It was started last week and I have not seen him because of pandemic and hospital restrictions. I feel I should have been notified so I could talk to him and asked questions of the doctor(s). My dad and his mom went through dialysis for the last years of their lives and it was always heartbreaking to see how much pain and struggle they went through. i´ve been in hemodyalisis and lost my vascuar acceses, and chamged to PD. I am so happy to have my life again. I eat what i want and drink what i want and feel great, no low pressure again and no weakness post HD. PD is the better choice and better if you have a Cyclator.
Well presented, high-level overview. Pictures are a good way to visualize the information. Obviously my path would depend on a frank discussion with my Nephrologist, along with a timeline. Thank-you Dr Bob! Your explanation seems clear enough.
Thank you. I've just been told that I'll need dialysis in a few months time. I probably won't be suitable for PD (I've had extensive abdominal surgery), but (I'm in Britain) I, hopefully, should be able to do HD at home. If not, I'm fortunate enough to live within walking distance of the hospital. I found this video very reassuring. ☺
Thanks for the overview... Minimal experience with kidney failure but as a new nurse aide, knowledge like this is important for how to provide better care for those enduring the process of kidney failuire... but not taught to new aides in the area I'm from.
My dad did it for 2 years in the hospital then 3 years at home. He was 68 when he started and 73 when he passed in 99...Now we are facing this all again with Mom. She is 83 and says she doesnt want any of it. My heart is breaking, but I have to respect her decision. I just needed to see this tonight. Thank you for this video.
6:42 mark - the reason why candidates who already had peritoneal surgeries cannot get peritoneal dialysis is the biggest risk - a risk of infection called peritonitis, which, in severe cases, can be life-threatening. And when doing peritoneal dialysis at home, you need to practice sterile techniques during it, or you also end up risking being very sick from peritonitis infection.
Thank you for this video. It's very hard to choose. I already did four in a half years of hemo. I got a kidney transplant and I'm slowly but surely loosing it. I don't think I can't go more years of hemo dialysis.
The explanation was so easy to understand because of Doctor Mike's calm and informative tone, plus the great illustrations like I was just reviewing for an exam tomorrow. Thank you so much for this video! I learned a lot, Doc! May God bless you more and your staff. Stay safe!
Over simplified. Doesn't say one has to be 5 years cancer free to go on the transplant list . Doesn't say immune suppressants will vastly limit every aspect of your life post transplant, if you made it through all of the hoops. Doesn't say how to hook up home hemodialysis to your plumbing, and then it's only going to keep you at ??? GFR equivalent.. low, very low.

Thanks for the excellent video. My son has Alport syndrome and started with PD a couple of weeks ago. Next step is transplant and we're still in the pre-transplant stage. Things are moving very slow but that gives us the opportunity to self-study and this video helps immensely with that. Thanks again. Be well and be safe.

I've been on hemodyalysis for 6 years. I guess I'm luckier than most that are since I just do 2 days a week for 3.5 hr. sessions. But I also did a year of PD after losing kidney function from a nasty sepsis hospitalization that nearly killed me. I got off PD because my numbers improved considerably. But after 3 years off my kidneys again were worsening. I chose the clinical approach when I was told I needed dialysis again because PD was no picnic. There's a boat load of boxes with the heavy fluid bags that you need to store in your home ( probably a closet in the bedroom near the machine like I did ) ; there's a tube that sticks out your belly; there's the nightly setup with 2 heavy fluid bags; 20 feet of tubes coming in to your body and 20 more going out to a drain bag that needs to be somewhere with a drain; you can feel the pressure of the fluid filling your cavity, which can cause sleep problems; then the morning chore of gathering all the bags and reams of cording , draining the waste bag and and disposing of all that plastic waste that takes up plenty of trash space ( all that good cord trashed every day really bugged me ), not to mention all those good boxes it all comes in you have to break down for recycling. Nope, not a picnic, and why I chose letting the clinic do the work and waste removal when I sadly had to go back on dialysis.
@ how could they know the cause? ... I think it was a holdover from a bad infection I'd had a couple months before and thought was treated, and was the result of dental work with improperly sterilized tools

(of course i didnt know how out of it i was a the time thought i was totaly ther so was shocked) by the end of the week i had the biopsy found out about 4% kidneyfunction had a tunnel cath installed and had gone though dialysis 5 seperate treatments this was Oct 2009 it took about a month for me to really understand what was going on and in the past almost 6 years i have missed maybe 2 treatments 4 hours 3 days a week.. and still work self employed as i have for the past 37 years the first 31 full time now part time.. and am fairly healthy for a 60 year old.. outside of diabetic as well as dialysis diet..

