I think what hurts the most is that the device is so expensive and they just shipped it out to all the influencers for free for them to play, rant, say how amazing it is. If they had to buy it to put a video forward, I guarantee there would be more uproar and less sales.
@JustDoIt-xq9pi Yeah, I loved his video on the Micromonsta2, and I absolutely love mine! But with no OP-XY in hand to critique, I'm not even going to watch this one.
Ricky Tinez basically said, 'Nah...' on the price..in a very polite way....they're not ALL gushing over it. They like the hardware, but the price is like...I think some of the influencers are also scratching their chins on it.
@@heavysystemsinc. I am a Patreon patron for one for one of the influencers who received a device and was amazing with it, and the mentioned that TE is entirely aware that people think their OP-1 series is overpriced, but they want to make it a flagship. Someone else mentioned that if they put the guts into a big controller people would think it is worth more :D
@ we’re lucky that it’s at a price point where 90% of us will never touch this device. TE demand goes down but profits remain the same. I also want to giggle at OP field users shocked that they could have had this for the same price and not have to deal with tape recording. Oh well. My point was, why are all the influencers showing off the new device that their audience most likely can’t justify. And it’s just content
@@nofutureinYT “not have to deal with tape” - that’s why I love the OP-1 Field and don’t like my OP-Z and would never buy the OP-XY. What’s great for some people is not great for all. Both methods have their own pros and cons. OP-XY in a way is like a really old version of Reason - a DAW with no audio tracks.
I was about to say, imagine talking synths with your dentist. But then I remembered that whenever my dentist asks me a question, I usually answers with something that sounds like “Mmhm wrrggh blnnnnf… uh-huh, yesh, mmmph!”
I think this is a great message and important to remember. Value and price are not the same, and not the same for everyone. And it shouldn't affect us so much how other people choose to spend their money.
Nailed it in this video. The law of economics will dictate if the OP-XY is really too expensive. If everyone doesn’t buy it, hopefully it’ll come down in price.
@@MidlifeSynthesistProbably because Americans are aware that it is likely to go up in price when the next administration puts an import tariff on it. @@rycrump A solid and well designed product with a lot of potential is what counts. Price is secondary. I had 57 guitars during my music journey so far. They are all the "same". 6 strings, a neck, a body and electronics. Only 5 of them hold up and inspire me. Interesting part is that they are the most expensive ones. But with everything else, you need to feel it to know the value. A youtube video and feature list doesn't help.
I’ve bitten on quite a bunch of TE gear in the past, and this is the first one that instinctively feels like a miss to me. The price is an obvious downside, but for the first time to me the industrial design feels like an afterthought. My GAS is cured.

Very good point! When I've got the OP-Z I started to make more music with it then with any other groove box ish device. And it sounds absolutely great. Once I heard that TE is working on a "OP-Z field" I started putting money away for it. I just have to save a little longer now, but I know it's worth every dollar. Yes, it's a LOT of money. But it's also a fully flashed out, high quality and great sounding tool. I can count dozens of things it offers that no other box does.
@@Softlol I hated OP-1f as much as I love OP-Z. No sequencer and no tweaking over sound always burning it in? It was a torture for me. You creativity and art ends before started. I liked the OP-1f body though, and screen, and pads, and synths.... to be on my OP-Z .... so .... 😎
@@samprock It just seems so strange, some features from the OP-1F is missing from OP-XY and vice versa. I have the OP1-F and am considering selling it and getting OP-XY instead. Because I absolutely loved OP-Z.
@@Softlol I guess they made XY/1f body first but released upgraded 1F to make sure people buy it at hefty new price. You really need to be a fan of tape to like the hassle to constantly scrolling remembering where layered what. No way anyone can truly enjoy the flow. I was buying it for the pocket synth experience, not counting on making project like on OP-Z. Or play it with OP-Z. Thanks got Move came along I returned OP-XY on time. Probably OP-XY is the real deal from the start and they just try to keep 1f line alive to sell more, indeed hipster sound recorder. When ppl complain now on OP-XY as hipster thingy they don’t understand that now it’s truly pocket DAW. I honest;y think it deserves the price tag. Regardless how many small or large grooveboxes out there OP-XY is miles ahead. Though OP-Z owners can “faster” understand the value of it. We can see many years of fun to go to play on it. Keep building skills and making fkn music :) One point people miss when react to it. Back to engines, I think they just have to have separate/new engines on OP-1f and OP-XY at least for the time being. I’d love to see D Synth on XY. Maybe they align or at least keep new engines coming that are on par. Though we know that TE is slooooow. Except slow is not applying to OP-XY, it took them efforts and years to develop it that good. Including collecting money from all of us on interim 3D printed solutions LOL
The implant is $800. The dental surgery to extract the cracked or rotten tooth is $1500. Post surgery follow ups $800. X-rays or CAT scans at different stages $500.
