Well that's the thing the BGH1 is a studio camera, its not really designed for run and gun, its meant to be setup in a studio and configured and left there. I'd argue its not really a good location camera for the types of shoots you were trying to do if you're going around to concerts, unless you likely invest in the panny switcher/controller which I believe allows you to access all its settings from the switcher. Kind of like Blackmagic is integrated with its box cameras...
Couldn’t agree more! I was hoping certain features would outweigh the rigging aspect but I was wrong. I can certainly see it flourishing in a more permanent setup.
I actually have a BGH1 and let me tell you is definitely my run and gun camera for pretty much every project, perfect size with a Meike T2.2 22mm and DJI RONIN SC2
Great points and well presented. As a long time Lumix user for concerts I use the S5 mostly for wide/ Medium shots and the A7IV / FX30 for tele work. I find that the S5 also works well in crop mode with the 70-200 F4. Cheers from Switzerland!
Dude thanks for the video! I love my bs1h paired with my s1h. I love the form factor, the long battery life and easy to rig. I use FF for interviews and “commercial shoots” I use a pair of g9ii cameras for hybrid gigs or when I want vertical and horizontal. I’m thinking of picking up a bgh1 to give me a 3rd angle when shooting conferences. I can rig it with a vbr battery and a port keys bm5iii so that gives me camera control. (That’s how I run my bs1h) going to use it on sticks and for interviews during conferences. What do you think? Should I get a bgh1 or a bs1h? I like using mft for conferences so I can pack light and take more lenses vs my FF rigs and lenses. Thanks 🙏🏻
Interesting. You're shooting very different than what I was shooting, mainly music videos and weddings at the time (always 24p). I left the Lumix system a couple years ago for Blackmagic. I was only adapting glass and using speedboosters no AF. I remember the GH5s speedboosted with FF lenses outperformed the Sony A7III in low light! I do miss the IBIS and the open-gate mode for anamorphic. Speaking of anamorphic, the GH5 and GH5s' screens were too small for me when shooting 2x anamorphic ( GH5 disables HDMI out when shooting Open-gate). I was often soft focusing. I never got to use the BGH1, however, I think the SDI port @ 3G is there for focus pulling. Most Wireless video systems are still 1080p but the SDI is much faster whereas the HDMI has inherent lag. Nowadays, I'm shooting with only cinema lenses and I need a large monitor for pulling focus. So AF is not a selling point but any SDI and TC are. Also, the lack of internal raw options. I am still a big fan of Lumix but I would love to see some more professional features added.
Very interesting. I love hearing and seeing others’ workflows. I mean, there’s a reason there are so many different flavours of cameras. What you say makes a lot of sense for the 3G SDI and TC. On the LUMIX “professional features” front I have to say I am skeptical. I’ve reached out to Panasonic in the past for support, questions, and feedback, and I feel a very strong internal divide between “Panasonic” and “LUMIX”, more so than other camera manufacturers. I feel like we do see Sony and Canon sort of blurring those lines between mirrorless and cinema cams with the C70 and FX3 and FX6. The same is true with their lenses. They have a stronger single brand presence in that sense. I felt that most strongly when I first bought my BGH1, and I emailed LUMIX asking if the Ethernet port would ever support NDI. At the time, I think they were saying they would support video over IP, but it would come with a future update. LUMIX told me they were not sure, and to contact Panasonic, which I did. However, Panasonic, upon realizing that my serial # did not match their “professional product line” told me I had reached out to the wrong place, that I needed to talk to their “consumer” support. I find this internal divide problematic because it’s where a lot of other companies are currently flourishing **cough** Blackmagic **cough** I hope I’m wrong!
@@JohnCastillo 100%. My first video camera was a Panasonic DVX-100a back in the day. But yeah I think you're right. They have the Lumix " Prosumer" and then Panasonic EVA1 which is more Pro. Sony and Canon have issues like this too where they remove features that the higher-end cameras have as to not cannibalize their cinema lines. I also just prefer working with BRAW and Resolve now. Although I'm ready for an Ursa Mini G3 now. But hey, Lumix IBIS is still the best. In fact, I remember being excited for the BGH1 until I found out it didn't have IBIS. I would have bought it for gimbal/Handheld/ and crash cam stuff. Although IBIS isn't good for car rigs. Maybe they should have made 2. Like a BGH1 and a BGH1s? I actually have high hopes for future Nikons. They aren't beholden to a higher-end cinema company. If they made a box camera with SDI and TC with Nikon's Nraw I would be highly interested.
now in 2023, how do you feel about camera choices... coming form a GH3... is it still worth it to go over to Gh5S or are there other cameras you think one should consider now, like gh6 or Sigma FP, or Black Magic P4K...etc? thanks for sharing what you think is worth considering in 2023!
