If this had IBIS and internal ND filters I would of definitely already got one. I'm waiting for the S1H II or something similar. Thanks sharing your perspective on this and enjoy your weekend 😁
Hey Justin! Yeah I think those two additions would make this camera an insanely popular package, however i'm guessing the aim was to keep size and cost down... Maybe we will see something like that in the future though :)
@@JoshCameron Definitely so! Yes I'm assuming it was as well and maybe the wanted to keep their first Box version simple and see how the sales go. Once they have an overview of that and feedback I'm sure they'll create another one with improvements :) I'll subscribe to your channel as we have similarities and I like your informative videos!
@Vaughn D. Taylor it just depends on your personal preference as there's no right or wrong. I would feel the internal ND would make it much more convenient and easier/quicker to apply the effect. Variable NDs are more prone to vignetting and quality issues due to more glass stacked however the higher quality Peter McKinnon and similar are quite good from what I heard.
I'm surprised you didn't mention what a good, smooth image this camera, and Panasonics in general, create. It's really like the difference between watching a film on plasma or lcd, Panasonic being the plasma with its Fuji film balance rather than Sony's Kodak picture.
Why are people complaining about IBIS and internal ND on a micro cinema camera? I get u need the ND in cinema cams but today you can get cheap matte boxes and cheap NDs to work with all ur lenses. All depends if ur willing to spend that extra thousands for something that barely saves you time on set/shoots
I agree. Matte boxes are a great solution, and can save you a lot of money if you were buying a body purely for internal ND's. It's nice to have them of course, but there's definitely solutions out there that people can use :)
@@JoshCameron there are even lens mounts that give you NDs. Plus, a lot of cinema cams used don't have these features. I think the people who complain about those are looking to run and gun only... Just get a DSLR
I’m guessing that would’ve made the size quite a bit bigger, but I do agree that those features would be nice to see. If you use a lens with OIS though it’s actually crazy how stable of a handheld shot you can get :)
Cinema camera doesn't need ibis. Get a Prosumer DSLR if you need that. On sets, you have proper stabilization, or worse comes to worse, make the camera heavier.
@@mitchforteclassic I'm talking about hybrid mirrorless cameras. Those tend to be light and need heft to be stable. Cinema cameras are larger, heavier and are rigged for production needs. all that weight helps keep the camera more stable. In the same case I could say cinema cameras don't need AF lol what is even a cinema camera these days? LOL
Ibis no, unneccesary weight. If ure using this camera get a pro level stabilization… ND filters however would be huge and an insta sell since its one of the main features of the sony fx6
Hey Henri, thanks for the kind words! Yup, I just use the Gamut LUT to convert the footage to a Rec709 colour space, and then I add curves, colour wheels ands then maybe hue sat curves too, just to add a little more saturation in certain areas. It's super simple but I can always make a vid on it? :)
@@JoshCameron Thank you! Sounds simple enough, you get very nice results with it. Have you ever tried Resolves "Color Space Transform" effect? With V-Log/V-Gamut I get very nice results with it, to my eye better than with Gamut LUT.
One thing I find super weird with his camera is that SDI also have lag,,, SDI is still here since the hdmi tech always come with lag etc..as if panasonic just plug an adapter/converter to the hdmi output and made it to an sdi as its also only 1080p in 2021...when we could have used the 12sdi from bmd VA to record raw/lag free stuffs :(
This is my main concern as well...after shooting a feature on the S1H I wanted SDI, remembered this had it, but then have seen a few things around the net that the SDI has the same lag as HDMI. Still maybe only 7 frames, but I'd love confirmation.
This concern is the main reason I shoot with EVA1 cameras - I own 2. Also the CX350 is good- I own one of those. It’s almost a reason to jump ship besides autofocus performance on the S line.
@@PhilHover I miss my Eva1 sometimes...shot a lot of good material on that but moved to the S series...only in collaborative environments did I start to realize lag free SDI was a good idea...
You'll need a monitor at the very least since there's no screen on the body itself, and that's of course to know what your image and framing is doing etc :)
Thanks! I got a used S1 (at around 1000 USD), and having added a cage to that, I don't really see any significant advantages in the BS1H for most use case scenarios. It works well on Gimbals, has full HDMI and I can jam sync timecode via the TRS input. Battery life is fine, and I usually add a 10,000 mAH power bank to it on the cage. Other than multi-cam studio setup uses, is there anything you would strongly recommend this for?

Usually you use a deeper focus for gimbal shots. There’s accessories I believe to help you pull your own focus as well. I’ve used gimbals on a lot of cameras using manual focus but then again I’m just very used to manual focusing anway
Well, a cage costs around £100, and then if you want to record RAW, an Atomos Ninja V is another £400 ish now, plus handles etc (let’s call that £150), so I’d say maybe around £3650 (if you want raw recording ofc!)

I hope the box style came becomes popular in the next few years

Thanks for sharing Josh. A very interesting camera. Cheers!
Thanks for watching !
Excellent video, very interesting. Do you really use just gamut lut for colors? Your colors are always very nice and punchy.

Is the footage from 1:50 a movie you made? If so what is it called?
Does it shoot Cinema DNG?
How is the HDMI or SDI delay on the BS1H in 24 or 25p?

Same lag as the S1H. I hate it so use the EVF wherever possible.
I had one of these and didn’t realise there was lag and it shocked me. Totally unusable in my opinion
Do you see a need for a second monitor or evf when using this camera even if not recording in raw?

How do you use a camera on a gimbal with bad autofocus??? I never understood that.

I use a servo focus motor on my gimbal and then pull and push my focus with that. It’s super simple, and doesn’t take long to get used to :)
You just pull your own focus or have an AC do it for you lol?
I would buy it if it had a menu display on the body like the red KOMODO does.
I think that would be a good feature to see as well :)
I wanted to like this camera, but the lack of IBIS was a deal breaker.
About how much do you think it would cost to rig out a BS1H without the lens included?

If it had internal NDs I would've bought this the day it came out :|
I think a nice workaround would be an adapter that has the drop in ND function. Of course not perfect, but would get the job done!
How is this compare to S5 bud.
Will do a video one this!
