      i adore this camera. the ONLY reason i got rid of it - and I have missed it ever since - was because the autofocus was so bad on their DSLRS which served as my b-cameras. i pretty much hon through every camera - FX3, FX6, Komodo, Canon 500ii, and even Venice… none have given me the simple joy of such a rich and cinematic image as the EVA-1. crappy monitor and all. Besides the Alexa Mini, it is my absolute favorite camera. But now- the new S5II all my previous probs are somber. And right after watching this most excellent review- really the best one for this camera ever made- i just ordered it again. I’m going back with my army of amazing canon EF primes. I just loved the feeling i got shooting the footage. all your footage just reminded me of how much i miss that camera. Thanks and cheers mate! subscribed!!!

    I have been a Panasonic user for almost 15 years from DVX100B to HPX500E and HPX371E and I have just started upgrading to EVA1 (we just acquired three) thanks for the Media Division's detailed review. The joy I get from this model just from testing is unquantifiable, I can't wait to start using it for projects. HPX500 and HPX371 still hold very well till this day though.

    Thanks for the reality check. I'm fond of my EVA1, and think it will be with me for a couple more years. The only drawbacks for me are (1) the horrid "mirror" screen and (2) clients have never heard of it. The screen is an easy fix (get a monitor), but the lack of model recognition with clients is unfortunate. No one has every complained about my footage image quality, but I'm sure I've been passed over for not owning a RED or ARRI camera.
    I also have the S1H, which pairs very well with the EVA1. I bought it to have a smaller, lighter camera for gimbal work, the ability to take still images, serve as a B-camera for 2 camera shoots and the "full frame look". The two cameras are easy to grade as they both have the full V-log color space. I owned a Sony FS5, and never quite liked color grading S-log footage.
    For a camera that is pushing 5 years old, I think the EVA1 is still a viable camera. I will invest in a new set of cine primes before I invest in another camera.

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching!
      Yeah I shot on a rental FS5 for about a year before getting the EVA1 - never loved the image and could never cajole it in the way I can with the EVA1.
      When I purchased the EVA1 the camera sales person tried to convince be to purchase the S1 but i'm glad I stuck with the EVA1 as I prefer the form factor. The image from the S1h is phenomenal too. If I could have afforded one as my b-cam I'd have opted for that, but I do love my little S5.
      People have often commented on the quality of EVA1 footage and asked me what it was shot on - they're always surprised when they hear it's an older Panasonic camera!

    • @johnnycashlesscomedy8616
      @johnnycashlesscomedy8616 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes agreed about investing in glass rather than new body. Ability to do 5.7K Braw is still really impressive despite less features than current cameras. I have a pair of EVA's and am up for a doc shooting A list talent - no one asked which cameras I'm using because they know my directorial eye and can see my appropriate DP skills. I'm planning a crime feature using my 2 EVA's and may not even shoot raw. I just purchased Neat Video, for a problematic shot, so I know I can clean up any issue of EVA noise without loosing sharpness.
      Holding onto the EVA for 2-4 more years means when it's time to upgrade, it should be a significant rather than incremental upgrade, or we'll be able to get todays latest cameras at very good prices.

      It's difficult to say a cam is "better" the EVA1 is obviously much older and lacks some of the features of the FX6. They're diff sensor sizes, Super 35 Vs full frame and the EVA1 can be picked up for a fraction of the price of an FX6.
      The diff in picture quality is not worlds apart, if you have the cash go for the FX6, if you want a bit more for your money go for the EVA1.

Imagine a L mount compact cine camera, would be able to use the Sigma MC adapter and get almost perfect performance of EF glass but FF this time but then also be able to take advantage of the L mount glass as well.

    Have 2xEVA-1s ( a PL & aN EF) use in nature work.
    Used the EVA-1 PL with Canon CN20 and the image is stunning. Cuts really well with Varicam LT and my RED Helium.
    I used with same batteries as you as well as V-mount FX LION Nanos.
    IR is really useful for wildlife as is the dual iso. From firmware 3 this became an amazing tool for loads of work.
    If they made an L mount EVA2 with that Panasonic colour science, a decent screen and a bit more robust I'd be interested, although my Z9 has started partnering the RED and Varicam a lot more now.
    The EVA1s are not getting sold off anytime soon, these are super solid cameras.