Nice point. I have my own toys and I'm really happy with them. But I also enjoy watching other creators playing around with their devices I'm not even considering buying.
First of all, this is a very refreshing, laid back chat you’re having here. I feel like your authenticity has never shined brighter than here. I appreciate your talks more and more. Secondly, I’d like to point out that TE is just a business trying to sell products for a profit to make a living. I don’t think they give a flying poop about musicians like us, because their products don’t even come close to competing with devices in the same price range. Portability is much less important than capability. These types of devices need to be catered to the music producers and not the hipster collectors. So it’s best to just set aside the expectation that TE is selling an innovative music production device and rather just a flashy product with a high price tag that they know people will pay because of their status as a company. You already pointed out 2 of the much more capable devices that blow the XY out of the water, not to mention the Field that is pretty much the same thing. Definitely not a “need it” kind of release. When it comes down to it, are you looking for a powerful music tool or a flashy toy? Be honest.
I dig this take. I am one of those folks who has watched you for a long time without subscribing. I subscribed for this video. This is a nice change vs the constant flow of negativity people feed on from the internet. Thanks for that.
As always, a nice considered and balanced message that promotes positivity. And that is why we love your channel! I love my Op-1F, especially as the workflow is so unusual it takes me places I otherwise wouldn’t go. but it took me ages to get to the point i could rationalise to part with that much cash for one, (and also to find a good second hand deal). So yes, please get one, tempt us, show us what it can do, but ideally do that slowly, and allow some time to pass before you make the GAS strong. And that allows us enough time for some to surface on the second hand market! Meanwhile if Red Means Recording puts out a video on the XY, then all bets are off, restraint will be hard, and we are all screwed. Love the work, keep it up and hope the shoulder continues to mend!
I can honestly say that the OP1 is one of the best piece of equipment that I have atm! I love it, I hate it and it's still there and delivering... But... I did get it used for 400E 10 years ago... I would not buy one at the current price.
In Dutch we say: “het is wat de gek ervoor geeft”. So yes, it seems like a need little ‘ticking al the boxes’ box. I can’t see myself paying the absurd amount of money. From my perspective there’s something like ‘value-based vs. values-based’. When working in medicine or healthcare you probably know what I mean by that: doing business is not just about one single bottomline. Looking at the world around you, this is not a healthy price tag. Then again, basically what you are saying, too: look at it, be curious, smile, and move on.
I think it's fair to say the people who own it should enjoy it, but I also think the pricing merits criticism. Not for the users, but Teenage Engineering. They have knowingly and repeatedly offered less for more at this point and they as a manufacturer should be getting criticism for this weak value proposition. It makes their current products poor competitors to their past ones. I hope that maybe after another round of this at least one person there will think twice about gouging potential customers like this.
I'm no TE fanboy, but I don't think it's fair to say that they are offering less in terms of features and functions. This thing is jam-packed with functionality.
@edtotman2952 In a vacuum sure, but in context it is not "jam packed" for the price compared to their own hardware. It is an upgraded version of the OP-Z, which is almost 1/4 the price. Just like how the OP-1 Field is not quite as impressive next to the original OP-1 that was less than half the price when it debuted. They are losing the value proposition to themselves just about every time
TE is playing games and luring folks to their product by making you think its exclusive, just like they did with their first OP-1 which Im bought. They’re smart as they make a limited amount of hardware so there’s high demand shortly after the release. Smart Co but way overpriced. Buy yourself a Dope MOOG keyboard for a little less than that and experience true classic sound
Great video, and I agree with you my friend. We (TH-cam) definitely have a way of making people feel guilty for buying certain gear, almost like we share a bank account 🤷🏾♂️😂 At the end of the day, and I'm not even using the term GAS anymore.. I'm happy with my setup in my creative space, but if things change next year, I'll buy it unapologetically. 🙏🏾✊🏾💚
Great video! I agree with you that it’s unproductive to be negative about gear we can’t afford. However, I’m concerned that if we stop discussing overpriced gear and let prices soar, it could trigger a chain reaction. Take Polyend’s new synth, priced at $500, which is more than four times less than the $2,200 Teenage Engineering synth, and it’s amazing! If prices keep climbing unchecked, as a dentist, you might need to increase your fees to afford the latest synths. This would mean I’d have to pay more for dental work. It’s a cycle that affects us all! 😅
Great video. I like your take and in this day and age, people are too quick to shit on anything they don’t agree with. I’m with you here though, some things are just not for us at given times in our lives. Respect!
