    Awesome setup man, the asethetic you've put together is perfect and I love it. This setup looks lived in, like it's been there since the early 2000s so for the authenticity factor I'd give that a 10/10. Also kudos for the solid wood desk, most people don't think about the funiture for a dedicated retro setup, I admire how you actually thought about that.
    The internal hardware is a little too new for my tastes, but I totally get why you went with it, it sorta has the vibe of an old P3 era PC which got an internal upgrade years later. I have an XP system for the exact same purpose, which has a Core 2 Duo E6700, 4GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800, 750 GB Seagate SATA HDD, GeForce 8800 GTX GPU, and a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS4 motherboard, essentially it's an ideal setup for 2006 which is about when I started getting into PCs and was what I drooled over back then.

    If it wasn't known, the case is a Chenbro Junior. I had that for my first PC build in 2001 on an Athlon 1400, and for my first water cooling loop (back when it was pretty crazy to do with a lot of improvisation). The case was definitely a tank, but it had the benefit of needing less tools and 120mm intake and exhaust fans were pretty rare to see. I hacked and modified that case to near pieces before retiring it. Nice to see such a clean example in use still.

  • @starbuck1776
    @starbuck1776 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Very Nice! I did a similar thing, with an Athlon 64x2 and a Geforce 750 ti for games circa 2001-2007. For the earlier stuff (1993-2000) I put together an Athlon 950 with a Voodoo 5 5500.

      David Starbuck, Nice! I'm building an Phenom X4 9750, 8GB of RAM, with a 780ti right now for around that same time period. How does the Athlon 950 handle the older MS-DOS games from the early 90s? I have an AMD Duron 700 mhz I am considering doing the same with for those early 90s to 2000 games.

    • @starbuck1776
      @starbuck1776 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@nathan_sweet Your XP rig must be AWESOME!
      The Athlon 950 works very well for me, but the oldest game I play is Doom (1993). I'm not sure how it would run games like Commander Keen,etc. That Duron should work very well especially if paired with a 3dfx solution or any Geforce card from the 2 series to the 4 series.

    Cool build overall, but lacking on the sound card side. The speakers are great but the Audigy 0570 is not the real Audigy but a cut down version with an inferior controller and software emulation (for EAX). I recommend Creative X-Fi (PCIe versions should be cheaper).

    Sweet setup, I actually didn't actually make a good PC during this era until maybe 2008/9. Was in HS by then but I don't remember what graphics card I had and I only know the CPU was an Intel dual core CPU. Played some Halo, CS 1.6, SWBF2, Fiesta Online and Combat Arms for days. Running xFire for cross game voice chat, DLing torrents over night and while at school. Man, the old days indeed. I think my 2010 Mobile Workstation would also be over kill for XP games but it should run just about anything that can run in XP, maybe anyways, with a Quadro 880m.

    Very nice build. That case sure is "different" never seen one that opens up like that; with the handles. Cable management? ya you are very limited on what you can do; BUT you can make it look a little bit better with some plastic zip ties. At the very least; get them zipped together and pulled away from any fans. It wouldn't take much to rearrange them and tuck them up a bit. Most of that cable (the bulk of it) I think you could ball it up; zip-tie and tuck under that space under the CD-rom. Would look a little better.

    it's not ultimate. The best GPU for XP is Quadro M6000, the best CPU is 2011v3 + DDR4 RAM.

    Hello, I have just been given a stack of old Windows XP games such as TES Oblivion, GTA San Andreas and Rome Total War and am looking to buy a cheap pc off ebay to play them. I have seen a couple of refurbished systems that look like what I might need:
    Dell Optiplex SFF - Core 2 Quad Q6660 - 4GB RAM - 1TB HDD - 2GB GT710 - Windows XP
    or
    Dell Optiplex SFF - Dual Core 3GHZ - 4GB RAM - 1TB HDD - 2GB GT730 - Windows XP
    I am a bit confused though because I asked the seller of the Core 2 Quad pc if he could fit a GT 730 instead and he said yes but the other seller told me that a similar pc he had doesn't have the power for that card, which is why he is selling it with the Dual Core pc instead. If the Core 2 Quad doesn't work with the GT 730 which would be the better pc as listed? Also would either systems be able to play later XP games such as TES Skyrim, GTA IV and Shogun Total War 2? Sorry if I sound a complete noob but I have only ever had games consoles in the past so don't really know much about PCs.

    I loved this video! Anyway what are your thoughts about the following components for an ultimate XP build:
    Intel i7-3770K,
    GTX 780 Ti
    remainder of the configuration would be whatever works best with these two components but also remains compatible with Windows XP.
    Okay I know this would be a super overkill for an XP build, but I was also thinking maybe I could make WinXP/Win7 dual boot machine. Also, I too would like to use my old, Pentium III (don't know exact model of it) era PC case where I could fit all these in. I am aware that these old cases don't really have best air circulation going through them so I'd like to know what temperatures did your CPU/GPU hit while gaming? Thanks!

    People are kind of annoying with the whole newer cable management thing. You would have to have a ton of cables and a complete disaster for it to matter for airflow anyway, so if your case doesn't have a window where you're showing off the insides then who cares if the cables are all perfectly tucked away?

    Honestly, that case interior design is the worst I have ever seen, and that machine cannot be considered DOS compatible without Opl sound. also a lot of Win98 games will fail to boot, and no native glide. The title is correct though, it is just a Windows XP machine, but with an incorrect time period case. And I would add, a powerful single core processor is better for winxp, than a quad core with lower clocks. And that Audigy is not even a real Audigy with the Emu10k1. It is known to slow down games and sound worst because it makes everything on software.