i applaud you, i always wondered why the need for 3 trips??? there's no way i'm gonna believe someone is gonna die if they miss ONE SESSION. i mean your system can't possibly be as trashed or more than someone who is not on dialysis who pigs out like crazy one day. so dialysis should and could be two sessions a week at most. and if it was i'm certain it'd be a significantly more favorable/pleasant form of treatment
I have to make this choice soon. A friend told me if I go with Peritoneal dialysis than I better have a spare room for storage because all those boxes of solution add up in a hurry. How are they sent to your home - per week, per month? How big are the boxes? How many units per box? And you do four bags per night? This sounds too impractical to do.
Thank you! This was very informative and exactly what I needed to watch to clarify a lot of confusion and incorrect information I've been given. Thank you again. P.S. The illustrations made your video a 1000x easier to not only understand but to actually sit through the whole thing and pay attention. You have a real gift and I'm very thankful and grateful that you took the time to make this video about dialysis. Thank you again.
There are numerous ways of treating patients of hemodialysis, monitoring of water in the blood stream and removal, the removal and prevention of water retention is removed based on laws of Gravity, the patient should be rested upward or in tilt position in order not to be "Drowned" as it excretes the water or removes it through perspiration or by means of urine and analysis. *****IMPORTANT*******
Very informative. My question is with successful kidney transplant, what is the average life expectancy for patients vs those that follows dialysis treatment. I was told in class that kidney transplant patients must take medication to prevent kidney from being rejected, and that medication is what often ends up killing the patient, thus dialysis patient may end up living longer. Is this true in 2020?
depends a lot on how good of a match you get . if it is a live donor or not, and how old / healthy donor my be . Also there may be consequences later in life for the live donor. Transplants unless an exact match may not be forever. If you get a transplant, it is essential that you watch your diet, watch what other medications you may be prescribed, and what you take over the counter. Too much of anything is not good. Having a good pharmacist available to you if you get a transplant is essential. Each doctor specializes in their own area and are all not aware of how one of the drugs they may prescribe may affect the transplanted kidney. However, life after a transplant can be awesome for a time and gives you more time to give you the ability to get your best things in order to take care of your loved ones. But time is essential and each morning is a gift, regardless if you are on in-center hemodialysis, peritoneal or home hemodialysis or have a transplant. My husband did them all.
Thank you for making this video. Although I've been a CHHA for 15 years now, I've never had the full extent of what a patient goes through and how many options are out there. I pick up a person from their treatment center and wanted to know as much as possible so I can be a shoulder to cry on, or just someone for them to vent to, and have a vague idea of what they go through. No one can fully understand what people feel or how unless it happens to them directly. Always be willing to listen to someone in pain - physical or emotional.
I got a bad stone working it's way down right now, this video helped alleviate my mental panic and over analyzing, I'll be fine, taking another Tylenol and playing Xbox, I should make sure my family are compatible donors tho!! Never know which will need what!