I totally agree. Everything doesn't have to be for everyone. Several years ago after spending a good while coming up on computer based music, I started acquiring hardware. I've been bless to be able to get a lot of gear. To be honest though, I don't even use most of it. Sometimes we are saved from our own over indulgence.
Very refelctive and introspective view. I really appreciate it. Bonus Kudos for taking the rant-video down (I didn't know it, as I assume I haven't been a follower back then). So many people today are driven towards rants, hate, and spreading negative vibes, it makes me want to step-away from society even more (I'm already an introvert and not that drawn to society at all). I personaly don't know what to think about the OP-XY. Is it an OP-1 Field successor or really a blown up OP-Z? The OP-Z was interesting for me soundwise, but seemed too stripped down and minimized to me (never owned one, tho). So if it is a blown-up OP-Z then I would buy that and the OP-1, and combine them for jams on the road. But I can't afford them now.
I'm planning on getting a Microsoft Surface (one with 16gb ram) for mobile music making. Turns out moving the knobs on a soft-synth with a stylus is SUPER fun!
Thanks for the kind words! I’m in the same boat! Been wanting to pull the trigger on the op-1 f for a while now but this is way more interesting to me🤩 see you soon!
@@TommyLoaded use whatever inspires you and makes you happy. And don't listen to people who think it's shit. (an advice I would like to give my 20 years younger me - but as I can't timetravel I give it to you)
While I’m happy that it exists and think it’s incredibly cool, I think the decision to make it more expensive than the op-1 field is strange. Hear me out: The op-1 field is a boutique synth/sampler/tape machine and there really isn’t much like it in that form factor. That really gives TE the leverage to charge whatever. The OP-XY is unique in some ways, but it’s still an 8 track sequencer. It competes with itself with the op-z and many other devices. Competition makes it a hard sell at $2,300 With all that said, happy for people that buy it and hope they enjoy it.
That’s a great take and I agree! I think what might set the XY apart from something like the M8 (which I love) is the hands on “performability” in such a small form factor. That’s what’s triggering my GAS here lol. Thanks for stopping by!
it is not about hating, it is about expectation. I am a big fan of original op-z, i have 2 of them. And i expected to see smth similar what Electron did witn digitone2 - push the strong sides and heal or fix week sides of the device. And i was ready to pay for this upgrade cuz op-z workflow is super dope and unique. But instead ot that TE just add screen and aluminium case, quadruple the price, and that is it. It has NONE new features in workflow, weak, barely tweakable synth engines, 2 send effects, 1 lfo.. looks funny for 2024.
I wrote on the Cuckoo's video about this device that I think it's only for people for whom "money is not a problem" and for everyone else I would recommend other gear. IMHO there is lots of gear that give more bang for the bucks. Not hating at all, just saying that this is crazy expensive, which it is. But of course the ones that can afford it and also buy it should have a massive amount of fun with it and don't that people hate on them because they spent the money. I'm not jealous at all. Might be a really fun device, sounds nice anyway, but for me it's not something I would spend my hard fought money on. I would have to sell something that I know I like more and have more use of. And it's quite easy to argue that most synth heads have more gear than they *need* anyways. Wish all of you a great day!
I bought it but at the same time I put a lot of gear for sale. Nowadays I really value a quick workflow and having such a snappy device just gives me everything right now. Maybe I’m just in love with the gear, but my passion with the OP-Z was really deep as well, so I’m really felling it with this one right now!!!
Their marketing strategy works. Everyone is talking about their new gadget. Not because it's so good, but because it's way too expensive for what it is. But that doesn't matter. Everyone now heard about it, and a certain percentage will buy. Some even because it's too expensive, and gives them the opportunity to show off. I know, I bought the original OP-1 when it came out.