Been considering the bgh1 because I have a GH5 already. Autofocus not that important as it will be in studio. Biggest pro for me is low light work for out of studio events. I also already have plenty of micro four thirds glass.
Yeah we're ditching ours too. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but just a pita to use. We got a GH5M2 to cover live streaming and 2 GH6's for production work.

I bought the BGH1 on release, and I remember they were still figuring out the tether at the time (firmware updates). After that, I feel like I sort of figured out a workflow and forgot about the tether workflow altogether. I’m glad you like it though! It certainly has a time and place. Cheers!
If you have a bunch of EF glass I would look into the C300 Mark III, if not then give the C70 a glance...My S1H still hold it's own agains my C500 Mark II and FX7 combo. I know, 2 old cameras but still beautiful quality images. Every time I think about selling my S1H I look at the image quality and put it back in the case and think "maybe next month..."
Hah! Yes I’ve been looking at both of those as well because of our EF glass “collection” (we have 2). We’re still holding onto our S1H for the time being, but looking to sell it so we can have a single lens mount.
Thanks John for your clear discussion on this camera. It would be awesome to get a walkthrough on how you approach including "Drum Cams" into you concert livestreams.
My concern regarding BM g2 is sensor consistency. My primary camera is still BGH1, for narrative and documentary. Using a A7IV on gimbal as camera B because of Autofocus. Colors from BGH1 have more information compared to Sony. BGH1 highlights roll-off are better than Sonny's. Sony is great on low light.
For the BM Broadcast G2 do you mean sensor consistency between cameras or between the different modes (Broadcast vs EF?) I do agree though, that in my experience Blackmagic sensors seem to be more inconsistent than other manufacturers. I think they have a looser quality control which allows them to knock a few hundred bucks here and there. But that’s just speculation!
Between different cameras. One copy might have slightly different sensor than the other making color matching between two cameras at same white balance different.
I'm watching this in 2024 on the eve of the GH7 announcement! I think this camera will have everything you are looking for in one package (minus the APS-C larger sensor).
I'm loving the BGH1 but do understand you, you do have solid arguments. Some I can relate to, that's why my main camera is the GH6 (screen, SSD rec and IS)
I love the way you explain things point by point. And you make sense! I own a Sony camcorder (NX100), a couple of Canon photo cams a Sony a6300...and at work we use the Panasonic S5 (recently). Thanks for the sub!! To be honest, the BS1H is not a camera I would consider (for me). I’m just not really into the box form factor. It’s a little too much rigging and unrigging for my liking, and it still suffers from many of the same problems the BGH1 does (no touch screen, 1080p SDI, no dedicated buttons for basic exposure control). It’s a great deal for a full frame camera, but for the type of work I do I really prefer a camera that is more grab & go.
LUMIX are now releasing an S5 MK2 with phase detect AF and type A HDMI as well as 6K recording. thats only the confirmed releases but most likely they will upgrade other cameras :)
Great presentation. We currently use LUMIX cameras for multicamera & livestream shoots as well-2 GH5, 3 GH5S, 1 GH6 (BMPCC6K for commercial work). We are thinking about the Blackmagic URSA Broadcast G2, which is practically a 3 in 1 camera due to the mounts that can be adapted to it-EF, PL, B4. The FX30 is also under consideration. At the moment, however, the LUMIX cameras are suitable for the majority of our gigs.
If you do a lot of Multicam work I would certainly recommend the URSA Broadcast G2! The lens choices, and the Blackmagic ATEM software control works phenomenally. I don’t personally own one but I work with a client that has a Blackmagic fleet and it is amazing for Multicam work. Personally we decided to move to Sony though! Primarily because of the dynamic range, colour, autofocus, and low light capabilities. But I’ll probably keep my GH5s for quick fixes 😉.
@@JohnCastillo Yes, very soon after pre order. It has 4 channel audio (with the handle, a must ) and you can set channel 2 to be a copy of channel 1 but with a lower gain. You can also live stream from usb-c port. These 2 things have already saved me. The biggest problem with the FX30 is, believe it or not, it's price. It has attracted a lot of people that have never really had to work a little harder to get the best out of a camera. It's not a FF, but GH6 and BM users are really going to enjoy this camera because they have more experience, I think. It's a different Sony camera, very sweet shadows and noise pattern. There are a ton of budget fast primes with autofocus now also. Really enjoying it.
Your arguments are clearly explained in this video. Great to found someone which isn’t someone in news gathering for a television station talking about broadcasting video. I feel that the biggest problem Panasonic has right now is their autofocus and the second is people leaving their eco systems because the have outgrown their system. Anyway I have subscribed to your channel looking forward for more video.