    I've owned a pair of EVA1's for 4 years. I'm up for a job to direct/DP interviews with some of the top names in talent. No one has asked what kind of cameras I use. I'm also developing an ambitious feature as well, with known talent, which I plan to use the EVA1's. I keep one body on rails with Matte box, follow focus, and external monitor, etc. and another stripped down for use on a small slider or a collapsable jib arm, where the EVA's weight really helps.
    I recently bought Neat Video to deal with the occasional noise that Resolve can't handle when I purposely under expose, or if I have to use ISO 2500, and it solves any problems the EVA may have (other than not having autofocus, which I don't use anyway having manual prime APO lenses from SLR Magic - another company most people never heard of)
    The option to record Braw 5.7K makes it more competitive to recent cameras in my mind, and at this level, the camera is really one of the smallest bottlenecks to getting good production value.
    Even after I stop using the EVA's - years from now, for actual production I have a feeling I'll be using them for things like casting, table reads, previs test shoots, web videos, etc. The small, light form factor, XLR's with volume knobs, full 4K imagery derived from 5.7K, dual ISO makes them a good utility camera.
    Regarding the monitor - Panasonic took a lot of flak for the less than great monitor, but their rationale was that it was a serious camera at a low price, meaning you're obviously going to add a proper monitor, so why force you to pay for one built in? The on board is a fantastic status monitor when displaying the home screen. It was never meant to be a program monitor, and at that time of the EVA's design, monitors were progressing very quickly, especially in brightness.
    The audio section is good as well. I purchased the best sounding shotgun on the market, the Schoeps CMIT and I was worried it wouldn't sound good plugged directly into the EVA, but the internal mic preamps, if the gain is set correctly, are more than adequate.
    And by the time I upgrade, today's latest under $10K cams are going to seem dated or will be had for cheap.
    The new Alexa 35 is just so good after seeing Arri's demo, that for anything with a real budget I'd want to use nothing else.

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad to hear you're still going strong with your EVA1s!
      I suppose compared to the competition at the time the monitor was below par and the third party monitor market wasn't as developed as it is now, but yeah it wasn't a huge issue to get a replacement!

      Yeah it really is the missing piece of the puzzle now isn't it. I feel like they've got their shit together now with the auto-focus - so if they chucked that into a compact-cine cam they could potentially have a winner on their hands.
      Perhaps that gets announced next year one the FX6 starts to be considered long in the tooth...

      Yeah I used to shoot on FS5s and FS7s too - usually renting them for shoots. I loved the form factor of the FS5 but I never "loved" the image from either camera and when the EVA1 appeared it seemed like it ticked more of my boxes as well as the size / cost advantage.
      The only downside was that not many people had heard of it and the fact you could chuck a Speedbooster on the Sony cams with their E-mount.

And yea I think because I already had an a7sii or a7r (I've had so many bloody sony cameras lol) it just made sense with the E-mount. Interesting to see it next to the Komodo though, makes me wonder whether I've just shit 10k up the wall 🥲🤣

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      haha I mean there's a big difference between the Komodo and EVA1 - but it's not a huge effort to get them to match in post under good conditions - usually you have to pull the Komodo a little towards the EVA1 to get there.
      I think for the money - the EVA1 is still very impressive when held next to a camera like the Komodo - if you know what you are doing you can definitely still squeeze a lot out of the EVA1.
      Having said all that, I definitely prefer the experience of shooting on the Komodo and what I can get straight out of camera and after working for years with the EVA1 was ready for something new.

      This is beautiful, I think the colours look great and organic whilst being vibrant. One thing I find with the stock Panasonic colours is they can be overly warm / red so you could try desaturate the reds a little and maybe push a tad more green in.
      Another thing is your obviously working with natural light, so just looking for contrast and getting diffuse light on the face that isn’t to flat. You could also experiment with the Alexa conversion LUT I mentions in the vid.

    More great work Ed'. Thanks for making this! I had an EVA1 prior to 2020 and sold it was we headed into lockdown; the images are awesome! I really hope that Panasonic don't abandon the mid range cinema camera market. Right now I shoot on a C300mkiii with Tokina Cinema Zooms; looking back I feel that the EVA1 really benefits from a little bit of extra weight as it's so light out of the box, particularly if you're working with un-stabilized glass. I found that throwing it onto a VCT shoulder plate or adding an external battery made a huge difference to the feel of the footage. In a lot of ways I find it a lot less compromised than the FX6 for long-form content (Sony don't make it clear in their manuals that the Long GOP codec is actually 8bit), the 150mbps on the EVA1 is great when you've got a producer that wants to roll on everything. It's great that we live in a world where a college student could buy a camera with the proceeds of a summer job that could take them to Sundance or beyond.

