    Thank you very much for this video. I always hated being "posed" in photos growing up but then again I never really wanted to be in many photos. I am a loner and I prefer photos of places without people. I don't follow celebrity or fashion in anyway, I dont look at those types of ads or magazines with those style of photos. Only recently I learned that I should frame people in photos rather than my usual of framing them out. I actually try going to places on weekdays when most people are at work to look for photos to take. I avoid taking photo's of people so much that now I have come full circle and become curious on how you do it. I learned quite a bit from your video today 😁.

The interaction between you and the subject is much more important than mastery of camera and light. Combining the the two abilities is when you can rise above the norm.

    I non-ironically prefer the "worse" pose - even though it could use some tidying up. Everybody trying to do dynamic poses, so the static poses suddenly pop-out - gotta know your meta. Plus I like how the shadow implies some duality nature there, like some Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde setting - very Godfather-y.
    The dynamic pose throws me off cuz his facial doesn't match. He's too focused on maintaining his pose rather than playing into it.
    Two tips I can shell out for anyone reading this:
    1. If you're having your model do a dynamic pose, iterate with the model how to enter the pose, don't ask them to hold it - the thing about dynamic poses is that they're difficult to maintain since they're, like, "transitionary" states between static poses, they're meant to play off momentum and are not meant to be naturally "held" unless your model has a good core. If you ask an amateur model to hold a dynamic pose, the first few seconds might be ok, but after that it becomes straineous.
    2. If your model is plain, like in this photo, imo static poses work better. Composition is all about how every element in a photo comes together to make a whole, and unless you're intentionally using the jarring contrast to tell a story, it's better to play into your models strengths - unless the photo is meant to portray someone who's tricking i aint buying it. know the tools you are working with.
    In conclusion - latter is wee bit more technical, but not necessarily always better - all depends on context.

    • @mikeacosta912
      @mikeacosta912 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree. Maybe we are not very artistic, but the "bad" pose, the first one with both in pockets looking straight at the camera was the coolest.

    • @DiogoChris
      @DiogoChris 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I see🤔... So what you're saying is that you don't only have to look the part, but also act the part as well. And you know what, I actually agree.
      One thing that might help is you get their imaginations going by making a scenario that'd fit that pose, so that everything, including his facial expressions, partake as well. This might even help them relax in front of the camera because I find, for a lot of people, whenever a camera is whipped out, the awkward button automatically turns on.
      Though, it all depends on what it is you have in mind. It IS art after all, as a result, there's no set rules.

  • @neckroteddy

    This was awesome.
    I love photography, but I usually hate taking photos of people (everyone wants to be the best looking one always, everywhere); and I mostly keep people and faces out of my photos.
    When I have to take photos of people I usually use tape to hide any lights that make you aware that the camera is shooting or recording, and I try to make the subject laugh or move while I record while they don't know. But with these ideas and tricks I think I can do better.

    Great video, also as someone mentioned it's great how you got the model to be relaxed and comfortable with good humor. Slight side note mirroring each other's actions activates mirror neurons in the brain to further enhance this connection/rapport and relaxing effect. Thanks again I'll incorporate these for myself as well!

    ive found the exact opposite to be true. strict poses make for rigid and stiff photos. let your models move, dance and encourage them to have fun and in between those moments you can capture the best and most artistic poses, full of real life.

    • @tudorpredescu3202
      @tudorpredescu3202 3 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      True, i always loved photos where the models were all natural and had poses that reflect their personality. All those "pro" poses just look forced and unpersonal, and they really don't reflect your actual character, it's like you are just trying to look cool in a way that isn't yours, or anybodys. These are just cringe stereotypes if i may say so.

    • @leestrz4153
      @leestrz4153 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Exactly my thoughts. I work with models often and the best ones are never still. They are always allowing the photographer to capture moments. People are naturally expressive in their movements. I do have to pose people for weddings in which case I give them actions to perform or emotions to express. The only posing comes in as placement with the light source.

    • @Driftstar217

      @@leestrz4153 you guys are working with models, who know how things work and comfortable in that environment. This video is for casual or amatuer people who just want photos of themselves like wedding and stuffs,...

    • @leestrz4153
      @leestrz4153 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@Driftstar217 I think it's often silly to pose non models though. Because they feel unatural. I work with non models more than with models because I do a lot of family photography. My directions to them are actions not poses. Models you can pose because they can make the pose look good because they are pros. In a casual setting the directions are better as ideas like look at your mom and smile. Make a funny face. Lean closer to your mom. During this I like to mix in humor or have them do actions that are fun to get natural smiles. I dunno I guess the tips are okay and all but I agree more with Alex.

    • @AndrewMacLaine
      @AndrewMacLaine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      With all due respect, the title of the vid is "How to *Pose* Men". If you want an unposed shot, clearly you wouldn't apply many of these tips. Yes, natural is the goal, but having the subject dance and "Act Natural!" with no direction will give you a roll full of unusable shots and maybe one shot the guy lucked into. Or alternatively, you'll get the "just standing there" pose because most men don't know what else to do in a picture. Simply remembering the "face your body to the light" tip will give your subject one more way to be confident.