What you’re saying isn’t wrong but that pov shields literally anything in life from criticism. I think pointing out that TE is more interested in making as much money as possible than creating tools for music to be made by as many people as possible is good valid criticism that should be echoed and heard to create incentive to change. They have that right, but they are becoming more and more of a questionable company. They are also contributing to accelerated inflation of all other tools by proving to other companies that marking up 100x will work if you make TH-camrs tell you it’s good. At the end of the day people shouldn’t rage, but criticism is valid and I feel like “taking the high road” doesn’t work here because people only care because they have been loyal customers in the past that just keep getting priced out. The company doesn’t care about its user base unless they’re rich tech bros
I'd love it if you dove into some of the features you like (or at least think you'd like), and figure out ways to get that feature into the stuff you already use. Whether that's a hardware solution, or a software one. I think most people that like it like its work flow. Are there parts of its workflow you can get elsewhere?
Love your philosophy, thank you for voicing such a peaceful message! I’m going to appreciate what I have for a while and not listen to the GAS monster inside my mind ;)
If I were a person who would be constantly on the road, I would probably get OP-XY as the only piece of gear I have. But right now I don't see a place for it.
Well said. In my opinion, if you compare the price of what industry professionals use for the same functionality, the price is kinda high. Honestly I'm not sure I would use it even if it was free, and that's because the step sequencer looks about as unfun as the mc707's (owned). Just not my favored production workflow, and therefore not for me.
I really like the pocket operators, but I just don't know if I can support Teenage Engineering as a company anymore. It's like there's two people making decisions over there, one of them is a creative designer who makes cool and interesting music gear, and the other one (who thinks they're running a musical Gucci or something) is really annoying and pretentious.
You nailed it. It looks cool, but I don't even know if I would buy it even if they knocked off $1000. I have some gear but now I am trying to focus on the gaps in my setup - what do I really need to progress vs. new and shiny cutting edge. When I watch videos of Teenage Engineering gadgets they look and sound impressive, packed full of options in a small device to the point where they seem over complicated to me. Teenage overEngineering? All the features may make the the price point valid but for me I will take simple and intuitive over needing to spend two weeks to figure it out. What I really need now is just something to create on the fly samples of whatever I am producing. I haven't figured it out yet but I won't spend over $2k to experiment, find it doesn't work then try to justify the purchase of a piece of gear to myself after the fact.
It’s called skimming or gouging depending on your view of the pricing ethic deployed. YMMV depending on how angry you are initially (GAS divided by FOMO = incandescent with rage vs moderately pissed off) and then how long it takes you to simmer down and order one - or not. As ever YMMV. Great video as ever.
we use other products as reference, with shoes it might, might be a little more difficult to compare their quality, OP-XY is technical gadget... so you can compare easier. I agree the price is hard to defend. At this point it could cost 5k and we could 'justify' it
It does cost too much but they can sell it for whatever they want, but they are even worse than Apple when it comes to expecting people to pay a “tax” for their boutique merchandise when it isn’t like it’s handmade or made of precious gems or anything. Moogs are too high too. But they are handmade and a more substantial product.
@ well yeah you could get an MPC one, and the Opsix + Wavestate + Modwave desktop versions and have 3 amazing physical synths plus a sampler that’s basically also a DAW in a box lol but it’s just insane that they’re asking so much
Well said. Thank you for this video 🙏 I cannot afford OP-XY, I wish I could. Anyway I won’t go toxic to others only because I cannot have it too. Maybe one day I will buy it - I have a goal, new toy :) TE went high with XY prices for sure. But it is the quality, the experience, the joy you are buying there. No one is forced to push Buy button
Can we just get all new synths to be released at 10x the expected price from now on, that’s the best GAS killer I’ve seen. I’m relieved it’s not closer to EP-133 K.O II money because it’s just a no at that price and that’s fine, I’ve got plenty other things gathering dust already.
Nice video! I hope you're feeling better. I totally get the excitement and the vibes of wanting an OP-XY. TE does some very interesting and unique work. That said, answering your question: I don't think you should sell one of your beloved machines to get one. Why? Because I believe TE shouldn't be rewarded with massive support from musicians who can barely afford their products and have to make a huge effort to buy them. Purchasing one means endorsing their pricing ideology and value perception. As someone here mentioned: "Pricing merits criticism." Even if it's a wonderful machine, we all know the price is very far from reasonable. So, as you said, dear @MidlifeSynthesist , there's no need for anger-it's pointless. Whoever wants to buy it, go ahead and enjoy it. But I think it's important for some of us who can't, or who find it very difficult to purchase, to say: "Sorry, TE, but you can't count on me."