      Yeah the weight of the EVA1 body became problematic when I moved onto the Vespids. Similar to you, rigging it out and adding a shoulder rig / vct plate etc helps solve this.

I got them to shoot a low budget reality show in Ghana and prayed they wouldn't shut down during the 3 month shoot.... they over delivered. Very versatile cameras, I have an S5 as well but find myself leaning towards picking up the EVA even for simple shoots because of the internal ND's and smoother image. I'm currently thinking about picking up the EVA-1 used as a replacement for my trusty GH5. I wonder what lenses besides the Sigma 18-35 you used with the EVA and can give recommendations on. I thought about pairing it with the Sigma 24-70 f2.8. I mainly do documentary as well as commercial work.

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you'll like it, I originally used the GH5 as my b-cam alongside the EVA1.
      That seems like a good line up of lenses, the 18-35 is great for interviews and the 24-70 is a good run around lens. There's also the Sigma art 50-100 but quite a lot of overlap with the 24-70 which I think is more useful, so maybe a 70-200 if you think you need the reach (but I rarely do).
      Otherwise something wide angle could be good as well something in the 11-20 range. But honestly you could cover most bases with 18-35 + 24-70.

      I never opted to convert mine to PL - but I shoot on the Vespids which are easily convertible to EF / PL. Directed a project with the Tokina's last year - very nice glass.
      I previously shot on the GH5 as the b-cam until I picked up the S5 which is just phenomenal.
      I can definitely see a material difference in shooting between the EVA1 and the Komodo, the global shutter is a big one, but the Komodo just provides an even more organic image. I also just prefer using it over the EVA1 as it's simpler to operate and more compact / better weighted. My EVA1 still absolutely shines though and the two cams work really well together.
      If Panasonic had released an L-mount compact cine camera I would have jumped on that...

    Thanks for this. I recently invested in the the Sony ecosystem with the FX6 and A7iv and have been struggling with the decision to sell my EVA. Packed it up, only to unpack it. The camera still produces a stellar image that competes with more modern cameras. I just can't justifying selling it for 2 grand (as they are not going for much more these days). I prefer Panasonic's color science but the Sony has come a long way with s-log3 and with a little bit of post production work, I've been able to match between the 2 systems. Where the Sony has the major advantage is obviously with autofocus and the variable ND. Prior to the switch I never used autofocus and was hesitant to put my faith in it. But it's remarkably accurate and quite useful when conducting interviews or on a gimbal, especially as a solo shooter. But with that said, I don't think I can part with the EVA. Hey man, awesome video! It's really inciteful and interesting to me some of points. I'm someone who actually recently purchases the eva used on ebay a couple months ago. I was introduced to it by someone who does a lot of corporate work that I've been assisting he's had his since the beginning. I definitely see it as a way to look way more professional with my own shoots. So far I've used my Eva for interviews and handheld in run and gun documentary setups. I also have the S5 and that's the two cameras I use. I do plan on getting the S5II because of it's autofocus. Although if they came out with a new EVA type camera with autofocus I probably wouldn't be as eager. The fact that the camera is basically manual focus only feels better to me, I've been using the 18-35 1.8 and a Helios 44-2. The part where you mentioned that the camera should be heavier is interesting to me, because I've been filming soccer tryouts/workout for a local soccer club with the eva handheld with the 18-35 with a small rig handle and a monitor attached to that handle and if I'm moving with the players I'm able to get usable stable footage just using the top handle. I know this comment has been all over the place. What would do if they came out with an update to the eva like same body but maybe newer features 6k and as good af as S5II? Thanks for the video!

      Thanks for the comment and nice to hear about your EVA1 usage!
      Weight wise, the Sigma art is pretty nice to shoot handheld and I guess it's at the wider end, esp if you're below 35mm, I definitely find focal lengths of 35+ benefit from weight.
      Case in point with the Helios it's such a tiny lens on the EVA1 and you get a lot of movement if you're changing aperture / focus, u less you're using a follow focus.
      If Panasonic brings out a new compact-cine cam I'd definitely look at it seriously, although I do have the Komodo now... But at some point I'll sell on my EVA1 and replace it with something else.