Thank you! And I completely agree. I was holding onto Lumix for a long time because I’ve always loved their cameras, but other camera manufacturers have caught up on a lot of what used to make them great, and it’s tough to ignore it!
Why not use hdmi to fiber cable...that is what we did at my church on the workaround as the hdmi to fiber runs are getting cheaper. Is there a reason why you would not use these cables versus a converter?
Hey Sean! The reason we don’t use HDMI fiber is really only because our ATEM switcher is SDI. When we invested in a switcher we wanted it to be UHD compatible so as to not be limited, and at the time the UHD switchers only really came in SDI. Even to this day, our SDI switcher still has many benefits that you wouldn’t get on most HDMI switchers, such as multiple auxiliary outputs (to route different angles / programs to clients or screens in venues).
@@JohnCastillo In retrospect, the ATEM Mini EXTREME ISO SDI would have been a better purchase for us, but the Mini Extreme ISO with HDMI worked with our GH6/GH5 multi-cam setup, and the runs are short. Otherwise we would have had to buy HDMI to SDI converters, and with budget constraints, we just opted with the HDMI switcher. It works for what we currently have, but in the future I want to upgrade for expansion of our system...
And yeah I got one.... it's the first Panasonic I've ever had so I'm not used to the menu and because it has no screen I've never gotten used to the menu so everytime I use it, it me nuts That being said the image quality is amazing I've since replaced it with a Nikon z 9 which I'm extremely happy with extremely happy with the video content is amazing that comes out of that thing!! Scratching my head what to do with the bgh1 because I do love the video content. Comes out of it
I will say - the quality of the image that camera gave me was absolutely great. At the time, I owned a GH5s and an S1H, and it was far superior to both in my opinion! It served me well in it's time! 🙌🏼
How are you finding the R6? I've been using if for the last year and the overheating __ freaks me out. That "05:00 recording time left" and feeling the body heat up during events is horrifying lol. Hasn't killed itself yet but it's scary 😅
I really enjoyed it! Not for professional video work though. Or at least not for day-long shoots. As a TH-cam camera or b-roll camera it’s great! That being said, I’m also getting rid of it haha. We’re moving over to a full Sony system.
@@JohnCastillo I think I'm probably going to move over to a Sony system as well. But Canon is SO CLOSE to making the right camera! The R6 mark 2 might be "the one" 🤦♂️
I don’t think it’s the same sensor. The images out of the BGH1 were almost much cleaner in my opinion, and better low-light. It’s been a few years though, but that’s my recollection
@@JohnCastillo Well, actually the bgh1 is a box-shaped gh5s, they have the same sensor, and I have compared them and if there is a difference I have not been able to notice them, but speaking of Panasonic I think that one of the best options is the Eva1, I really prefer record with an Eva1 than a sony fx6 or some blackmagics cameras but it all depends on individual tastes, thank you!
But it is not cameras fault, it is your experience. And autofocus is much better in 60fps, so if you use 30fps it is not the same. Not the best, but it mostly limitation and not fault.
Yeah, but once again that is me needing to work for the camera, and not the camera working for me. Depending on the client work, I might need to shoot at 24, 25, 30, or 60, 1080p or 4K, depending on the spec deliverables. I need a camera that can be trusted in all those instances, and not one that I have to finagle with work-arounds, wouldn’t you agree?
@@JohnCastillo At some point I agree, but box cameras are for more stable setup, like streaming everyday in home/studio settings, and not in field camera. Auto focusing is limitation, nobody tell that it is perfect when you buy it, so it's more like "need to know your hardware limits". It's not bad and not good, it's "as is". Might in new S5 II will be better autofocus for continuous videos. But in high end production people are using manual focusing forever... But I agree that it should be more reliable especially for "one man band" production
I use mine to shoot basketball footage also for my local university. Love mine, autofocus actually works pretty darn good for me. I shoot action at 4k 60fps. Setting the aperture correct is the key to getting the autofocus to work great. The 3g sdi is the only downside really.