I kept OP-Z in my backpack for past 6 years. I will know what to do with OP-XY _musically_ (though we usually forget to about that). Plus it's a quality of life improvement. I will listen to it more in a car during traffic to work. In office I'll sneak out to a empty room for accidental jammn' to keep sanity in my programmers brain. I will keep it in front of my computer keyboard during late night meetings at home, tweaking in a loop. After that (maybe, if juices left) I hook it up to my analogue synths and play if any good tune/sequence came up during a day and tweak the "real synth". Finally, I take it to my bed as a dose of melatonin. My life is black and white you see. I will buy any best of the best OOPS-WTF mobile music making instrument to give it at least more shades of grey 😎
Thanks, great message. I score the music equipment against my personal criteria, on things like; Keybed, sound, workflow, and desirability. I maintain this in a spreadsheet and update it periodically. I compare the equipment and use the evaluation for determining what to purchase. It's not a perfect method, I've ended up purchasing equipment I don't use because of some stupid little thing, like the Cobalt 8, scored high yet I never play it because it too hard to change patches, (can't see the screen, and for some stupid reason I hate having to scroll through the sounds and hit enter, that extra step has killed the value to me.). I love my OP-1, but I think I am going to just lust after the OP-XY, too many other synths on my Sweetwater Wish List.
I ordered one. It was a bit of a stretch. But it has a lot of ideas I had for OP1 and OPZ. If it ticks my boxes I can sell my grooveboxes and keep the xy. I was always looking for the best all in one. And this one seems like jt.
100%. Thank you for this. Exactly my thoughts. I find it interesting to see so many people rant on TE pricing, which I can understand, but take it too far and project their frustrations of not having the money to buy these TE products by shaming those who can and do. Like, just take a breath and remember why you are ranting...it's the price. These are typically the same people who then argue that if it was X amount less, like say if it costs $499, then it would be acceptable to them. Ok, rant all you want about that. But don't start judging the people who do have the means to buy it at the current retail. The price is the price.
Also my pro tip: make a secondary bank account and “Tax” yourself by automatically siphoning a small percentage of each check that lands in this “Gear account”. After a while you kind of forget about those extra bucks and when something new comes out I check the amount in the Gear account. If I have enough, that device is mine, but if not I let it ride. Often times in the interim while I’m waiting for money to accrue, multiple devices are released and there is a ton of information about them to make a really informed decision. I end up feeling like I’m buying a device I really want and would use. So, I find I make less GAS related purchases overall. Cheers friends!
Most things that piss me off in terms of gear and people showing what they make with it is often times I see folks with more money than skill and to me this is heartbreaking for looking at expensive gear on YT because I KNOW they're not maximizing the machine to show it off in it's most powerful way. I realize this is MY motivation for using the boxes that I do in the way that I do. I've never heard anything 'good' made on the OP1 Field. Never. And I know the people that can afford the OPXY will likely not make anything 'good' with it either. And to me, that's the part that makes me mad, I can't even viscerally enjoy someone else doing what a box like that begs to have done to it. So...yeah, to me it's not about price. And I say this about the gear I own that's actually affordable. I've not seen but 2 or 3 truly GOOD pushings of the MC101, my current go-to. And it's been out for 4 or 5 years now. But I have one and I give myself that treat. Basically what I'm saying is we need more Bishi's and MrYats in the world (both Electribe X series folks who made a 500 dollar box sound like a 4000 dollar studio)...more Cuckoos, etc. That way those of us who can't afford those things can enjoy seeing the boxes beaten into submission the way some of us would like to do it had we the funds.
Yeah naw. Seriously folks, anyone considering this, get an Oxi One, use it wirelessly with your phone with Koala sampler and a softsynth or two, get a whole heck of a lot more functionality with a much better screen, and don't support this ridiculous price gouging. Yeah, then go and take a trip to Thailand or something with your leftover money. I'm not normally vindictive or anything, but I hope this product fails miserably because I don't want to see anyone else following in TE's steps. Who am I kidding? This thing will sell out immediately.
