    Many of us carry so much guilt about what has gone wrong in our lives, such as spousal abuse and divorce, but the more information about what we can do right, to the best of our abilities, is information that's personally appreciated. My children are adults now, and damage has been done, but I realize now that we did a lot that was right too to give them their best chance for a happy and purposeful life. Thanks for this. It's important information.

    I loved the video, as always, and shared it with my Pediatric Nurse Practitioner daughter-in-law. I do hope to see more projects on brain plasticity in older adults and Functional Medicine in general, contributed to your crowd-funding initiative to support that, and encourage others to do that too. Keep up the good work.

    Dr. Evans, I am wondering if you can share the citation for the research you describe on stimulation and nutrition. I am a graduate student studying early caregiving, and am currently working on a manuscript on early play and positive outcomes. I'd love to read the paper you describe in this video.

    Interesting video. The problem is where do people get the money for proper nutrition? Also, if they have the money where can they get GMO-free, non pesticide laden, fresh foods. See, many of us in North America have a problem accessing the latter. Children's lunches in the schools are full of fillers, starches, sugars, and modified animal products preserved with nitrates. How are their brains supposed to grow when they are being starved of nutritious food? Now the stimulation thing. Hasn't the need for immediate gratification of children's needs led to a less patient, hyperactive type of child that can't even sit still and enjoy a book for 30 minutes. Children have a problem nowadays with being - bored. They don't seem to like their own company. They want a bigger, faster, louder, higher, something. They want to watch this show on TV while doing something else with the iPad, then play with their new favorite toy all in the space of 5 minutes. The multi-tasking is a direct reflection of being over stimulated, I think. They'll end up being a "Jack-of All-Trade, Master-of-None". Those born into a superior gene pool can overcome the sugar brain and over stimulation, yet still be more intelligent than the general population under the same set of circumstances..

    Practically no one reaches their full potential in life. The 1/3 figure cited at the start of video... Isn't that pretty random? What's the figure based on?

    • @grandchallengesca
      @grandchallengesca 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Tobias,
      This estimate comes from the analysis presented by Grantham-McGregor et al in the Lancet in 2007: In 2004 there were 559 million children under 5 years of age. 219 million were estimated not to be achieving what they might have under more nurturing environments based on stunting prevalence and numbers of kids living in poverty. This makes a full 39% - or approximately 1/3 - of kids under 5 years not reaching their developmental potential.
      Best regards.
