog Mucus is nothing to do with it, tensions IS! All the pressures of the day increase the tensions around the neck, shoulders and vocal apparatus. Have a work out at the gym, shower, relax and that nice resonant voice will return...until you open your work emails again!

Fitness isn't my problem, I'm fitness model level fit (six pack and everything XD), but anxiety probably is. In fact, i've found that most peoples shoulder problems and back issues are primarily caused by stress and anxiety multiplied by sedentary computer lifestyle.

Totally impressed by your video. I have been watching videos to help my wife find exercises to deepen her voice. 5 videos all around 7-8 minutes. Four of these videos had one minute of not very good information and most of the video as "ads" pushing their stuff or telling stories or explain WHY I wanted a deeper voice.
You video had some intro and then got to the point and everything you said was clear and useful. Impressive. Thank you.
My only complaint is the pdf is somehow a Googlewebarchive which cannot be opened by Preview in Mac. Minor compared to the just click and you get it without email. Fabulous attitude you have. Thank you again. Doc

Hi Peter, big thanks from a friend from the Philippines. I'm starting to do voice over works for my job and most of us Filipinos didn't grew up having a deep, resonating voice. I started to notice this when I visited the United States for the first time and heard my cousins speak; those who are younger than me speaks better, gramatically and resonantly. Of course English not being our everyday language didn't help me, and now I recognize that I have to work doubly hard to compensate; and I'm willing to do exactly that to get better.
Thanks so much for all your efforts to record this. You are heaven sent for people like me who wants to improve ourselves on the voice department. More power and God bless.

I'm 19. Thank you sir I've been looking for solutions for years and I was already thinking of a surgical solution if it was possible. Before I watched the video. Thank you

This man : How to get a deeper voice
Me being a true oktavist : Hold my beer...
Lol, good video overall. What works for me (and yes even as an oktavist sometimes my voice gets higher) is to be truly relaxed. It is not as much about food or drinking or anything. The yawning technique truly works, but what works better for me is "controlled sigh", which is achieved by doing what you do after some physical activity. You breathe in and then do a sigh, like a sing of relaxation and resting, it is hard to explain in words. Just imagine you walked million stairs and then you just breathe in and do a sigh. Do it as much as you feel comfortable. Also what is a thing is lot of people breathe in the wrong way, even singer. All of these people talk about shallow breathing and belly breathing. Like you pop out your belly and breathe that way. Totally wrong, true breathing involves as much of diapghram as much of a chest expansion in 360. Look at appoggio breating exercises, then when you breathe like that, you generate much more power and resonance. Also study phonation maybe with some speaking coach, tone placement matters also for ordinary speaking. And mostly, be as relaxed. Low timbres and tones are achieved by total relaxation of the whole body, again whole body. Then you may truly work on it. Keep it up and cheers...Ivo

@@ductrungtran6156 Hey there, no problemo. One other cool thing I found out. I book 4 voices of men by Jerome Hines, in the description of the "first voice" there is a hint to imitate a cow mooing. If done properly, I found that it in reality puts your resonance forward but the mooo, which is a consonant followed by a vowel, is deep in the throat. You may also play with changing the vowel to Ah or so, getting a variety of Italian vowels A E I O U. What it does it is brings so much more projection and for me at least, it enriches the resonance as a whole, making the speaking and singing voice rich, loud, projective a deep. That is for the phonation part of my comment. Just be careful not to have the phonation center forward. There is even a video of one classical singer saying that this is a "baby phonation", where babies project their crying and laughing this way. So either moo like a cow or cry like a baby, but not in the twangy way like some folks say. Check out "Baby phonation" video by Michael Trimble or get the book, I found it for free. This is also a life saver and when you warm up like this, your voice will seem deeper because it is more resonant and for me the back throat vowels while having the resonance forward makes my voice super low while super loud ;)