Oxi One plus ARP 2600 and battery pack can make killer grooves or use Elektron on battery pack. Elektron is better company overall with better products
No, I don't think you should. Sure if the holidays rain cash on you, but otherwise nah. You have bigger fish to fry and you are 100% right to invest time in your current setup just having fun. I hit a similar point recently where I felt less interested in new gear and more interested in swapping out some less satisfying things with other things. I have seriously considered swapping my FA-08 for a Nord or a Yamaha because their key action feel so much better than the Roland one. More refine and explore rather than build I think.
You are a dentist? Where is your Leica? 😊 That 50mm f/1.2 is nice. I sold all my music gear and got back into photography a couple of years ago. Same level of GAS inducing ups and downs when something new is released. But just like photography, the best gear is the one you have. There are camera brands like Leica that cost 3 to 5 times what your b cam costs with less features but provide a different experience. So Teenage Engineering is on its way to becoming the Leica of music production gear. Apparently, enough people bought the field that encouraged them to keep going down that path. I hadn’t seen one of your videos in a bit but I hope your recovery is quick. Cuídate y gracias por el video.
Great video. I had almost the exact same thoughts you did. Looks fun, but not worth my hard saved $$ right now, even though I prob could afford it I’m going to pass at least for now.
Twenty bucks on boxers? Mine are $37 CAD a pair, but they're soooooo comfy. But yeah, I can see why many would see it problematic to spend that much. But they last longer and are comfier than the six for $20 CAD ones. I also "cheat" and talk my parents into buying most of my pairs for birthdays and/or holidays, because they're the ones who got me into trying such things in the first place! Hey, they ask for gift ideas every year, and always buy the practical things on my list, so I figure why not just do that... :P My insoles are $65 CAD, and many cringe at the thought of paying that much for it, but I'm on my feet ten or more hours a day, so it's nice to not have sore feet at the end of the day. Sucks paying that extra amount on top of the $180ish CAD per year on footwear, but not having tired feet at the end of a day (especially at the end of a five day work week) is worth way more to me than the cost of those insoles. With Teenage Engineering, their products look nice, and many seem to rather enjoy their products. Myself, I just can't justify the cost, especially as they've steadily risen in cost over the past half a decade or so. But I'm also not the target market - I'd sooner spend that kind of money on a Subsequent 37, a Rytm II, or Digitone II + Digitakt II, as those devices interest me a great deal more. But at the same time, I'll also watch the videos, hopefully ones that are of a more neutral approach, as they let me see what a device ~could~ offer. I will admit that the newest one does look tempting, BECAUSE IT'S BLACK IN COLOUR (I like my devices to be darker, as significantly less light bounces off of them, so there's fewer issues of aggravating my eyes, yay light sensitivity), but we'll see. I know me from six years ago would've instantly nope'd out of the product, but current me takes one look at the living room and goes "uhhhh, where would I put a giant synth? This thing conveniently fits on my desk" Where's all that waffling going? Ah unno, but I think it's a combination of "I should probably have a morning coffee" alongside "you hit the nail on the head with things - we all have our opinions, and our own biases towards what gear we feel would work for us"
I think the OP-XY will possibly be supported for a decade with more engines and capabilities. The price will probably stay the same. I cannot fault TE do go all out on the quality and features, and it costs money. This price will support further development for years to come. It’s a masterpiece already and possibly will hold its value.
I think of it as of open market. They offer you this thing for N money and you decide you want it or not. It's not like something costs something. You can't be mad at offers that don't interest you. More than that, if you're not daydreaming, you should be aware that things don't cost anything at all. Only experiences and your ability to be in the moment. If you /are/ in the moment, you can make everything beautiful, including sounds. Having just a recorder is more than enough. You can even record with your phone. Music isn't judged by hi or lo-finess.
I think youve 100% completely missed the point here. Youve created a platform that has an impact in a unique space. If you don't provide critique from your point of view then that PoV doesnt get represented. TE absolutely deserves to be lambasted for their pricing and to remove those critiques doesn't make the world a brighter place either.
He provided his point of view. He said that he didn't want to be mad about the pricing. Just because you don't understand economics or capitalism doesn't mean he doesn't. They sell the OP-1 F like hotcakes and people said that was too expensive. It wasn't because the market could bear it. That's likely to happen here too. Just because you want it to be cheaper and you're mad doesn't mean everyone else has to be.
@ripskip160 I guess that's a chance he was willing to take last time, for a bit. Always bummed to see a platform be underutilized, but I can sympathize with not wanting to have that kind of channel. I hope that he can stay consistent and just not comment on pricing in any way moving forward.