Glad to hear it! At the end of the day it’s really about getting the right tool for the right job. I’ve also heard other people say that the autofocus works best at 4K60! Cheers
Honestly while I kinda see some of your points and I get it perhaps it’s ideal for your workflow, I generally disagree on a lot of the things you raised for my field of work, documentary television, narrative and commercial clients. The Metabones XL, especially the Cine T version gives this a near FF field of view. I’m curious why however you constantly talked about an unusable AF throughout the video, when in all honestly prior to the GH6 and now S5II this was the best AF Lumix put into a camera. However also you example at the end as a superior choice, the BlackMagic URSA G2 Broadcast, is quite literally a camera that actually doesn’t have AF. Seems like a really weird point to emphasize while taking a step backwards with your upgrade example. I’m curious why you are using a HDMI/SDI converter when you had an SDI module on your Ninja V already which can then act as a cross conversation box. While I will mention it’s my b-cam to originally a very ENG rigged GH5 and now GH6, it’s a very strong b-cam that still in 2023 outperforms many cameras at far higher price points. Your discussion of support equipment I didn’t find a significant argument because even regular mirrorless or higher end cameras still generally require the same for my type of work in my experience. I definitely appreciate your perspective and the effort you put into the video. I just found it very different than my own with the camera.
I guess it’s all about the right tool for the right job. For me, I often find myself either deep in Broadcast environments or in run and gun shoots. The Lumix system served me very well to use between both of these for a long time but (imo) did not necessarily excel in either, at least for my particular needs. It was a good hybrid. I have since upgraded to cameras such as the URSA G2 and Sony FX3 that sort of specialize in those workflows that I used to use a single camera to bounce between. That’s why I mentioned the autofocus. It’s all really from my perspective and needs. As for the HDMI>SDI converter, when I first started using the Ninja it couldn’t be used as a cross-converter. It seems like now it’s possible (just looked it up), but it’s news to me! Hope this sheds a little light. Thanks for watching my video 🙃
I do understand your reasoning for small censors but most full frame if not all major brands in the last 4 years that have full frame offerings will have some kind of internal crop, and piger pixles so cleaner noise. If your getting hired to make the best image possible then full frame all day buy if your a filmmaker then shoot what ever.
Most full frame cameras that I have used will allow for a crop from full frame to S35, which is about 1.5x. Micro four thirds is 2x, so even then most 4K micro four third cameras will provide a sharper image. A full frame camera that could compete with this would have to be 8K (so that when you use 1/2 of the sensor, you’d be getting a micro four third equivalent 4K). So it is still a trade off - bigger pixels and cleaner noise for focal length. That is to get the equivalent crop / distance for shooting concert-style events, as I do. Trust me, when you are in a huge concert hall without first pick of where to set-up your kit, a full frame camera at the back of the hall will still be too far away, even if you put a 600mm or 1,000mm lens on it. And even if you do get away with finding (and affording) a 1,000mm lens, they’ll tend to have a T-stop of 8, so a 500mm micro four third lens of f4-f6 will still yield a very similar result. Ultimately it really comes down to the right tool for the job! That’s why Broadcast cameras, to this day still use 2/3 inch sensors. Thanks for the comment! Love being able to discuss cams in the comment section ☺️☺️

Many talks from the point of view of vlogging and talking Head videos, so they prefere a full frame for the shallow depth and Cinema look. Most doesn’t have a business where they do paid events, so they don’t see the benefit of small sensors. Others You Tubers who do paid events and uses a Full Frame or do manual focusing are doing creative filmmaking where they have control of the subjects, such as actors lightning, have time to switch lenses and rig their system.

) and you can set channel 2 to be a copy of channel 1 but with a lower gain.
Lighting in this video is wicked nice. Oh and what did you film this video on 🧐🤔
Thanks bud! I shot it on the R6
Looking for that s5iix.
Yessir!
@@JohnCastillo I think no time code 😢
Wait for S5 ii and X
Will do!
And yeah I got one.... it's the first Panasonic I've ever had so I'm not used to the menu and because it has no screen I've never gotten used to the menu so everytime I use it, it me nuts
That being said the image quality is amazing I've since replaced it with a Nikon z 9 which I'm extremely happy with extremely happy with the video content is amazing that comes out of that thing!!
The R6 mark 2 might be "the one" 🤦♂️
yes and the gh5s has the same sensor but with screen and better utility, also half price
What camera was this video shot on?
Shot on the Canon R6
Aww man I just got one of these :(
Thats okay! It very much depends on your utility. How do you plan on using it? Static placement or run & gun and build a rig?
@@JohnCastillo it depends, the occasional static client work but primarily to make films 💀
@@JohnCastillo Have not seen many You Tubers who talks about video talks from the point of view of broadcasting an event.
@@JohnCastillo I do appreciate your time explaining this to me I learned a lot.
Bruh, if I had the money I'd take that BGH1 off your hands. I could throw that on my BMPCC OG rig.
😂😂😂
So funny,,,, you complain too much about it ...I have simple question for you .. why did you buy it and cry later about it ..doesn't make any scense to the world
Hey Ramsey! I think I explain pretty clearly in the video why I bought it to begin, and the reasons why I got rid of it in the end. If anything is unclear let me know, I’m more than happy to help you out. Cheers!