      @@EdProsser Thank you for the reply, Ed. One more question: is there a significant difference between the dynamic range of the EVA1 and the S5 / S1 series of cameras? I know the sensor is larger on the S5 / S1, but for some reason I thought that the smaller sensor of the EVA1 has MORE dynamic range due to the implementation of the analogue-to-digital converter. (Oh, and if there is a significant difference in DR between the EVA1 and the Red Komodo, please let us know that, too.) Thanks in advance.

      @@marin_real_estate_photography I don't know what the technical figures are to be honest, it's not really something I go super deep into, I'm sure you can Google them. In terms of my preference, I feel the Komodo has a lot more latitude and a more pleasing highlight roll off, just everything about it is very pleasing and the way it renders motion is just in a league of it's own.
      The EVA1 has a nicer organic feel than the S5 which is over sharp in places and a bit more digital in my opinion. That's not to knock the little S5, what you get for the price and size of that camera is phenomenal and it also has a very nice highlight roll off. I just find the EVA1 renders skin tones a little nicer when side by side...
      In terms of dynamic range it's a tricky one because they all require diff workflows in post so it's hard to compare them like for like... The S5 definitely has the most internal processing etc whereas the other two leave more of that for post.

    So the image quality really is higher quality than an S5 mk2 in prores raw or internal codec?

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends what you're looking for... I think the EVA1 is more organic in look. The S5 MK2 is a modern camera with a few bells and whistles

      @@EdProsser thanks for answer. The eva1 is really tempting now since it can be found in good state for around 1800 euros, with batteries... And I already have EF glass (8-16 sigma, 18-35 sigma, 70-200 canon f4 ... )

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a really convenient package - as it's an all in one solution, lightweight and still has some strong recording codecs. The S5 IIx is still a great choice as well but you'll be paying more to gig it out to get it in the same shape as the EVA1. (batteries, rigging kit, audio solution etc ) just make sure you factor in an external monitor for the EVA1!

      Did some test yesterday of S5 mkii in prores raw and APSC mode (4.1k50 c4k), treating the files with Neatvideo, damn that's good. It requires that extra step of noise reduction but the image is incredible.
      Still tempted to test the eva1 but the 4k50 in 8bit only is hard...

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  ปีที่แล้ว

      How do you mean? The EVA1 can shoot 4k 50fps in 10bit

    Image quality wise I love my EVA 01, however I've found it to be a fairly difficult camera to work with compared to some of the other cinema cams I use at work. I've had lots of issues with menu settings coming unstuck, for example recording xlr audio, then stopping down for a battery change to have the xlr swap off and needing to dig back through menus to turn them back on. (codec swaps happen like this for me quite often as well, not every time but often). I also wish it came in the box with a better viewfinder, replacing this with a good quality monitor makes the camera much better to work with. These days my S5 has become my daily driver and in almost every respect I'd reach for my s5 instead of the EVA 01. Still all quirks aside I still get good life out of my EVA 01 when I need a cine cam body companion for my S5. I'd honestly really like to see an EVA-02 with some of the quirks iorned out, an L mount to line up with panasonics other offerings, and maybe even the new panasonic auto focus system. Make it more of a parallel to the FX-6, if panasonic would get into that space I think they'd absolutely crush it in the indie film/documentary market. And again if you get past the quirks the sensor and the images coming out of this thing are awesome even five years later.

      Yeah I mean no camera is perfect - but I generally got on with the EVA1. There is the quirk of setting your codec after changing frame rates - but once you remember that always happens then I was fine...
      I think a 6K FX6 killer with the new AF - combined with a strategic release could be a massive success. I'd definitely have pounced on that!

      @@EdProsser very nice! I've been enjoying adding the PM to our komodo lately. Always been a fan of the EVA, a bit less popular here in in the states but many FS7 users converted when the camera was first announced.

    The Eva and the C200 are really two of the most similar cameras I've ever looked at getting. I settled on the Canon but it was a tough choice.

    Thanks for a perfect review video! It is rare to find on yt these days I feel :)
    Quick question: I recently got a great deal on an eva1 and brought it home to use alongside my canon r5c.
    Any advice on how best to colormatch the two?
    Transform both to alexa colorspace and go from there?

      Yeah you could do that! I think there's also a plugin called cine match? Which is designed just for that!