@@harveytherobot WTF are you even talking about? I could give two shits about anything TE makes as a concept but since you've got such a masterful grasp of capitalism then surely you can understand how a boutique provider charging exorbitant prices impacts pricing in the entire sector. Kind of like how GPU prices have trended up and up because Nvidia charges ~$2k for their top tier which normalizes idiotic, predatory pricing. Just because a small portion of people can afford something doesn't mean the company shouldn't be addressed.
@ They charge what they charge because people pay it. They aren’t a charity. Like all companies they figured out what the market will bear and that’s how they set their prices.
I'm pretty sure the announcement video of the dudes dancing around in black leather outfits reminded me immediately that the focus is design, and not price vs feature. I'm good on this one. Not to say I don't like the TE products, but this one doesn't hit my "yeah I know it's expensive and I don't have to explain it to you" price point.
We use our phones all day non-stop, and I don’t know anyone that would pay $2300 for one. Definitely a luxury item. Having said that, I’m glad cool luxuries exist and wish we were all prosperous enough to enjoy all the luxuries.

Very well said, thank you for making this video. Even though I can afford to buy it, I simply can't justify the price to myself. I just don't see enough value at this price.
Eight hundred bucks for an implant is inexpensive in the USA 😝; think between $2k and $4k. I have one with a crown that replaced a broken tooth. In my case I would call it amusement with TE. I don't feel negative about it. You are quite right, it is really up to each of us to decide what we want to afford. I can afford an OP-XY, but I just don't want to afford one. Likewise I can afford to buy a BMW or a Mercedes, but I don't want to afford one and drive a Corolla Hybrid instead and my previous car was a 20-year old Camry.

So yes, please get one, tempt us, show us what it can do, but ideally do that slowly, and allow some time to pass before you make the GAS strong. And that allows us enough time for some to surface on the second hand market!

I can honestly say that the OP1 is one of the best piece of equipment that I have atm! I love it, I hate it and it's still there and delivering... But... I did get it used for 400E 10 years ago... I would not buy one at the current price.
Cheers fellow dentist 😊 I feel your argument about the shoe price vs teeth prices... My conversion is always implants>gear
They are losing the value proposition to themselves just about every time
@@EmKUltra64 The big problem for me is that it isn't exciting or revolutionary for that price. It's just meh. $599 is a more appropriate price.

Grateful for you. Cool outlook. Also, I wear a helmet on my Super73 now because of you. Keep healing.
While I’m happy that it exists and think it’s incredibly cool, I think the decision to make it more expensive than the op-1 field is strange.
Hear me out:
The op-1 field is a boutique synth/sampler/tape machine and there really isn’t much like it in that form factor. That really gives TE the leverage to charge whatever.
The OP-XY is unique in some ways, but it’s still an 8 track sequencer. It competes with itself with the op-z and many other devices. Competition makes it a hard sell at $2,300
With all that said, happy for people that buy it and hope they enjoy it.
That’s a great take and I agree! I think what might set the XY apart from something like the M8 (which I love) is the hands on “performability” in such a small form factor. That’s what’s triggering my GAS here lol. Thanks for stopping by!
The original OP-1 was 890 bucks when it came out... And even that was massively overpriced for what it was..
it is not about hating, it is about expectation.
They are playing Marketing 3D Chess ! I totally agree with you! It works😅
Great comment.

TE deserves credit for making the Vongon Replay seem cheap.
Lol, I get the same vibes at times. Like the KO II was crazy good at a nice price point, who knows?
the TX-6, OP-1 and OB-4 are the best products they made in my view.
I haven't figured it out yet but I won't spend over $2k to experiment, find it doesn't work then try to justify the purchase of a piece of gear to myself after the fact.
that is why I quit buying gear 2 years ago. I already have what I need without spending another penny.
I use a 1010 Blackbox for that. it's great.

we use other products as reference, with shoes it might, might be a little more difficult to compare their quality, OP-XY is technical gadget... so you can compare easier.
Mini moog is an all time greatest analogue synth the sound of TE products pales in comparison!

Thanks for the good vibes Carlos!!🙌🏻❤️
🤘🏻🤘🏻
Yes yes and yes! Thank you.
Take the plunge! It looks really cool and I like watching you make videos with cool stuff
Oh My GAAASS😂 thanks for the love🙌🏻
the Rolex of gear
Help me OP-1 Kenobi, you're my only hope.