Wow, what a great video. Comprehensive, easy to follow, and most surprisingly, optimistic! Someone below has commented "Thanks for making me feel better"..this speaks volume about this awesome video. Thank you for creating such engaging material that I seldom come across in healthcare videos.
Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else wants to learn about can baking soda cure kidney disease
try Franaar Healthy Kidney Formula (just google it ) ? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my work buddy got amazing results with it.
Gotta love Canadians. 💜🇨🇦💜
Great video I am a a nursing student trying to concisely write a paper on renal failure. This is a great video, hitting all the high points. Keep up the good work!
This is a superb video presentation. The clear narration with illustrative graphics is both educational and informative. My gratitude!
This was a perfect summary of dialysis! Thank you! I love these drawing videos that are used to explain complicated topics!
I have been suffering from Herpes for the past 3 years and 8 months, and ever since then i have been taking series of treatment but there was no improvement until i came across testimonies of Dr kasim on how he has been curing different people from different diseases all over the world, then i contacted him as well. After our conversation he sent me the medicine which i took according to his instructions. When i was done taking the herbal medicine i went for a medical checkup and to my greatest surprise i was cured from Herpes. My heart is so filled with joy. I just can't imagine what lot of patience u have to actually draw all those illustrations and texts. Fantastic work!! truly and the explanation was 10 on 10. I keep thinking of making so many videos to help people out there, but I'm just so lazy abt it, which is what is making me think so much abt the effort that has gone behind this video. Thanks for the lovely video
A lot of work and creativity. I also really appreciate this kind of presentation. He's smart and talented!
Excellent Video! Sorry for the intrusion, I would love your thoughts. Have you heard about - Bonackson Wandalyn Genie (search on google)? It is a smashing one off guide for avoiding dialysis and improve kidney health without the hard work. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my best friend Jordan at last got cool results with it.
I thought your presentation was good but you were talking so fast and sometimes mumbling & I couldn't keep up & got lost.
I'm a nursing student and needed clarification for my exam. Thank you this was very helpful!
This is a great video, I’m going to be interning at a Dialysis clinic and wanted some more information. This helped a lot, thank you!
i´ve been in hemodyalisis and lost my vascuar acceses, and chamged to PD. I am so happy to have my life again. I eat what i want and drink what i want and feel great, no low pressure again and no weakness post HD. PD is the better choice and better if you have a Cyclator.
Thank you..my wife just had 3rd session in hospital today as an inpatient..this is very informative and very stress relieving.
Well presented, high-level overview. Pictures are a good way to visualize the information. Obviously my path would depend on a frank discussion with my Nephrologist, along with a timeline. Thank-you Dr Bob! Your explanation seems clear enough.
I'm starting this journey (2022) and appreciate the tone of this very soothing prep video. Thank you.
This was extremely useful & honestly a joy to watch. Love the illustrations & the detailed, comprehensive audio explanations. Thank you!
Thank you, Dr. Mike. This was a well put together and informative video. Helpful and easy to understand.
Love this & the drawings! Very helpful for me as a nursing student :D Thank you.
Hang in there. My ex was just diagnosed with kidney failure today. wish you n your mom the best.
Yeah I know a guy that had that once his gums where all read and bleeding..
I'm a few years away (hopefully) from dialysis and am currently weighing my future options. This was a fantastic video.
Thank you for this video. It's very hard to choose. I already did four in a half years of hemo. I got a kidney transplant and I'm slowly but surely loosing it. I don't think I can't go more years of hemo dialysis.
How are you now?
GFR equivalent.. low, very low.
you are a reliable teacher for us eager to learn, thanks Chris
My 18 month old son has one kidney, and one kidney with reduced function, this video cleared a lot of questions for us. Thank you so much :)
What happened to the second kidney? herbs from Dr emuakhe survived me from kidney deases

Thank you for taking the time to make this video and help others.
Listean to me there is no scientific cure for kidney deases.if you believe in herbs from Dr emuakhe you will not go for a transplant.becouse same bacterias are there for me ew kidney and later the transplant will also have problem.treat yourself naturally with herbs from Dr emuakhe for a complete eradication of bacterias for you to gain yourself.not transplant or dialysis.you don't need dialysis.his herbs will kill and floushed aut the bacterias completely
Excellent depiction of both modalities for assisting patients made decisions which treatment is best for them.
Thanks for your insight!
Did they tell you how you got sepsis
@ how could they know the cause? ... I think it was a holdover from a bad infection I'd had a couple months before and thought was treated, and was the result of dental work with improperly sterilized tools
im a nurse ,can we use this video sir to educate ESDR patients to our hospital?
My son is in renal failure now and this is a very helpful video
Im in hospital now while he is finally sleeping well....I'm terrified...😑
How is he now ?
He passed away on November 29, 2023. He was 33. He was my only child. He got some of the worst treatment every! I will never be the same without my son😢
This video was so helpful. There are alot of things that I didn't know. I didn't know the symptoms of end stage. I will soon be starting the Peritoneal Dialysis and have been very scared of the whole situation. I'm a little more at ease now. Thank you! ❤️
I'm about to start it shortly myself..i only just found out just after Christmas that I had kidney disease and spent 2 months of the new year in hospital..this video explains alot and I look forward to PD..hope yours has worked out for you also

Bottom Hole
I got Hemo, because it's only 3x a week and if your good about it, you can actually go only twice a week
i applaud you, i always wondered why the need for 3 trips??? there's no way i'm gonna believe someone is gonna die if they miss ONE SESSION. i mean your system can't possibly be as trashed or more than someone who is not on dialysis who pigs out like crazy one day. so dialysis should and could be two sessions a week at most. and if it was i'm certain it'd be a significantly more favorable/pleasant form of treatment

Super creative explanation..very easy to understand , Thank you for the informative video
I like this video very much!
Very beautiful and nice illustration.
I do field service support on just the Hemodialysis equipment portion for a living. I really enjoyed this video, than you once again for making it.
Thank you. This answered so many of my questions.
Awesomely informative and perfectly explained! Thank you so much! 😊😊 17/9/2019
