    Just seen this video. Also talking to Chris porter I was asking why the spring rates he quotes for his EXT on his Geometron is so low. That bike has the exact same leverage ratio as a Capra 29, however the Push 11-6 I was supplied for the Capra at my bodyweight is 450lbs, push said ideally 425lb, however the recommended spring rate for the Geometron using the EXT at my weight is 325lb to 350lb... I was super confused about this but supposedly Chris said it's because the EXT has a lot of damping in the middle of its range whereas most other shocks are poppet valve shocks which are normally very firm under low force but then fully open up on larger forces blowing through their travel. I believe most suspension companies are into digressive damping whereas Chris and EXT believe progressive damping is most ideal for a mountain bike where the chassis weight is low unlike a motor vehicle.

    Hey Chewy,
    same here with the spring rate. I got my Storia LOK V2 with a 350 spring mounted and switched directly to the 375. A few rides later I mounted a 400... Weight ready to ride 78kg on my YT Capra CF 2017
    Now it's time for the first service and I ordered a 425 spring as well. It might be the perfect spring rate for me.
    Nice review again 👍. Thinking about the V3 now 😂

    I have been almost spot on coil spring rate for my Transition Sentinel and for my Geometron G1. For the G1 I have one spring I want to use for the steepest stuff, and a firmer one that I am using daily. On the Sentinel I wanted to use the softest alternitve of the 2. I will believe if you are obsessed with sag measure and your bike is sensitive for it too, I will believe you can get slightly off, at the softer end of the scale. But the riding characteristic is what I am after, and I love the initial soft plushness from the softer spring, since the EXT has so good support it can be used with soft spring too. Both my bikes have Storia V3, the G1 has the customized version with negative spring and spherical bearings.

    Its acrually not that expensive (i am running a arma in my dh bike)
    Imagine it like this: you buy one, if not the lightest coil shocks out there. You get a personal tuning, specifically set up for your frame and riding style. And it comes with 2(!) Very light springs (theyre on the weight of a ti spring)
    Now compare that to any other shock out there: base price, two light springs (even ti springs) and a custom tuning, and youll get a 2nd free aftertuning if youre not happy with the first one.
    Its a big thumbs up from me! Cheers

  • @simonholzhammer3478
    @simonholzhammer3478 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Dear Steve, thanks for the review. Some stuff I´d like to point out. The spring preload should not exceed 2 complete turns after touching the spring which equals 2mm of spring preload as a maximum. EXT dampers are very sensitive to preload and therefore it is important. Regarding springs - normally you should be able to choose your spring rates. Therefore getting a springs further apart then 25lbs should be no problem.

    • @SteveGouldChewy
      @SteveGouldChewy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Simon Holzhammer thanks bro! Yep, that is correct.
      You don’t get to choose spring rate when you order however, you specify your weight, Bike etc and you tuned shock comes with the two options. I’m lucky enough to have full support from EXT Asia so I could try about 5 different spring rates. I ended up 25lbs over what they recommend this time around.

    • @simonholzhammer3478
      @simonholzhammer3478 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@SteveGouldChewy then I need to clarify that - I give my clients the possibility to choose spring rates and also to change springs until their satisfied after ordering. The calcualtions for choosing the "correct" springrate are always off and therefore I decided to follow an other path. I want to have satisfied customers as they spent a fair bit of money on an item that should enhance their ride experience.
      Have fun with the shock and continue those vids

    Hey mate great vid. I am riding a 2019 Nomad 4 and wanting to upgrade the super deluxe to one of these for greater mid stroke support and traction. Having a play with the EXT spring rate calculator there is quite a bit of range of springs I could use. Santa Cruz recommends 26-30% sag for coil sprung Nomads. What do you think a good base sag setting should be for getting the initial spring rate? 26% = 425lbs spring for me and 30% = 350lbs spring. Does the HBC have an effect on the spring you should choose? Looking to keep the bike riding higher in the mid section and reduce the squish off the take offs of the big jump lines but also wet weather traction (Wellington NZ rains A LOT!!). Ride all the local gnar - Grade 5 and 6. Cheers bro!

    • @SteveGouldChewy
      @SteveGouldChewy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice one bro. Thx for the kind words. EXT do tend to under spring them in my opinion and that is to get more traction and make use of the HBC. I seem to always be adding about 50lbs to what they provide and much like you, I like it to prop up in the mid stoke so over springing it a touch helps with that better than any other way. I would go with what you have but remember ‘sag’ is just a reference point. Start there and play with spring rates. If you can’t get it to hook up in the steep tech, back the preload off as much as you can. You’ll know when you have it right as it will prop up mid stroke and be a grip monster in the steeps. Play with bar roll and height as well as balance of front & rear spring rates and pre loads.

    Hi Steve love your channel. One question, is the shock suitable for a 220lb rider?

    • @SteveGouldChewy
      @SteveGouldChewy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ezekiel Malachi thanks bro 👊🏻 yep, shock is fine for any weight. Its the spring rate you need to consider. Luckily EXT do all the maths for you so when you order your shock, they will ask your weight ( with riding gear ) what bike you have and what terrain and riding style. I have a buddy heavier than 220 on and EXT and he loves it.

  • @pimansuki
    @pimansuki 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey mate, nice review again.
    I’ve been riding a Zerode for the last 4-5 years. It has a Fox X2 shock and I’m trying to get a sense of how this EXT would “feel” compared to that? You obviously have found the Zerodes well suited to coil shocks , right?
    Also, was the weight of the EXT as expected?
    Cheers, Brendon

    • @SteveGouldChewy
      @SteveGouldChewy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Brendon. I’ve had a few bikes with the Fox X2 and they are pretty good but require a ton of dialling in to get them right as they are what I call a ‘broad spectrum shock meaning they have to have an adjustment range for all types of bikes and rider weights.
      I’ve never really paid too much attention to the weights of a shock as performance is my main priority but as far as I know the EXT is exceptionally light.
      The feel of the EXT is hard to beat as I keep coming back to it ( this is my third or fourth one over three bikes )
      It’s hard to compete with a shock that is custom tuned to your specific bike, weight, terrain and preferences and spending the money certainly unlocks the full potential of your bike.
      Hope it helps bro.
      Ride On 🤘🏻

    • @pimansuki
      @pimansuki 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SteveGouldChewy thanks for the extra info. Yeah, for me it’s about trying to get as much out of the Zerode as possible, or perhaps not limiting it, with the shock choice.
      I agree re the broad spectrum comment. With all the range of clicks the X2 has, I only ever stray 1 or 2 from where it seems to work best for me, so why not have something custom set up like the EXT.

    • @SteveGouldChewy
      @SteveGouldChewy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pimansuki Yeah I reckon you’re a candidate for an EXT. They have all the kinematics from Zerode so it’s pretty easy to order one.

      Steve Gould gonna see how Box One x wide(long) will do. Gonna see if it is gonna survive. If not then next is Sunrace rd to try. For dropper post I think it will be 180mm Vecnum NIVO. Which one do you use? I am going for maximum reliability, durability, performance, with this build. So that's why I want mechanical dropper, to not deal with potential issues of leaks, air or oil, or stuck post or having to use a bleed lever.