🤣
That way those of us who can't afford those things can enjoy seeing the boxes beaten into submission the way some of us would like to do it had we the funds.
same with modular eurorack
You can get an amazing home studio for 2300 bucks... People are really insane these days.
just like how people wait in line for $10 coffee drinks and spend $20 for lunch eating out
What home studio can you take in your backpack though. It’s not comparing like with like
It's for hipster nerds who want to flex something to be cool
Oxi One plus ARP 2600 and battery pack can make killer grooves or use Elektron on battery pack. Elektron is better company overall with better products
I approve this message
And I want an OP-XY Christmas
Lol! Gracias por las buenas vibras bro! Abrazo!
Kind words 🙌🏻 your awesome !!!
You are! Thanks for watching my friend!
My insoles are $65 CAD, and many cringe at the thought of paying that much for it, but I'm on my feet ten or more hours a day, so it's nice to not have sore feet at the end of the day.
This thing conveniently fits on my desk"
Where's all that waffling going? Ah unno, but I think it's a combination of "I should probably have a morning coffee" alongside "you hit the nail on the head with things - we all have our opinions, and our own biases towards what gear we feel would work for us"
@@WhiteWulfe lol! Loved this comment🤘🏻 thanks my friend
i think t's cool but not sometihng for 'me' i prefer the playing/capturing aspect (ko-ii for example) rather than programming aspect of making music
Hello, do you have one yet or will you just be chatting about it?
Hi! It’s more of a GAS group therapy session😂❤️
That was great,. thank you.
I think the OP-XY will possibly be supported for a decade with more engines and capabilities. The price will probably stay the same. I cannot fault TE do go all out on the quality and features, and it costs money. This price will support further development for years to come. It’s a masterpiece already and possibly will hold its value.
Well said sir
🫡🤘🏻
AKAI MPC XL FTW :)
Legit!!
TE secretly owned by APPLE
😂
I think of it as of open market. They offer you this thing for N money and you decide you want it or not. It's not like something costs something. You can't be mad at offers that don't interest you. More than that, if you're not daydreaming, you should be aware that things don't cost anything at all. Only experiences and your ability to be in the moment. If you /are/ in the moment, you can make everything beautiful, including sounds. Having just a recorder is more than enough. You can even record with your phone. Music isn't judged by hi or lo-finess.
I wish TE would make a product that is actually impressive and not underwhelming.
It's almost like he doesn't want to lose the chance of them sending him a free unit 😂😂
“TE - XY so expensive that even dentists can’t afford it”
(Their target customers 🤪)
You have just proven that people complaining about the price are right 🤣🤣🤣.(jk)
Best wishes ❤️
Dentists have a pretty thankless and tough job. A good one is hard to find. Assuming you bring the same demeanour to your work, I’m sure your patients love you.
*When you don’t call out Companies for price jacking you become part of the problem!* $2600 for a synth in this category is ridiculous…….
Very well said, thank you for making this video. Even though I can afford to buy it, I simply can't justify the price to myself. I just don't see enough value at this price.
Thank you for watching 🙌🏻 lots of love 🤘🏻
TE OP-XY = Gucci Bag & Pair of Shoes
Love it!
Gee, what else could I buy in that price range that would make the OP seem like a toy... Quite a few things actually...
It's a Birkin bag for groovebox nerds.
😅
yup for rich hipster kids
I don’t know you, but I like it.
i would enjoy your videos on it
i hope to get one after i see how much i like the og op1 which my wife just got for me used for a good price
Its Not the arrows, its the indian
@@gertumlauf5471 Yes!!!!🙌🏻👌🏻
Eight hundred bucks for an implant is inexpensive in the USA 😝; think between $2k and $4k. I have one with a crown that replaced a broken tooth. In my case I would call it amusement with TE. I don't feel negative about it. You are quite right, it is really up to each of us to decide what we want to afford. I can afford an OP-XY, but I just don't want to afford one. Likewise I can afford to buy a BMW or a Mercedes, but I don't want to afford one and drive a Corolla Hybrid instead and my previous car was a 20-year old Camry. We call it the "Beep-beep car" because here in the Bay Area there are a lot of luxury cars.
Best op-xy review without op-xy. Hope you get an opportunity to afford the Op-xy.
Nice video, that being said: Sooo overpriced jeez. Haha
LOL, yeah, that too😅
